The Brookster is ridiculous. It's a normal sized brownie with a chocolate chip cookie baked INSIDE the brownie. Very decadent. Very chocolaty. There are so many other treats I want to try like the whoopie pie, the cloud cookie, the sweet and salty brownie, the coconut cupcake, the mini lemon bundt cake, the homemade oreo...heck, I want to try everything, okay! I only wish they had a location closer to me, but the bike ride to Red Hook is worth it. It's situated on Van Brunt Street, which has become a mini foodie mecca. You're minutes away from Fort Defiance, the Good Fork, Red Hook Lobster, Grindhaus, just to name a few. Chill, friendly service. They've got a few tables to sit and enjoy your treats and coffee. We had a pretty good lemon bar here- nothing too special. But we had a side order of disinterested service. Just saying...

If I could I would give 0 stars, but unfortunately there is no such option. I just walked in to get a coffee and a pastry with zero expectation to be rudely treated by a worker (tall with light curly short hair) Once I ordered the coffee I asked her "what's this" regarding a pastry in the window(to me it looked like it could have been a Nutella brownie with a cookie or just chocolate, I don't like Nutella which is why I asked) her response to me "what does it look like?" . I honestly was a bit dumbfounded, it was really unexpected. She then proceeded to tell me something else, but at this point I clocked out and just asked her for a Whoopi pie. She then tells me "not if you re going to talk to me like that" I'm assuming referring to my not so enthused tone of voice. When I told her that she was in fact being rude to me, she denied it and told me "she is sorry I'm so hurt" and that I can leave. I asked for her name and she refused to give it to me. We had to wait outside because only a certain amount of people are allowed inside at a time which is fine and completely understandable.. so we waited. On occasion I grab an iced chai or fresh squeezed orange juice and a gluten-free baked good from here. Yum! I do wish they carried gluten-free muffins, scones or something besides cookies. I love this place! Came here after a visit to ikea and everything in there is quite amazing. Their coffee cake is so moist and delicious. Love their quiche which comes with a side salad, makes for a perfect brunch. My favorite is their caramel bars with sea salt, so good! Half baked. Almost there. Could be slightly better, in my opinion. I was really excited my first visit to Baked- the famous Red Hook bakery making some noise in this far out area drawing from the IKEA spill over. Gee the neighbors must be happy. Nice to have such a cute and vibrant coffee house bakery to spend weekends in. Too bad there is nowhere to really sit and relax. Baked is crowded with a line to the back. It's also loud and while there are many tables to take over they are exactly that- already taken over. We tried the grasshopper pie bar. It was a solid square of mint filling layered with chocolate. I suppose it would have been better enjoyed room temp but nobody was going to wait. I chewed each bite feeling like I was swallowing toothpaste. I did much better with the chocolate cloud cookies I brought home. Oh man, those were good. They reminded me of these little homemade French drop cookies I used to have as a kid. Today I was craving hot chocolate and a marshmallow. My hot chocolate was given to me luke warm. The giant brick of a piece marshmallow sat there floating. It wouldn't melt. I ended up cutting it in pieces and eating it with a knife. I loved the marshmallow. However, I wouldn't order the hot chocolate again. I also bought the sweet and salty brownie famed by "The Best Thing I Ever Ate". It was good but not great. It made me want Fat Witch brownies. I don't usually travel to Brooklyn for food but when I do I make sure I order a lot to make my trip worth it. The first thing I noticed was their decor when I went inside. It felt like being in a cabin. Lots of long wooden tables. Very hipster like vibes from the people who went here. Most on their laptop. The line wasn't too bad when I came here on Saturday at 1pm. I was too distracted by food to notice how long it took for me to finally order the goodies. I ordered hot apple cider, which was good but I definitely had better before. I also had pumpkin cheesecake, pumpkin whoopie, brookster, and deep dark brownie. Pumpkin cheesecake - I liked it. It was light and just exactly what I needed to fill my pumpkin craving. Pumpkin whoopie - It was sweet. Too sweet for me. Brookster- A chocolate chip baked in a brownie...delicious! Deep Dark Brownie- I originally saved this for later mainly because my sister uses their recipe to bake her brownies and so I saved it for her. I usually take photos of my food and since I was eating most the food at this place I included this in the picture. However once my sister received it little did I know there was a white dot on the brownie, which she definitely says it was a mold. I looked back at my photo and zoomed in to the brownie... I noticed that dot she found was there since I bought it. I cannot give you a review of how it taste since my sister decided it was unsafe to eat as