We picked up a brownie and a whoopie pie to go. The brownie was very fudgey and salty. It was the opposite of the typical brownie which is rich and airy. Hearing about the best brownies in the world had me trekking through sketchy, relatively empty streets one evening until I found Baked. Not from the area, I decided to try as many confections as my wallet and insulin levels would allow. Get the salted caramel brownie. It was featured on Food Network's "Best Thing I Ever Ate" - salty episode. It's perfect. The brownie is soft and gooey and the fleur de sel topping highlights the chocolaty goodness and even provides a little texture crunch. They distribute these for sale at some other bakeries and ice cream shops in Brooklyn, and whenever I'm in the area and I see them for sale, I get a few to bring home to MD. I liked the brownie so much I though I'd try some other salty- chocholate items. This however, lead to disappointment. A salted chocolate cake was nothing spectacular. The salt gets lost in the icing and doesn't really contribute much. Bummer. The salty hot chocolate was also not as good. It was better than the cake, and definitely rich, but it wasn't super spectacular and I could've done without the salt. The place is small, but there are booths and the staff is friendly in spite of how busy it can get here! Definitely make the trip if you're in the area. read more

I have two of the Baked cookbooks, when I bake from these books, people think I am a baking goddess. That said, the expectations for the bakery were high. I was visiting Brooklyn, and had to make the short trek to Red Hook. I ordered a macchiato and a chocolate whoopie pie, and took home a $5 brownie "ends" pack of 4 brownies, and 2 regular brownies. The whoopie pie blew me away, it was chocolatey, soft, moist, and the filling was gooey and sweet. The macchiato was great and the atmosphere, even better. A relaxing place to have a coffee and a baked good. The brownies were tasty, the sweet and salty and the brewers blondie were my favourite. I enjoyed Baked and would recommend it to anyone in the area. read more

Johnny Depp circa 21 Jumpstreet and Edward Scissorhands equals me crushing hard. Johnny Depp circa Amber Heard equals me struggling to find glimmers of his former allure. That is sort of where I'm at right now in terms of the evolution of my feelings towards Baked: I have been coming to this spot since it first opened over a decade ago. Back then, I fell hard for the layer cakes. Especially the Red Hook Red Hot, a cocoafied version of Red Velvet frosted with cinnamon buttercream instead of classic cream cheese icing and dotted with candy Red Hots. Honestly, I was in it for the Red Hots. Why are those so hard to come by? But I digress... Over the years, I discovered plenty of other favorites, like the Coca Cola Bundt, Coffee Crisp Bar and the seasonal Peppermint Brownie. During that same time, my infatuation waned as I encountered the occasional dry, crumbly white cake. A throat-catchingly dry slice of Green Tea Layer cake leaps to mind. Eventually, I avoided ordering white cakes altogether. I'd still stop by for the occasional treat, usually to or from Fairway. But I confess, my attention was also diverted by newer, shinier Brooklyn bakeshops like Buttermilk and Sugar Couture. Anyway, we recently came by for some bars that included the Grasshopper, Peanut Butter Crispy, and Malted Milkball Cheesecake. There was ZERO mint flavor in the Grasshopper bar. The Malted Milkball Cheesecake was equally BLAND. Just a whole lot of rich, creamy nothingness. So disappointing!!! The only winner was the Peanut Butter Crispy bar, though the peanut butter flavor really dominated, while the dark chocolate ganache topping got a little lost. When Momofuku Milk Bar started popping up all over the place, it began individually wrapping my favorite Compost Cookie, creating a very corporate chain-like vibe. The cookie no longer tasted as special, or delicious. I hope that is not what is happening here with Baked's second Tribeca location making it tougher to maintain quality. read more

I also love the atmosphere of this place: cozy and warm, with blond wood and chocolate brown walls echoing the colors of the confections inside. Their coffee is also very good. Being a fan of several neighborhood establishments, I've stopped by Baked on several occasions for a snack or to while away some time. I've yet to understand their fame, and each subsequent visit leaves me with the same impression. In a neighborhood that's still rough around the edges but has an appealing character building up, this place is a good fit. The dark brown and rust orange interior is very warm and welcoming. One side is lined with thick wooden tables, plenty of seating for a bakery. They sell a variety of baked goods, displayed all around the counter, and a basic selection of coffees, teas, and a few other drinks. Service is generally ok. Its a comfortable place to spend time. As far as the baked goods, I've never had anything there that I can recollect really liking; everything sort of registered an ok-but-wouldn't-get-again reaction. I've had cupcakes, whoopi pie, zucchini pecan bread, banana bread, and brownies, and not any one item made an impression on me so I can't recommend their baked goods as a reason to specifically go. Its unfortunate to say but I don't think the staff here are accustomed to POC Customers. I came in today to order a cake and after being skipped in line 5 times I was greeted by a barista who was more concerned with talking to her friend in line. I was then handed a cake menu and told the decorators weren't in so any questions I had couldn't be answered. I left offended and annoyed. Won't give them my business anytime soon. read more

