This was our first time here. The restaurant is darker and more upscale, so it's a nice setting for a date night. For early dinner, it seemed family friendly as well. We saw a few family with kids. Our server was great - friendly and very attentive. He noticed that we were not a fan of one of the dishes and took action. We had the hickory burger, the prime rib French dip and the seasonal veggies (Thai Brussels sprouts). My favorite was the prime rib French dip. It comes with a side of horseradish sauce and au jous dipping broth. The bread had a think layer of crisp and eat bite was delicious. The side of quinoa was also very refreshing and tasty. It had raisins and cashews in it for different flavors and textures. The hickory burger was also tasty esp with the sweet BBQ sauce. And we really loved the fries as well, perfectly cooked and perfect crisp. The Thai Brussels sprouts were a little too fish sauce flavored for me. I usually love Thai food and am a fan of fish sauce. We had reservations for Valentine's Day. The place was packed. Service was great. We were seated promptly, our server made sure to go over the menu with recommendations, and it did not take long for food to arrive to our table. The quality of the food is excellent. I recommend ordering the grilled artichokes. They had an excellent char, and the artichoke hearts are tender. The prime rib was cooked perfectly medium-rare. The sides of baked potato and mashed potato were also delicious. We enjoyed the 100 hour marinated ribeye, but the marinade is a little on the sweeter side. Asked on seeing several others enjoying it on our way out, it clearly is a well known go to for frequent patrons. My cousin said their ribs were the best but recently had taken a downturn the last 2-3 times he had them. But he decided to give them one final try. I was glad he did, because he let me try one. They are fork tinder with pretty good flavor. He had fries and they were smaller fries, not the oversized raw ones you often get in upscale restaurants. His wife had a good looking burger that she said was really good. Her side was beets. She gave me one because she wanted me to try them and they were really good. I had their steak sandwich. The steak was thin but cooked perfectly (med rare). I wound up taking it apart and eating it like a steak with bread on side. The bread was great. The onions and tomatoes were good. The sauce on the bun was good. The steak was flavorful and the chimchuri was good as well. My side was a pecan quinoa. It was rare for me to try it because normally I am not a fan of quinoa. I am glad I ordered it. It was probably the best I've ever had. To wrap up the meal we all shared a key lime pie. It was good (not great). Our waiter was great, attentive but not overly intrusive. Very nice and friendly. The only critique is that the restaurant is dark. Very very dark. My cousin had to use his phone light. I also saw several other tables with lights out. It seems to be the new trend for people to sit in the dark for some reason. The restaurant is decorated nice (from what you can see. Ha). As I walked out I looked around. Most tables had steaks. I had high expectations for Bartlett's (because of their association to Houston's) and they lived up to every one of them. The Spinach artichoke dip at Houston's was one of my all time faves so I could hardly wait to get it. And it was just as good as I remembered. The ambience, service and food were all excellent. It was a party of four to celebrate my birthday. Two friends had salads with protein added and the size was plentiful. Another friend had the veggie burger and fries and that seemed to disappear quickly. I ordered from the specials; Redfish with a butter sauce topped with Cajun spiced shrimp and mashed potatoes on the side. It was sooooooo good! For dessert the waiter bought me a slice of key lime pie with a graham cracker pecan crust topped with fresh whipped cream and it was delicious. My friends split the apple cobbler with ice cream and the spoonful I had was tasty. One thing I don't wanna forget to mention is their fresh house made lemonade. It was not too sweet and just tart enough, Yum! Our server was Evan and he was attentive, knowledgable of the menu, and made great recommendations! Came here for my birthday dinner on Saturday, September 13th around 5pm. I really wanted prime rib for my birthday dinner and the people of Reddit said to come here and I wouldn't be disappointed. They also said to make a reservation because sometimes it does get busy. I mentioned in the reservation notes that we were celebrating my birthday. We walked in and I noticed the mood lighting (which I loved) and everything was so clean