we did find another white dot inside the brownie, which resulted to her throwing it out. My friend was also with me and he decided to order a brookster and a peanut butter crisp. He found the peanut butter crisp too sweet. Would I come back here again? Featured on the most recent episode of Throwdown! with Bobby Flay, Baked is a bakery located in sleepy Red Hook. The specialty in this house is peanut butter banana cream pie. Visiting though, you may have trouble laying your hands on one. Today, they were all sold out of the pies. Fortunately though, I was told that if I was willing to wait 10 minutes, they would have the individual tart versions available. That was really what I had in mind to begin with and 10 minutes seemed like no wait at all, so I was back in business. Waiting on the pie really left us scattered though. The two people manning the register were really scattered-brained, so we had difficulty putting in the rest of our orders. I wanted a cup of coffee and my girlfriend wanted a latte and a grasshopper dessert. At first we couldn't order together, and then we couldn't order with the lady and had to wait on the guy, and then we could order with the lady, etc. It was a confusing mess. Eventually we got all of our food and had a seat. The pie is really quite good, and I definitely recommend trying it. The peanut butter and the banana cream blended together quite nicely. The mixture was rich and smooth making it especially decadent. The notes of chocolate only added to the pie. The coffee though, was a whole different matter. The large is especially large -- the cup would have easily contained 2-3 slices of the pie. The coffee itself was dreadful. There was a strange metallic taste and a less than pleasant aftertaste. I managed about a third of a cup before ultimately abandoning it. Just avoid it all together if you can. I am not sure why they try to have a coffee shop angle to their business, if their coffee is so remarkably lousy. The place itself is a cross between a coffee shop and a bakery. There is not much seating, and what is available, is not the best. My seat did not have a proper backing for example. Instead, it was the back of someone's lounge chair. Turning around had me promptly elbowing someone in the head -- ouch. Also, the tables and floors were pretty messy and did not look like they were especially clean. It was not a place I really wanted to hang out. On my inaugural visit to Red Hook, we dumped ourselves out at IKEA (and not a moment too soon, as we forked over all the cash in our wallets once the fare was tabulated) and got directions from a passerby to Van Brunt Street. Baked seemed like a perfect detour on our way to the bar. Since they don't do iced chai I went for an iced yerba mate which was spicy and delicious. I also got two brownies for the train ride back to DC that I had scheduled for later in the evening. I ended up sleeping on the train but opened the brownies yesterday. When I am in the mood, I get the Sweet & Salty Brownie from GGP. I don't always buy it when I go to GGP (or else I would be the size of a Goodyear blimp and float away), but probably once a month. Headed here to quench my sweet tooth and decided to go with a Grasshopper pie and some of their house coffee. Let me just say, ordering here was rough. It was chaotic and disjointed but we ended up getting what we wanted. Looking around, the seating area was dirty and unwelcoming to sit down but we managed to find a somewhat clean table (that I had to wipe down myself). Got the lukewarm coffee and it tasted like lighter fluid. Yes, it was bad! Although plentiful, it could not be consumed. I let it stay and get cold. The Grasshopper pie was fine though and tasty. I took most of it home and took bites of it here and there over the next several days and it kept nicely. The claim to fame at this place is their Lemon-lime bars. On a Red Hook Food Tour this past weekend, baked was THE sweet spot for a handful of die-hard enthusiasts among our pack. Naturally, I had larger-than-life expectations. The first thing someone noticed when we walked in was, "there's only 3 lemon bars left" - that said, we nabbed two as a group. Then a variety of other desserts were ordered.. Strawberry Whoopie Pie, a monster cookie (I want to say it was the Oatmeal Cherry?), and their S'mores Nut Bar. Now with all of these desserts, I was sadly underwhelmed. The Lemon-lime bar was a tiny bit too tart for me, and though it really was refreshing, I concluded that I would not have desired to have more than a bite or two. The large cookie, was a bit dry and hard and uninteresting. I'm usually a sucker for healthy treats with descriptions of any organic, pure, natural, oatmeal, flax seed, dried fruit, pumpkin seed, goji berry, or any variety never-before-heard-of, ancient, antioxidant effects to it, but this cookie, though not vegan, tasted just as bad as most vegan desserts I have had before (with the sole exception of the ice cream at Lula's Sweet Apothecary!!!). Now, I love all things S'mores, but their S'mores bar was a royal fail. The texture and flavors did not seem to blend well, and though the peanuts sprinkled atop were interesting, taken as a whole, I felt something was