Bad Bean Baja Grill was an excellent dinner choice! I had my heart set on a pair of fish tacos and was supremely surprised at the taco special, Roasted Pork Belly with tazikis sauce and cucumbers! It was a winner!!! I also had a mahi-mahi taco, but the pork belly won hands down. The kids menu was also terrific for $6. The kids each had chicken burritos with a side of rice and beans (applesauce was another side option) and a drink. Although the evening started with a 15-minute wait, every moment was worth it. Their customer service was outstanding! From the bartenders, host staff, to Brooke, our server. She took extra care to comp our queso and bring extra salsa and chips since we waited a few extra minutes for her to take our order. I'll start by saying that the pork belly taco was REALLY good and the service was great. We were a party of 6 that came prime dinner time and only waited 20 minutes. I also ordered a blackened fish taco - it was ok - I added lime, salsa and hot sauce with different bites but it still didn't have much flavor. Ordered the guacamole as an appetizer but there was nothing fresh about it - it was also only OK. The taste and consistency of it seemed like it was scooped out of tub. They were so right. Things start off with a selection of salsa, always a good sign. The menu looks relatively short, but it's due to the compact organization. What looks like one option for "Meat Tacos" hides three meats when read closer. Go on, order a selection of tacos. These tacos clearly have meat that was slaved over for hours before the place opened, slow cooked to perfection. It's just a quick assembly away from your taste buds. Tacos are $3.50/$4 each, which considering the premium ingredients makes them a steal. When measured on a dollar per quality basis, this may be the best deal on the entire beach. This place is bangin'! Absolutely amazing! Large portions for a cheap price! The nachos were fresh and straight fire! Only complaint... they done forgot my shredded chicken. However, still smacked. Didn't even need the shredded chicken. 10/10 recommend you to stop by. Warning doe, the small women's toilet might not flush the first time after a massive $h!t. Damn great food. Every time I'm in the area, I head straight there. Order a 24oz Tecate or Modelo, then go through a series of taco flights. The kitchen manager, Matt, would do off-menu taco varieties. I just appreciate that effort. The staff is extremely nice and welcoming. The lunch menu is different from the dinner menu, so you'll definitely see a variety from a humble Mexicali restaurant. I totally support them, and I recommend this hidden gem to anyone. Maybe I came in on a bad night but I am not a fan of this restaraunt. The first thing I noticed is that they charge you $1.99 after the first basket of chips. Considering we ordered queso for $4.99 and the "basket" of chips are incredibly small I think they could stand to give you some more chips with your queso especially at $4.99 for an incredibly small bowl. I ordered the chicken quesadilla which had no flavor whatsoever. It was like eating a piece of cardboard, I've had better quesadillas that I've made at home myself. I had one piece and I was done. My husband had the California burrito with chicken and it was OK. Maybe 3 out of 5 stars. It certainly had more flavor than the quesadilla. All in all I think this place is overpriced and overrated. We needed a break from seafood and barbecue, so decided to try some Mexican. BBBG looked interesting, based on some Yelp photos and a menu review. We started with two pretty decent salsas. There was a green, tomatillo based version with a lot of onion. It was billed as having roasted poblano, but none was really evident. The red had good flavor of habanero with good sweet/tart balance and nice heat. The chips served with these were very salty. I ordered an appetizer of albondigas which our server mispronounced every time he said it. These were made of pork and had a tender texture. They rested on a bed of plastic pellet rice (read Uncle Ben's or similar) and topped with a sauce that was supposed to have some chipotle that was also absent. What was present though was cumin, lots and lots of cumin. I rate the meat balls as 3 stars but they would jump to 4-1/2 without the over use of cumin. A little would be OK, but here we have an amateur in the kitchen who thinks that cumin makes it Mexican and a lot of cumin makes it a lot Mexican. Ms T ordered grilled chicken in a wrap with avocado and bacon. Heavy handed use of bacon masked all other flavors in the filling. This is another example of the over use of one ingredient. You might as well just order bacon and drop the pretense that it is something else. Bacon is good, we all agree, but when included in dishes we should try to allow something else to be tasted. Ms T picked out at least a half cup of bacon and still had plenty. The wrapper that makes this a wrap was herb and garlic and garlic and garlic and garlic. I could smell it from across the table and asked her where the garlic was coming from. She assumed it was the filling but quickly figured out it was the flour tortilla. She removed the offending wrapper and ate the filling. There were fries with this. Perhaps these are what are known around here as beach fries. We have something similar a couple of times. These are also heavily seasoned with garlic. I ordered a nightly special of Grilled Meat Loaf. So that gives you an idea of the creativity being attempted here. It's not often you can choose meatloaf in a Mexican place. It was served on grits which were surrounded by pumpkin seed mole. I liked the coarse style grits. The mole was richly flavored, but also overloaded with cumin and garlic. It was very, very salty and could not be enjoyed without the neutral grits to temper them. You had to eat the meatloaf, grits and mole all together. The meatloaf was not highly seasoned, but was grilled well, forming a good crust. This dish was OK but someone needs to relieve the chef of his drums of ground cumin and crates of garlic. There is creativity at Bad Bean and that is not a bad thing. The ideas are good. It is nice to have some Mexican influenced options that are not so predictable. There is however, no finesse in the dishes we had. With the introduction of the salsas I thought this was promising but was disappointed with the clumsy main fare. Weak three stars. Three stars means A-OK but this was Just-OK. read more

