We were hoping that they were going to be showing both games of the World Cup since Mexico and South Africa were playing at the exact same time and we were sure that all the bars on East. We're going to be playing Mexico instead of South Africa so we went there and it was so much fun and they were playing both games and we got a bunch of beers and we ended up playing the buzzer game that I had to videotape for my work and it ended up being just so much fun where every other bar was so unbelievably packed that you could barely walk, low down lounge was so chill and such a vibe we took a table. Here's the Down Low on the Low Down. This lounge is not actually "low down." It's actually up high. You've got to climb one of the staircases to get up here to this bar that's perched above the street level. My gripe is that, as far as I can tell, there's no accessible way in for a wheelchair. There's only lots of stairs. Inside, you'll often find cool bands playing out on the back patio, or a DJ spinning on the inside. The place is a chill vibe with a Phil Collins drink special. (Insert drum solo here). The staff was attentive and kept the drinks flowing. The place is clean, and it's nice to be able to literally look down upon the barflies outside of Hotel Vegas. As far as I can tell, this bar doesn't have any air conditioning to speak of. It's hot. But, the beers are cold. The back patio that's covered will give a breeze. read more

You know, I used to live a block from this bar when it was called something else. I've been here since it's been Low Down Lounge and didn't think much of it. Not to slight the place, but there's so many bars in this town I never had a compelling reason to return. Anyway, my friend invited me here so I went. The good: the staff rules. Very friendly service, and the vibe when we went was better than I remember it being previously. Unfortunately, I did not like my drink. I asked if they had anything hot as it was cold out that night and they said yes they have Hot Toddy. It was tepid at best. The staff was so nice I didn't say anything, but I should have. I haven't been to this bar since it was under the previous management. Unfortunately, that visit was the last stop on a bar crawl for my birthday way back in college, so I can't remember the place well enough to compare. Like my previous time on the premises, I spent way more on drinks than I planned to, but justified my purchases because of the special occasion. This time, the occasion was SXSW, and I feel the venue is optimized for small shows year-round with the well-connected indoor and outdoor segments. The 1970s theming under the new ownership feels very au courant, and I wonder how it will age. We happened upon this bar by chance and had a great time. There is a parking lot across the street, as well as a ton of street parking available. They had signs for their pickle backs so we had to do Jameson shots with pickle backs and they did not disappoint! They also had multiple Austin beers in cans and bottles! There were so many tables inside and outside, with heaters outside as well! The only bummer was that the bathroom was basically flooded. The floor was soaked and smelled quite bad. read more

I can't say enough good things about this place but what makes it a good place to hang is the people. The drinks are cheap and the pool table is only $1. This is honestly my favorite place to play pool cause I get to meet people from all walks of life and just about everyone is really cool. Some of the college girls that come to watch their dudes play are a bit immature at times but other than that, this is a great place. They play a variety of music that get's everyone singing out loud at times and sometimes there is a DJ. The bathrooms are kind of gross but if you have to go, you have to go. I stopped in the speedy looking bar the other night and it felt just like home. It's the kind of place that you swear that you have been in a hundred times or more... I sat right down at the bar and ordered a fine, local fizzy water that was nice and cool and crisp. Random groups of people started arriving and everyone immediately clicked, and it was a pleasure to be there and experience the synchronicity... it felt like were all a part of something bigger... with a greater purpose than just drinking, one of reflection and appreciation, and a general celebration of life. Maybe it was the inspiring tone of Balboa on the screen as he watched his best friend die, and you could see the resolve in his eyes and how determined he was to make it right. I left the bar and it felt good to have been there, with those people during that time. It was the right place to be, and it will be the right place to be again, the next time I am near there and am thirsty for more than liquid refreshment.
