The atmosphere here is calm and inviting, making it a nice spot for a relaxed meal. The interior lighting is fairly dark, but each table has its own dedicated light which keeps the ambiance intact while still letting you see your food clearly. Overall, the food was solid with a few standout items. The spicy tuna roll was excellent -- fresh, flavorful, and easily the highlight of the meal. The ramen was also quite good and comforting. The hibachi steak, however, was a bit of a surprise. The steak was cooked exactly to the temperature I requested, but it (along with the vegetables) arrived slightly cold, which took away from the experience. The fried rice also lacked a bit of seasoning and could have used a little more flavor. While this wasn't a bad dining experience by any means, I'm still on the search for that standout spot in the area that truly checks all the boxes. That said, there are definitely some dishes here worth coming back for. read more

Small, cute, and intimate spot with excellent service. We felt welcomed right away. Ordered a green tea (a little too grassy for my taste), the Crystal shrimp roll, a California roll, and the Japanese chicken ramen. My daughter had the shrimp tempura roll, avocado roll, and same ramen. The Crystal shrimp roll was the star of the meal, definitely the highlight. The California roll was fine but pretty standard. The chicken ramen was on the sweeter side and tasted more like teriyaki chicken and sauce, which isn't the traditional ramen flavor I'm used to (coming from California), so that part just wasn't my favorite. Bill was about $80 after tip, which felt reasonable given the service and portions. Overall, great service and a cozy vibe. I'd come back to try more rolls. read more

I went in to ask about the bento boxes & asked her what the portion size was like I can determine if i needed to order another serving. She was very rude to me & said the she can change the order. I asked her again and told her repeatedly that's not what I'm asking she became very irritated with me. We found this by accident and love it so much we've been back 3x's in the last week! The sushi is fresh and very well done. The Alaska roll is my favorite so far. We've tried the lunch boxes and enjoyed the tofu teriyaki, mango chicken and the Thai Curry salmon and chicken teriyaki. We have been here twice, one dine-in and one take out. The dine-in was great, the food was good and waitstaff were attentive. The restaurant is nice inside too so I'd recommend visiting it. Take out was a little different, of course we are only talking about food and not service or atmosphere. I think the food is better suited for dine-in so we will likely be doing that in the future. read more

When they said this was the best sushi in Rockwall, they lied. It's better than that! Absolutely so cute inside. Currently, BYOB and so accommodating. Glasses and no service fees. They are working on their liquor license so I am sure that will change. Service was quick and prompt. We had a couple small apps and ordered a lot of rolls. They came so very quick! We got 5 specialty rolls and 2 basic. We figured let's get a variety to ensure we like some because we have had such bad luck finding sushi we like since we moved to the area. My husband and I visited for a Friday night date night this past week. It's easy to miss and looks dark from the outside at night but I was pleasantly surprised at its modern decor and romantic ambiance. There were a few people eating but not full. Our server came quickly and suggested appetizers. We ended up with their coconut shrimp, the Rock Wall roll, Author roll and filet minon maki. Everything tasted fresh and we enjoyed it but I will say that my husband would have preferred more coconut on the shrimp and the filet minon was slightly over cooked (got a little tough). The crème brûlée was a nice touch of sweetness after our rolls but wasn't spectacular. I loved the variety on their menu and we will definitely be back to try the ramen and/or Thai dishes. read more

I also ordered the On Your Way Roll, and it was great too, but it felt like it was missing something. Quite honestly all the food here surpassed my expectation. My favorite is the Pineapple fried rice, then comes the Dancing Chicken, lastly comes the on your way roll. The Service was mediocre, nothing special. The review would be lower stars but the food is so good it outweighed the mediocre service. The ambiance is really cool. It's dark and feels upscale to an extent. We live in Forney but this is one of our favorite Asian restaurants around. We order food from here about every other week or so. My favorite entree is the Pad Thai and my favorite app is the Rock Shrimp. My wife enjoys the Playboy Roll. I would say that the sushi is decent. My wife always gets that. I do think that Sushi options are very limited on this side of Lake Ray Hubbard tho. I wish they had some newer or different updated Sushi items. Then they'd be 10/10 in my book! What I like about this restaurant is the food quality. You don't always get this level of quality and taste with other restaurants. They are always friendly when I go in to pickup my food. I just rarely see any patrons inside. I think they may do more takeout business tho. Still a family favorite!! read more

I ordered the sashimi special and she the chicken katsu bento box lunch. Both plates came out quick. So, I was surprised to find them open, and I helped them make corrections to their Google Maps listing. I was not expecting to eat, but Sabrina invited me to sit inside. Very nice interior, almost like before, and very clean. Thai Curry Chicken w/ Vegetables was fantastic, fragrant, mellow, veggies cooked to perfection, big cuts of chicken breast. Coconut, basil, Curry, peppers, all blending around broccoli, red onion, Mushroom, carrot, with Steamed white rice. Habachi Shrimp was cooked perfect to the bite, nice light sauce. I had a small house Salad and Coconut Curry Chicken soup to start with, and everything was served on elegant settings. Rockwall, Texas will be happy to have Basil Cafe open again, with new owners looking to show their culinary skills. *Dancing Chicken will be one of their special dishes. I was just in the mood for a little sushi and sake, and this was definitely the place for that. My only regret is that I wasn't hungrier to have some of the other dishes because looking around the packed restaurant, everything that came out looked delicious. Basil cafe, May look like your typical hole-in-the-wall, but is actually a really nice dining experience. When me and my two colleagues dined here for the first time, we were slightly overwhelmed by the menu options, which is the only flaw, the rest is better from here. The Japanese ramen was amazing, the broth and the noodles, mixed with my choice of steak was a sensation in my taste buds. The sushi rolls are very nice, and made me eat sushi for the first time since 2020. The servers were really friendly and were authentic to their culture. I am giving a 4/5 stars, would give 4 and a half, because my only flaw is the menu's size, being nearly 10 pages long, making it a little hard to navigate to the stuff you want. Cutting down the menu, or even just adding a table of contents would be a great fix! read more

Basil Cafe has been around a while and has had its ups and downs but just got new owners 2 weeks ago. So I took my wife to check out the new cafe. She was suspicious. We ordered seaweed salad. My wife didn't like it. I did. We got miso soup with our meal. It was not the typical by the numbers miso but quite tasty. Well done. We ordered the sushi boat. The sushi was done just right. Creamy melt-in-your-mouth. The nigiri didn't have a giganto wad of rice, but just the right amount, with the fish gently draped over the top. My wife said it was among the best sashimi she's had. I can think of a few better joints but not in Rockwall, so it's got my vote. Not super cheap but also not grossly overpriced. read more

Ahhhh Basil Cafe! One of my favorite places to be in Rockwall back between 2018 and 2019. Then 2020 hit and the restaurant took a hit for the worst! It went two years with being closed seating to the public and really never recovered. Today, there is new owners with same menu. It's clean, very well decorated and a great quaint vibe. Food hasn't changed. It's the same great quality and fast service! I only went for lunch but it was still fantastic and good pricing! Honestly, in Rockwall you don't have very much for sushi (I've tried them all) but this place, is fresh and quality! read more
