I don't usually write reviews, but I had to for Jessica, the maître d' at J Carver's. I called on a Sunday night as a solo girl new to the city and asked her what the best night would be to come in if I wanted a fun vibe and maybe meet someone. Instead of rushing me off the phone, she spent a solid 10 minutes giving thoughtful, honest recommendations about the crowd and the energy of different nights. I trusted her, made a reservation for the night she suggested, and of course ended up running late. She still made it work effortlessly and made me feel so welcomed the second I walked in. It genuinely felt like one woman wanting another woman to have the best night in a new city. I ended up sitting at the oyster bar (highly recommend if you're solo, the people watching is elite), and Beau was my server. He was so sweet and attentive without hovering, and let me order as I went instead of rushing me into a full order upfront. That flexibility made the whole experience feel relaxed and natural, especially dining alone. Jessica is the definition of a girl's girl, and paired with Beau's service, the entire night just flowed. Everything was so delicious!! Steak was cooked and flavored perfectly without being too salty like other places. Paired well with other dishes like the potato gnocchi, which was a highlight for us. It was so creamy and rich, same as the sweet corn. The shrimp appetizer was also very good. Shrimp was crispy with that nice sweet and savory flavor. Crab cake was okay because I'm usually not a fan of them. The brussel sprouts were a bit too salty for my taste but they were crispy which I did enjoy. Bone marrow was good but a bit bland, although the garlic bread that came along with it was very good and aromatic. The banana bread dessert was decent. I thought it could've been more moist. I got scared for a moment. Although they do offer valet parking, the entrance did look a little sketchy. Upon entry we were greeted to intimate bar style restaurant that was then surrounded by strategically placed table seating. The mood was clearly intimate which explained the double blackout curtains at the entrance. Took the hostess longer than expected to find our reservation that we were 15 minutes early for and then our table. That might be my only complaint. Our waitress, Brittany, was bubbly friendly and super knowledgeable of the menu, the specials, and even house favorites. She guided us to some delicious fruity tropical drinks while we perused the menu. Decisions made we opted for a 10oz sirloin for two accompanied with potato gnocchi and fries. Appetizers were crab cake and sweet chile fried shrimp. The shrimp wasn't as spicy as I expected but they were season sooo well and were amazing. The crab cake was phenomenal!! The sirloin we asked for medium but it was more close to medium rare. But the cut, the season, the flavor, even at that temperature was exquisite. The gnocchi, something the Bean favors at any restaurant, was yummy. Fries with shoe string thin and crispy. From the decor, the top notch customer service from Ian and the general manager, the food and overall experience. Decor: the place is lit dimly and the style of the restaurant is very intimate and sexy. Also who has dental picks in the restroom? Huge plus for that! Customer service: Ian is an absolute professional! He gave us some great suggestions and was on top of it. The food came out quick. He is a great conversationalist and takes his job serious. Top notch Ian! He even walked us out and opened the door for us. We were met by the GM who asked about our experience. Top notch from beginning to end. Everything was amazing. Crispy shrimp were huge, well seasoned. Steak tartare was awesome and well spiced including great capers, the crab cake was fresh lump blue crab, plenty to share with 4 people. The Dover sole was amazing with brown butter, flaky, slightly flour dredged fish. Beets were large, seasoned with orange which hit well. The filet was perfect. The gnocchi was large format side, creamy, rich, delicious. Only hiccup was one of our groups filets came out medium instead of medium rare. Our waiter was top notch and a pro. This was overall my favorite meal in Austin! I dined here this past Friday evening. I ordered the 10 ounce filet carpet bag style with a side of beets and a side of fries. The 10 ounce filet came with a nice gravy bowl of dipping sauce. I dipped some of my steak and the fried oysters in it. The steak was heavenly. I feared it wouldn't be a big enough size. However, it was perfect! I savored every bite moaning while chewing each bite. They sat me at the bar area. It was a very comfortable chair and the patrons were pleasant. The interior of the place is upscale. Staff is very polite. The bartender who waited in me was dressed very professional and kind. She spoke in a clear and loud enough voice where I didn't need to ask her to repeat anything. The side of beets were another highlight of this meal. I savored each bite. They were prepared so well that I finished every bite and almost considered drinking the juice at the bottom of the bowl when finished. I would love to return here. Yummy! J Carver's ranks right up there for me with Jeffrey's and Dean's. I am a filet connoisseur