Date night...another speakeasy cloak and dagger adventure. My hubby surprised me with a night out at Prohibition ATX speakeasy. Of course, he had the scoop on speakeasies as he is a human encyclopedia. Speakeasies date back to Prohibition (interestingly the name of this speakeasy), when the 18th Amendment banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol. The demand for alcohol continued and led to the growth of thousands of hidden bars across the United States called speakeasies. Speakeasies birthed some types of jazz music, permitted women to drink in the speakeasies and sometimes other criminal activities. Because speakeasies were illegal, they frequently required passwords, secret knocks, or membership cards. Folks in speakeasies had to speak quietly in order to avoid attracting the po po aka police. With that backdrop, Prohibition ATX speakeasy was also guised with secrecy. Initially, we accidentally went into The Mill Bar & Grill thinking it was Prohibition ATX. Even the location of Prohibition ATX was clouded in secrecy. It was down the sidewalk to back of the strip mall disguised as a bookstore. Next, we rang a doorbell near a large mirror. Then what appeared to be a bookshelf was a door that was opened from the inside. Wow!!! What a cool way to enter Prohibition ATX. My hubby and I listened to cool Rhythm and Blues music and had some drinks. Apparently, our bartender, Marcus curated our playlist (examples below). Sooner or Later - Tonio Armani Pour me a Drink - Sir Charlie Jones Whatcha Done Now - Leela James These melodic sounds drew us in and made for an enjoyable evening. If you are looking for a unique experience, we recommend Prohibition ATX.

Excellent as always. Great mixologist! Patio is really nice but mosquitos love me and the rain left many puddles. They have no food options. Excellent service!

Love love love Prohibition Pros: Mysterious interior, delicious drinks, awesome service from mixologist ( Jaime), cool music that is not too loud for conversation, comfy seating, perfect for dates, sensual dark interior, food available, back patio Cons: spending too much time there.

After dinner we hit up this spot for some live music. We were not disappointed with the speakeasy vibe. The place had a few people and great drinks. They even gave me a free drink as it was my batch weekend!

Came here on a Friday night and it was cool spot hidden inside a shopping plaza. They had live music and it was kinda loud so we opted to sit outside so we can actually have a conversation. The outdoor seating was pretty nice and the server periodically comes out to grab our orders. The drinks on the menu were all pretty good and the bartender also recommended their special sangria for the night. Overall, a pretty chill place to enjoy some nice cocktails.

Very cool little spot in a random corner of northwest Austin. Tucked into the far corner of a very unassuming strip center, it's easy to be confused by this place but once inside (through the faux bookcase entrance) your confusion will give way to surprise at the cool decor, friendly bar staff, comfortable vibe and great drinks that this strange little bar serves up in spades!

Cool speakeasy nestled away... great place to bring out of town guests which we did. The place is chill and service was too. Don't remember any food options but was focused on drinking and talking so didn't really care. Didn't understand the double sink in the guys restroom but again who cares?

What a cool spot! Hidden entrance and great ambience- Will be back

Hidden entrance speakeasy. Low lights and chill ambience. Drinks were spot on. Food comes from restaurant next door. Fun date night!

It's everything a speakeasy should be and more. The hidden bar behind a bookshelf upon entry, dark and mysterious decor, cool Halloween decorations, fab drinks, great liquor selections, and musty smell of cigarette smoke. Did I mention handsome young bartenders!? Oh yeah!

Recommendation from the bartender. Top notch.

The vibe was super cool. They had just opened when we got there so we had the place to ourselves. The bartender knew his cocktails and whiskey... the recommendations were on point!

    Neat place!

Cool fun spot! It's similar to a speakeasy over by Anderson Mill - the main door is hidden behind a bookcase/shelf- similar the Firehouse in downtown. My friends and I stopped in after a movie by Lakeline. You order at the bar and grab a seat to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. There's no food served here, but live piano was being played and decent cocktails. I enjoyed the vibes and will probably be back to hang out here!

I did not even know this place existed until this Tuesday. A new friend invited me to meet there before we sang karaoke at The Mill nearby. Pleasant surprise to discover this new speakeasy with a neat underground bar vibe. They were out of luxardo liquor so I couldn't order one of my favorite drinks, The Last Word, or introduce my friend to it. Same was true for the Aviation. I settled for their dry gin martini with a twist. The bartender recommended their house gin when I inquired about the types of gin they had, emphasizing that the cocktails were crafted for the menu for a reason. It was a good cocktail! My friend had the French 75. If I venture that way again, I look forward to having The Last Word. :-)

It's a cute place but drinks were terrible. I was so excited to try the place but sadly won't be back due to terrible tasting drinks.

Drinks are expensive and served in what feels like miniature target brand, low-quality glasses, which makes the value proposition hard to justify the steep $14 price. The atmosphere is where it really falls apart. The space is set up like a bright, casual brunch hall rather than a cocktail bar--harsh, bright lighting, uncomfortable wooden chairs, and basic wooden square tables that don't align with the concept AT ALL. There's no food offering, yet the environment feels designed for daytime dining rather than an evening bar experience. From a design and hospitality standpoint, it's difficult to understand how this made it to opening in its current state. Even a VERY basic understanding of lighting and ambiance would suggest this setup is fundamentally mismatched--ESPECIALLY for something like a date night. If you're looking for a comfortable or intimate setting, this is NOT it. You'd honestly have a better experience sitting outside a gas station with a 6-pack of Coors Light.

And, at both breakfasts Amy made me feel especially welcome! The table came with a bottle of water for self-service, which I appreciated. The wine list was of good quality. My server at dinner was able to give me a solid recommendation for one to pair with my salmon. She was dead on with how well it complimented the fish. As for the salmon, it wasn't overly seasoned and was incredibly flaky. It was a good size as well. For breakfast, The Breakfast Plate's eggs were cooked perfectly with appropriately cooked bacon. I enjoyed the potatoes that accompanied it as well. The Buttermilk Pancakes meal was a failure though. The pancakes were gooey inside. My server, Amy, offered to have them remade, but I declined the offer. So I accepted a parfait, which was easily one of the best I've had in Austin. The granola with the berries were perfectly balanced, and the granola wasn't super chunky. Amy was 100% invested in my meal satisfaction. The dining room is quite pretty with lovely set tables. Every time I ate, I felt a tad underdressed! But they don't care if you're comfortably casual, and i saw a family with small children looking very relaxed and vacationy and they were welcome.

That's because we later realized that it was actually the Cambria Hotel's in-building restaurant. We also realized we didn't need reservations, since we and one other family were the only ones dining in for Sunday brunch. The woman who attended to us was very friendly and accommodating. I was able to get a flavorful cappuccino and eggs benedict made vegetarian friendly. The Hollandaise sauce was swapped out for queso, which was a fun twist! All-in-all, a great brunch was had by all. The food was not the best we'd ever had in regards to other brunch places, but knowing that crowds are not a problem here makes this a great back-up spot if the other brunch places in town are backed up!