and organized. Our server Claire was AMAZING! She was so knowledgeable about everything on the menu and had all the answers to our questions since it was our first time here. We ordered the Spinach & Artichoke Dip, and oh my goodness, it was the best spinach & artichoke dip we have ever had. My boyfriend was speechless and he couldn't stop eating it. My boyfriend ordered the Famous French Dip Sandwich and I of course ordered 12 oz Roasted Prime Rib. When my boyfriend tried his sandwich he literally threw his reading glasses on the table because it was that delicious. You had to be there to see his reaction, he said it was the best damn sandwich he's ever had. My prime rib was everything I had ever wanted, it melted in my mouth and it was not overly salted and it was PERFECT! This whole experience was amazing, from the amazing staff and the delicious food. It gets even better. Claire gave us dessert options and it was so hard to choose because she made everything sound so delicious. We ordered the sundae and i promise I'm not exaggerating, but this was probably the best sundae we both have ever had. What a wonderful experience we had here. Took my wife here for her birthday dinner with our 7 month old. Brandon was our server and he was wonderful. Very attentive and knowledgeable of the menu. Her steak ended up taking a little long (we had barely noticed we were having such a nice time) that the manager and chef both came out to apologize and offer a free dessert. Not necessary, but very much appreciated! We had the artichokes to start and those were incredible!! The steak was one of the best we've had and we both agreed that the French dip was reason enough to come back. To top it off, a random couple covered our bill! I think seeing us walk our daughter around while trying to eat was the reason, but we were unable to catch them to thank them. If that was you, you have no idea how much that meant to us!! Updated Review: We visit Bartlett's often, usually after 1:30-2 pm. The service is always top notch, food consistently great and experience just lovely. In the past couple of years, we have found their traditional salad is our favorite go-to. My husband gets fries and I get roasted beets. He has to share his fries but he hates beets. I win. The fries are so yummy, shoestring type, always fresh and tasty. The beets are the bomb (at least for beet lovers like me). Hamburgers are terrific. I have had the French Dip Sandwich, Fish of the Day sandwich and dinner and the ribs are too die for. I can't say enough about this place. A little pricey for some but oh so worth it. Delicious, substantial and very filling lunch chimichurri steak sandwich! So I am briefly visiting my daughter and she had a craving..: and here we are enjoying a quiet lunchtime steak sandwich- so it's not surprising that we both got the same, but I did get the delicious Pear Martini, and the artichoke appetizer, and boy oh boy that was awesome! The pear martini was just sweet enough to add that wonderful pear flavor- it was not overly sweet, just right. I really enjoyed that caramelizad pear slice at the end of my drink! The grilled artichokes came with a special mayonnaise sauce that I just could not have enough of: we had to get some to go with our sandwich leftovers it was that good. Finally, the sandwiches. Oh boy/ they were AWESOME. Mine was medium as requested and hers was well done: and the chimichurri was fresh and well made... this was so enjoyable I cannot recommend this enough! I have had much better at various other restaurants in Austin at a much better price. For $55 got a 12 oz prime rib with one side (I chose Brussels sprouts). No bread or salad provided ....just straight into the entree. While it was a nice cut and very tender, it had no flavor except for the au jus. The restaurant was packed and reservations are required (even for lunch) so plan accordingly; I did reserve 2 days in advance. There are no lunch specials ...just normal menu $$$. I eat out a lot and don't mind spending money if the food is delicious but I personally found Bartletts to be overpriced and subpar. I know there will be many diners that will disagree with this review ...as I said the restaurant was packed .... so they are obviously doing something right and not hurting for business. read more

