We stopped here on our way out of town with no spectacular hopes other than the fact that we knew we could order gluten-free without having to worry about anything, specifically churros. What was supposed to be a 45 minute to an hour long lunch turned into a very pleasurable hour and 45 minute lunch because we had a waiter named Rafael. Rafael clearly loves his job and is very passionate about tequila, craft cocktails and pretty much the restaurant is a whole. It shows through his service and we couldn't help but notice the table of ladies next to us and how well he treated them. You may be thinking it's because they were all young girls, but they were not. It was a table of mix of older and younger women celebrating someone's birthday. You can tell the philosophy of the restaurant and the fact that they're already operating under the "unreasonable hospitality" tenets of that beloved Book in the hospitality industry. They offered them a champagne toast for the birthday and proceeded to give the birthday girl a gift before they left. That and the fact that he took his time chatting with us and sharing his thoughts on the menu as well as drinks and even bringing my husband a taste of a drink that they just discussed in passing, but my husband had declined since we had a 3 Hour drive ahead of us. Without a request or prompting from us, Rafael brought it out and said "I know you've got a drive but I just wanted you to taste this since we talked about it, so don't feel any pressure to finish it." We will be back for sure because literally everything was unbelievable. It reminded us very much of the best restaurant experience we had in San Jose del Cabo recently. We LOVE this place and have been back more times than we can count. The food is phenomenal, with a fresh, healthier take on Mexican cuisine that's still packed with flavor. It's genuinely crave-worthy, and there are several dishes we find ourselves thinking about long after we've left. Our only mild complaint is the service. The staff, especially the bartenders, often come across as a bit aloof and unfriendly. It's not enough to keep us from coming back because the food is that good, but a warmer, more welcoming attitude would easily take this place from great to exceptional. read more

If you're coming for the patio view, it's great--until the sun hits you. Then it's hot, loud, and honestly not worth it. The patio is a problem. If you're seated near the opening, the sun comes straight in no matter what. It gets extremely loud--so loud we couldn't hear our waiter explain the menu. Large groups (8-10 people) made it even worse. Add in the heat (on a mild Austin day, no less), and it's just uncomfortable. Service was poor. Our waiter was friendly but clearly overwhelmed with too many tables. We couldn't get his attention when we needed him. Bussers were no help--they dropped items and rushed back inside, ignoring attempts to flag them down. We accidentally ordered two "family-style" salads because no one explained it. That pretty much sums up the service: rushed, unclear, and inattentive. If you need anything--water, utensils, clarification--you have to interrupt them mid-drop-off or you won't get it. The prices don't match the experience. Food was decent, but portions and sides were disappointing. We got four tortillas for four people and couldn't get more. My steak had a great sauce but nothing to eat it with--no rice, no beans, nothing. For the price, that's ridiculous. Parking is also a hassle. Very little self-parking, and valet is pushed hard. The most frustrating part? As we left, there was plenty of staff standing around inside. Meanwhile, the patio--where service actually needed help--was understaffed and chaotic. Bottom line: overpriced, loud, hot, and poorly managed. Sit inside if you go, or skip it altogether, again the prices don't match the service ! read more

My only bug-a-boo was, im pretty sure our waitress forgot about us for like 20 minutes prior to putting in our food orders... so when we got tell her all that we wanted, everything came out together. Pro tip: budget extra time for parking at the Arboretum during dinner hours you can also opt for valet parking. It's perfectly located and a great spot for a group, business dinner, or family setting. From the first bite it was clear the hype is earned. The guacamole was a great opener, the crab tostadas is a "must have", and both the halibut and carne asada were delicious. Stopped by Bulevar Mexican Kitchen for happy hour and really enjoyed the experience. They specialize in utilizing modern approaches combined with traditional Latin American flavors and practices. The atmosphere is fire lit with a high energy bar, tall ceilings and big glass windows. I think that this location has one of the sunset best views on the outdoor patio in all of ATX. I appreciate that they have happy hour every day of the week which makes for a great value dining option. Plenty of parking on site. We did not have a reservation so the patio was reserved so got to sit in the bar which is first come first serve seating. We started with the Hielo Mezcal with rey campero espadin blood orange, lime and agave. On Sundays they have a specialty cocktail and I tried the Mangonada Rita with mango and chamoy. From the