Pro tip: Happy Hour! From drinks to oysters, or the steak fries with martini $30 deal, make sure to get there before it ends at 5:30 PM. Like others, I did think the steak (despite being good) was not as good as the price. I thought the Caesar salad and oysters were enjoyable. The desserts, cheesecake and tiramisu, definitely gave NYC restaurant vibe and we're delicious. read more

VanHorn's - Happy Hour - Steakhouses Near Me - Austin, Texas

Van Horn's offers an incredible happy hour deal: $30 for steak frites and a martini. I've been twice now, and the martini has been the highlight both times. It was made exactly how I like it--dirty, shaken, and ice cold. The steak frites is also a great value, but the steak was noticeably too salty during my first visit. I initially assumed it was a one-off issue, but when I returned with friends, we all agreed that it was still overly salted. That's definitely something the kitchen should be more mindful of. Aside from the seasoning, the steak was cooked well. I still loved the martini every time, and I'd happily come back for that alone. read more

My partner and I chose Van Horn's in downtown Austin to celebrate our 5-year anniversary, and the staff really made us feel SO special. From the moment we arrived, the hostess & our server, Bella, made us feel incredibly special. She was warm, attentive, and genuinely helped make our anniversary celebration unforgettable. The food was subpar, and we felt the quality unfortunately did not match the price. Our favorite dishes were the whipped feta appetizer and the incredible steak sauces--they were packed with flavor and truly elevated the meal. Our NY Strip was cooked perfectly but lacked robust flavor for the $80+ price point. We had higher expectations on the 45 day age program. One of the most memorable touches was the personalized drinks featuring our photos printed on them. It was such a fun, unique surprise that made the evening feel even more special. To top it all off, the staff presented us with a handwritten anniversary postcard, which was such a thoughtful gesture and something we'll always remember. If you're looking for a restaurant in downtown Austin for a special occasion, we highly recommend Van Horn's. The exceptional service, NYC classic feel, and thoughtful personal touches made our anniversary one we'll never forget. Mac & cheese was watery and hard from being under broiler too long. read more

Girls birthday dinner at VanHorns was the right choice for our night of celebration! The service, ambiance, and food were all top notch. Very cute boutique vibe inside and nice patio with this lovely weather. Food was delicious. I'm typically a wedge salad purist however that bacon and the crunchy nuts were delicious!! Miso cod was a great choice as well, I'll definitely be going back for the steak frites during their HH. Dirty martini was also done right and you can't beat fresh stuffed blue cheese olives, worth the up charge! Our server Jesus was absolutely amazing - kind, attentive, and fun. He made our special night even more special and made us feel so seen! Hope to see Jesus again soon for another incredible experience. read more

Guys! This place! Great location!! Our host or waiter said this place opened almost a year ago. So glad I happened onto a social media post about it. We booked a spot for dinner same day. Fantastic vibe, service was incredible. The food was fantastic. We order so much food! And made sure to get a couple dishes to go. Get the oysters!! And the cheesecake! I guess it's flown in from Brooklyn? Excited to go back and try more of the menu. read more

I had the best server, her name was Lumi. She was everything I ever want when I'm dining out. 5 stars across the board. I am only giving the restaurant 3 stars overall because they did not have fans or anything outside. I was visiting Austin and it is so hot. Thats the least they can have. If they are worried about it looking "tacky" because it's a black tie restaurant, then they need to work with a designer and make it look good. I only had the oysters rockefeller, because I really only went for the drinks. The oysters, which were just okay, which is another reason I am only giving it a 3. However, Lumi made my time great. Oh and all you tasted from the bread was burnt. read more

The burger was cooked to my liking and the staff was prompt with service. Came on a Saturday and sat at the bar, everything was simple with ordering. I was not y impressed with the meal since it did not come with fries just a cheeseburger (American cheese) I asked if I could switch to cheddar but was not able to. I ordered a side of Mac and cheese which was not very cheddar or sharp cheese tasting more like the typical boxed cheese style so nothing worth ordering again. read more

I recently visited Van Horn's in Austin and overall had a great experience. We started with champagne, which was a nice touch, and the food was excellent. I ordered the grilled chicken with mac and cheese, and the portions were very generous. Everything was flavorful, well-prepared, and satisfying. The ambiance was also really nice. The space is small but charming, with a welcoming atmosphere that made the dining experience enjoyable. The only reason I'm giving 3 stars instead of 5 is because it was unbearably hot inside during our visit. It seemed like the AC unit may have been broken or not working properly, which made it difficult to fully enjoy the meal. That said, the food and service were strong enough that I would definitely come back and give it another try. Hopefully the air conditioning issue has been resolved by then. read more