Lemon bars here are awesome! If you come to baked you have to try their lemon bars. Baked is a nice little coffee shop/ bakery. It's a nice place to study and grab some great food. The staff is super friendly and helpful with deciding on what to order. They have all kinds of treats from sweets to savory. I ordered the chocolate chip banana bread, lemon bar and their peanut butter crispy. The banana bread was great , super moist and not too sweet. The lemon bar was tart and delicious , the crust of the bar was so good. My only complaint was the peanut butter crispy. The peanut butter tasted really odd and it left a bad feel in the mouth afterwards. Other than that everything else was awesome. They make cakes here as well and I heard they do an amazing coconut cake so I will be back for that. read more

I ordered the Coconut Cream cake over the phone for my boyfriend's b-day. First I called and left a message and then someone got back to me. The guy on the phone was always very nice and courteous. The delivery of the cake to my house went smoothly however you only get a 3 hour window as opposed to a solid delivery time. The cake tasted really good. Three very fluffy, moist cake layers held together by sweet but not too sweet coconut flavored cream frosting. I think the bf enjoyed the cake and so did all the guests. This place is so cute! If I lived in this neighborhood I could see myself bringing my laptop and spending a whole day. Okay, maybe half a day here and the other half at the gym. Like a few other Yelpers, I came here out of sheer curiosity (and desire for something good) after watching Baked featured on The Food Network. I saw it on "The Best Thing I Ever Ate" salty segment as Claire Robinson's pick for the Salty Brownie. And let me just say....not worth the hype. The brownie was cakey and a bit on the dry side. And I guess I was expecting a littl more salty. I also tried another brownie, the one with the cayenne in it, but again, not much spice there either. I saw that they also had cupcakes, and being a fan of miniature cakes for 1, I bought 2....and I soon realized I shouldn't. The cupcakes were also dry, and kind of stale. They also weren't packaged properly, despite the somewhat cool looking box and bag they came in. I mean, take a look at the photo I upload and you'll see why I was additionally disappointed. Although they were no where near closing, the mood in the little bakery/cafe/coffee shop felt like they were about to lock up and close out for the day. It was dim to the point of dark, and I just really felt like I was intruding. Although 2 stars may appear a bit harsh, my thoughts about Baked is exactly what the 2-star rating describes - I've experienced better. read more

Everything here is exceptionally delicious. You can tell that they truly take pride in everything they make. The quality of the pastries and sandwiches are really good. I have tried almost everything they have. I am hooked on their banana pudding; it's SO AMAZING! There is a vanilla bean custard, white cake, fresh bananas, topped with a vanilla wafer crumble. The service is on point every day, variety of treats plentiful, and I am willing to pay higher prices for special treats. I am excited to try the fall treats in October. I've also been eyeing the cheesecake these past few weeks. Their stumptown coffee is so mellow and subtle. I crave the iced Americanos.. I have no negatives for this place, really. The coffee crisp bar didn't have the coffee taste I was looking for, but definitely made up for feeling like a soft rice crispy chocolate bar. The salted caramel twix didn't have the heavy caramel stickiness to it, but seemed to have a very unique cookie base which I was impressed. The chocolate banana cake felt very light opposed to being heavy as I expected it to be like most banana cakes. It was refreshing, but too many sweets at once. Definitely order only one and drink and you're good to go!! Only sad part was that they should have changed the names of their desserts better to better represent the actual flavour. Finally got to check out their original bakery in Red Hook. We went to the Tesla showroom and decided to stop by here afterwards. We got cupcakes to go but had the lemon lime bar at the café with some cortados. The lemon lime bar was amazing! I make a pretty mean lemon bar but I really loved their version! I'd give zero stars if I could. Couples, if you're looking to work with them for a wedding cake, their unprofessionalism and irresponsibility in how they treated us should be considered just in case they do the same to you. We made an appointment with Baked Red Hook on June 13 to do a cake tasting today. I had them confirm THREE times within the email thread as to who I'd meet with and at what location at that time. We showed up today only for them to say "we don't do tastings here, I don't know why she'd say that in this email, we can't help you" from the manager. No remorse, no attempt to rectify the situation, and no sincerity. Which is shocking when you think they'd want such a big client for a wedding. Already angry and ready to give up, I decided to call the Tribeca location anyways to see if they had the appointment in their system instead to try to make sure we were not screwing anyone over. They didn't have the appointment in the system either, unsurprisingly, and were just as unhelpful. "We're pretty busy but I mean we can try to fit you in." It was just a lot of finger pointing and putting blame on everything but themselves, and it was so unprofessional. No one tried to rectify anything and we are left from square one. We had such high hopes for this vendor but their professionalism is lacking and I would not trust them with my big day. read more

