I came to Basalt yesterday for brunch/lunch. I haven't been back here for at least a couple of years. Anyhow, I was still pleasantly pleased with the service and food. I had the Peruvian chicken sandwich thinking I had the burger the last time. But, eating the sandwich made me realize I ordered it the last time. It was good. I've been here before -- years ago to try their famous charcoal pancakes. I was recently in the area on Easter and decided to have some brunch here. We didn't have a reservation so we got seated at the bar, which is fine. I wanted their charcoal pancakes but I noticed that their Easter special was their Easter pancakes, which is basically the original charcoal pancakes but with all the Easter dressings, i.e. peep marshmallows, marshmallow fluff, chocolate eggs and green coconut shavings made to mimic grass. It was cute. But it took a while to get my order because the guy at the bar put in my order wrong. I ordered the Easter pancakes but they gave me just the regular pancakes. When the lady came over and gave me the wrong dish, she had a bit of an attitude. Girl, yall are the ones who got my order wrong. Don't give me any sass when the mistake was on you guys. SMH. I don't like when the staff has a bad attitude on any given day, but on Easter? Y'all should be extra nice to your customers. If you wanna come here just for pics for the gram, then yea, fine. But if you want decent service then maybe go elsewhere. read more

Last night was our first night in Waikiki and the Mrs. was looking for someplace nice for dinner, but not too fancy. After many reservations being canceled and made, she settled on Basalt. Basalt was well within walking distance of the Royal Hawaiian where we were staying. I would say it was about a 15 minute walk. The restaurant shares space with a burger stand and a convenience store. Needless to say it is a very relaxed, casual atmosphere. No white tablecloths or candles. There is a bar in the center of the space and an open kitchen in the back. Max was our server and he explained the menu to us as well as the accompanying specials for the evening. After a day of Mai Tais, we brought the party to a sophisticated level and ordered a bottle of the house Cabernet which happens to be Robert Hall. An excellent choice in my view. Basalt offers a Prix Fixe menu for $70. That doesn't include alcohol. I opted not to do the Prix Fixe menu and ordered a la carte. For an appetizer I ordered the Pork Belly Buns which were beautifully prepared with charcoal Bao buns, pickled vegetables, and hoisin sriracha sauce. The Pork Belly Buns are a MUST if you're dining at Basalt. They were flavorful and the black Bao buns just tasted like bread with a little sweetness to it. I think I was expecting them to taste like Kingsford charcoal. I ordered the 10 ounce prime rib for my main dish. I wasn't craving prime rib and seldom do, but it just sounded good. It was a perfect medium rare. The garlic mashed potatoes and creamed horseradish were the perfect accompaniment to the dish. The Mrs. opted for the Prix Fixe menu. She chose: 1. Lobster Bisque 2. Mixed Seafood Paella 3. Basque Cheesecake The lobster bisque was really good. The sweetness to it was spot on. I didn't try the paella, but was told it was really good. The portion size was perfect for one person and included generous amounts of seafood. The cheesecake is still sitting in our hotel room fridge. As I said before, the Mrs. and I had been drinking Mai Tais so we didn't feel like finishing our wine. My glass was empty and hers still had a good amount of wine in it. I asked Max if we could take the wine to go and asked if they had a funnel laying around anywhere that I can use to put the genie back in the bottle. He left and returned shortly with a wine funnel. Honestly, I didn't expect that he would find one. So said genie was out back in the bottle and we made our way back to the Royal Hawaiian. Mahalo Max! read more