10/10 pancakes. I 1000% would recommend them. They are big, fluffy, and cooked to perfection. I know it's a steakhouse, but I would recommend giving their brunch a try. I enjoyed my breakfast platter as well. The hashbrown was the best component. Very tasty and crispy. The eggs were cooked very well. The fruit was very fresh and sweet, and the assortment was great. read more

Another AMAZING brunch spot in Austin! I will literally visit every time I'm in town. Everything was top tier, from the service to the food, drinks and atmosphere. I don't have any complaints. I had the espresso martini and it was chefs kiss!! My sister and cousin had a pink cocktail that they did not really enjoy. I ordered the pancake with a side of bacon. The pancake was soft, fluffy, and not too sweet. It was yummy but really big. Definitely a shareable item. The oysters were really delicious but full of spinach so be aware of that. I'm not complaining though . We tried the wedge salad that was to LIVE FOR! My mouth is watering just thinking about it now! I can't wait to return. The staff really made my Birthday so special read more

Finally made it to Van Horn's after anticipating it for a long time. While the food and drinks definitely hit the mark, the atmosphere on a Friday night was a bit overwhelming. The space was packed tightly, with very little room between tables. It's a lively scene, but it left us wishing we'd picked a more intimate spot for our anniversary. Flavor-wise, the kitchen knows what they're doing. The 20oz steak paired with chimichurri and macaroni was a standout, and the martinis were perfectly mixed. The only miss was the asparagus, which was too thick and tough. I think we just caught them at their craziest hour, so we're looking forward to returning for brunch or happy hour for a more relaxed experience! read more

We came to Van Horn's tonight for a belated Valentines dinner. Our reservation was cancelled because of rain in February- they do not have any coverings on their patio. It was also our anniversary and I appreciated the acknowledgement right away with some champagne. Nice touch. We ordered an old fashioned and a dirty kettle martini with bleu cheese olives. We started with the whipped ricotta- stunning. Amazing. No notes. Appreciated the extra bread with no upcharge. 10/10. For our meal- we went crazy and ordered the porterhouse for two, Mac and cheese, German potatoes, and the heirloom tomato and onion salad. Steak- 8/10. Cooked to perfection served in bubbling butter. Could have been slightly more tender and seasoned and presentation was not great. Mac and cheese- 9/10. I loved the shape of the pasta. Ours was perfectly baked and crusty but still cheesy and not dry on the inside. German potatoes- 6/10. They looked really burned on the outside and maybe that's normal but they were just shredded potatoes with a ton of sour cream. I mean, potatoes are great in general but wouldn't order again. Heirloom tomatoe salad- 4/10. The tomatoes were delicious and seasoned and the steak sauce wa oddly great with it. but the raw onions were so thick it was almost inedible bc no seasoning could penetrate that. For dessert we got the cheesecake- and I ascended. Will come back everyday for that cheesecake and homemade whipped cream. Best thing of the night. 100/10. Over the good: I thought the price for portions was pretty fair which I rarely say. Those sides were definitely bigger than other steakhouses around. Easily shareable with 3-4 people if you order a few. I also thought our server was lovely, knowledgeable and everyone was very attentive. They didn't rush you, and my water glass never got below half full. We didn't have to wait around for the check and dirty dishes were promptly removed. Oh and did I mention the cheesecake? The not so good: other reviews have mentioned this but the timing was way off. We were done with our appetizer before our first drinks came out. Our steak came a solid 5-8 mins before the sides. Even our server did acknowledge drinks were running very behind. And then unfortunately whoever designed the tables didn't anticipate big backs like us coming in because our table was not big enough for what we ordered. The porterhouse platter was massive and the servers struggled to get our sides on the table. Half my dinner plate was sticking off and I had to to be really careful it didn't flip. And my dirty martini was definitely NOT dirty but it was still so crisp and good I'll let it slide. I did not however, appreciate the $5 up charge for kettle. The biggest issue was the acoustics- it was LOUD in there. We could barely hear one another. As a New England girl, I loved the New York vibes and the aesthetic went a long way to making the experience. Ultimately you come to a restaurant for good food and good service and we got that and they made us feel special, so we will be back! read more

Reservation for 6:45, arrived about five minutes early and the table was being cleared. They were very busy! Patio, bar and main dining room. I could totally get an NYC vibe based on the set up/decor which makes the inside feel older than it is. Was a tad on the loud side inside not a lot of softwears to dampen the sound. Wade took care of me and he was amazing! From his introduction and explaining the rationale behind their concept with an NYC vibe referencing Peter Lougers in NYC. (Haven't made it there yet). Wade was kind to recommend two wines and tried both. When the glass was delivered I tasted something was off and he replaced with the correct wine I ordered. Great service! Menu was a typical steakhouse but they did have a special for lent of arancini with scallops and shrimp I believe. Had a few other accompaniments that I can't recall. I ordered the Cesar salad and the ribeye with the creamy horse radish on the side. The Cesar salad was to die for, really it was the brioche croutons that are sautéed in the garlic butter from the shrimp scampi...then baked. OMG. Imma need them to sell those as a grab and go! Soooo delicious! Added on asparagus as I realized I needed some extra veggie and it was delicious too. Steak was cooked perfectly and they offered to cut the steak before arriving which I totally took them up on. All around great service and meal. I'll keep on the short list when I'm craving a good steak and salad combo. read more

