Yes the food is good but the customer service is some of the worst I've ever experienced. The guy behind the counter will have you standing there waiting to order for hours if you don't say anything. My husband and I came in here recently on a Friday evening about 45 minutes before they close. We knew we were cutting it close and you would never have known it was close to closing time with how wonderful and welcoming they are!!! The food was fresh and came out fast. It was sooo good!!! I can't even remember everything we ordered but we had the filet Mignon appetizer and four rolls and everything was excellent!!! Including the service, even the saki. We drive over an hour each way to have Basil Cafe! Their Angry Dragon Roll is out of this world and everything I've tried has been excellent. Would definitely recommend this place. Do not. I repeat. DO NOT get the chicken pad Thai. I have had a lot of Pad Thai in my life and this is by far the worst I've had thus far. Has barely any flavor to it. And the flavor that it does have it pure fish oil. No spice- when I asked for mine on the spicy side. Tonight we ordered a big order to-go, and unfortunately it took nearly 45 minutes for it to be done. They told me 20 minutes, but when I got there I could tell they had totally forgotten to put my order in. Of course, 20 minutes later and it was ready. Outside of that, I'll say the food itself tasted really good. The portions were huge, but probably normal size (or at least how they should be). That all said, the prices for their entrees are way too high. But, surprisingly the price of their sushi was reasonable. This has to be like the 1,857 restaurant in this location. This is also the best one for sushi so far. By far, matter fact I may order it for take out tonight if no one else has other plans, scratch that delivery. They deliver. It's good, it's real good. From a culinary standpoint this place has AMAZING, inventive dishes. The ambience is just trendy, beautiful and welcoming, and the freshness and cuts of the sushi truly show they see it as an art. I loved being served chopsticks that had a nice weight to them and weren't made out of wood. I had some salmon sashimi and knew this is was a beautifully chosen fish, but wondered if it should've just a little bit on the colder side, and some nicely done fried dumplings. I had the yellowfin tuna rolls and most places the tuna is dry but it was fresh here. I liked that their rolls had seaweed on the outside, as what is traditionally done in Japan. The staff were smiling and so kind. Everyone that worked there just seemed so happy and relaxed in their surroundings. I can wait to try the duck next. I'll probably go here for a date the next time and not on my lunch break. Some of the more refined dishes seem like they'd be so much better with some sake and time with a loved one. And it's a bit pricey, but sometimes it's hard to find fresh sushi. I don't eat rolls that often, I just eat the raw slab of fish (sashimi) so you know when it's good. The price is justified, but they should have their prices online. read more

My husband and I went to Basil Cafe on a Tuesday evening, at about 5:00, to enjoy a new experience. We had the Lovers Boat for 2 and the Tempura Ice cream, iced tea and Saki. We were seated right away, at a very tiny window table. The restaurant only had about four other tables seated, at the time and three servers, that we could see, on staff. The ambiance was nice; with the lighting turned low and real candles burning on the tables inside of some type of stone. A really pretty setup. The restaurant had pop music playing, but we would have preferred to hear some form of Japanese classical music playing instead. Alas, you can't have everything. The waitress came right away to take our drink order and see if we were ready to order our meal (we weren't). She brought back our drinks (Saki, water and iced tea), but forgot the sugar I asked for. She took our meal order, asked if we wanted soup or salad (we both wanted Miso soup) and promised to bring back my sugar. Before she left the table she's already forgotten that we both wanted soup and thought that I wanted salad! LOL! I corrected her and she was off to get our starters. She came back with one soup and one salad! LOL! I sent her back for another soup and asked again for my sugar. Finally I received my soup AND sugar. YAY! Our food was brought out about the time we finished our soup, which was perfect. The Miso soup was delicious, by the way. Almost addictive! The Sushi and Sashimi (Lovers Boat for 2) was beautifully made up, but unlike what is advertised in the pictures. We were told, by the server, that you have to call in a few days ahead of time to have it designed like the pictures because it takes so long to make and some of the Sashimi in the pictures (like the Uni that I tried to order, but was unavailable on a Tuesday, which they usually have Friday & Saturday) is not always available unless they special order it. It also tasted fantastic! The Sashimi wasn't the hugely expensive cuts that you can get in some restaurants, where they are paper thin and delicate, but thick slices of buttery deliciousness, that melt in your mouth. It was very fresh and oh so good! The Sushi were very good, but the chef didn't add anything that he thought they might need so you're left to your own devices there. But with a touch of soy sauce or the tiniest hint of wasabi and it was fabulous. The ginger that we used to clean our pallets was interesting. It was so sweet, when we first placed it on our tongues, I mean really sweet, and then it was amazingly spicy. We liked it! The Dragon roll was awesome! Perfectly seasoned and had little slivers of julienned cucumber inside. -mwah- The Spicy Salmon roll, on the other hand, that left something to be desired. It was very spicy on the back of my throat. Sort of the way cheyenne pepper gets you? But the worst part was the fact that the salmon was puréed. It was like biting into cold, spicy salmon baby food. It was not a pleasant texture. Although the taste wasn't too bad. Unfortunately, I ate one of the Spicy Salmon rolls with my tea glass almost empty and it took about 10 minutes before I could get the server's attention to come fill it up for me. I drank most of my husband's water. After serving us our plate of fish, the server never once came back to check on us in almost 40 minutes!!! Didn't refill glasses, didn't ask if we needed anything, didn't ask if everything was okay, didn't see if I needed more Saki, which we did need a couple of those things. It wouldn't have been such a bad thing had they been slammed, but there were hardly any customers and only one other group came in the whole time we were there and that was close to the end of our meal! So service was pretty awful. Finally we ordered Tempura (green tea) ice cream for dessert. I could've eaten that stuff all day!!! That was probably the best fried ice cream I've ever had! It had the most refreshing taste. We had a few pieces of fish left that I wanted to take home to my daughter (40 minutes away) and didn't want it to start turning so I asked our server to add ice to our to-go boxes. She wrapped some ice up in plastic wrap and stuck it in two small to-go boxes and sent us on our way. Surprisingly, we got out of there spending under $70. Even though we didn't have great service, the atmosphere is nice, most of the food delicious and staff kind and smiling. And you never know... Maybe our server didn't feel well or was just having an off day. read more

This is by far the best sushi in the Rockwall area! I've seen reviews where they talk about the high prices, but I have to tell you three rolls for $12 or two rolls for nine dollars on their lunch special is cheaper than the sushi at Kroger around the corner, and the comparison is not even worth talking about! The service is always top notch, and even their dinner menu with some excellent sushi choices is very reasonably priced for what you get. I highly recommend a trip to the basil café! read more

Honestly, its middle of the road. Rule of thumb, always eat sushi on Thursdays, Fridays, or Saturdays. This is due to the freshness factor unless its a super high-end place to which this is not. We hade the tuna/avocado roll (6pcs), gyoza (6pcs), ginger salad, and pineapple chicken minus spicy cause my 5 year old ate with me. It was all middle of the road gyoza didn't have much flavor on its own, sushi was actually very fishy and worried me to eat and the pineapple chicken had and old chicken odor.