Glad they Basalt is still rocking during PHE, Been there a couple of times, so people should still check it out. Menu has great items and the fusion foods are good, such as the pork belly (color doesn't really change the taste). Pasta was tasty, upped it with the shrimp. Fries for both steak and the patty melt is great. The steak was really nice as mid-rare. The patty melt was dangerously sinful and so filling. If you want to be a little fancy, check this place out. An innovative classy take on traditional Hawaiian cuisine, Bsalt is located inside Dukes Lane Market & Dining Eatery. This is a dining experience not to be overlooked as it has been recognized several times by Honolulu Magazine for three consecutive years, and on find a tables dinners choice. This is considered a fine dining experience and although the atmosphere seems to be on the casual side, the service and food provides an upscale experience to the typical laid back Hawaiian vibes. Our server was attentive, friendly, and made some great recommendations for our meal. We ordered a variety of appatizers, entrees, and dessert. Every table is greeted by a fresh bowl of their famous charcoal bread which is fluffy, airy, and light. They use the same bread in their char siu bao buns which are tender, fatty, and are complimented with pickled veggies. Hands down the chicken adobo wings are a must as they're tender, sticky, and papa santos favorite! A vinegary mild chili sauce brings out the rich soy umami flavor of the wings that you can't go wrong with. The lobster bisque was smooth, rich, but i do wish it came with more lobster. For our entrees we ordered the seafood paella and miso butter fish. The Paellla was one of the best I've ever had as it had a great seafood to rice ratio, was well seasoned, and all of the seafood was cooked to perfection. The miso butter fish seemed a little bland for my families liking, the cod was cooked to perfection, but the miso flavor was lackin. For dessert we decided on the cheese cake which was paired with what i think to be a lemon raspberry sauce. This cheese cake was AMAZING as it was light, not too sweet, and smoooooooooooth. Overall this dining experience was perfect for my family of 4! From the service to portion size everything was spot on. Searching for a snack in the late afternoon led us to Basalt's Happy Hour, which is available daily from 3-6 pm. The HH menu is available at the bar only. The best deals on the HH menu include the Wagyu burger and Baja Fish Taco for $5. Fries are available for $2. The bartenders are very pleasant and courteous, even reminding customers about last call for HH orders. I wholeheartedly recommend Basalt for the food and service. Yelpers can check-in for 15% off the regular menu. Basalt was featured on a segment of Cheap Eats in Hawaii News Now. Validated parking for up to 2 hours is available at the Hyatt Centric parking garage (enter on Seaside Avenue on the right before you reach Kuhio Avenue). Our waitress Cortney (hope this is her name-it's on the check) and the guy that closed and cleaned up the patio on night of Nov 10th 2020 deserves more than 5 stars!! I'm a little embarrassed to write this review lol but here I go... We went here for my daughter's 21st birthday. They close at 9pm and I think we got there at 8:15ish and they still took us. We sat on the patio and enjoyed our drinks and appetizers. Service was wonderful. All the appetizers were really delicious, flavors that I have not had before. The steak was cooked to perfection, as we ordered -medium rare. My daughter and I shared a plate after appetizers. So my daughter had a mai tai (love their mai tai!) and then ordered a Lilikoi punch . They accidentally made 2 so they gave both to her and only charged for 1. It's a weak drink but there is a lot of liquid. We finished eating and our drinks and head to the bathroom. We came back out and once my daughter sat down and as I was signing the check, she threw up alllll over the patio. I think she was just really full. I am so glad we were the only patrons left at this point. I felt so bad and apologized profusely and thank goodness I didn't write the tip on the check yet. Had to add a little extra! Our waitress was so understanding and said it's her birthday so it's understandable and the the guy cleaning up also said don't worry it happens. (So sorry about this!!!) Unfortunately this review is long overdue, and it looks like the dinner menu has changed quite a bit and the pricing has surprisingly gone down for the prix fix from the time I visited this year in January. Now I can't remember whether or not I had the New York steak or the ribeye between my family and I BUT I do remember tasting both and they did not disappoint! All the flavors were well balanced, one was more sweet and the other more savory and both hit the spot so you can't go wrong with either. The service was friendly and punctual, like others have mentioned the location isn't high end or hella private/fancy if you were thinking of a romantic date night but I'd rather have good food over the ambience. I haven't been to Waikiki for an overnighter in over 10 years and was excited to see how much it changed. So many places to eat and hang out in. We were looking for