Brunch after a group Pilates class just feels right, and VanHorn's made it feel even better. This place is so cute without trying too hard, and it immediately gave me "I could come here every weekend" energy. We went as a group, so of course we did it the right way and ordered a mix to share. We started with the whipped ricotta with truffled honey and hazelnuts, the monkey bread with that cinnamon brown sugar glaze, and their famous pancakes as a table dessert. Let me just say, I would happily eat all three of those by myself without hesitation. The pancakes are massive in the best way, and I'm actually glad we shared because they are no joke. For my entrée, I got the ham and gruyère crepe with a frisée salad and champagne vinaigrette, and it was the perfect balance to all the sweetness. Light, savory, and just elevated enough to feel like a real brunch, not just sugar overload. I also had a tequila sour which was the perfect finishing touch. Everyone was also so nice and attentive. This is absolutely a place I'd come back to, and next time I already know I need to try it for dinner too. read more

My experience at VanHorn's was absolutely phenomenal. I was welcomed by the hosts and when sat at the bar, the bartenders were very warm and welcoming. The interior was beautifully decorated and lush. I ordered the steak and eggs, a single pancake and a Hugo spritz. Everything was delicious but the star of the show was the chimichurri with my steak. Their spin on the recipe calls for anchovies and it was absolutely fantastic. The single pancake was enough for me to share with the gentleman seated next to me. If you are looking for a spot that hits every mark from the service to the final bite of dessert, Van Horn is it. We had an incredible spread, and I'm still thinking about that meal! The Stars of the Show: * New York Cheesecake: Hands down the best cheesecake I've ever had. Apparently, they ship these in straight from New York, and you can tell! It was incredibly decadent and paired perfectly with their fresh, house-made whipped cream. * Mac and Cheese: A total 10/10! It's true Southern style--rich, creamy, and packed with flavor. Do not skip this. The Mains: We also tried the Center Cut Steak and the Lamb Shank Shepherd's Pie. Both were hearty, delicious, and cooked to perfection. You can really feel the quality in every dish they put out. The Vibe: The service was lovely, attentive and welcoming, which really completed the whole experience. Whether you're a local or just passing through, this place is a must-visit. I'll definitely be back! read more

Fantastic experience for dinner crew last night. We got: -whipped ricotta (get the extra bread!! You'll need it) -Caesar salad (made with anchovy, but no visible fish pieces) -creamed spinach (interesting Gorgonzola topping, so warning if you have any picky friends) -Mac and cheese (just as incredible as I remembered from their sister company Teddy's restaurant) -tomahawk (enough for 4) -mushrooms (it may look disappointing when it shows up as it's an entree... but let me tell ya, this was great) Service was on point from both our main waiter and others. read more

All right I think this is my new favorite steakhouse. You definitely need to make a reservation because this place is always busy. It is very small inside but it is so cute. Definitely a date night or girls night or just because you wanna go have a good steak kind of night. The host is and the waiters were so nice. They knew what to recommend and did such a great job and making sure we were always doing fine. Definitely need to come back and try a lot more stuff because everything just looked delicious but we did start off with the tuna carpaccio, which was amazing. It did not even taste like fish. It was perfectly made. We also got the steak tart and that was so good. It was marinated so well, and it came with little sourdough breads, which were delicious. After that for our main course, we did get in the bone and ribeye. We got it medium, and they cooked it to perfection. We also got the whipped potatoes which were so good. We couldn't stop eating them and let me tell you those beer battered onion rings are a must. They are delicious. They had a great selection of cocktails. I had to try out the espresso martini cause there was so many talks of how good it was and it did not disappoint. It was not overly sweet or overly creamy. It was just perfect. Then I also got a pink lady drink with vodka instead of gin and it was so good as well. Definitely this place is a 10 out of 10 in my books and I will keep coming back. read more

First time trying this new steakhouse on 2nd. I was very excited for a steakhouse on the street I work! It has a very cosy feel to it and does feel straight out of NYC with the wood/red furniture. The cocktail program is perfect for a steakhouse and I really enjoyed my martini. We tried the house salad, NY strip, onion rings, and asparagus. The steak itself was a bit too fatty for my personal liking but we enjoyed it. The onion rings were delicious. I would definitely come back to try more on the menu! read more

