Tuesday Afternoon is a great song by the Moody Blues! I was in a hungry mood this Tuesday, and it was after noon... Kuong Thai lunch crowd was gone, I had the place to myself. Never mind the exterior, the interior is calm & demure with 60 seats at small tables. Tables can be setup for big parties. 5 counter height chairs. Very clean, not fussy, some calm instrumental music in the background. Menu is very easy to peruse if you are not set on a dish. The "Ginger Infused Salad" is a joy to graze upon! Lightly sweet, subtle ginger flavor, all the greens are fresh, with a topping of easy to chew light crispy noodle. Add meat to this to make it your meal! Had to dab my finger in the dressing at the end LOL I chose earthy Mussaman Curry for a less citrus spice. This was very, very good. An unassuming restaurant that serves very good Thai food with service that will impress everyone. The portion size of the entrees are generous and can be shared. The appetizer platter was an easy choice if you are in the mood to try a lil bit of everything. The menu has the standard food choices but the amazing curry was something that stood out. If you like peanut based curries, do give this a try. The ambiance of the restaurant with its oriental decor makes it quite charming. Parking is easily available. The restaurant stays busy and it looks like they have a loyal customer base. Not surprising given that the food and service are clear winners. Ok. I really wanted to like this place. I brought my wife here for lunch based off some stellar reviews from fellow Yelpers. I ordered the Tom Kha and my wife ordered the #47. I believe it was the mixed stir fry veggies. The Tom Kha was hot coconut milk with raw vegetables and boiled chicken. It seemed like it would have had more spice or flavor. It wasn't bad, but I won't order it again. In the picture on the menu the soup was red. The one served to me was white with barely a hint of red seasoning. It was very bland. Any way I was even more disappointed in the Tom Kha after I ate some of my wife's stir fry. The stir fry was hands down the best I've ever had. Best tasting chicken and sauce I've ever experienced. The veggies were perfect texture also. We ordered the sampler. It was o. I took a bite of the crab Rangoon and it squirted across the table. We got a good laugh out of it. It was good, a bit too much basil for me, but pretty good. The shrimp blankets were probably the best. The other things were okay. I will mention the spring rolls had a strong flavor me nor my wife cared for. Those were the only thing left on the plate. We ordered Diet Coke. It came in a chilled plastic bottle with a glass and ice. My drink tasted old. I looked at the date and it was March 2023. My wife also got a Diet Coke and hers was October 2024. So not sure what happened there. The service was prompt and polite. The waitress/hostess/server provided some input and recommended the stir fry over the Pad Thai. Now for the bad. It is an old place. The ambiance is dreadful. The hallway walking to the bathrooms was so gross. . After entering the bathroom, I identified the smell. they appeared to be clean, but the smell was overpowering. Some issue with the sewage or septic system I'd guess. I didn't say anything to my wife as I knew she wouldn't approve and it was my idea to eat there. However, she eventually had to go. Let's just say her experience was not any different. She wanted to leave, but I told her I needed to do a review, so we stayed. Summary. Food was decent. Not the rage I read about in earlier reviews for the Tom Kha. But the stir fry was good and everyone else in the place seemed to be enjoying their food. Prices weren't bad either. Management could spend a little money to fix the plumbing, and improve the decor. BUT....I won't eat here again solely based on the bathrooms. read more

This place used to be my all time favorite Thai restaurant during the 2000s and early 2010s. However, it appears that Koung Thai is under new ownership and frankly, you can taste it in the food. I'm not sure what cost cutting measures were taken but you just can't taste the soul of the meals anymore. The spirit of the food died and it's sad to experience that because this was such a beloved establishment and used to be the best Thai restaurant East of Dallas. read more

Went for a late lunch, craving curry and Rumdoul in Rowlett didn't open til 5. Had been here a couple years ago and was pretty good. Got their "fresh" spring rolls. NOT fresh. The 2 rolls had a slice of a piece of shrimp. Noticeably foul tasting and smelling. That's how I figured out the shrimp was quartered. Tasted so weird I smelled it and then removed it from the roll. It was slimy and smelled disgusting. I told the waitress, before I paid, to let the kitchen know the shrimp was bad. The waitress smelled it as well and agreed it was bad. Told me they served it thru lunch and no one complained. Well that's great but you just smelled the foul shrimp and that was the wrong response. She didn't remove it from the check which was incredible to me. The curry I was craving was the worst I've ever eaten. I have eaten here before and the food was fresh and prepared well. Not so today. I don't know what's changed here, but the food quality is gone. The curry was VERY thick, paste like. The dish came with broccoli and I paid extra for veggies. A couple pieces of carrot was all that appeared to be added. Worst meal I've had in quite a while. I won't be returning and can't recommend. read more