a breakfast/brunch place that was walking distance from our hotel and we stumbled across Basalt. It's in the middle of a sort of food court with a very fancy ABC convenience store. My friends had been so they knew what to order. Charcoal pancakes and a meat lovers omelet. I personally have never had an eggs Benedict in my life... I know hard to believe right??? But it's true. My friend said that Basalt has one of the best so I ordered it. Holy cow it was the best thing I have had for breakfast in a long time!!! I have been missing out on this amazing meal my whole life!!! I don't know if it was just amazing here but I am excited to try it at other places and to even make it at home!! The charcoal pancakes were fluffy and not too sweet with the syrup. Had the chance to try Basalt during lunchtime. I tried the pork buns, adobo wings, fries, and steak tacos. I wish the wings would have been crispier and the pork bun had more flavor. I would say this place is very middle of road and offers some unique items. Service was solid but nothing overtly special. I would say good place for a quick lunch! 2/9/25 (PM) - This Little hidden gem is so worth the try! Great food, great atmosphere and the medium ribeye steak *chef's kiss*. I ate at the bar (for reference) and was greeted and served by lead bar tender, Kahlani, and bartender, Katie -- their drink suggestions were on point, service was top notch and food was amazing. I came here for their happy hour (3pm-5pm daily) which includes $6 cocktails, $4 beers, $5 wines, and $5-8 appetizers. Out of all the restaurant happy hours I went to in Waikiki (and I went to a lot), this was my favorite. I liked it so much that I actually came here twice during my trip. Everything was so nicely priced and low and the quality was superb! My first drink was the Moscow mule ($6) which was your typical Moscow mule. I also ordered the HH burger ($5) and the toga fries ($3). The burger was cheap, filling, and definitely worth the price that you pay and the toga fries were so good! They're made with some Japanese seasonings (per the bartender) and adds a little more flavor and spice to them that I didn't expect. I think they're worth the extra $1 compared to the regular fries. I also ordered the Basalt mai tai ($6) which was good and sweet. Make sure you mix the drink to incorporate the float on top after you get it because when I didn't mix it it tasted like cough medicine. It was good after though! I am a savory breakfast kind of gal and the breakfast plate was the perfect hangover treat. I love that the breakfast plate was a big portion. Eggs were buttery. 5 thicc pieces of portugese sausage. Crispy potatoes. Rating 4 stars because I feel like it is on the higher priced side, but what else do you expect from Waikiki. My friends got the eggs Benedict and said it was good! I'd recommend making reservations, as they can get rather busy quickly. Reservations can be made online on Open Table. I was able to make a 9:30a reservation on a Saturday with ease within the hour. My crew and I went to specifically partake in their breakfast menu. *Avocado Garden Toast ($15): a slice of grilled wheat bread covered with an avocado spread, cherry tomato, micro greens, watermelon relish, pumpkin seeds and of courses I added a poached egg for an extra $3. My favorite. Flavorful and beautifully plated. The egg was poached to perfection. The only thing I'd note is that this dish is on the lighter side. You may want to order another dish in addition to this, if you're hungry (or share the pancakes, which is what my boo and I did.) *Charcoal Buttermilk Pancakes ($18): their signature charcoal pancakes covered with guava-strawberry sauce, mixed berries and whipped cream. Very popular dish. Absolutely delicious and the sauce was on point; not too sweet, not too tart - just right. This takes pancakes to another level. I see why this is one of their famous dishes. I like Basalt for a nice dinner as the atmosphere is nice, the service is always great and it's easily accessible without being crazy busy like some other places. The Chef Keith Kong used to work at Duke's and had ventured out to Basalt and I love that they have a larger variety of options compared to some other places. Be aware that this is a bit more of an expensive meal but I haven't had anything that isn't good here. My photos are from two different meals (brunch and dinner) and that's why the food is a wide variety. I'll start with brunch: The Charcoal pancake is good, nothing hugely special but it sure looks good and is different from the norm. The presentation is nice