Made reservations but got to the restaurant and they said I didn't have one. Waited for a table and missed brunch. Fortunately we were told we could still get the pancakes. Pancakes were great. We also got the espresso martinis with our pictures on it. Taste and presentation fantastic. Shrimp scampi was delicious. Salad was ok. Since we missed brunch we had the happy hour special with steak frites and a regular martini for like $35. Steaks were bland and not prepared as requested. Medium well steaks were very red inside. Sent it back twice and came back the same each time. No sear on steaks either. Round fries were also underwhelming. No flavor as well. Waiter and manager were very nice, and we might go back just for those shrimp but I wouldn't order the steak. read more

Visit at VanHorn's on a weekday and it was still packed, so was excited to see what the hype was about. Indoor and outdoor seating, and reservations can be made in advance. We were seated upon reservation time. Wanting to know it is loud inside. It was pretty hard to have a conversation without hearing others as well. The tables are seated very close together. The menu features steaks, raw bar options, multiple different side dishes, and a full back menu of drinks. The service itself was great. Our water was constantly being filled and we were constantly checked on. The steaks did take a little to come out just because they were packed. No fancy presentation, but the steaks were cooked perfection. The sides is where it's at, the mashed potatoes were very buttery. The showstopper was a New York cheesecake. My wife and I went to VanHorn's for our anniversary dinner. I cannot say enough great things about this restaurant. I loved the ambience. It has that fancy Manhattan steakhouse vibe, but is quiet enough to actually have a conversation with another person. We started out with drinks. My wife had an Aperol-based drink and I had a dirty martini. Our waitperson was so sweet. She checked on us several times. We had a Caesar salad as an appetizer. The salad was very good! They were doing a happy hour so I got the steak frites and fries. My wife had some sort of burger. Everything was ordered was amazing! In all honesty, I think VanHorn's could use some refinement. I did enjoy the atmosphere -- it's dark and moody and the ceiling and tapestry behind the bar were cool. Service was alright. While our waitress was really friendly, the timing of the kitchen was way off. Our appetizers arrived WAY before our drinks which I think is in such bad taste. When the drinks did arrive, the aperol spritz was really watery. The tartare was good but the bread it served with was definitely just pre sliced sandwich bread and it was weirdly floppy. I also thought it was weird that they have a happy hour but we didn't receive a printed menu of it? Not sure if that's typical or for some reason they just didn't have it that day. I think this place needs to get it together. read more

It was super cute and cozy inside. Very old world charming. Our server was very knowledgeable and friendly. She gave a great recommendation on the steak tartare. We split apps and salad and were very happy with it. The wedge was great, the dressing was not too heavy and nice and herby and the bacon was the star. I really wanted to love this place, unfortunately I probably won't return. The vibe is great - interior decor is stunning too. The service was okay - started out up (despite not being able to hear every other word) but by the end it was meh. We ordered the whipped ricotta, split a Caesar salad, the miso cod, and the filet (medium rare) with the German potatoes. To drink - whiskey sour and dirty kettle martini. Drinks - whiskey sour was okay. Dirty martini was okay. The drink itself good but not really "dirty" (Aris on west 6th does a great job of having levels to a dirty martini, and j carvers does the best "filthy" dirty) I got a second one and asked for it to be really dirty .. it was still the same but they gave me a side car of olive juice?? Still not great. But not the worst. Food - The whipped ricotta was a little thicker.Aba has the whipped feta and while not the same - the consistency is what I think of. This ricotta was thick. Caesar salad dressing was fantastic. Gem lettuce was cleans and crunchy. I think the croutons are home made & they were delicious. Miso cod - let down. The miso flavor was barely hitting. The plating was weird. Bok choy was the best thing on the plate. Filet - 8oz for 58 and it was good. Nothing to write home about. For $4 more you can get a FANTASTIC filet at two other steak places in downtown. It was different that the filet was plated on oil ... it didn't add any flavor or anything.. this could be a me issue. But I thought it was strange. The horseradish sauce was good and big portion. We skipped desert. I wanted to love the place but I don't see us returning - mediocre food at a $300+ tab. Save yourself and just go to J carvers or deans. read more

We left after our appetizer, that's how bad the experience was. Our waiter greeted us with "what's up" (that's how he introduced himself) and 2 sentences later called me "bro". I'm sorry, that might be acceptable at a dive bar but not a "high-end" steakhouse. J Carver's and Jeffrey's are in another universe service wise than VanHorn's. Our waiter continued to make us uncomfortable by telling us twice how "at my tables I like to do XYZ". I'm sorry, bro, I don't care what you like to do at "your" tables. Ordered two drinks. Our drinks were weak and mine was filled 1/3. Our salad was soggy! We had seen enough and left. read more