oddly askew. Unforgivable. There are no second chances in my book when it comes to S'mores; you must get it right the first time. Really, the only thing I enjoyed was their Strawberry Whoopie Pie. The cream in the center along with the fresh slices of strawberry were light and airy and balanced out the heaviness and thickness of the outside cookie layers. It was extraordinary and I ate every last morsel of it. I wish I had tried their cupcakes because they looked quite tantalizing behind the glass counters, but I was more than satiated with my Whoopie Pie. Probably the go to bakery in red hook as they make great cupcakes and cookies. Go for their caramel or red velvet cupcakes. Super moist and a buttery creamy icing. Eat them on premise though as they don't hold up outside and especially in the heat. You'll find your icing running off the cake. A great double chocolate chip cookie as well. Came to my original love in Red Hook today. Had to put in a special order for the Green Tea Cupcakes because they tend to not be in the regular rotation. However this is my favorite cupcake from Baked and it's certainly not for everyone. The cake itself is almond white...not too sweet and perfect combination of dense/fluffy. The icing is green tea buttercream and does taste like green tea, but a cool, dessert version hahaha! However, fear not...you will certainly find some sweet goodness here! Pistachio, Pistachio (pistachio white cake w/ vanilla honey buttercream); Lemondrop ( white lemon cake w/lemon curd filling and vanilla lemon buttercream) and Carrot Cakes are all best sellers and equally delish :-). This location is smaller and more down to earth than TriBeCa (it's Brooklyn, so of course). However, if you're in the area, it's definitely worth a stop. Also, don't sleep on the Deep Dark and Sweet & Salty Brownie--the TRUTH. So amazing if you're a chocolate lover, yummy. As I am writing this review...trying not to go into a dessert coma because I can't put my fork down. Icing and chocolate is everywhere, soooo good! I have to admit, I fell prey to the Food Network on this one. The ONLY place I told my friend I HAD to visit on my trip was Baked. Having seen "The Best Thing I Ever Ate Salty" and seeing the seemingly amazing brownie, I had high expectations. And having gone to Red Hook to try what turned out to be amazing lobster rolls, I thought Baked would be the perfect end to a culinary adventure. Yeah, not so much. Upon my first request, the brownie was not available, so I was directed to the cupcake version. It was ok, but the cake was very dry and I figured the brownie would be much better. My friend got the whopee pie and, it too, was dry...I also wasn't too hot for the frosting. Then, the very sweet and helpful members of the staff brought me what I was after. I was elated and so grateful for them going out of their way for me. I unwrapped the brownie...took the long awaited bite...and was hugely and totally disappointed. The baked goods I sampled at Baked would have gotten a two-star review, but the helpful and very amiable staff earned an extra. However, I will not return the next time I visit Red Hook. I've BEEN a fan since October! I met the owners in October 2008. I was in the Ace Hotel out in Seattle, WA, and lo and behold, there was a pastry happy hour in the lobby of the hotel. I had a dinner reservation I was dashing off to. But, DAM, how am I supposed to resist a pastry happy hour? Brownies, and monster chocolate chip cookies, and pumpkin moon pies? Oh my. Plus a little plastic cup of nondescript (but no doubt Washington State) red wine to wash it all down with? The rez hadta wait. At the pastry happy hour, I was going to be cool, y'know, because I hadn't eaten. I could have easily mauled every brownie, cookie, and moon pie on that platter. EASILY. But I didn't. I took one of each. And then took one of each back to my room for later. And then went back and got one more of each. :-) See. I can control it. Anyway, I bought a cookbook, got it signed, and took a picture with the authors while I was knocking back brownie after brownie (true confession) and slorkin down plastic cup after plastic cup of red wine. Memorial Weekend, while I was in NYC celebrating with Lauren S. and we decided to make the journey to Baked. Things went pretty well until we got to Lorraine Street. Google Maps [mobile] showed Baked at Lorraine & Henry. When we got to Lorraine & Henry, it was the back of some abandoned public pool. Yikes! So don't use google maps [mobile] to get there. We pressed on [on foot] and asked more people, over and over again how to get to Van Brunt St. They just kept telling us "It's down there, just keep going straight." ARRRRRRRRRGH! I didn't flinch. I wanted my cupcake. Anyway, we finally found Baked. It's cute! It's great inside! Its like an urban rustic moose lodge with stuffed bird and wood paneling and all! Loved it! Got the red velvet cupcake. Not cream cheese frosting. Cake part needs more chocolate. I wish I'd gotten the moon pie or the brownie that I had in Seattle. Darn. Lauren S. had the brownie and raved. Took the carrot cake to go. Yumster! It was so moist and full of pineapple (which I love) and carrot and cake and coconut (which I usually hate but this time it didn't overpower). And the cream cheese frosting was so creamy and good. I loved it. Yum. The restroom, a onezy, is clean, has nice soft hand towels, and plenty of soap and hot, hot, water. Why haven't I given 5 stars with all this love? Minimum charge to use your credit/debit card there. Plus, Wi-Fi costs $10. To me, that's not right. On my way back to the train, I passed by this cute little place with an orange door. The brightly colored door, plus the name of the place, Baked, immediately caught my attention. Had to go in.  