The entry was hilarious. the bartender saw us lurking outside, asked for the code, then just gave it to us like "don't share it with anyone." Sure, sir. Walked into a moody red-lit room and the vibe was honestly pretty cool, especially since we got there early. Drinks sounded fancy but turned out to be straight-up regret. I can't believe I'm just now checking out Floppy Disk Repair Co., aka Red Headed Stepchild. From the outside it doesn't even look like a bar, but iykyk. So fun getting in since there's a keycode needed to enter. You can grab it from their website or from the bartender next door. Once inside, the whole place is glowing in red light and feels like stepping into some weird retro horror movie fever dream. The menu is huge with all kinds of wild drinks to try, and the staff totally match the vibe, funny, friendly, and clearly having a good time. The music was loud in the best way with 80s and 90s hits playing. The decor is horror movie stuff like The Shining, Psycho, Chucky, and more little details everywhere you look. They even have some bar swings, which looks like such fun spot! It's a tiny bar with a limit of only 50 people, so it feels crowded fast, but that's kind of what makes it fun. A cool little speakeasy in downtown Austin. There is a code to get in, but we were lucky as they weren't busy the night we went :) The staff are so warm and energetic. LOVE! The menu is really fun, and the names of the drinks are edgy. I kind of forgot what what we got but it was delicious, and has mezcal in it. Only nit is towards the end of our visit, they turned up the music SO LOUD, my ears hurt and my voice also hurt from yelling while trying to make conversation. read more

Visited Red Headed Stepchild Speakeasy behind the "Floppy Disk Repair" sign for a fun night out with some friends. We loved how you tell the doorman a code to enter, and the intriguing 1980s to early 2000s horror movies vibe (even the bathrooms are decorated with bloody handprints and a special ode to the Shining). Deciding what to order was difficult given the extensive menu and unique options. The description for each drink was a nice touch. The menu doesn't list prices, but our group's drinks were typical Austin cocktail prices (around $16). Our group all ordered different drinks and we enjoyed each one. I will note that it is a small space and can get pretty packed, with shared tables and some groups standing. Because of this they were also out of a few of our top picks when we visited. We did have to bust out the phone flashlight to read the menu, as it was very dark. But the employees were friendly and helpful and we enjoyed visiting this unique speakeasy. read more

Cozy nostalgic place with cool decor and dark vibes. Good strong drinks and funny service. Seating is nice we had a group of 6 and got acquainted in a dark corner booth lol. Wasn't quite sure what to expect and you def need the code to get in. After entering the code (and it working!) walked into the venue which is very cold. Almost freezing, so bring a sweater if you're not a fan. There was one other party there, that departed shortly after our arrival, so we had the place to ourselves. This was around 5 on a Thursday so definitely not prime time. The decor is like chainsaw massacare meets a production crew. Very dark lighting, had Jaws playing on the vintage TV. Drinks were all pretty raunchy which made for an enjoyable ordering process cause you couldn't help but laugh. The bar tender Steve was great and the drinks he made delicious. He was friendly and answered all our questions about the history of the bar and the backstory for the decor/drinks. Typical pricing around $20 or so for a dink but hey, you're paying for the experience. And it was an experience! read more

The bouncer was super nice and does a great job of keeping the potential troublemakers out. This is a popular and well-known speakeasy. Let's face it for some reason most of them aren't secret anymore. The fun part is that it's code only entrance and you kind of need to be in the know for that. Not really hard to figure out but can take a bit of work. I can't go into much more detail about that part. Lol. Y'all understand, right? It's got a pretty small interior making it quaint and comfy, special almost. I really dig the decor that lends to the unique vibe. The cocktails are freaking good. Expensive ($20-$25 & up; some as high as $40) but worth it for the experience. The place is decorated pretty cool (there was a funky smell though) and there are two "swing" seats at the bar. There aren't too many tables so it's nice and cozy and dark. We were there on a weeknight so it wasn't packed. Many locals came in and out to talk to the bartenders which made for a chill environment. 100/10 experience! I cannot wait to visit Austin again and grab a drink or two at Floppy Disk Repair (also known as Red Headed Stepchild)! This is one of the best speakeasies I've ever been to for many reasons. First of all, getting inside is no easy feat. The bar, which appears like a Floppy Disk Repair shop from the outside, has a single black steel door. A keypad next to the door requires a code to get inside. The bar's website is bare bones but check Reddit for the necessary link to sign up for text messages from the bar. This is how you get the code for the door! The code changes monthly. Once inside, the bar is like another world! It's intimate and lit entirely with red lights! I visited around Halloween so the decorations were taken up a notch, but creepy decor is a part of the bar's norm! The decor even makes its way into the bathrooms with "REDEUM" across one of the mirrors. My fellow guest and I sat at the bar and ordered three drinks: Lean in my Cup, Nipple Clamp and Woo Girl. The Nipple Clamp is made with Captain Crunch-infused milk and served in a glass milk jar. The taste? Immaculate. The presentation? Unmatched. The other drinks were so tasty too! The Lean in my Cup is made with grape soda, which was so refreshing and nostalgic. And the drinks, while they appear small, pack a punch! My fellow guest and I sat at the bar and chatted with the two bartenders throughout our visit. They were super friendly and one even made us a free drink! Don't waste your time at this place. I used to believe that this place was awesome. The rude and disrespectful owner ruined it for me. I was told today(Saturday July 13,2024)that I was ruining the vibe of the place by helping people get in with the current code. Me giving them business and more money was a negative thing that ruined the vibe of the place. I'm no longer giving out the code to get into the place to anyone because I refuse to give them more new customers or more money.I will never step foot into the Floppy Disk Repair Company again. The atmosphere is great--cozy and intimate--and the drinks are absolutely fantastic: well-balanced, creative, and worth the hype. What a fun speakeasy. I mean not the most secretive speakeasy as there is a large sign out front but very cool to visit nonetheless the inside had some very tasteful decor of decapitated doll heads and spooky figures so it seems like it's Halloween all the time! We went on a Tuesday just after happy hour so there was no wait and plenty of tables. Our server was very nice and helped us with drink recommendations based off what we were feeling and the drinks we ordered were all really good. A bit expensive but that's what to expect for craft cocktails and I think it's well worth for a tasty pre-concert drink. Will be happy to come back and take out out of town friends here. read more

