Bamboo sushi is a celiac girlies dream when craving sushi!! The menu clearly lists the items CONTAINING gluten, which is only 3 dishes. The rest of the large menu is entirely gluten free! I was very excited to learn they have a separate fryer for gluten free food. They have tamari sauce at each table instead of soy sauce. The server informed me that the tempura used for some of the menu items is also gluten free....I was so happy about this! The restaurant staff were knowledgeable about celiac and took care to make me comfortable. I will be coming here often now that I know they prioritize the safety of gluten free customers. Sashimi and sushi here are fresh, and the miso glazed black cod was delicious. Cocktails here aren't very impressive though. We sat by the bar so we got to chat with the friendly chefs as they prepared sushi. I really appreciate that the default for the menu items was gluten free with those few items that had gluten were clearly marked. Two quibbles I have are the sushi came out before the miso soup and salads that we wanted as appetizers. The green tea was delicious but the cups were too hot for me to hold. TRENDY SUSTAINABLE SUSHI RESTAURANT: At a nearby Univerity of Washington shopping Center. I was excited to try Bamboo Sushi as I Had heard of other locations in Portland. I asked to sit at the sushi bar, which was primarily vacant even though parties were waiting for tables. Within about 5 minutes, the bar boy took my order for hot sake but returned a few minutes later to inform me that they were changing out the hot sake and it would be a few minutes more to wait for it. I then asked him if I could put an order in for an appetizer. But he only took drink orders. And so. I waited and waited. Until the head sushi chef behind the sushi bar took notice and asked me what my favorite fish was, I said salmon, and he made special salmon sashimi for me. Very friendly and thoughtful. The bar boy never came back to follow up but finally, a waitress came over and asked me if I had been helped. I said no, told her about the sake, and gave her my entire order. After a while, my order of salmon egg Nigiri came out but still no sake, which did follow in good order. The chef behind the bar asked me, "What did you order? ". I told him I was waiting for my tuna roll and sashimi platter. He looked quizzically at his POS screen, then seemed to figure it out and set to work. I was taking pictures of my food of course and I think I was "made" as a reviewer since the head chef took the time to come out from behind the sushi bar to chat with me. I told him that the sushi was delicious, but the service was spotty. He seemed to take the critique to heart and apologized. I thanked him and finished my meal. I get the feeling that service may be better at the tables. This is not a typical sushi bar where the chefs interact with the customers at the bar. You still have to order from the waitress, and it is impossible to see the chef's hands working as the fish coolers block the view. So, there is no advantage to sitting at the sushi bar. So good sustainable and tasty sushi. The place is clean. Trendy looking and popular with student clientele. So a 1/2-star deduction for spotty service, including the bar boy issue, and another for a disappointing sushi Bar experience. I am leaving four stars. Sustainable sushi spot in U Village. We visited on Saturday evening and they were able to get us seated without a wait - were also able to accommodate our stroller which was much appreciated! The seats are well spaced out and the restaurant has high ceilings which is nice. The volume of music was a bit louder than I would like and they were playing some club-ish music? Food and service was good, drinks pretty good too. I got a non alcoholic drink which pretty tasty. * Roasted maitake mushrooms - delicious, so meaty and flavorful, def recommend if you like mushrooms * Grilled saba - loved it, the pickled mustard seed was a great accompaniment * we chose to get the spicy tuna and spicy albacore as hand rolls. These were great! Crispy nori and filling all the way down. Often you may end up just eating rice and nori but this wasn't the case! * we got several nigiri. You can choose the pre designated yakumi to go with it or naked. Overall I wish we did just naked for the nigiri. Some of the yakumi made it taste a bit weird and drew away from the fish itself. Clean atmosphere, great service, beautiful presentation, and the perfect spot for a party of 2-6 people. I loved the rolls, but especially loved the Poke roll. The togarashi and avocado really complement the tuna and the fish was sooo fresh. Our server recommended the sweet chili cauliflower and it did not disappoint! The outer crust is caramelized like a shell and it doesn't taste like a vegetable at all. Bathrooms were clean and aesthetic. We love a tidy restroom. The only disappointment was the tea selection... no matcha iced tea? Or matcha latte? The only drinks they have are hot genmaicha or cold black tea ($4-5) which is expensive for what it is. No thank you, I'll go to a boba shop instead! But the drinks looked great :) Overall would definitely recommend. Solid place in U Village and definitely much higher quality sushi than the previous sushi options here. The menu leans towards a more fusion dishes, but the sashimi plate was quite good and presented beautifully. They have a nice selection of small plates and sake as well. The one pet peeve was that they served the ama-ebi aburi style, so wasn't too happy about that. And the tempura batter is a bit heavier than I like. Underwhelming flavors, overwhelming prices. Guys, I wasn't expecting huge portions or anything - sushi is expensive, I get that. But come on. I feel like they could've had at least one saving factor when it came to their sushi - but sadly, it was all served at room temperature, not fresh tasting, small, and unsatisfying. We had two signature rolls and one of the basic rolls. One of the signature rolls had the word Dragon in it, and that's really all I remembered. None of the flavors stood out. It looked pretty, but was only one flavor all the way through and all the ingredients really just fell flat. Gave it two stars because the service was really nice, and the ambiance of the actual place wasn't bad. Clean and modern. But I unfortunately wouldn't recommend this place :( their food just isn't it. read more

