I am a sucker for a speakeasy when it is done right. I love the idea of being somewhere that not everyone knows about. It feels like an IYKYK atmosphere. Located off Anderson Mill in the corner of a strip mall is a bookshelf with a door on the right side. If you cannot figure out the entrance, there is a doorbell to ring as well. I believe it is owned by the same people who own The Mill bar right next door, which makes it feel like a cool bonus space. My friend and I sat next to a faux fireplace, where we were greeted by the only bartender working and placed our order. Once he opened the tab, it was disappointing that he never came back to check if we wanted another drink. It wasn't super busy on the Monday we went, but since he was the only one manning the bar, the bartender was always doing something, so I don't blame him fully for not checking back in with us. I ordered a drink called the Velvet Vice. It looked nothing like the picture and tasted similar to an Aviation cocktail with egg whites. I happened to really like it. It is a very relaxed space, but once the speakeasy gimmick wears off, it does not have much else going for it. It is still a cool place, but I am not sure it was worth the lengthy drive to get there. Date night...another speakeasy cloak and dagger adventure. My hubby surprised me with a night out at Prohibition ATX speakeasy. Of course, he had the scoop on speakeasies as he is a human encyclopedia. Speakeasies date back to Prohibition (interestingly the name of this speakeasy), when the 18th Amendment banned the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcohol. The demand for alcohol continued and led to the growth of thousands of hidden bars across the United States called speakeasies. Speakeasies birthed some types of jazz music, permitted women to drink in the speakeasies and sometimes other criminal activities. Because speakeasies were illegal, they frequently required passwords, secret knocks, or membership cards. Folks in speakeasies had to speak quietly in order to avoid attracting the po po aka police. With that backdrop, Prohibition ATX speakeasy was also guised with secrecy. Initially, we accidentally went into The Mill Bar & Grill thinking it was Prohibition ATX. Even the location of Prohibition ATX was clouded in secrecy. It was down the sidewalk to back of the strip mall disguised as a bookstore. Next, we rang a doorbell near a large mirror. Then what appeared to be a bookshelf was a door that was opened from the inside. Wow!!! What a cool way to enter Prohibition ATX. My hubby and I listened to cool Rhythm and Blues music and had some drinks. Apparently, our bartender, Marcus curated our playlist (examples below). I just want to come back! What a wonderful environment right behind a book shelf. I went in a week day to avoid crowds and be able to really sink into the ambiance of this very unique place. The experience you create is yours to keep, either at the bar to mingle and chat or in a more intimate space, you call the shots. This is my type of place, where going there and enjoy an evening with a drink and good conversation is part of the plan. I had the aperol spritz which is very easy to make but at the same time, I had very bad ones before in other places. This one was perfect in my opinion! I also liked the fact that we were not bothered constantly by any wait staff, if we needed to order we made it happen, but no one interrupted our very interesting conversation and that's such a plus. For that alone is one of those places on the top of my list. The smoking could be a tad much, still it was not terrible to want to leave. I honestly can't wait to make plans to come back and there's so much more to try. The different cocktails and definitely sit at the bar. Came here on a Friday night and it was cool spot hidden inside a shopping plaza. They had live music and it was kinda loud so we opted to sit outside so we can actually have a conversation. The outdoor seating was pretty nice and the server periodically comes out to grab our orders. The drinks on the menu were all pretty good and the bartender also recommended their special sangria for the night. Overall, a pretty chill place to enjoy some nice cocktails. read more

We found this fun hidden gem in North Austin. I was looking for a cocktail lounge and this was exactly what I wanted. They had great drinks, a cool dark atmosphere and the bartenders were all very nice and friendly. We stopped in for a drink before dinner reservations so it was early and we were the only ones there. As we were getting ready to leave the band for the night had just showed up and was setting up. I'm excited to check it out and enjoy live music on my next visit. I like this little speakeasy in North Austin. It's different than the vibe around the area. I have met some interesting people at the bar leading to great conversation. I'm not a huge fan of their patio area, every time I go I get devoured by mosquitoes! I do enjoy their creative drinks and indoor area. Cool fun spot! It's similar to a speakeasy over by Anderson Mill - the main door is hidden behind a bookcase/shelf- similar the Firehouse in downtown. My friends and I stopped in after a movie by Lakeline. You order at the bar and grab a seat to relax and enjoy the atmosphere. I did not even know this place existed until this Tuesday. A new friend invited me to meet there before we sang karaoke at The Mill nearby. Pleasant surprise to discover this new speakeasy with a neat underground bar vibe. They were out of luxardo liquor so I couldn't order one of my favorite drinks, The Last Word, or introduce my friend to it. Same was true for the Aviation. I settled for their dry gin martini with a twist. The bartender recommended their house gin when I inquired about the types of gin they had, emphasizing that the cocktails were crafted for the menu for a reason. It was a good cocktail! My friend had the French 75. If I venture that way again, I look forward to having The Last Word. :-) read more

