Such a fun vibe-- note that the cocktail menu can be described with the following hashtags: #triggerwarning, #toosoon- but if you're comfortable watching Comedy Central or have an appreciation for the darker side you'll get along quite well. They have a DJ, and restrooms in the back through a beaded curtain. When we went it was around Halloween so the decor was quite ghoulish but the music was as lively as could be, so it didn't quite match but it worked. I didn't want to leave! First things first - you need to know the code to get in. The code changes monthly. If you don't know someone on the list who has the code, ask around to try to track it down! The space is fairly small and intimate, so if you want a table or seating, I recommend getting there early-ish. If you get there during peak hours, you'll still likely be seated, you just may have to wait in a line outside. They have a few tables inside that can seat 4-8 (depending which one) comfortably. The bar has seats that are swings hanging from the ceiling which are quite cool. The cocktails are great and each come with an entertaining name. From the moment you walk in, it feels like you've stepped into an alternate universe--equal parts edgy, intimate, and electric. The Rum Springa was smooth and complex with the perfect tropical twist, while the Casey Anthony somehow balanced wild creativity with straight-up deliciousness (dark, yes--but undeniably tasty). The Racketeer was bold and refined, like a drink with a secret. Each cocktail felt like it had a full personality. Special shoutout to Shalay, the bartender who made the experience next-level. She was warm, skilled, and effortlessly cool--exactly the kind of energy you want behind the bar. Her recommendations were spot on, and she had the crowd engaged without missing a beat. I was in town for a conference and rolled in just after 4. Did not know about their happy hour, but was super pleasantly surprised by it. It was busy, but not packed when I arrived. It's a really small space, but I think that just adds to the ambiance. I had three very delicious cocktails before heading off to various other adventures. I've been trying to get into this Austin speakeasy for months, and I finally found a way! Getting the code was an adventure, so I won't ruin it for you, and it was worth it. Don't forget your ID, because everyone needs it to get in, even if you're over 40! The decor is weird-fun and the drink names are hilarious. The music was great and the service was impressive for such a busy bar! Their twist on an old fashioned was pretty good as was their version of an espresso martini. There's not a ton of seating so you'll make new friends. If you're bringing a group, then you'll either need to get there early or be ready to wait to pounce when a group vacates. Floppy Disk Co. is not what I think of when I think about a speakeasy and it's very different to the ones I've visited. The drinks are pretty good and they have a solid music selection. It's a fun place to go for a few drinks before dinner or before a show. There's one bartender that is pretty rude, but everyone else is a sweetheart. All I wanted to do was get my floppy disk fixed! We arrived early, the code didn't work, even after opening the code still didn't work:(. Luckily a call to the manufacturer got us into the lavish waiting room of Floppy Disk Repair! Classy and unique are two words that only begin to describe this awesome little speakeasy. It's a bit small, but it is very comfortable and easy to hold a conversation. The movie of the evening combined with the horror themed decor, red lighting and flamboyant tribute to the Texas chainsaw massacre really makes this bar unique. They prepare their drinks at a pace of their own, but they don't miss a beat, so rest assured everything they deliver is quality. THE BIG: Small speakeasy bar. In order to get in you need to obtain the code (changes monthly)! THE BLACK AND WHITE: I didn't know this place even existed until my fiance's friend told us to come on a Wednesday night. He knew the code and we got in. The interior is very cool and entering the speakeasy, you go through these heavy metal curtains. Inside you see some taxidermy of an antelope along with other crazy art pieces. My friends and I have been dying to check out this speakeasy you have to get the code for. They did not disappoint!!! We came here to end the evening of celebrating my husband's 24th birthday, and the staff here made our experience so memorable! The menu has hilarious names for their cocktails, and our group of 6 decided to order the f*ck one, kill one, marry one group cocktail and it was amazing! It came out in a giant golden swan, and we were given copper mugs for our beverages. My husband also ordered the captain crunch cocktail they had, and he was obsessed! The vibe in here is amazing, and I adore the red lighting. It made for some fabulous photos. They had the decor decked out for Halloween, which I was obsessed with! Their playlist was killer, and our group could not stop dancing in our seats! I even asked a staff member how they curate the playlist, and they explained they either have DJs or connect to a special DJ playlist one of their staff member's discovered for the bar. Being a large group, we also greatly appreciated the servers making sure to accommodate us. When we couldn't fit in a booth meant for a maximum of 5 people, a server walked up to ask if we would prefer the booth across from us that could seat us but was being used by a party of 3. We politely turned it down but thanked the server because the group of 3 was there before us after all. The server went out of his way to politely ask if the group would be willing to switch, and they were more than happy to oblige. Overcrowded, expensive, and not nearly as interesting as it needs to be, given the tacky password requirement. We got the