This bar was part of our Christmas Bar crawl for 2025; This was the last stop before crossing into Downtown and it's located on the western edge of the East 6th street entertainment district. It was busy on a Saturday night a couple of weekends before Christmas but the line to get in moved pretty fast. The set up is great as the bar to order drinks is very visible and everyone seems to stand in organized lines to order. Since i was drinking painkillers for most of the evening, I proceeded with their version which was pretty good. What's really cool is their outdoor area which is kind cool and built off of a hill so it's raised and there are steps to take you up to the outdoor seating area which has lots of picnic tables that can seat large group. Our group had about 10 people so we all were able to sit down. There were also a couple of food trucks to order from. read more

Speakeasy is 9/10 it's very cool! Atmosphere is very chill. Drinks are a little pricey, but very, very good. The lighting is nice a little dark, the service; you gotta walk up to the bar to order but grade A service. read more

By far the rudest establishment I have ever been to. My friends and I came on New Year's Eve and mind you it was not that busy in there for a holiday. First, I ordered a Mexican mule and saw the bartender using vodka instead of tequila when I tried to correct her she accused me of already having my drink and to give it back for her to fix. She argued for several minutes. When I told her I had not received it and that it was behind the bar with her she said "oh fine whatever". Then my friend ordered a spiked hot chocolate when we go to sit down we notice it was incredibly light and when she sipped it found out it was a Hot Toddy. When I went in to let the bartender know she YELLED at me and said "well we are out of hot chocolate so what?" When I was never told they were out. She then asked what I wanted instead and charged me for a new drink. So I go charged for two drinks when one was made incorrectly and was not going to be drank. They need to hire bartenders that actually listen and not make excuses for their bad service. They barely had people in there for them to make it seem like they were SO SLAMMED. Instead of apologizing and taking the blame they just blame the customer. Horrible service, horrible place. Really put a damper on my holiday plans while visiting the city. The employees made us feel so uncomfortable and unwelcome that we left. Also it was after midnight so the hype had died down. 0/10 never again. read more

When I think of the word, "Shangri-La", I picture somewhere exotic with large palm trees and mystery. However, the actual bar on East Sixth known as Shangri-La leans more on divey than luxury. With a decent-sized patio and no-frills vibes, it's a casual spot for basic drinks. Both the interior and exterior are pretty bare-bones, with the inside offering pool, and the outside offering food trucks-- it's minimal. read more

This spot was recommended by a local friend so Nate and I stopped in while in town recently. The bar is divey with a large outdoor space and food truck. They had some cocktails and drinks listed so I went with an Aperol spritz, which was good. There were people playing pool inside and it was pretty early still so it wasn't too packed. The restroom is a one stall situation inside and there was a scary dark bathroom off the patio that I didn't want to brave. Nate said it was pitch black in there. The drinks were just fine and the atmosphere was divey. It's not a place I'd necessarily need to visit again, but I'm glad we checked it out. The retro sign outside was really cool! There's also a hidden speakeasy off the patio area - look for a green light and a door with a buzzer to access it. read more

I was going back and forth between 3 and 4 stars, but I went with 4 because the service and ambiance were pretty great! Yeah, this is a bit of a dive bar, but it still remains pretty clean and the drinks aren't particularly expensive. My only problem was my Paloma was atrocious. Really bad. Maybe it was a bad night. I got a beer next which was much better! Like I mentioned, the service was pretty good and they have a nice outdoor patio with a food truck. This part of 6th can be a little dicey, but Shangri-La fit the bill for having character, but still "safe". read more

While patronizing the stellar Fukumoto across Sixth Street from Shangri-La, I have often wondering what this bar had to offer. After taking an out-of-town friend for a great Japanese meal, we wandered over to Shangri-La to check it out. What a great little divey bar! Loaded with plenty of kitsch decor worthy of "Austin weird," it has a little something for everyone. Want to plant yourself at the bar and down some cocktails? Play some pool? Enjoy some great food truck meals while you drink? All of that is available here and more. I felt immediately at home walking in, and I appreciated the excellent HVAC system keeping things cool while it was a bit warm outside. I was also surprised by the size of the patio-it is humongous and not what you'd expect by the very compact frontage on Sixth. Hopefully Shangri-La and other places like it in Austin survive the current explosion of gentrification and the urge to bulldoze every bit of character out of downtown to be replaced by nameless, faceless, soulless apartment blocks and chain restaurants. I'll be coming back as long as they're here though. Highly recommended. read more