and their 10oz center cut filet was fantastic. But I'm getting ahead of myself. The ambience was lovely for date night. I enjoyed the Fall cocktail that was a spiced pear whiskey sour. It was unique. But then I got the Godfather and oh my...I need another. Definitely recommend if you're a whiskey fan. The crispy country italian bread is a must... with the grana, garlic and herbs all nice and warm and toasty. Mmmm I need to make some at home. The Fuji apple salad was fresh. I liked the citrus vinaigrette on it. As mentioned previously, the filet was cooked to perfection and ranks high on the list of filets. I especially enjoyed the baked potato gnocchi though I wish it had more gnocchi. We asked the waiter his suggestion for dessert and he said the strawberry vacherin. We ordered the filet for two people since we did not want our own steak due to the fact that we've been stuffing our faces with BBQ ever since we got to Texas and it was the perfect amount for two people. We love a good steakhouse and always make a point to seek out the best one in town when we travel. J Carver's seemed like the top choice in Austin, so we were excited to try it while visiting for my husband's birthday and Valentine's weekend. Unfortunately, the experience ended up being underwhelming. We sat at the bar, and while the service was perfectly pleasant, it lacked the attentiveness you typically receive at a table. Considering the prices are the same, we probably wouldn't choose bar seating again. Food-wise, the Caesar salad was solid and the beef tartare was excellent. The crab cake, however, missed the mark. The crab itself was high quality, but it wasn't really a "cake" -- more of a loose pile of crab topped with sauce. We ordered the porterhouse, and this is where the experience dipped further. The presentation felt awkward and a bit tacky, which was surprising for a restaurant of this caliber. The steak itself was fine, but not particularly memorable or on par with other high-end steakhouses we've visited. Lastly, the wine pricing was difficult to overlook. As wine collectors who own several bottles from their cellar list, we were surprised to see what appeared to be at least a 100% markup across the board. I'm shocked I've not left a review on this place as much as I have been. For me this is the flagship steakhouse in Austin. Every time I've been including hosting a large group, it delivers. You're never arguing about the temperature, the bartenders know their cocktails; the sides are undeniably good. For example, I had the snap peas and mushrooms for the first time. Last night was our first time trying J Carvers. We had reservations for 5:45 which we arrived earlier for. The restaurant has a really nice layout and the decor gave me Gatsby vibes. The restaurant has a lovely golden hue to it. Very inviting. We ordered a bottle of wine, oysters, escargot, Caesar salad, the halibut, steak and lobster and finished it off with a chocolate cake. For the most part everything was great until a table by us started vaping. I kept getting whiffs of sweet candy flavored something during my meal when I realized what it was. ( I know a restaurant can't really control that.) The second thing I noticed was I was starting to get a stuffy nose towards the end of the dinner. I felt it was getting smoky inside. It was very subtle but enough for me to feel relief once we approached the front of the restaurant. We were seated at the back left in a booth. Just... impeccable. I don't get super excited about steakhouses as I feel like there's not a lot of variety. They tend to feel the same for me. But J. Carver's absolutely proved me wrong. We started with cocktails... perfect. Spiced pear margarita and 50 shades of pink for me. Various bourbon and whisky drinks for the men. They were happy. For apps, Hamachi Crudo, Sweet Chile Shrimp and THE ABSOLUTE BEST crab cake of my life. Caesar salad... incredible. For mains, two of us got the 10 oz filet and it was so good. The other two got it carpet bag style and they loved it. My dad, who grew up on east coast, said the fried oysters were the best he ever had. We got the creamed corn as a side. And the loaded baked potato gnocchi or whatever they were called were THE ABSOLUTE BEST. Lastly.... Dessert. Layer chocolate cake and bananas foster bread pudding. THE BREAD PUDDING WAS SO GOOD. One member of our party wanted their steak very well done and it took a couple of tries to get it right. Because of that our waiter gave us both of the desserts for free. We arrived a little later than our reservation time and were offered wine while waiting. The wait ended up being a bit longer than expected, but the wine kept coming, so we were happy. When we were taken to our table, we were greeted with a handwritten card with our names, a personal note, and a rose. I was genuinely blown away. I love thoughtful little touches like that, and it made the night feel extra special. Dinner and drinks were excellent, and the presentation was outstanding. We tried the bone marrow, which came highly recommended. It was our first time having it, and it completely set the bar high. The steaks were fabulous, juicy, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Once they seated us there was