Great baked goods with a nice cosy café experience. Really loved the chocolate pecan slice and the cheesecake. There are no frills. You don't get any garnishes or extras. Downside is that people come and sit at the few tables available for hours. It must be difficult for the café owners as those tables don't make much money. read more

We were so happy with our Baked cake(s)! From the start the team was helpful - they set up an delicious tasting for us, went through all our options, and didn't pressure us to get anything more than what we needed. I wanted a "naked cake" with fresh flowers from our florist. We ended up with just that, a beautiful, small three tiered cake and two back-up cakes which they were nice enough to do the same crumb layer/naked style on so we could also display them. After the introduction to hopstop.com (Thanks Alliegee!) I have developed this misplaced confidence in being able to "boldly go where no Manhattanite has gone before"... (ok, seems bit of a stretch to talk about Red Hook in the same vein, but you get the picture). That said in the three times that I have ventured here in the past few weeks, there is a narrow stretch b/w the Smith and 9th station and Baked where I've been grateful for the police patrol car doing the rounds. I thus agree with one of the earlier reviewers on taking the bus from the subway exit. But, yes... Baked is indeed fantastic! I love the place! Even though I am no longer as enamored of three layer cakes as I used to be, Baked is the only place where I've been motivated to finish the large cake slice. I've really,really liked their carrot cake - with carrots, raisins, orange zest, walnuts and covered with a light cream cheese frosting. The frosting is just the right quantity and consistency to help one enjoy the cake, without overpowering it. Has to be one of the best carrot cakes I've had in the city! Similarly, the "red hook red hot" - their version of the red velvet cake (with cinnamon buttercream instead of cream cheese frosting) with valrhona cocoa is also excellent. Loved the fluffy frosting, even though it wasn't traditional. I liked, but wasn't bowled over by, the "sweet and salty" - their award winning chocolate cake with fleur de sel caramel and caramel chocolate ganache. I found it a bit dry, but liked the salty undercurrent. Baked also carries "juniors" - which are cupcake versions of the cakes, but need to be ordered by the dozen. The readily available cupcakes are generally chocolate or white cake with chocolate or vanilla buttercream. At times, one finds the red velvet cupcake. The cakes are soft and moist while the frosting doesn't inundate you with butter flavor. I could do with more frosting, though. I've tried other goodies as well and really liked their "chocolate cloud" cookie. One of the best chocolate chunk cookies in the city (5 stars!) As always, better when heated slightly for that melted chocolate flavor. I couldn't find the "bakedbar" which appeared really interesting (coconut, chocolate, walnuts, butterscotch, condensed milk) and instead asked for and enjoyed the "pb krispy bar" (peanut butter and chocolate on a bed of chewy and crunchy rice crispies), which however, was the only item on the menu that needed to be thawed for a bit. Many will also enjoy the cookie sandwich (with chocolate or vanilla or coffee or peppermint buttercream inside). It's a really cute place to sit down and enjoy a relaxed afternoon with some excellent coffee (gimme! and not Gorilla, as noted in an earlier review). I've had a great time whenever I've gone, even though there are occasions when the crowds have forced me to walk around and wave to Lady Liberty before coming back to find an empty chair. People while away hours and hours over cake and coffee. You will find many students here as well, some who could be a bit more considerate. In one of my visits I had to exercise all my powers of concentration to shut out what I was hearing behind me. Two students were preparing for a medical exam and reciting the symptoms of various diseases. One that I still remember (!) Diabetes Mellitus: Unusual thirst, frequent urination, increased appetite and possible weight loss.... now do I really want to hear this (and other graphic details that I am sparing y'all) while enjoying my cake? Aaarghhh! Baked enjoys more than its share of regular patrons - quite a few people stop to compare notes with others on the happenings in their life. It's a nice, relaxed, chill ambience overall. The only reason I am being stingy in the rating and excluding the fifth star is the non-availability of many items on their menu given the standard excuse of "seasonal array". I haven't been able to sample a number of highly recommended items as a result: Chocolate scotch pudding, baci tart (chocolate hazelnut praline in a chocolate shell and topped with chocolate), "peanut butter, chocolate and banana tart", etc. Baked will exceed your high expectations. I've thoroughly enjoyed all my visits here. Do make the effort to make the trek! read more