For a street that isn't short of bars, you gotta have something different to stand out. I liked the vibe at Shanti-la with a few different things you can do depending on your mood. There's a bar with drinks and pool table, there's a cute outdoor area with flower decor and a vast patio with a food trucks. There's a small speakeasy too, at the back end. It can get crowded on the weekends but worth a visit on your next outing to East 6th. read more

This used to be a favorite of mine. Unfortunately, tonight, it became a least favorite. On a Wednesday night of all nights, my friends and I were the absolute life of the party. We turned an empty and ominous bar into a fun easy going place. We were singing, dancing, and having a blast. The staff for some reason decided that they'd rather have no fun at all, and wanted to turn us away. Every patron in the bar was singing along with us, as we paid for songs to be played on the jukebox. We were treated EXTREMELY disrespectfully- even though everyone else in the bar was having a great time alongside our group. I would not recommend this place at all. Though we came for a bit of fun, it turned into absolute disgust by the way we were treated. I have never experienced this anywhere and I am definitely not one to leave a review unless it is called for. Also, the bathrooms are absolutely disgraceful. There is a reason this place is always empty. Please do not waste your time or money. You deserve better! read more

Thinking of making this spot my fiance and I frequent, if we can get past the bartender who likes to play mind games. The $4 happy hour well drinks (which end at 6pm) and $10 for 3 Nashville Fried Chicken Sliders (which are the size of McDonald's burgers EACH), make this a great spot 5pm to 6pm while the happy hour deals are on! I asked the bartender for tequila and lime juice, and he looked confused when repeating "lime juice??!!!" back to me. Does a bartender really not know what lime juice is? After he got over himself enough to make the drink, he asked if I wanted a tequila cranberry as a second drink. Barely able to hear, I said "Yes, thank you. Oh no, wait. I just want the drink I asked for. No additions please." He raised his hands in the air as if beside himself. I don't care what his problem was, but I wonder why we even tipped. This place is a great Austin dive bar with pool and a food truck in the back. The food truck consists of mostly bar food (frito pie, hot dogs, etc.). I thought the drinks were fine, but not amazing. Great prices, however. We had the Bees Knees and pina colada. Both okay. read more

it was quite honestly shameful, the service my friends and I endured this evening. TL;DR we were escorted for singing. Yes, Singing! woke nonsense. My good friend (who cannot be named for legal reasons) instructed the crowd to sing a rendition of "Live Forever" by Oasis. a request that was dutifully accepted. From the outset, question marks were raised by the bar staff who had very unpolitely asked us to "be quiet". Please understand that at this time, we were offering this bar 50% of its take for this evening. I must confess, I was a little disturbed when a man the size of the pint I was slipping pranced toward our party and asked to put a stop to our concert. When we politely ignored this request, Peanut's drink was snatched from him. Most discourteous I must say. This bar will average a 30% capacity on a Saturday. Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon. Great bartender. The food truck literally was just opening up (around 330-4pm) and had beef or chicken sliders, hot dogs, chicken nuggets--looks like descent bar food in others' pics. Drinks were surprisingly cheap and unsurprisingly great as I had this place recommended to me for such. Good A/C inside and a cute photo booth and pool table were around--lots of room outside with some shady nooks for hot days. I would make this place a regular haunt if I wasn't always trying new places, but even so, I'll go out of my way to return every month to at least kill 30 min. with a drink. 5 stars. read more

However, a bartender comes up to me and says, "We are getting busy, we need you to leave the bar." I am buying your drinks AND leaving 20% tips, why am I being treated like a second class citizen? Depeche Mode playing when we walked in, so that's a good start. It seems like the music is either a juke box or controlled by the staff, rather than a DJ, at least while we were there. A few different tables of people playing cards & board games. They have several old school arcade video games, pool table, & outdoor patio area. Cool little local bar on East 6th. Came here with a large group of friends after eating Sushi at Fukumoto across the street. Btw(Best Sushi in ATX) It's definitely has a "dive bar"feel inside! But has a huge outside patio area with large tables to hang out with friends. They also have a Cajun food truck outside patio area. (We didn't try) but heard it's very good! The outdoor seating was very spacious, but it was a bit chilly and of course all of the heaters were out of propane. My favorite small bar off E. 6th street! They have HH daily (typically 2pm-6pm), so this is a great spot to start out at. HH includes $2 wells & $2 domestic brews. Music is always great and bartenders work hard to make you feel welcomed! The indoor space has plenty of seating, photo booth, and two pool tables. Outdoor space includes the food truck "Tender Thighs" and plenty of seating. Dog friendly of course and overall a great spot to meet up with friends for nice conversation after work or early post-brunch. read more