I found out about Bartlett's rather circuitously when I was having lunch with my two closest fellow teachers and one of them pulled out a French Dip from Arby's. The conversation then turned to French Dips in general, and they both agreed that Bartlett's made one for the gods! Bartlett's, said I? On the way there, I did some research and discovered that they used to be Houston's of Austin, and Houston's in Houston was a regular pit stop for us when we lived there, so we were doubly psyched! We'll be gob-smacked if they kept that famous OG Houston's smoked salmon appetizer on the menu! We've tried to recreate it at home a zillion times with mixed results! Survey SAYS...they did! OMG! *cue Snoopy happy dance* Needless to say that we're most def starting with that! The atmosphere here is delightfully woody, dark, and atmospheric, and the bar mixology did NOT disappoint! My husband's diiiirty Grey Goose Martini was on point! Pricey, though! $40 for that, including a dry red for me, but you don't come here to penny pinch! This place that is one of the few restaurants remaining from "Old Austin" and it really highlights their attention to detail and I agree that the service here is impeccable. Our server made great recommendations and preemptively anticipated our needs. As an app, he recommended the grilled artichokes which were smoky and not too bitter. For an entree, I got the prime rib. We decided to come here after I discovered some of my favorite yelpers gave this place high marks. We arrived here at 6 PM on a Thursday evening without a reservation so we had a 20 minute wait for a table. This place gets busy early as there were no seats (30 spots more or less) at the spacious bar. For drinks, they have six good craft beers, a good selection of whiskeys, wines by the glass, and some good handcrafted cocktails, but no frozen daiquiris or margaritas. Unfortunately, I had their watered down version of the Aperol spritz which I do not recommend. The drink menu was considerable, however, the food menu was surprisingly limited with just three starters and six sandwiches. You could choose from one of five steak offerings or one pork chop or salmon item. Be warned that the least expensive steak starts at $40. We started with the grilled artichokes and they were smoky good. After the appetizer the server brought out two hot moist towels to wipe our hands off with, but I was disappointed that they do not offer a bread or roll choice before the meal. Heck, Roadhouse gets that right. It appears the wooden decor in the establishment absorbs much of the noise since it gets really loud when every booth is filled, although it was still quite a few decibles above our comfort level. For the main course, I ordered their most expensive steak for $55 and paired it up with a glass of a Napa red which came out at the correct cellar temperature, although it was just a 4-5 oz pour. The ribeye was good, but for the money I thought it should've been a little thicker, but at least it was cooked the way I like it. My wife had the house made veggie burger, and sadly, it just did not live up to her expectations and the avocado spread was not to her liking either. She ate just half of it. We did save room for dessert, so we ordered the apple walnut cobbler à la mode and it was really great. The app and dessert were a hit, the main course not so much. When it's time to settle up, they'll bring around the handheld device for you to sign off on. The service was perfectly on point and I do recommend a reservation even on a weeknight. Tonight, our experience at Bartlett was a fail. Many problems happened, from the delay in getting service to mistakes in the ordering. It could have really quickly turned sour. The Manager realized that and comped our entire meal and told us ahead of time. Even though it was a bad day at Barlett tonight, I have come to this restaurant for 25 years and it's normally a very good choice in town. I appreciated having a good Manager who recognized the failure and did the right thing. We tipped our waitress just as if nothing had happened and left in good spirit. Bartlett's honestly impressed me. I ordered the prime rib which came with a side or horseradish dip, jus, mashed potatoes, and I added on a side of the coleslaw. The portions were bigger than I expected, which is great for the price, and it was all very yummy. Sorry if it's weird that the mashed potatoes were my favorite. I also ordered the aperol spritz, which was nice and refreshing with not a strong alcohol taste at all. To top it off, the service was excellent - our server was very attentive and easy to get ahold of and fulfilled our requests promptly. Grilled artichokes were good, especially with the dipping sauce, but make sure you know how to eat it this way. Don't ask me how I know. Ha! Had the filet with garlic mashed potatoes, and they were so good. Seasoned and cooked perfectly. It came with a thick sliced tomato baked with parmesan. The Bartlett Pear Martini was so good that I opted to get a 2nd one. Lastly, I highly recommend the hot fudge sundae for dessert.