happy hour menu, we tried the Tacos Del Dia with fish tacos and it the fish was perfectly cooked with sliced avocado and a flavorful sauce. Also tried Tacos Sucios with prime flank, rajas, queso asada, salsa fuego and crema. This particular taco was a bit spicy for my liking. Unfortunately I was sad to see that the Caesar salad was removed from the happy hour menu. The lettuce is fresh and crisp with a flavorful dressing and a crispy cheese garnish on top makes for a very flavorful salad. The Wood Roasted Bone Marrow with ayocote bean and queso gordita, cherry tomato salsa, salsa verde. I added tortillas to eat the bone marrow. Wasn't a huge fan of the Gordita but could have used some greens to balance out the flavors. Overall, a great place for happy hour with elevated Mexican dishes and thoughtful execution. Came in for my birthday dinner with a friend, and this place definitely lived up to the praise that I'd been hearing. Probably a top gluten-free restaurant of the city, if not the top. The crab guac had ample crab, and the aguachile verde was absolutely beautiful looking. I'd say the duck tetela was likely the most flavorful dish of the meal, with the sweet potato coming through with such a delicious sweet warm pop of flavor. Lastly, the ribeye I had was amazing. I ordered the "smallest" one they had at 42oz, and it was still a marvel coming out. Massive amount of steak that I'll be eating for the next day. Perfectly cooked, deliciously fatty in a way only a ribeye can satisfy, and the smokiness from the post oak really made the flavor exceptional. Bulevar is a hidden gem in the area, literally. If Yelp hadn't directed me to Bulevar I wouldn't have even thought to check this area. Moreover, the place is open later than the rest of the restaurants in the area; it's a low bar since most places close around 9 and I was looking mostly for a late night drink. The parking space is large and next to another restaurant and not much else so even when it was busy it was relatively easy to find a spot. I walked in and sat at the bar and looked at their cocktail menu. I usually like whiskey based cocktails but they had an Oaxacan Old Fashioned and figured why not? Now, I was afraid that Bulevar might have just been a fancied up version of Chili's but my drink was well made and the bartenders definitely knew what they're doing. I felt snack-y so I ended up getting the guac and chips, since it still was close to closing time and didn't want to annoy the kitchen. We visited to celebrate our anniversary after hearing so many great things about the food and views and quickly realized why it's so highly recommended! The smell of the wood fire hits you as soon as you walk up, setting the tone and really getting you excited for the entire experience you're about have. I'm typically not a huge mole person so I was hesitant on ordering anything with it, but heard they were known for their 800 day aged mole. I asked if it was possibly to try a small amount to see if that would be something we'd enjoy and she brought out a sample to try and WOW! They do a savory style mole and it is JAW DROPPING! Creamy, luscious and definitely worth ordering! This is coming from someone who is not a mole person, well at least the sweet kind of mole. Now I know theres a better one out there! While I couldn't get over how incredible the mole was, we were dying to try their carne asada and the venison chops that they had on the menu, especially since you don't see venison often. The carne asada was well cooked and flavorful and came with a super cheesy chile relleno. but the venison double chops completely stole the show--exceptional tenderness, flavor, and execution. Their margaritas were excellent, especially the fact that you could make them spicy with their house-made pepper mix, where you can really taste the fresh jalapeños. They surprised us with a champagne toast and anniversary sweets (Fresh feeling strawberry ice cream and shortbread buttery confetti type cookies) that made the night feel extra special. We did follow that with a chocolate cake, that didn't feel like it would put you in a sugar coma and had a cherry guajillo puree that gave it a little spiced kick. The front dining area around the bar may have been a little noisy but the space behind them, seperated by a decorative wall, was quieter and easy to hear the people at your table. I loved Z'Tejas, but Bulevar just knocks it out of the park. If you visited Z'Tejas, you will immediately notice the beautiful renovations, including a large bar area as you enter. The big patio is still in place, which is a great space to enjoy a cocktail when the weather cooperates. They do have a daily happy hour that runs Mon-Thu 5-6 pm Fri-Sat 4-6 pm. Their HH includes some small plates at the bar. Take note, get there early, or it will be hard to find a seat. This is not a TexMex or typical Mexican restaurant, as there are some very interesting Non-Mex options like bone marrow, hamachi, and quite a few steak options. My carne asada arrived with oh so tender flank steak and was spiced perfectly with chile relleno and toreado butter. Hubby ordered a steak, and it was cooked perfectly as ordered, and he stated it was as good, if not better, than what he had at the downtown steak houses. Their bar