On a cold rainy day running errands in the fringe of Red Hook huddled under a shared umbrella (I forgot mine), my friend ushers me into Baked with promises of malted hot chocolate. Malted! She knows my weaknesses well! Together we order a croissant, apple turnover, and malted and spicy hot chocolate - I wait for our goods while she makes sad eyes at daytime laptoppers spread out in what will soon be our seats. But the fatal flaw soon revels itself; carrying two identical looking hot chocolates I sip each to know which to one to hand over... I sip again... and hand over what may or may not have been the spicy one.... we'll never be sure... the cool croissant and sweetless turnover do not remedy the situation. Nonetheless we find ourselves engrossed in baited discussions on the history of war and upcoming weddings in the comfortable banquet as the other customers begin to eye our seats. read more

I have a friend who claims to see nothing but graphic designers disguised as lumberjacks at Baked (his words, not mine). I've never noticed, mainly because every time I've stepped foot into this sweet place, I've been too distracted by its tempting goods to pay much attention to anything else. The homemade oreos? Be still my heart. The Red Hook "Red Hot" cake? Dear God. The sweet and salty brownie? I might cry from happiness. Sidenote: If Baked ever closes (the horror!), I will probably lose 10 pounds. We live in the neighborhood and have been going to Baked since we moved here. Their stuff is really good but for the last 6-8 months the freshly baked goods look under cooked. No golden brown pastries anymore!? We've had to put some of the stuff in our own oven to crisp it up a bit before eating. I'm mostly giving this place 1 star because their staff is sooooo boring and rude. Would it kill them to say " good morning" or even just a "hi". Fear and food usually don't go together for me. The journey to Baked in Red Hook definitely took me out of my comfort zone. We took the subway further than I've ever been, with fantastic views of Manhattan in the far distance when we finally got off. Once we were on the street, we found the bus stop and our adventure really began. The elements around the stop and station were a little frightening. Something out of The Wire. Baked exists on gentrified block in the middle of a fairly rundown section of Brooklyn. When you're though the door, you're transported to a little slice of heaven. That is, if heaven for you is a bakery filled with everything sweet. I can't eat the choclate delights, but I did watch my wife's eyes dance with pleasure as she tasted every bite. I had a really good cookie. The atmosphere is relaxing. I figure, people who go here stay a while. There's no reason to go back outside. Ever. Unless, you're worried that the sun might go down with you inside. And, they might run out of food. The bus ride back was delayed because the bus didn't show up. The people we asked about it seemed to think the bus had changed routes recently. They didn't know where to go. My iPhone was no help. Finally, a bus came after we wandered up and down the street. When we made it back to the station, I noticed the exact same people around the station. These were corner boys. There were drugs being sold without a doubt. We scrabbled up to the platform quickly. I ordered a custom 8" vanilla buttercream frosting with chocolate cake for my best friend Kim last week. Everything went smoothly and the idea was to try to get it as close to Publix style as she could remember. She was definitely impressed. The only thing was the frosting was just a tad bit too sugary. I really liked the cupcakes more because they didn't taste as sugary and more airy. I was really hoping for that same effect on the cake we ordered. I will definitely return here! I had these goodies awhile ago but never got a chance to comment on them. So, I got a chance to purchase a few more treats today after meeting up with my husband for lunch. I love the new variety of cakes- Hummingbird (maybe for mine), Aunt Sassy's Pistachio Surprise (mental note for my husband's b-day), cola-cola bundt, Caramel Apple, Hazelnut kiss, green tea, the grasshopper, Red Hook Red Hot, lemon drop..oh my..I can go on. And they even make wedding cakes now! I had the red hook red hot and classic chocolate cupcake. My husband had their chocolate cloud cookie and a classic chocolate & vanilla whoopie pie. The cupcakes were a good size, a good portion not too little or too big. I definitely tasted the valrhona cocoa in the red velvet cake. The cinnamon buttecream add a nice touch to the cupcake. It also goes great with a cup of joe. The vanilla cake with chocolate buttercream was a great treat to wrap up my day. My husband loves their whoopie pie. It's pretty much similiar to an icecream cookie sandwich except replace it with chocolate cake and the whip cream in the middle. Thanks to Han for the cupcake compliment!! While it's true that when the occasion calls for it (read: any ol' Tuesday night), i always bake my own cupcakes, i thought i would share with everyone my favorite cupcakery in the city. For those of us who don't live in Red Hook, Baked is a little bit of a trek. You have to take the F/G to Smith/9th Street and then hop on the B77 bus (on the same side as the subway exit). Knowing that there are excellent cupcakes and other original dessert concoctions on the horizon, the trip is well worth it. The space at Baked is clean, open, and mellow with lots of personality. This last