a birthday card signed by the staff. Everyone kept wishing the table Happy Birthday to us. I brought my fiancé here for our celebratory birthday date. I definitely made the right choice. The first thing you see when you walk in here off of the busy e6th is a black curtain. When they pull back this curtain it's as if you've entered the fanciest upscale whiskey lounge you can imagine. The type of place you may run into 007 at. When we sat down we were greeted with cards from the staff that were hand signed. A master bartender who helped us with drink suggestions as he was being personable. A rich food selection that was to die for. We tried the sturgeon caviar, raw oysters, carpet bag style steak, as well as one of the pasta dishes and some tasty sides. The service here is top notch! Hubby and I came to celebrate an anniversary and they were so sweet to welcome us with a rose and a card signed by the staff. It was a cute touch. I had a glass of red wine bc we knew we were going to have steak and for an appetizer, I had the lobster bisque. As much as I love puff pastry, I don't feel like it added a special taste to the dish. The bisque itself was very buttery and rich so it would have been just fine without the puff pastry, imho. For sides, we had the blue crab jasmine rice and their potato gnocchi. The gnocchi to be was, dare I say, too rich. I like gnocchi but I don't love baked potatoes so I wonder if that might have been why this version wasn't my favorite. The blue crab jasmine rice was an absolute standout. I could not get enough of it. We ordered the tomahawk steak and that was a bit underwhelming for me, too. Not only I terms of the amount we got (we shared it) but also, we got the peppercorn crust and I think I would have preferred to go with horseradish instead. For dessert, we got the bananas foster brioche bread pudding and I thought it paired well with the ice cream. For a restaurant to be as highly rated as J Carver's, I expected much more. Unfortunately, the restaurant fell very short. We ordered the escargot to start and though the appearance of the dish was nice; the taste was otherwise. I advised the server of the sourness I experienced with the escargot and she was offered a replacement. I'm uncertain if it was a bad batch but the replacement also had the same funny taste. I am not a waster of food and will normally finish everything on my plate but I couldn't. I also had the lobster bisque which looked beautiful but taste was very sub par. There was so much promise. I was excited to break into the pastry crust but temperature-wise, the bisque was lukewarm and had a funny taste to it. Management attributed the flavor to the sherry which I'm familiar with. It was simply off. The Fuji Apple Salad was nice but we were 2:3 where things were off. We lost our appetite and called it a night. On my first visit to J Carver's I have a few observations that I'd like to pass on. First it was a Friday and my wife set up an early dinner with another couple. The bad news is that no one in the group made reservations. As we about to leave,because the place was busy,when the manager Andrew started to get creative. He was genuinely concerned that our night might have been ruined so he helped us with the following. Providing my wife and I with a complementary glass of bubbly and then made accommodations in the private dining room for the four of us. Andrew definitely went above and beyond, which was impressive all by itself, but the best news the food was outstanding. The appetizers were tasty and the entrées fantastic. Stopped by J. Carver's for an after dinner drink and dessert after an amazing dinner at Uchibā. We ordered a couple wonderful cocktails and a very tasty dessert. I ordered The Godfather, a cocktail with Makers Mark J. Carver's Private Selection, Grand Marnier, Giffard Crème De Peche, Licor 43, lemon and cocoa bitters. It was a perfect cocktail followed by their Strawberry Vacherin a thin, crisp meringue with strawberries in Grand Marnier and vanilla bean gelato. It was a delicious and satisfying bite. I washed it down and concluded with a perfect dessert cocktail, a Carajillo made with Licor 43, espresso and cinnamon. The drinks and dessert were perfect to cap off the night and my trip to Austin. I'll be back to J. Carver's my next trip in town, next time for a great steak and more tasty cocktails. read more

Sooo good. I got the filet with fried oysters and omg how tender and delicious was the filet. Also had some raw oysters, also delicious. On the side I had asparagus and fries. Both delicious as well. Dessert was the best-- bananas, foster bread, pudding with vanilla ice cream. I even ordered one to go. I sat at the bar with a friend and the seats were very comfortable and the vibe was just super dark and sultry and cozy and I loved it. I think it would be a great place to go in the winter. We had an excellent dinner at J. Carver's. Will definitely go back the next time we are in Austin. Our waiter, Daniel, made helpful suggestions and we were glad we took them. The Beef Filet Steak Tartare started things out perfectly. Husband loved the Dover Sole with Almonds. My Shrimp Scampi was some of the best I've ever had. So glad we found this place. read more