[ Visited prior to COVID-19 outbreak ] Once I heard that Bamboo Sushi opened up at University Village, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to add this to my vacation day agenda. Branded as the "world's first sustainable sushi restaurant", I admire their commitment to environmentally-friendly practices, reducing their carbon footprint and inspiring others to adopt similar values. The interior is a polished composition of sleek black tables and chairs, natural wood, and shiny countertops. The restaurant opened several months ago, but still looked brand new! We arrived around noon and were seated immediately by the hostess who provided us with a warm welcome. While a large portion of their menu is sushi, they have a whole page dedicated to other options "from the garden", "from the land" and "from the sea". Hungry and ready to eat, the three of us ordered one entree and three of their Signature Rolls to share: + Miso-Cured Black Cod ($15) w/ yuzu miso, ginger, citrus, green onion & chili oil: The cod was delicate and super moist. I'm not a citrus-lover, but the flavor of the miso sauce had bright notes from the yuzu fruit with a bite from the ginger. With the dish containing only three small pieces of cod swimming in sauce, it seemed rather pricey, however the serving turned out to be enough for us, given that black cod is rich and buttery on its own. + Green Machine Roll w/ Crab ($12 + $4 crab): Tempura green beans, avocado, crab and cilantro sweet chili aioli. The Green Machine Roll is a great option for vegetarians, but we decided to splurge a bit and add crab for an additional $4. With or without, it is a roll with bold flavors due to their zesty aioli. It had some pretty powerful notes of garlic and I could definitely taste the cilantro. I just wish that they eased up on the sauce which seemed to mask all the roll's ingredients. Nevertheless, this was delicious with nice contrasting textures between the crunchy beans and smooth avocado. + Ocean Farmer ($15): Crab, avocado, cucumber, topped with garlic oil, shiso (mint family) & seared Hawaiian Kanpachi. This is Bamboo's version of a classic California roll with some fresh shiso and clean finish of the Kanpachi. I unfortunately didn't taste any hint of garlic whatsoever, but I think that would have complemented the roll and made it extra special. + Chasing the Dragon ($13): Shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, crab, cucumber, avocado, tempura flakes. I was definitely shocked by the size of this roll as each piece is huge and stuffed to the max. You first taste their delectable crab, then sense some heat from the spicy tuna, followed by crunch from the tempura shrimp and coating of flakes. Overall, this roll was really well-done, but challenging to eat in a graceful manner. In general, all the rolls we had were relatively substantial with a generous portion of ingredients, wrapped in a thin layer of rice. All our food tasted fresh and we left feeling healthy and satisfied. The waitstaff took good care of us throughout our lunch. Our waiter remembered our order without writing it down and all our dishes arrived correctly in a timely manner. One minor mention is that they do not leave soy sauce on the tables, contrary to other sushi spots. If requested, the waitstaff will pour you a dish of soy sauce table-side. When it comes to pricing, I thought that everything we ordered was reasonably priced, except for the cod which should have included some other sort of side dish. I had high hopes for this place since there were really good reviews and was always being recommended to me, but i was disappointed. The inside was nice and modern, servers are friendly and stylish but the food was okay. Overall the sushi was more like a fusion, for example the nigiri had different kinds of sauces on it and the specialty rolls weren't that special. We got a crispy rice spicy tuna, friday the 13th roll, and the spicy salmon roll. The crispy rice tuna had truffle oil which gave it a weird smell but tasted fine. The crispy rice part was good. The tuna was really mushed up personally i dont like that kind of texture. The spicy salmon roll was just bland The friday the 13th roll was good, but nothing I'd order again. While I appreciate the desire to be sustainable and gluten free, it disappoints in a lot of ways. The business itself is cute, but very loud and busy. I definitely recommend not sitting at the bar to avoid the noises and view of the kitchen. The wait for both service and food was a little too long. Just long enough that we'd realize it'd been a while since we saw our server and then question it a bit. When we did get our food, a server immediately asked if my girlfriend and I were related. When we said no, she back pedaled and said it was a compliment, but like... it's not? My girlfriend and I both have brown hair (mine is dyed green with brown roots) and glasses, but I'm Asian and she's white. Left us feeling really awkward. The food didn't salvage the vibe either. My girlfriend's sunset roll was mostly bland except for a spicy tingle. I got a special, the bamboo sukiyaki and I think it was better than her roll, but not worth the price. Overall, food not great, atmosphere is not the best (at least for the bar), and service wasn't timely or helpful in sustaining the vibe they're attempting. When Blue C Sushi left I was heartbroken that I wouldn't have a sushi spot in University Village anymore. I'm so glad Bamboo Sushi moved in and have redesigned it to make it their own unique space! We went here for dinner one weeknight and were pleased to be seated right away. I'm glad they seated us on the right side of the space away from the families with kids and a more casual atmosphere. The menu was extensive and we were immediately impressed. The service was good and the food was even