Everything is handmade there every day, from cookies, to cakes, to brownies, to pies and bars. Everything looked far too good to just try one thing...and I'm horrible at moderation. So, I asked for some suggestions.  I went for The Millionaire. This bar should be named the Billionaire. A sweet and salty treat, you can't have a bad day after taking a bite of one of these. It's layered with a shortbread as the base, light and buttery that melts in your mouth. Then, there's a thin layer of salted caramel, with more of a consistency of a custard, but rich and creamy with that perfect salty and sweet component. Then, its topped with a layer of dark chocolate ganache, which, is also amazing in flavor and texture. All the elements combined create a winning team. read more

I stumbled across this serene little hole-in-the-wall completely by accident while waiting for the nearby IKEA to open -- if you're looking for coffee, it's literally your ONLY option within walking distance -- but man, am I glad I did. The atmosphere is quiet and relaxed, and the barista behind the counter greeted me with a friendly smile when I walked in. There are outlets available for those planning on camping out, and magazines to peruse if you have, for whatever reason, forgotten your laptop like a good Brooklyn hipster and need something else to pass the time. But what really sets Baked apart is the coffee. I ordered a soy latte, expecting something fairly generic and not particularly caring as long as it had lots of caffeine. Then I took a sip, and I died. Tastebud nirvana. I don't know what unholy witchcraft they used to give their lattes just the right balance of bitterness, body, and flavor, but this felt like all the angels in heaven decided to host an impromptu harp-jam session on my tongue. I immediately went out and purchased a bag of Stumptown coffee and plan to ask what kind of soy milk they use when I next find myself in the area. So, yeah. So after pigging out at Red Hook's Latin-American food trucks, my friend and I walked through the 'hood to Baked, because she'd read that this place was considered to have the best cupcakes in NYC. High praise. High, daunting praise. I walked in with bated breath. The result is that while the cupcakes didn't make me see Jesus, they were exceptionally good. Cakes were moist and sweet without causing my sensitive teeth pain. The frosting was definitely not too sweet, though I wish it had been slightly thicker and creamier--it was almost runny. The flavors are amazing, though. Definitely of the more unique variety, like pistachio (which I chose), salted chocolate (delicious and diabetes-inducing!) and lemon curd. My first exposure to "Baked" goods was the sea salt caramel chocolate cupcake, exported to Royale Bakery in Manhattan. It was absolutely horrid: hard, slimy buttercream and dry, flavorless cake. I chalked it up to a fluke and decided to go straight to the source. One free IKEA ferry shuttle trip later, I found myself pulling open the faux branch door handle and entering the most ridiculously hipster bakery I've ever stumbled upon. The place is cozy--one side lined with tables from hewn tree trunks (tip: they go fast and people tend to linger), the other with the counter and baking area. The places oozes hipster, but also Park Slope, with screaming babies and their self-righteous parents. But that's neither here nor there. You can always get your goods to go, so let's get to it: I made sure to steer clear of the cupcakes and ended up with a slice of burnt sugar bundt cake with caramel buttercream and candied ginger on top (amazing! but a bit costly at $4.25 per slice), sweet and salty brownie ($3.50, a bit disappointing--just tasted like an underbaked brownie with cubes of salt on top), and vanilla marshmallow ($0.50, tasted like a moister Jet-Puffed). So...in short, I feel like this place gets lots of hype because it's started by two guys (we all know that there's severe gender inequality in the food industry). And the place is cute; however, the goods are only so-so (I'd get the cake again, but that's about it). But the place is hip(ster). And we all know about Brooklyn and hipster and gentrification and Red Hook, so you know this place has got it made. The end. Good Lord I don't know where to begin. There's so much in this little bakery/cafe that looks delicious, I had so much trouble choosing. I went with a few customer favorites for my first visit. The first thing a tried was the Sweet & Salty Brownie ($3.00). I'm a sucker for sweet & salty, and this brownie was damn near perfect. It was gooey, and not overly sweet or salty. The caramel throughout was also a nice touch. The