What a lovely spot on 4th! This whiskey bar has some very strong drinks! My friend ordered an espresso martini which he said was pretty good. I had the Lavender Bee which was perfection! I usually just need one to start out or finish off the night. Service was very friendly on a Friday night and the place was very crowded. Such a great vibe! I love that the Friday happy hour goes until 7pm! It's the perfect way to start the weekend. The pictures gave off a speakeasy like feel without having to have a passcode or reservation so I was here for it. Needless to say it did not disappoint. Walking down the stairs to the basement area where this low key but cute bar exists was a pleasant surprise. As I mentioned there is a speakeasy vibe to the place, making it great for a date, or low key night with friends. Music plays in the background and vintage couches for you to grab a seat if you can. That is the only downside is that there isn't a lot of seating, so the chances you may have to stand around are pretty high depending on when you go. The drink that I love is the Lavender Bee! Try it, it's delicious! Had it both times I went recently. Also the bar tenders are great, I tried something different and wasn't fan, they were willing to switch it out, no questions asked. Who would've ever thought to see an underground whiskey bar right in the heard of the LGBTQIA+ neighborhood. I've been to Halcyon a few times throughout the years and loved how there was a queer friendly space that was welcoming to all. So getting to combine my love of whiskey and as a queer person myself, this felt like heaven. Down Low Bar has a wide ensemble of different folks hanging out which I loved. Always a fan of a diverse scene and not something that looks so cookie cutter. Now the whiskey selection was stupid impressive. Staff was super nice and very friendly. Wasn't the biggest fan of my mint julep but I also live in New Orleans and have very peculiar taste. I can't take away this spot being in my rotation as I visit Austin. This place is downstairs of what used to be Fado's. In the 19th century it used to be a brothel. The decor is nice and I love the whiskey barrels they have on display. It is very cozy inside. I'm in love. Now let me preface by saying that when I visit a city I normally don't go to the same restaurant or bar twice because I want to try as many places as possible. And guess what? I came here every day during my Austin trip because it just felt right. And I usually don't stay at a bar for more than an hour or so but I stayed here for more than two hours all three times I came here. Lastly, I rarely order more than two drinks at any bar but I was ordering at least 4/5 every day. This place has broken all the rules that I set for myself and I'm 100% okay with that. I came here during their happy hour (Monday through Friday 4-7pm and all day Sunday 6pm-2am) and I was already impressed with the cheap happy hour prices and one of the best old fashioneds ($7) that I've had in a while. I really couldn't taste that it was strong at all. The whiskey sour ($5!) was super good as well. I got to talking with Nathan (who seems to be the manager) and Chris (the bartender) and they just made me feel like I was at home. They have an infused liquor base every night that they use to make a large variety of drinks. I got to try some of their infused drinks as well as future drinks they had in the works. I remember trying a Halloween drink that Nathan made that basically tasted like peanut butter. They mentioned they were hosting a tequila tasting the next day and said that I should come back tomorrow to check it out and you can bet that I did. On the second day Nathan was there but instead my bartender was Stephanie. And to no one's surprise she was super friendly as well and I had great conversations with all of them. Stephanie made me a custom drink that included Kooper family rye, vanilla bean simple syrup, and Aztec chocolate bitters that smelled and tasted like peanut butter as well. They say everything is bigger in Texas and that includes the hospitality. On the third day I came back and Nathan saw me and said, "Look who's back!" It turns out after I left the second night Stephanie and Nathan talked about how they bet that I was gonna come back the next day. Stephanie was working as well and she made me the same custom drink she made me the previous day. I just remember sitting there and thinking, "I need to move to Austin" and that night I was looking at jobs in the area. The reason why I spend so much time doing researching and finding bars is because I might just end up running into a place like Dumont's Down Low. I grew such an attachment to this bar that I really didn't want to leave. And I knew that at a certain point I had to leave and I was cherishing the time that I had because I didn't know when I would ever come back or have the same experience that I had for a couple days here. I could really go on and on about this bar because there are just so many great things about it.