features many tequilas and mezcal options as well as a few local beers. Service was excellent throughout our meal, and every question we asked was thoughtfully answered. This was a really elegant and romantic spot for a date, though unfortunately, no romance was actually experienced. The entrance gave me upscale resort vibes. We sat outside with a lovely hill country view. It was really hot, and thankfully they had fans blowing. I wish they had ice in the water though because the water became warm within minutes. For appetizers, the duck carnitas tetela was a standout. It was very unique to me. It has duck, flatbread, and sweet potato. So good. The taco del fuego was very tasty too, and it came with three small tacos. The snapper aguachile had a tangy taste with an orange slice inside. It was good, but probably too refined for my taste buds. For my drink, I got the fresas sonrojadas cocktail with vodka instead of tequila, and it was sweet and refreshing. For the main course, I got the halibut a la plancha. This was honestly not as good as I had hoped. It was on a giant bed of leaves, and the leaves did not really compliment the fish well. The fish itself was quite plain-tasting with some very spicy sauce, but it didn't really bring out the flavours of the fish. I normally like halibut, but this one was just okay. Bulevar is owned by the same group behind ATX Cocina in downtown, but unlike its sister location, it has its own private lot where you can either self-park or valet without the chaos. Since it's outside of proper Austin, the space is bigger, making it great not just for your typical small groups but for larger parties as well. My corporate office is based up north and this spot is always a hit with my executives. It gives Austin upscale without the traffic. Excellent food, great service, nice atmosphere, pretty expensive so nice for a special occasion. We had a 6:45 reservation for 3 people at Bulevar on a Saturday. It was packed but we were seated right on time. It's a very nice restaurant, with nice views of the hills. It's large and pretty loud so may be tough for someone who doesn't hear well. Also, we sat in the side dining area and the lighting was very dim. Just something to think about if some guests don't see well. We decided to start with an appetizer. We had the Duck Carnitas, which were delicious and a good size for 3 people. Here's what we ordered for entrees. - Duck enmoladas - duck enchiladas with an amazing molé (see more on the molé below). Fantastic! - Carne asada - the toreados butter really kicks this up from your typical carne asada. Also really delicious. - Arroz con carne - this seemed like kind of a take on cochinita pibil with the banana leaf but had short ribs and molé instead of pork and achiote. Unfortunately , it didn't have much molé and the beef wasn't all that interesting tasting. It was good but not up to the level of the other two entrees. We also ordered two sides. The Wood Charred Broccolini was a bit too smoky for my taste but the citrus whipped goat cheese, cashew, tomato conserva, and cotija made a delicious sauce. Our other side was the 700+ Day Mole & Heirloom Corn Tortillas. The mole was amazing and the star of our entire excellent dinner. It was so rich and complicated tasting that we just oohed and ahhed with every bite. I would be happy with big bowl of this molé and a stack of tortillas. The service was excellent throughout. Our main server was very friendly, gave great suggestions and took the time to chat with us about the restaurant. I wish I could remember her name because she deserves a shoutout. Multiple servers brought out the food fresh and hot. This is a pretty high-end restaurant so don't expect your typical Mexican entrees and expect to pay at least $50 per person without drinks. If I could give more than 5 stars for the review I would. Anthony was our server and he was attentive, knowlegeable and so so personable. The food was delicious as usual..I've never had a bad meal at Bulevar (and I've been there 15+ times). What set the meal apart was the service. We never wanted for anything.. and then..the check came. It was a business meal and I paid for it. It had been a really long week, so my brain was not performing on all cylinders. Between talking and closing out the receipt, I gave him a 100% tip--he was wonderful, but that level of tip would never fly in my expense report. I didn't realize I had made that mistake and was out of the door already when he came to find me outside so I could fix my error. I did (and gave him a great tip). How amazing is that. Now I neded to add honest to the list of compliments. To top off the evening, he even helped me into my uber. I cannot express how special Anthony is--the other servers I've had in the past have been great as well, he just really went above and beyond. read more

The margaritas were really good also: they make their own agave nectar, and it showed in how refreshing the drink was. I came here during happy hour with a group of girlfriends and we all left happy and satisfied. We sat outside with a beautiful sunset view over the Texas hill country. Despite the heat, they kept us cool with fans that didn't disrupt the ambiance. Our server was also very sweet and patient with our large table!
