Our experience at Bastien's was a bit of a mixed bag. But don't worry, I'll tell you all about t!
We ended up here because I was reading one of the news site's health inspection report cards and Bastien's was rated as one of the most cleanly, and I had never heard of it so I hopped on Google. Google let me know that Bastien's is home of the famous sugar steak, and we do love a steak, so my interest was piqued. On that same Google search a Groupon came up so I figured hey, what the heck, and bought it and planned our trip.
When we arrived I was very impressed with the interior. Beautifully decorated, Bastien's preserved that old-school cool vibe that makes you imagine people sitting around smoking cigars 70 years ago. We were greeted by a server who seemed less than thrilled to see us, and was annoyed when we needed a minute to consider our drink orders. To be fair, our server seemed very overworked and seemed to have tables in a lot of different areas of the restaurant so was running around a bunch. Once we ordered and got our first round things service wise really improved dramatically though, and we had a really pleasant rest of the evening with our server.
We started with the Brussel Sprouts appetizer, and at $12 for a vegetable I was excited to see what they came up with. The brussel sprouts have excellent flavor, but were very heavily drenched in balsamic and topped with cheese making them very soggy. I think of brussel sprouts as a refreshing, crispy, and usually lemony appetizer and these were heavy and left my tongue sore from all of the salt in the balsamic afterwards. They may fit better to someone else's taste as they were a very hearty dish but for me taking the crisp out of brussel sprouts is a no-go.
We both ordered the 10 oz sugar steak which comes with a potato option as well as soup or salad. I started with soup, as it was a pork chili, and my husband opted for salad. His was a very generic house salad, nothing out of the ordinary. Though the pork was beautifully cooked in the chili, the flavor itself was missing. Zero spice or kick and almost bland. So far I was very unimpressed with Bastien's.
Then came that steak. They really are home of the famous sugar steak, because the rub they use on it is just phenomenal and completely unique. Honestly, it tasted amazing. It was also cooked to absolute perfection. Their twice baked potato was also perfectly cooked and flavored, slightly crispy on the outside and the consistency of almost mashed potatoes on the inside. They really have perfected this dish.
We left the dinner on a good note, full of that super yummy sugar steak. Our bill was $110, some of it taken off because of the Groupon, but with tip (please tip on the full amount when you have a Groupon, people) it still came to $80 with drinks. Though the steak was amazing, this just didn't feel like a $100 dinner to us. I can't see myself coming back, but if I did I would get in, hit that sugar steak, and leave. It felt like the only thing here that we had that was worth the money. If you've never tried it I recommend you do the same. Also, if you are a martini drinker they mix it at the table for you so be sure to order one of those! read more