as well! The loco moco is good. I like that they do it with the bacon fried rice so it's something different from the normal loco moco that you find on the island. The fried rice is good too and works with the gravy, waygu beef and gravy. The pork belly fried rice is good as well. I mean, it's hard to mess up pork belly so in combination with the bacon fried rice is good! Dinner: Mixed seafood paella was good! The flavors are good and it's nice to have a mixture of seafood! Macadamia nut crusted fish is my favorite because the fish is cooked so well and works well with the asparagus and garlic mashed potatoes. I always try and get fish when I'm on the island since it's so fresh compared to a lot of places on the mainland. Prime rib: although I didn't get to try it, the person that ordered it enjoyed it! It was cooked exactly how they wanted it cooked and it came with the same garlic mashed potatoes that I ordered and enjoyed. One thing I forgot to take a picture of was the charcoal pandesal that comes with you meal and I have to say, I love them! They are small but served so warm and tasty! You can always ask for more! We decided to check out Basalt because of the high reviews and then we were able to easily book a table. I became a little wary as we walked closer and I saw how empty the restaurant was but we decided to still give it a try. We ordered the loco moco and charcoal pancakes with strawberry and guava syrup and truly enjoyed both. The pancakes were so light and fluffy and didn't have the usual doughy cakey flavor of typical pancake batter. The guava syrup reminded you that you were in the tropics. We seriously wiped up every bit of syrup with pancake. The loco moco had the right amount of gravy to rice and the ground beef was tender but not overly fatty. Service was perfunctory and efficient. Basalt Waikiki located in Duke's Lane is quickly becoming my new favorite place for breakfast! They offer a great breakfast menu selection daily from 7am to 2:30pm and if you go during the week, it's not at all crowded which makes getting a table or reservation very easy. On this occasion, I wanted something light so I ordered the Avocado Garden Toast - one of their signature dishes. The avocado is served on grilled wheat bread with cherry tomato, micro greens, watermelon radish, and pumpkin seeds. I didn't expect it to be so pretty or delicious! I was curious about the Basalt Charcoal Buttermilk Pancakes that's topped with guava-strawberry sauce, whipped cream, and mixed fresh berries so I ordered a side pancake. The server was nice enough to tell me the side pancake didn't come with all the toppings and suggested ordering a short stack instead which we did. The charcoal color is the draw, but did not affect the yummy taste of those super fluffy buttermilk pancakes. I loved the texture of the pancakes and the guava-strawberry sauce added just enough sweetness. Our breakfast was so delicious and relaxing that it really made an impression. I wish I could give a three and a half store. It wasn't quite a four but not a three. Basalt is located in the back of the Duke's Lane food court. Came here for restaurant week. They had a three course menu deal. We had a group of 6 of us so were able to try all their offerings on their featured menu for restaurant week. We found the courses very hit or miss. Starters: Their salad, while pretty lacked flavor, needed some salt to the dressing. The lobster bisque was decent. Bold seafood stock flavor. Entree: The rib eye and parmesan potatoes were absolutely delicious. The rib eye cooked to a med rare and was tender and juicy. Potatoes had a great flavor and nice texture. I found the uni and crab risotto to be bland and lacked flavor. Dessert: Chocolate mousse cake was okay. The macadamia nut tart which was a take on pecan pie was a nice bite. Usually a big dessert person but found myself underwhelmed. Service was prompt and courteous. Water was filled and he came to check on the table routinely. When the check came, we had asked to have it split into thirds on three credit cards. The server stated that wasn't possible and he had to know what items to put on which card to split the check. I found that really peculiar. He left for a bit assuming to ask for assistance. Took a while for him to return and when he did, I just asked him to put the complete check on my card and we would figure out on Venmo to split the check accordingly. I'd be curious to go back and try other things. I hear they validate if you park at Hyatt Centric. We parked in the International Market Place, which is near by. read more