characteristic is apparent in their cakes and desserts, which are mainly modernized versions of old-fashioned American classics (for example, their icebox cake, which was recently featured in Food & Wine, is an elegant tower of homemade chocolate wafers, layered with chocolate pastry cream and topped with whipped cream). But yes - the cupcakes. First, i need to say that i am not a fan of the copycat cupcakes all over the city - dry cake overcompensated by a glob of gritty, overly sweet buttercream. That being said, i'm also not a fan of Swiss meringue buttercream that tastes like whipped butter and leaves an oily coating down your throat. The cupcakes at Baked have a moist, tender cake and a buttercream that tastes like a mix between a Swiss meringue and a classic American buttercream - the flavors are delicate, the texture smooth and the finish clean. Next time i go to Baked i'm going to make a day of it - there's an unharried vibe there that reminds me of certain cafes in San Francisco. They also serve lunch. And Gorilla coffee. P.S. I've had the Baked cookbook for a couple years now and I've made a couple things in it with mixed results. I'm a competent baker so I was curious to see how their baked goods stood up to what I made, what I've had from other bakeries and what I've made from other baking books. Call it sacrilege if you like, but THE HYPE MACHINE IS IN FULL EFFECT WITH BAKED. Maybe it's because they've got this hipster meets back-country lodge thing going on. Maybe it's because they've got clever treatments of standard desserts. Maybe it's because they've got a pretty cookbook that incorporates nifty design elements, which makes it nice to look at. Whatever it is, they've got something that's getting people to head out there, but I just don't think it's worth schlepping out to Red Hook for their so-so brownies. Yea, I said it, bitches. I ordered a cake from Baked for my 30th birthday after seeing all the great reviews and finding several of my friends had heard of the bakery--and heard good things. Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed in my cake (10" Citrus Passion Fruit, $50). The website describes it with butter cream frosting, which is not the case--the frosting is whipped and airy, not sweet and buttery. The description on their site should really be improved. The decoration on my cake was also not as advertised, though I didn't have time to fight that while picking the cake up. The passion fruit curd, I will admit, was lovely. I also had a sub par experience with their customer service when I originally inquired about ordering (note, they do not take online orders or orders by email), which was just snobbish and rushed. It told me to review information on the cakes page to pick my order (which I had already clearly stated in the email), and told me that I should also look there on my own to find the answer to my only question (do they deliver ? I found eventually on my own that they do deliver, though it's pricey at $40 to Manhattan). The chocolate chip cookies. How do they make them SOOO GOOOOD??? It's like, the most perfect blend of sugar, butter, flour, and chocolate in a thing you can eat - on earth! They're beautifully moist but nicely crisped at the bottom and edges. I worked at the gallery next door and ate one almost everyday I went to work. No, we should not discuss my weight. Went to Baked for the first time today for a wedding tasting. I first have to say that the icing at Baked is very light and fresh, definitely a lot easier to stomach than a lot of other icings in New York. Atmosphere and staff are both great, so let's talk about product. We tried the following flavors and loved them all. I am so lucky that *this* is in my neighborhood! And I'm trying my best not to have my patronage reflected on my person, other than in the Baked tee I might wear (well, and perhaps just a bit in the hips, but I am a curvy Italian girl in an Irish farm girl's skin). The staff here is super, the music is always pleasant. I have only gone here once w/ the intent of just chilling out, but I love that it's a place I congregate w/ my fellow AM commuters and we admire the beautiful case of baked goods. What's good? Everything. From the coffee (and they will make it exactly like you want) to the gooey yummy confections, it's a perfect place to give your dollars to. I have to say, their yogurt parfait is ample and full of ripe (not mushy or moldy!) berries and some terrific granola. I also adore the pistachio cherry biscotti. And I make my own biscotti (see the Italian bit above), and this gets my stamp of approval. And my husband says the Baked bar kicks big fat ass. One day I'm going to go all out for that oatmeal cookie. Til then, I'll keep enjoying my morning ritual here. For those who come seeking savory vs. sweet, there are lunchtime paninis and sandwiches. Sweets for the more refined palate. Their approach to cake seems to be less is more, in regards to sugar anyway. Nothing's ever cloyingly sweet so as not to overpower the delicate flavors, and the frosting leans creamy rather than sugary. Cupcakes are always fresh rather than slightly crunchy around the edges because they've been sitting there for a while. Some of the highlights: red velvet, sweet and salty (with CARAMEL!), oreo layer cake, malted chocolate (melts in your mouth), diner double dark, green tea. I'm not a fan of their brownies, though, as they are too sweet and too much on the fudgey side for my tastes. Otherwise, though? Well worth the trek. read more