The Floppy Disk Repair Co. looks pretty basic and retro on the outside, but the inside has some very creepy decor. I really wanted to like this speakeasy, but it is absurdly expensive. The room is pretty small and tight. I was annoyed because my friend ordered a drink and I told the bartender I wasn't ready to order. He asked me if I wanted water and I said yes. He gave me a can of Liquid Death and opened it, so I couldn't refuse it. My friend was charged for this water, which is honestly really irritating. Free tap water is one of the luxuries of living in the US. Okay, so after complaining about the insane prices, I will say that the drinks were really good. Their menu has lots of cool cocktails to choose from. A lot of the drinks don't have prices listed. It is truly an exhilarating surprise. I had the drinks "I'm in Love with the Cocoa" and "Freshmen Experimentation." The cocoa drink was served in a super cute (very tiny) glass bottle with cocoa puffs on top. It added an element of amusement to the evening as we chuckled over the clever names while making our selections. This playful touch added even more uniqueness to the bar. Bartenders do a good job of keeping you served even when the place is very packed. Vibe is not quite speakeasy, very much "keep Austin weird". This is definitely a unique speakeasy! We were heading to another speakeasy and my husband knew the code for this place so we went here as well. It has a dark vibe, the lights are doll heads and the decor is somewhat morbid in a good way. The drinks we got were delicious, we got two rounds and they were great! I got the trix are for kids and their Peewee Herman. We all tried one another's beverages and none were disappointing! The service was also nice they did not bother us often but checked on us an appropriate amount. We parked in the parking garage and got SXSW rates which were very affordable! $20 for 8 hours!! Don't get me wrong, I'm just as much a fan of "the hidden speakeasy" as anyone, but if I'm going to put in work to find out a code to get in, make sure the code works at the door and then make sure the experience is worth the work. Having been to several other speakeasies in Austin, I was least impressed with the vibe or service at this one. The drinks on the other hand, were great. We went a little earlier in the evening, so that likely didn't help the vibe. All that work to get a code and then there 4 people in your bar? Doesn't make sense. We then sat for about 10 minutes until a bartender spoke to us (keep in mind it was empty) and it is such a dark place it's hard to read their extensive cocktail menu. Finally I had the bartender recommend something and I really enjoyed the cocktail. Not sure I'd be back, but now I can at least check it off my speakeasy list. read more

Find the secret code and you may enter! If you haven't done this at least once, you do need to. I've been there a half dozen times, so obviously I like it. Most nights, it's not super crowded, and most nights we love the music! The drink names are over the top, and some of the drinks are too which we do enjoy. However, this is not a bargain place, so beware as you will spend some money here. The Glory Hole is my favorite drink - but it is on fire when served. Just the idea of a speakeasy is an attraction. You can get the code from a local bar, such as cockfight, but if you are really lucky, maybe you can convince an exiting patron to give you the code. It is a not a big space inside, but there is some bar seating (kind of a low bar, not big bar stools like you may be used to). Several tables along the perimeter. There are a couple of windows, but they are darked out so no passer-bys outside can peak in. Adds to the exclusivity. Bartenders were great. They offered great guidance on what drink to get (or not to get). We really liked some of the smoked drinks - they smoke it in front of you. Also a fan of the Irish car bomb with my favorite left hand milk stout. Drink menu is extensive with a lot of options. Prices were similar to fancy cocktails at an upscale place. The space is fairly small and intimate, so if you want a table or seating, I recommend getting there early-ish. If you get there during peak hours, you'll still likely be seated, you just may have to wait in a line outside. They have a few tables inside that can seat 4-8 (depending which one) comfortably. The bar has seats that are swings hanging from the ceiling which are quite cool. The cocktails are great and each come with an entertaining name.
