Like many recent Yelp reviews on Basil Cafe, I do not understand the overwhelming love for this place. The sushi is average and prices are medium to high. This restaurant is not bad--but neither is it outstanding. It is a run-of-the-mill sushi place. My wife and I ate the following: (i) dumpling soup (no flavor), (ii) pork buns (decent--get if you like mushrooms), (iii) volcano roll (pretty good roll) and (iv) salmon and tuna rolls (the raw fish was room temperature and mushy). I feel like this is a 3-3.5 star restaurant at best. read more

Waited over one hour for an on-line order only to have it cancelled with no reason given. This place has steadily gone down hill as of late. Will never use them again. Food has always been average, at best, but their service always saves them. Now that is clearly gone. read more

This place is wonderful!! I had the mango shrimp. It was so delicious I could have licked the plate. I'm going to have a difficult decision when we go again-to have the same thing or to try something new. My son-in-law had the sea bass and the sauce was addictive-couldn't keep my spoon out of it. I really don't understand why this place has so many good reviews... My family was on their website for the menu and picked out some dishes we thought we would like. They didn't have the price included so we blindly ordered through the phone and freaked out when the total came out to be $113.01 (about $20 for each dish). This part was our fault so we still ordered it and expected the portion would be big. After we picked up our order and brought it home, we were shocked to see how small the portion for each dish was, even the rice portion was so small (and we are not big eaters). But the food looked really good so we were hoping that they would taste good also. However, everything was okay (like 5/10), not impressive at all; but the sumo roll was HORRIBLE. We got thrown off by the first taste (my family and I are not even picky when it comes to food). It was our first time and also the last time that we would order food from this place. I have no clue why this place has such a high rating. I'm thinking there isn't too many sushi places in this area. Overall the price is too high, sushi okay, and they tried to rip us off! We ordered items off of the menu and later on after we were completed they try to pull a fast one on us. They said the menu we originally used was not the right price and recently got revised. I'm pretty such it's illegal to change the price from what's on your menu at any given time. Better sushi places out there. read more

Although we were seated as soon we got there, we waited over 10 minutes for anybody to take our drink order. We looked over the food menu and decided what we wanted to eat way before anybody came to our table to take our order for our drinks. Once someone came over and i don't know if it was because they heard us discussing about going somewhere else and then came over. I really don't want to throw this into the race pile but that's exactly how it felt. 3 young Hispanics in the middle of a mostly white customer base. Everyone else was getting service so why not us? My hubby and I went to dinner here because we were looking for Thai food and this place had great reviews...I ordered pad Thai and my husband ordered the pineapple fried rice. My pad Thai was ok but it way fishy and my husband's fried rice came inside half of a pineapple, which disguised the small portion. Taste wise I've had better in other restaurants. Good quality sushi. Pricey in my opinion, so I do not return that often. If they were great or excellent, it would justify the price. Decor could be better. Perhaps hire a professional interior decorator because it's not a very spacious place, so it's hard to look like a fine dining restaurant. I had an eel bowl, lots of rice, not that much eel for the price paid. Angry Dragon Roll was tasty. The amount of shrimp was substantial, you can see it in the picture. Compare that to the amount of shrimp you get in Snowfox brand at Kroger, Basil wins. However, that roll is all I would get here from now on. I've had chicken fried rice here once, it lacked a substantial amount of the more expensive ingredient, like chicken and veggies. Plenty of rice in it, and noticeable egg bits. I have been here four times and I have never had a bad meal. They are attentive and the food is beautifully presented. It's never overly busy. The lemongrass shrimp soup is great. I honestly believe our experience may have been a fluke. We encountered a very rude server, Summer, who made our experience very uncomfortable. Giving this restaurant 2 stars for the miso soup and karaage. Our waitress was sweet, but didn't speak English well. No big deal! We ordered ozeki nigori and she brought us a different sake. No big deal! We ordered several items. Appetizers: Karaage - decent enough Jalapeno Hamachi - super thick and fishy - awful cuts of yellowtail. No big deal! Miso soup - has enoki mushrooms and is pretty good Main course: Salmon nigiri - made me gag from the fishiness. Cut very thickly. Tuna nigiri - cut very thickly but was fresh and tasty. We also had a few rolls that I really don't even feel like mentioning because the fish just was not tasty. When we sent back two of our rolls due to concerns of freshness and awfulness, our waitress who seemed rather new went and got Summer who went on to make a scene. She yelled at the sushi chef from our table to ask him if the fish was fresh or not. Of course, in their opinion, it was and they argued with me very loudly about it. Super awkward. They handled complaints horribly and were incredibly rude. I worked at Japanese restaurants for years and love sashimi, sushi, Maki, etc and never complain. Being embarrassed in front of the entire restaurant was just ridiculous and unnecessary. I will definitely never return. read more

Elegant little joint! We were welcomed in and sat at the sushi bar, we enjoy watching the magic in action. We had Cab by the glass, we both enjoyed. Full body and served in lovely stemware, not those small little shot glass style. Domino was the name of the wine I believe. We ordered tuna and salmon rolls - Sushi was fabulous and fresh! Pancake with curry dipping was simply amazing (free w/ check in ). The curry sauce was delicious, probably the best curry I have ever had! They have both a Sushi chef and a Thai chef on staff so this place works well for us as my husband loves Sushi and I favorThai food. We appreciated the attention to detail on the decor, the dishware, the cleanliness and even the heavier weight of the chopsticks. Basil Cafe is quality - food, wine, atmoshere and service! The Yellowtail appetizer is awesome and their tools are wonderfully presented and taste even better than they look. I would recommend any roll on the menu, you will not be disappointed. I'm sure it's mostly covered already with their 5-star status but I loved this place. We had the Pancake with the Yelp check in and our little guy (20 months) ate most of it! It was delicious after all. The restaurant was clean and I wish I had gotten our waitress's name - she was great. She noticed that the baby had back washed a little pancake in my wife's water glass and voluntarily replaced it. I had the playboy roll and tofu seafood soup- both were outstanding! I had the chance to taste the Thai pineapple stir fry (very cool/ came in a hallowed out pineapple!) and it was delectable. The rest of our party was equally happy with everything. Cons: extremely overpriced, be careful when ordering, when my daughter asked for sweet tea she was told that they had Japanese Soda, making it sound like that was the only option. Yes the food is good but the customer service is some of the worst I've ever experienced. The guy behind the counter will have you standing there waiting to order for hours if you don't say anything. But when you do say something he will react as if you are less than him. Would not recommend this place to anyone until they come back to earth. read more