This place is just really good. I went recently and had the millionaire bar and the coffee cake and both were delicious. They were clearly fresh and thankfully not dry, which sometimes can be a problem with desserts. The space was quaint and busy enough, but not overcrowded as I was able to find a good place to sit. The service was very friendly and the vibe was nice. The one small downside I suppose is it's a little bit of a walk from public transportation. I had a car though so this was a non-issue for me. This place is the master of the sweet + savory flavor combination. Their chocolate layer cake with salted caramel buttercream was so incredible I wanted to push my friend off her chair and run away with the slice that we were supposed to be sharing. Super moist cake with light, caramely flavor and sea salt crunchies on the top. Yum. Their sweet & salty brownie was equally decadent and amazing-- how they managed to keep the salt inside crunchy despite being embedded in the dense, moisturous environment of brownie heaven is truly beyond me. Not sure why they serve Stumptown - a unique local bakery like this deserves equally unique coffee & espresso from a local roaster. You've got to love bakeries that do just what they say, bake, well. So looking online beforehand, I saw the hunting theme in the space and was expecting the Marlow & Sons / Freemans look. Yet arriving you get a down to earth cafe feel with cabinets of baked goods that make you're mouth water when you start looking and reading. Bright and airy space, the staff were mellow and friendly at every point. This was completely unpretentious. And the baked goods, gawd damn, I had the Cherry Cheesecake. Cherries swirled all through, all over the top, honestly this is the best cherry anything I have had in a long time. We looked far and wide for a wedding cake that was not only going to be lovely, but delicious. We wanted a cake that even the cake-haters would like. This meant, primarily, no fondant. After our initial baker choice disappeared, we found ourselves a bit short on time and our 10-10-10 wedding date nearer than we would have liked. Renato agreed to squeeze us into their baking schedule for that immensely popular weekend. We tasted all of their amazing creative cupcakes, but in the end went with a vanilla/vanilla tier cake and a chocolate/vanilla sheet cake. The tier cake was decorated with white chocolate cigarettes around each level, very simple and elegant. EVERYONE loved the cake, we have been eating our way through the top tier, and the price was $500 less than anyone else quoted. WIN. read more

Not many things will make me travel to the most inconvenient neighborhood of Brooklyn*, but Baked's brownies can 'cause they are absolutely impossible to resist. Out of the three we tried--the spicy, peanut butter bar, and bourbon pecan--I honestly can't pick a favorite. (Although the pecans smelled like heaven.) I had been wanting to come here for a long time, and only for one thing: the spicy chocolate brownie. For some reason, nothing else appealed to me, but I love brownies, and I love the marriage of spices and chocolate more than any other combination. First off, it was a real schlep to get here. Even if one lives in Brooklyn, they're subject to having to either wait for the B77 bus or, like me, walk from Smith and 9th Streets to the bakery. It's very cute inside, but the girl behind the counter was quite out of it, and looked ready to smash her head into the cash register. Regardless, it seems to be a haven for small children and coffee-sipping intellectuals, so if you're like me I would get what you need and get out of there. So far I seem to have been speaking negatively, but the reason for the four stars is the brownie itself. Not only did I manage an END PIECE (the best part), but I was amazed at how homemade it tasted, how it was able to epitomize my ideal chewy yet soft chocolate morsel. The spice added a great punch at the end too, which prompted me to eat the brownie faster and faster to get that same tingly sensation at the back of my throat. Get the brownie, damn you! read more