I have always loved coming here with my family when I am in Rockwall and when I lived there. The Tom kha soup is the absolute BEST I have ever had! I have tried it at other places and nothing compares. We tried the cheese and curry rangoons as an appetizer and they were also so freaking delicious! The service is always spectacular! This is one of my favorite Thai spots anywhere in Texas! I LOVE Thai and most often order Level 4 or Level 5 (the highest level spice) spiciness everywhere I go - EXCEPT HERE! Level 4 at Koung Thai is spicer than a Level 5 anywhere else. That said, the Level 3 is a little too mild so ask for some extra pepper on the side. For the record- I've not ordered anything at Level 5 here but if you have I'd love to hear about it! Just be warned you may need to stop at Braums afterwards because your butt will likely catch fire! read more

I got fried tofu instead of chicken which wasn't on the menu for takeout but they kindly accommodated, and are very friendly every time. Also tied for my favorite Thai tea! I came to this restaurant 11 January 2024 with my wife. We were going to order some takeout and take it home, thought the process was going to be super easy. The menu is a little confusing if you don't really know what you're ordering. The guy who took our order was just as confused as we were about the menu. They are terribly understaffed, it looked like it was just a kid and his mom working the front. With one Cook in the back. We then proceeded to wait 45 minutes for our food. People who had walked in the door after my wife and I had ordered our meal started to get their food before we did. Finally just got up and asked for a refund. The manager(who I never saw busing or waiting a single table) appeared out of the back and immediately gave us a refund and apologized. Not exactly sure what's going on with this place, I thought they had been in Rockwall for a long time. Wouldn't be surprised if they are no longer in Rockwall here very soon. read more

If you buy a restaurant that's been in the community for years you have to keep the same recipes and quality. The curry, Tom kaa, and pho has no resemblance to the original recipes. The beef in my curry was super weird and red color but fully cooked?? The Tom kaa was coconut milk with water and bad chicken. Not sure what has happened. Just go back to the original recipes with the same quality ingredients. You won't last long of you don't. read more

This establishment closed only to reopen. Went in to give it a try. Talk to the very young thai girl who was cooking about doing authentic thai food and chicken chop chop. She said she could do it. I examined to her that most thai food knowledge US tends to be too sweet, as thai foid is a cuisine that is a balance of sweet, sour, spicy, salty. She cooks a bai khra paow with chicken, supposedly very spicy, like I ordered. The stir fry is horribly sweet and no balance to it at all. I asked the pseudo cook what happened to what she promised?? She said the sauce is pre.made. I told her if that were the case, she should have said that to me in the beginning. Another fraud of a thai restaurant pandering to uneducated palates. We found this place near our meeting so decided to come here for a Thursday night dinner. The place was relatively quiet when we arrived. The service was fast and the waitress was nice. I ordered Thai tea (I don't recommended) - lacked the tea taste and cheap sweet cream inside. Plus it was a small portion for that price. Their appetizer sampler plate was solid. The main dish for me was their fish special. It has bamboo green pepper and some kind of white fish. Lacking the curry and bold flavor. Best Thai restaurant around Rockwall. I'm hyper critical of most southeast Asian cuisine as I can make most things at home. I always judge Thai places by their pad Thai. It's a simple dish so if you can't get that right then everything else is questionable. They have the right balance of sweet, tang, and flavors. Pad See Ew is more of my jam and it's solid. The curries choices are all well done, but as a full disclaimer I'm not a big fan of Thai Curries as I prefer Cambodian curries better. We love their Lao/Cambodian style papaya salad. It's not for everyone as it uses fermented crab and it's pungent, but pairs great with sticky rice. Their mango sticky rice for dessert is a must. read more

No complaints about this great Thai restaurant. We had the fried tofu with peanut sauce appetizer. The tofu was fried very well; still creamy on the inside. And I'll eat anything with peanut sauce! My wife had the Amazing lunch special which she said was really good. I had the Panang Curry which was good but it oddly had potatoes in it which I wasn't expecting. Still a good dish though. The food was very good and plentiful. The service was stellar and the owner came out to talk with patrons. It broke my heart that he and his family have worked so hard to keep their business going but he can't find enough help to keep going. He said all these kids make $15 an hour just flipping burgers think they know it all and refuse to follow his recipes, which make the customers upset because the food doesn't taste the same. He said he has one more year on his lease and he will be closing the doors. It is such a shame because good "mom and pop" restaurants are dying because people refuse to work because they either think they know it all or think they are worth more than they actually are. I will certainly be going back to support this business until he sadly will close the doors. read more