next thing I tried was the Millionaire Bar ($3.25). I was a bit skeptical about this one. I'm not sure why, but it was probably my favorite thing I tried. It's a shortbread base, with a salted caramel and dark chocolate ganache top. I really liked that it wasn't overly sweet. It's soft and served cold which I enjoyed. Kind of like an ice box cookie. The last thing I devoured, even though my belly was telling me no more, was the Peanut Butter Crispy ($3.25). This was my least favorite. I have an extremely high tolerance for sweet things, but I had trouble finishing it. It's just too much. Dark chocolate ganache top, followed by a milk chocolate peanut butter layer and caramelized crisp rice cereal. I suggest splitting this if you want to try it. Despite the sugar coma I currently find myself in, it was worth it. It's probably a good thing it's so inconveniently located, otherwise I'd be tempted to go here daily. It does get pretty busy, and hard to get seats, so if you're looking to sit down on your computer for a bit while enjoying some treats, arrive early. read more

Excellent variety of sweets. The peanut butter cookie here is sugary, crumbly, peanut-y and delicious. Chocolate chip cookies are amazing. The red velvet cake is so-so, the frosting is made from cinnamon-flavored buttercream, which is an interesting interpretation of the more traditional cream cheese, sugary frosting. There're also quiche, a variety of cookies, coffee cake and cupcakes (little cuties that are smaller than the usual cupcakes) sold here. One of their specialty cakes is the coca cola bundt cake, which is a dark chocolate-colored bundt cake. Inside is a nice place to sit, have a cuppa joe and a slice of something baked while catching up with your weekend readings. read more

Super hipster bake shop in Red Hook. Got the chocolate burbon pecan pie and a slice of banana chocolate chip loaf cake. Both are super good. Love the pecan pie more but I could just imagine how good the banana chocolate cake would've been if it's fresh hot out. A must-try spot if you are in the area plus free wifi and lots of comfy seatings. read more

4.5 stars for HOT CHOCOLATE. Hot chocolate tastes better than at Jacques Torres. It was just sweet enough and heated with care. It comes with a homemade marshmallow! Got a salty brownie because there was a small label that said it was featured on Best Thing I've Ever Ate. It reminded me of fleur de sel caramel (which i love), but very sweet (almost too sweet) and too gooey sticky. 3 stars for this brownie. read more

As I'm typing this I have a mouth full of my bday cake that I just received today from Baked. I ordered the sweet & salty cake....OMG, moist & chocolatety with just a hint of salt. My only complaint is that since I'm a chocoholic, I would've preferred more chocolate in my cake, but that's just my inner fatass who can't get enough of anything edible complaining. I ordered my cake Wednesday with no problems, the staff was nice and made sure they got all of my info correct. Cake looks just as good as it tastes. OK, review over. Going back for another piece. Baked, is a place I wanted to go to, because of Yelp! I love to discover new places, after reading review of such places on Yelp!.....Baked is on a Street, along with Divish Bars, Vintage Clothing, Furniture shops etc.... I feel Baked fits in with the rest of the storefronts in the area........ They offer alot of baked goods, alot of them are pré-packaged (granola, brownies), and I am thinking that the pre packaged goods, are great gift idea's.....There are very easy to ship....... I wanted to try their Red Velvet Cake.. I remember the other reviews, mentioned, that they do not use the typical cream cheese frosting. That's an interesting choice..... They didn't have any RVC when I was there... So, I got cupcakes. I have to say, I like their version of RV.. It didn't feel as heavy. I like théir frosting, with 2 redhots on top. I dont know yet, if I like their version of RV better than, the cream cheese variety... I also got the sweet and salty cupcake... When, I was taking the cupcakes out of the plastic package, a tiny bit of the sweet/salty frosting got on my finger.... I like the combination...... I gotta a few more CC, but I still havent tried them.... One thing, I did notice is, they did not have a very large variety today. When I was looking at the pictures posted, I thought I would also see that today...Mabwey because it's a Saturday?? The service was friendly....THeir prices are reasonable. If you are looking for a wedding cake bakery. Look no further. We were most excited about the cake tasting process and Baked did not let us down. You get to taste about 12 different flavors of cake and get to bring home what you don't finish for $25. I wish we were getting married every week for that! Our wedding was small so we went with two dozen cupcakes and a 6" cake for variety. The cake was elegantly simple with a spackled look. No fondant here! We topped everything off with salted caramel brownies for our welcome bags and got so many compliments from everyone! Jordan was a pleasure to work with and I would highly recommend you come here if you're looking for a simple delicious cake. read more