This was such a cute spot! I didn't know there was a speakeasy that was so close to where I live. The experience starts from the moment you park, I won't lie when I say it was a little hard to find this place but that's part of it! Without giving much away, it's tucked away and there's no sign for it. Once you enter, it's a whole different atmosphere. It's dark, some good tunes playing and an intimate spot. I came here with a friend for happy hour on a random Thursday and it was just us and the bartender. They made some great drinks, my friend had an old fashioned & I had the sad songs and waltzes - they were both very well made. The bartender cracked jokes and talked to us which added to the fun. Their happy hour is $2 off cocktails however there is no price written in the menu at all. The establishment doesn't serve any food but their drinks are so well worth it. I'd recommend this place to anyone who'd prefer to stay up north and enjoy craft cocktails without the craziness of downtown Austin. read more

The bartenders were very kind and welcoming, even when we sat at some chairs away from the bar. They took our drink order and brought it to us where we were sitting - a nice surprise! The Mississippi Summers cocktail was well balanced, with a lovely citrus taste. The vibe inside is very cool. The entry way is through a book case that takes you into a back room with lower lighting. There's still plenty of light to see your drink and other people. The live mural on the wall above the fireplace is fun to watch. There's old movies playing on the tvs (and sports on some). Went here on a Saturday night to meet friends. The parking lot is shared with other businesses so it gets full. The entry is typical speakeasy with the book case. I love that it's super spacious and plenty of seating. They do have a big screen so we were able to watch the game. Once the game was over the music was turned on. The drinks are a bit pricey but they use top shelf alcohol. Bartender service can be slow when it is packed but otherwise not bad. I love the cleanliness of the restrooms and how friendly the staff is. They have signature drinks and a bar at the opposite end has food. This could easily become a regular hang out spot but again it's pricey. read more

I just tried the Jolene and it was excellent, am definitely interested in going back and trying more drinks. They did have a large patio and a firepit, it was not lit up when we went but as the weather continues getting colder I'm sure it will be used more. read more

What a fun find! Literally! You have to find your way in by pushing through the bookcase. There isn't a sign or anything pointing you towards the bar so you have to know it's there to get in. The drink menu is super fun! Lots of cool choices and delicious drinks. We had a party of 5 and each got a different drink. They were all good. The espresso martini was good but very small. The mai tai was super strong so if you're wanting a kick, this is it. The band playing was incredible! Shelly was really great and her partner on cello was fantastic! I'd like to hire them for a party!! I am a former smoker, so being in a smoking bar was a lot for me. It smells so bad and then my hair and clothes reeked when I left. I thought you couldn't smoke inside a bar in Austin anymore? Anyway, I'd go back if I was on that side of town, id just hope it was a slow day so there aren't too many smokers there. read more

Easily the highlight of the whole trip. We popped in and were the only ones sitting in originally. Took a bit to get in since had never been there before, and didn't know to just push past the bookcase to get through. I believe I had called because I wasn't sure. Jordan was a doll. Tried a few drinks, grabbed a few dealer's choice as well, and the conversations were great along with the drinks. We were able to smoke inside as well which isn't for everyone, but a nice convenience for those who do. Something I'd easily return to, and definitely will if in the area again. Love this spot! My sister and I stumbled upon it. It is the last storefront without a named above the door, about 5 doors down from The Mill Tavern. The drinks were delicious!! I had the Old Smokey and a Smokey old fashioned, both of which I would 100% have again. My sister had an espresso martini that the bartender made off-menu for her, it was pretty good too. The drinks were what you would expect to pay, and were definitely on point! here's the kicker...the bartender is a younger gentlemen...one that you might question if he can make good drinks...well, holly cow - this young gentlemen knows his craft! The inside has a nice vibe but if you do not want to smell like smoke then I recommend not coming. My old fashioned was tasty, just how I like it. When you drink the old Smokey it starts off real sweet and ends smokey. FYI they don't have a sign outside. This spot is nice and hidden in a strip mall near the Apple campus. My friend and I ordered the pursuit of happiness and the rye not. We thoroughly enjoyed our drinks with no complaints. This is coming from someone who frequents speakeasies - the prices are pretty reasonable. Overall, this place is legit especially with the ability to smoke a cigar inside after a long day of at work.