I decided to stop by this place on a recent visit to Ikea. I had seen the episode of Throwdown with Iron Chef Bobby Flay in which Baked founders Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito battle it out over a banana nut pie, and was left unsatisfied by Flays quite obvious hack of a victory. Unforunately, the banana nut pie isn't on offer this time of the year. I appreciated their acknowledgement of seasonal cuisine, and settled for a quiche of the day and chai latte, topped off with a slice of pumpkin pie. Wow. I love quiche, and have sampled many since my sudden birth. This one topped the list. Definitely the best quiche I have ever had in my life. Exquisite mix of vegetables and cheese. The crust was perfectly crumbly, yet firm enough to hold the whole piece together. Perfectly salted and seasoned. The pumpkin pie was exquisite. Fluffy and light in texture, not too creamy, with a smooth pumpkin taste that's hard to find even during the winter squash peak period of October/November. The only reason I give this place 4 stars is because I don't feel I have sampled enough of the menu to posess adequate overview of the Baked experience. I of course, look forward to expanding my knowledge and appreciation of this truly one of a kind establishment in the near future. A side note: During my limited involvement with yelp, the various reviews I have written have brought me to realize that when it comes to preparing food, less is more. I commend Baked on it's reductionist approach to baking and food preparation. Far from the excessive strategies of top gourmet chefs, whose verbose recipes have come to disgust me, I am glad I can find solitude in Baked, and the neutral pleasure of taste known to everyone, a common flavor they have come to perfect through their masterful understanding of flavor function over form. read more

Ever accidentally drag the man in your life through the projects in search of a brownie? No? THEN YOU'VE NEVER REALLY LIVED! I didn't really do my homework about Baked and figured any old street would be fine to cut down from court street in cobble hill, but ohhh was I wrong. Word to the wise: Don't walk too far down court street and then cut over into Red Hook. If you see the expressway, TURN AROUND AND RUN BACK HOME. I really thought I was going to get the man that I love killed for a brownie. A brownie! Thankfully, we finally made it into red hook and found the adorable Van Brunt Street, which featured lots of cute jewelry shops and restaurants, as well a notable art community. So the brownie. It was pretty darn good. Good enough to walk through the projects for? Probably not. The concept of a sweet and salty brownie is brilliant, but one I could definitely manage to recreate in my own kitchen. So kudos for them for being so innovative, and if you live nearby and can visit easily, you should. But if you're from out of town, it might not be quite worth the hike. Baked has my heart. Period. Cupcakes? Delicious. I've tried like every flavor. Seriously. Red hot red velvet? Yum! (The spicy cinnamon flavor is surprisingly good) Sweet and salty? Yum! Vanilla? Yum! The cakes are delicious - I tried a slice of the coconut lemon. Cookies are good, marshmallows are good, smores bar is good, apricot rosemary bar is good. Iced coffee is delicious, and $0.50 refills!!! With free wifi, it's totally worth the trek out to Red Hook. You know, if you're a shameless, job hunting bum like I am. Their sandwiches and salads (from Luscious) are decent, as well. The Luscious salad is yummy, I must say, and the roast beef sandwich was pretty good. $10 min on credit cards. read more

I know they talk about the desserts but I honestly only wanted an espresso when I walked in. So I was curious, but hesitant. The place is super cool and super cute. Long wooden booth type tables line the right side of the place. They seem to carry good coffee, however when I watched the espresso operation, I have to say I was hoping for more. They pulled a long shot. Perhaps I should have asked for ristretto, but it was way to watery and yada yada. The color looked good, it wasn't burnt or anything, but overall I wasn't impressed by the shot. Still the place is cute, and I'd come back next time i'm in Red Hook. read more

Starting with the homey décor and moving right along to the friendly staff and clever consumables Baked is the sort of place where 'cool' or 'hip' is not so much the trend as is humble and happy - each simple-yet-delicious baked good something one could probably make at home (or from the Baked cookbook) but here made with top-quality ingredients and ready on demand at prices that seem criminally low considering the quality. From a buttery scone to one of the moistest cupcakes I've found in New York and then onward to the dense coffee cake it was only a slightly dry, biscuit-esque, cinnamon roll that failed to wow amongst the more 'common' items but moving onto two unique bars the bbakers redeemed themselves (and then some) with a warm pecan bar every bit as good as the malted chocolate pecan pie at Four & Twenty Blackbirds plus the Millionaire Bar - one of those rare instances where something is so rich that sharing is not just an option, but a requirement...unless you instead want to save some for later, which seemed much more logical to me. read more