Totally solid lunch/dinner option. They have margaritas and a tiny, but crafty, beer list. Guac and salsa verde are good, the chipotle-smoky red salsa (I think it is the "medium" one) is pretty great. There are several vegetarian options (various permutations of tortilla+bean+cheese+rice+guac+lettuce+salsa+etc.), and I opted for the tostada. It was fresh, filling, affordable and I would eat it again any time. In particular, rice and black beans, which typically fall into "humble filler" mode, were well-seasoned and savory here. I had two shrimp tacos and enjoyed them...next time I'll order three, though. I think it was more because I was hungry and not due to lack of food. My son wanted a shrimp taco and while lots of folks have fish tacos on the menu not many had shrimp tacos. Bad Bean does and since we had been to the bean in corolla, we figured we would give the cantina a shot. Food was good, fish tacos were tasty, the cantina has some nice salsas we tried, though be warned, the medium is plenty hot. The restaurant is not particularly easy to find, it is in the corner of a strip mall that has no other restaurants and is not easily seen coming from the north. It is the site of the old Coastal Cactus. Hopefully they will have enough business to keep running, because it is a good place to eat. Last year at this time we pulled into OBX pretty late due to a terrible accident on the bridge and after sitting in traffic for hours we barely made it to the restaurant with just minutes to spare before closing time. When we went in we were pretty sure we would be told they were closing but they were very accommodating and replied that of course we will serve you. What great customer service and they even packed extra tortilla chips for us to take back to our vacation rental! Food was great also. So good. Between the two of us we had 6 tacos. Tried the pork barbacoa, beef brisket, sheeps head (daily fish special), tofu, shrimp, and pork belly. Out of the 6, the pork belly and beef brisket were the best - beef brisket was a good amount of spicy. The medium salsa was super fresh and had a nice smokey flavor to it. Nice atmosphere (don't be fooled by location) - relaxed and clean. Great service! Our drinks were never empty, waitress was friendly and helpful, manager was actively helping out all servers and talking to guests. The food was amazing...simply amazing. They have a small menu...which is NOT a bad thing it usually means they use more fresh ingredients over frozen. This was definitely true in this case. EVERYTHING was fresh and delicious. Came in with a small group while vacationing. When we first parked and noticed the location (mediocre strip mall) we were kind of confused with all the great reviews. Until we had our meal... Like someone said earlier, it's clean, friendly and has simple decor inside. The pork belly tacos are amazing. My friend and I were the only ones who got the pork belly and we devoured them. We were kind of upset we only ordered one each. I had another carnita taco and a side of guacamole. All of the food was delicious. We weren't even that hungry (or so we thought), but the entire group ate everything that was given to them. My friend and I had the daily (peach) Margarita. It was sadly, not even close to being as good as the food. Would not order that again, but it's not enough of a negative to take a star away. Excellent stop on the local "taco night" scene. I visited on Thursday, April 11th at 6:00 PM, opted for the $2 chicken and beef tacos, and dined at the bar. Though the tacos were not exactly enormous, the taste was superb. Bottles of Corona were also only $2, and my friendly bartender bought one round for me. Why not five stars? Unfortunately, the flip side of inexpensive drink/food specials brings a certain element to the forefront. In this case, it was a group of young men drinking their $2 Coronas in front of the establishment and ridiculing total strangers, like me, entering the restaurant. This is hands down my favorite place to eat in the Outer Banks. We discovered it last year on the last day of our vacation. I had the fish tacos and it wad the freshest, most delicious taco I've ever eaten. I've compared every taco to it the whole year and nothing measures up. Back there today and still the same. Wow! This spot is great, it was still considered the end of off season when we went, so it was almost empty when we got in. The server was quick and friendly. Although it was still lunchtime, they prepared a meal from the dinner menu for me at my request! The food: Best chips and salsa I ever had, the chips alone are perfect in themselves, almost with a cornbread taste to them. Get the medium salsa, you don't want intense heat getting in the way of these great tasting tomatoes. I got a meatball chipotle quesadilla, excellent. For drinks we ordered one of the specials, a jalapeño peach margarita and a mojito. Both were good but the margarita was amazing. We started out with an appetizer, the grilled steak and roasted pepper taquitos. It was a small dish with 3 crunchy delicious fries taquitos, very tasty. For lunch we both ordered tacos. I had one pork belly taco and one mahi mahi taco. Very good, and fresh. We had nothing but good things to say about this place.