Oh Baked! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways: 1. You are the master of salty-sweetness which is the best thing in the world (ever had a chocolate covered pretzel? You know what I'm talking about...) Your chocolate tarts with sea-salt are transcendent. And your salty-sweet brownies make me smile simply because they exist. 2. Your shop is clean and friendly (and orange!) and I really enjoy the strange, subtle sloping effect of the wood benches. Nice touch. 3. Your staff is awesome! None of that surly, over-it, barista nonsense. Just laid-back service with a smile. 4. Your attitude as a business has just the right amount of Brooklyn-hipster-irony to give you street cred, but not enough to make you obnoxious. Love your "I am not a triathlete" marketing campaign. So why 4 stars? A. I don't love your coffee. It's fine, but not stellar - something about the brew just doesn't sit right on my palate. And B., because you're in Red Hook, which I'm sorry, is just too far away from my life. Not even those tarts are a good enough reason to get me on the bus/train/water-taxi/sherpa combo needed to get out here on a regular basis Harsh, I know, but such is life. So, Baked, get your butt to Manhattan (preferably the west side, but I won't nitpick) and ours will be a tale of true love. But until then, I will have to love you from across the river, only to meet when I need to go to Ikea. read more

OK Baked, you got me. There is finally a cookie in the world that has chocolate that I like that is not an Oreo. Now the cookie I'm talking about is the oatmeal and it may be white chocolate, and the amount of it is minimal. But the combo of coconut, dried cherries, and coarsely chopped pecans is divine. Also, the thickness of the cookie is perfect. The inside is perfectly moist and the bottom is golden brown. It's just a beautifully crafted cookie. read more

A bit of a hike from the F, but worth the trip. Baked catered my wedding 4 years ago, and while this is not a review of the catering services, I should mention that everything went off without a hitch and everybody loved them. We came back to Baked on our 4-year anniversary to sample some of the same cupcakes and delights we had at our wedding and were not disappointed at all. We were able to get the same cupcake flavors, but the seasonal cake was not available anymore :/ The standout here was the Chocolate Caramel Sea-Salt cupcake. It is soooo sooooo good. I am not even a fan of chocolate cakes, but the carmely creamy frosting and large salt chunks on top make this cake the perfect melt-in-your-mouth, hit ALL the flavor buds, top-of-the-line cupcake. We also had the Red Velvet cupcake and a moonpie, but we loved the Sea-Salt Caramel one the best -- even ordered a second one before leaving. read more

I hosted a 40th Anniversary party for my parents in December and ordered almost all the desserts from Baked. I went in there one day in November to check out what they had to offer (after passing by it several times while walking my dog) and once I said I was thinking about ordering a few cakes, the girl behind the counter offered me a whole bag filled with sample cupcakes. I didn't even ask for samples but she said "well, you gotta taste what you might get! Enjoy!" It was about 10am on a Sunday morning and I sat outside and gorged myself with sample cupcakes. I was hooked. I ordered several cakes and pies from Baked. They were extremely pleasant to order from - the woman on the phone was very patient with me as I changed my mind 800 times - and the pies and cakes were all ready exactly on time and were very fresh. One of the stars of the party was, of course, the Sweet & Salty, which in cake form is absolutely beautiful. Everything about Baked is sweet and nice and local and delicious. I would never dream of ordering sweets from anywhere else now! read more

I am absolute fan! I make Red Hook a destination just to stock up on goodies. Staff is great. I just had the cherry buckle and it was perfect! Everything I've had there is top notch. The Samao's are unique as well as the brookster which is combo brownie and chocolate chip cookie combo. Also had a banana chocolate chip quick bread. Plain brownies are as good as I've ever had. Nice little cafe located in Red Hook. The sweet and salty brownie was amazing. One of the better brownies I've had. They serve Stumptown coffee which is a plus. They also have there own brand of granola which was quite good. Definitely will return when I am in the area. read more