password from one of the bouncers at the Firehouse Lounge, which we thought was a much better speakeasy. Drinks go about $20-$25, which is Manhattan-level pricing, but without the quality or care to match. They all have very Instagram-friendly names, which I assume is the entire goal of this place. Personally I found the code a little too easy to get. I'd personally recommend they change it more often or adopt the same reservation system as other speakeasies. We went at 8:30 and by 9, the bar was overcrowded with people standing in the walkway and a line outdoors. It's not secret anymore with lines. The music was loud, even worse when the DJ came. I couldn't even conversate with friends or order drinks with the servers and personally if I wanted loud club music, I would've gone across the street. The drinks were okay. Nothing amazing worth the $18 price tag but not horrible either. I did want to give some credit to the server. I don't remember her name but she was amazing at recommending drinks based off our tastes. Service lacked as they got busier which is why I wished they limit the people inside more. read more

It is one of the speakeasy bars in Austin, and it is undoubtedly unique. They have been trying to replicate the atmosphere and ambiance of the New York City-style speakeasy bars, and they have done an excellent job. My friends and I were visiting Austin from NYC and found this bar. We had to get the "secret code" first from the other bars in the area, which was a fun experience! But when we finally got in, clearly we got the "special treatment" from the start, and it continued: -They had tables that were not reserved, and they sat us practically in the least desirable chairs by the door. We went with it since we were there to have a good time and try their cocktails. -A bit after we ordered our cocktails, they took our drink menu away, despite them visibly having multiple drink menus available, also menus available on the tables, where other clients could use them to order cocktails. We didn't make much out of it since we were there to have a good time! -The place charges ~$20+ for each cocktail (which were excellent and unique cocktails!). One of the bartenders asked us for our credit card to run it in the system in such a setup! In all my years going out in speakeasies and trendy bars in NYC, I have never been asked, nor is it the proper etiquette to ask in such establishments, for a credit card halfway through your first cocktail! It is a small bar, giving the clients a unique experience, and it is nothing like a sports bar or a large dive bar (where I can understand that sometimes "some people" could order a drink or two and then decide to dash out without paying!!!). We were dressed up for a night out, and we were also not giving the vibe that we could not afford to have a drink at such an establishment. (We were on a fun trip, so we were ready to spend, and also, the crafty cocktails are priced cheaper relative to NYC, which is where we live and go out.) To make the matter worse, when we asked for our bill, the second bartender( the nicer and cooler guy!) gave us the bill, and when I mentioned that the first bartender opened a tab for us a while ago he was totally surprised! Clearly not the way they treat other clients sitting at the bar or tables. The second bartender was really cool and good sport throughout and made amazing cocktails! The second bartender's reaction made it clear to us that we got "special treatment" from the first guy. I am guessing that probably the behavior of the first guy in treating us differently could be caused by the hidden biases he has against specific ethnicity and race, I hope I am wrong. Hopefully, he will get some sensitivity training and take the service and etiquette at this speakeasy to the next level. The place has great potential, and indeed we will revisit them next time in Austin, and we hope to get better treatment and a top-notch experience next time! read more

I used to come here all the time but it had been a while. I was aware of the "code" situation but not aware of how much the rules had changed. I visited a few days ago--on a freakin' Wednesday, of all things--and they were horribly rude to my entire party. I was with friends who flew in from across the country to visit and guaranteed them that they'd love Floppy Disk. Not only were the employees rude about the code, the woman basically cornered us and pushed us out the door. Disgusting behavior. Especially for a bar, in Austin, on a Wednesday. I've been treated better at high-end bars in bigger cities who were less snooty than the employees at this place. We were asking people who were walking out, for the code to get in and everyone looked confused trying to remember but they were helping anyway. Some lady told me that if they didn't let us in, to tell them we know someone named Rich. Idk who Rich is, but we didn't even have a moment to say his name before we were kicked out. If you can crack the code, this place is SO worth it. Definitely exceeded my expectations! It's everything I love about a bar; the interior aesthetic is amazing, I love the red lighting, the swings and the candles at every table. The staff were super nice and made us feel comfortable and I got a good kick out of the drink names. I ended up getting the Freshman Experimentation, which was a heavenly hibiscus cocktail with vodka. For sure just needed one of those! Something you should know before going: when you open a tab, a $50 authorization will be put on your card until you close out but that wasn't a problem, nor did it take away from the experience. Okay - let me say this RIGHT up front. This is one crazy place. And I love it. This place is singlehandedly keeping Austin weird. I mean, If no one else was involved - these people could pull it off all by themselves. Maybe it's the keypad with a secret