better. The table edamame was not expected but well received! All of the nigiri was fresh and delicious with my favorites being the uni and the scallop. The amber jack entree dish was the most unique entree I've had at a sushi restaurant in a long time. The flavors and textures were perfectly complementary and I could order that once a week if I'm not careful! The miso soup was very good and just perfect on a cold winter night! Enjoyed a mocktail (Ginger Lemongrass) with the restaurant week lunch menu which included, miso soup, mixed green salad, salmon nigiri, and the Unicorn roll. Everything was flavorful and delicious. The salad was sizable not the started small starter size at most sushi restaurants. The nigiri had lemon zest on top and that was such a nice delicate touch. The cut of salmon was delectable and substantial with the right amount of rice. The unicorn roll was surprisingly good! The sauce was amazing I never needed the tamari. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I've given this location at least 3 shots before writing this review, before and after the re-opening (and even once before Covid). I initially fell in love with this local chain in Portland, and even chose to celebrate my birthday there with 12 friends. Sadly, this location doesn't even come close to what I experienced in Portland. The main reason I won't come back is they serve lukewarm raw fish. This is a huge no-no for me. It's happened every single time - Chirashi bowls, sashimi, etc. The Green Machine roll is incredible but I can't come to the restaurant just for that...everything else on the menu is just mediocre. With so much sushi selection in Seattle, this place needs work. There are also some servers who are very attentive, while others aren't engaged at all and the food takes forever to arrive. The restaurant has a more high end vibe compared to your typical sushi restaurant and the prices definitely reflect that with special rolls ranging between $16-$22. We showed up around 7:30pm on a Wednesday and waited ~15min for a bar seat. Ordered the Hoki Poki Box (left) and the Garden of Eden (right). They were both very unique but not super memorable. I've had sushi here before and don't remember what I ordered but I do remember liking it more then the two we order this time. Food and service was quick once you got seated! Grabbed late lunch here around 3:45 today. The sushi was super delicious and flavorful, great quality of fish to rice ratio. Ambience clean and modern. Sustainability vibes for sure. Downfall was definitely the beginning, several of us waiting in the front, I did see a host guy help 1 person but he went to the back for a long time. Several servers and employees walked by the front and none of them greeted or acknowledged that we were waiting. Very unusual, if they're short staffed they should be more helpful in helping the front too. Or at least acknowledge the guests coming in. Eventually a female manager came up and started seating us. That was the downfall of the visit. Restaurant was probably 15-20% sat on the side that was open, so they were not that busy. Overall nigiri was amazing. I loved the flavor in every different piece, enjoyed the green tea too. Sushi chefs were friendy and greeted Me as I sat. Alex was my server, he greeted me and got me started. He seemed busy. I asked for Limes and that was the only encounter during my meal besides the greet and closing of the tab. Highlight was the food, sushi chefs and green tea for sure. Their happy hour didn't really look interesting, I didn't order anything on there. I just got their nigiri items. For myself 7 nigiri orders and tea, i spent like almost $90 including a 25% added tip. Expected more from service, but food made up for it. We wanted to give this place a try because of its popularity in Oregon. 1.) Overall, I think the food was just okay. Not great, not bad. Bamboo Caesar was great--I would recommend ordering it! The rolls were very mediocre but I would recommend ordering rolls over Nigiri. The nigiri pieces are GINORMOUS, to some that might not be a bad thing but when it's so big that it's hard to eat and have to be eaten in 3 separate bites, it can become unappetizing. 2.) Wow, great ambience, service and food quality is quite high. We loved the prawns Tempura which is just about the best fried prawns anywhere I've eaten, and the sushi was fresh. After checking out Bamboo Sushi at a Yelp event, husband and I decided to return for a splendid birthday dinner. We opted for Omakase and were delighted by a wonderful selection of nigiri and sashimi as well as miso soup, edamame and mushroom and chicken karaage. I was pleasantly surprised by the mushroom karaage in particular, it was flavorful and crispy without being overtly greasy or heavy. The nigiri and sashimi portions were bountiful. Given that this is in U village, the prices make sense. It's the small portions and simplicity that were surprising. We got the albacore carpaccio because it looked good based on the ingredients list on the menu, but we had no idea what to expect because I don't know what carpaccio is. When it arrived, I was disappointed to find it was just 5 small pieces of fish with the other ingredients on top of, but that was my fault for not knowing what carpaccio is. This dish costs $15, so basically each piece was $3+ each. I thought it would be a more substantial dish. I also ordered the ocean farmer and Friday the 13th rolls. Those arrived with not much on them, so it appears this sushi place isn't about quantity and substance. They're more focused on other things like sustainability, and I would only recommend it to people seeking that aspect over decent sushi. I was still so hungry after these dishes, so you're going to need to order more than 3 dishes to be full. Overall, their sushi is very simpleized and basic with only random rare ingredients like apple and pear to help them "stand out". The bathroom has no gender, so everyone waits for the same stalls and then washes their hands at the same sinks. They have bamboo toilet paper, and the stalls are enclosed rooms. read more