code to get in. I had been told about it by a local Uber driver. But I didn't have the code. And I came anyway. Fortunately a couple was punching in the numbers as I walked up so I grabbed the door behind them before it closed and - Voila! - I was in! As I walked in, to my right was a row of "lamps up high on the wall - with plastic doll heads serving as the "lampshades". It was eerie and bizarre. Maybe that was it. Or perhaps it was the moose on the wall with a knitted scarf, or maybe it was the neon sign that read "Mmmmm .... your hair smells good". How random is that? Or maybe it was the actual real-life chainsaw hanging inside a picture frame. Or the Buried axe door handle in the bathroom. Or maybe it was the dark humor enshrined within the wickedly brilliant drink names: "Nobody Actually Liked Miranda" or "Life in San Antonio" or "And a Banana Cognac, B****" - and others that pushed the envelope even further. I have seldom had so much enjoyment reading a menu. Perhaps it was Rochelle who was just BRILLIANT - a master at her craft at the bar, and just plain gifted at establishing rapport with people. The bottom line is this: There were a lot of moving parts to this place and they all came together at this one junction - providing a fascinating one of a kind concept. These people aren't serving drinks - they are delivering an EXPERIENCE that you WILL not and CANNOT get anywhere else. Here's how great this is: If you don't come here, you can't say you've been to Austin. Officially. This is Austin at its finest weirdness. I would mention the drinks except I don't know how. After the identifiable first drink (Boulevardier) Rochelle went behind the wizards curtain and started cranking out unique cocktails. It was like watching a mad scientist at work (except she wasn't mad, just irritated - " - and the cocktails whatever they were. were unique and delicious. I can't believe this place is still here. I stumbled upon it with some friends probably not long after it first opened in 2016. We had been headed to the bar that was next to it at the time, and upon seeing that the other place was more of a clubby scene than we were looking for, we walked away as I muttered something about wishing we could just find a cool speakeasy. As I said this, we were passing by some dude lurking outside an unmarked door, who interjected, "This place is a speakeasy." We all stopped dead in our tracks as I said, "What??" I mean, that has to be one of the weirdest things that has ever happened to me. Would YOU believe a random guy on the street who just happens to hear that you're looking for a speakeasy and suddenly claims to be standing in front of one? Ha, we were definitely skeptical...but intrigued, especially as we studied the sign and had to concede his point that yeah, a floppy disk repair company in 2016 sounded a little...fake. Still, we remained skeptical at the idea of being struck by speakeasy lightning, so he gave us the code in order to prove it. Well, I'll be damned. It WAS a speakeasy. Flash forward to June 2021...damn, this place hasn't changed a bit, and I love it. Getting access seems to be harder now, but I kinda love that and am not going to give away any secrets here. There are so many "speakeasys" with too much emphasis on the "easy." You gotta really want this one -- and they've got to like the idea of hanging out with you. There's more to this place than the setup, though. Their cocktail game is strong. After studying the menu, I asked the bartender what he thought of the drink called "Do The Jane Fondle." He said it was his favorite drink on the menu. Well, damn, gimme one of those, then. I love egg white drinks but had never had a drink with a full raw egg before. Don't let that spook you...it's REALLY worth trying. This drink is house-infused peach Buffalo Trace bourbon, lemon, honey, whole egg, and habanero tincture. So, yep, it's like a whiskey sour on steroids. The whiskey sour aspect is smooth and slightly fruity with the peach infusion, creamier than your average whiskey sour with egg white. Then it ends with a surprise hit of spice in the back of your throat (that's the habanero) that literally made me say "wow" out loud. It was delicious with a surprise kick of heat at the end. I loved it. My boyfriend had the Racketeer, which also is a really phenomenal drink and in fact was his favorite of our entire weekend in Austin. If creamy, smooth, slightly fruity, and slightly spicy (the Jane Fondle) doesn't sound like your cup of tea, then try the Racketeer, which is a fantastic blend of Old Overholt rye, mezcal, carpano antica, yellow chartreuse, Benedictine, and Peychaud's bitters -- all stirred and served up in a Laphroaig-rinsed glass. Good LORD it was good. Our favorite bar at home in Dallas is a speakeasy mezcalria (La Viuda Negra) where the bartender, Hugo, has a phenomenal Mezcal Old Fashioned on the menu. The one on the menu here has a very different list of ingredients, and the bartenders swore we'd like it better than Hugo's. I'm not sure I agree, but I'll say it was damn good and definitely worth trying, especially if you've never had a mezcal Old Fashioned before. So, yeah, don't let the kitchsy decor fool you -- these guys are putting out some really interesting, unique cocktails that will keep you coming back for more. I'm only 5% ashamed to say that we actually came back the next day and did another round of the exact same two drinks. The vibe is laid-back, chill, and fun. As we learned going two days in a row, some bartenders are more talkative and welcoming than others. If the bartender's vibe isn't your style when you first go, try again another day, and then find out what days the fun ones work, haha. Also, I recommend a weekday evening if you want the place pretty much to yourself -- makes for a better opportunity for getting the bartenders' takes on the menu. read more
