We got to watch some good flirtation between a table of 10 college women and another table of 8-9 male college golfers! It has been far too long since we visited Goombay's. We went in to see if their calamari and burgers were still what we remembered and ended up with items from the daily list of lunch specials. Ms T chose the flounder sandwich, which was nicely done with shredded lettuce and tomato with a very good tangy, creamy sauce. I had an oyster basket with slaw. I am not an oyster expert, but these were sweet, mild and clearly fresh. They were coated lightly and fried perfectly so they were tender. Goombay's serves 50 caliber French fries which are not always well prepared, but in this case, they were excellent, creamy inside, not dry or half burned. They have a little of the ubiquitous potato varnish as a coating, but it is light. I ate way more than I needed. The slaw was also a good sweet/tart version, which is my choice. All in all, this was a great lunch at an old favorite place. I left wondering why it took us so long to get back. Hopefully we can work them into our busy lunch schedule again when we return in the Fall. read more

While I understand needing a whole party to be there when you arrive at a restaurant. (Especially during busy times) I do not understand, me telling the waitress my daughter was in the car trying to gather herself after crying. She showed zero remorse and refused to seat us until the WHOLE party was there. We had 4/5 people there. She could clearly see my daughter in the car. I have been treated so rudely in the OBX restaurants and I guarantee our "go to" places would NEVER have done that! Mind you......it wasn't even 4pm and there were no other patrons in the dining room!!!! They advised they were changing shifts so that was the issue......um no. It's called rude. Tender tuna grill-kissed to perfection? Yes, please! If Yelp would allow us to give a 4 1/2 I would. There are so many menu items we wanted to try, but settled in on the Goombay's Tuna Reuben and the Goombay's Grille. The tuna on each of these sandwiches was tender perfection. We typically skip the fries, but these beauties were crisp and seasoned well. We opted to sit outside on the cute outdoor patio since we had our four-legged friend with us. Staff were very friendly and the bar and restaurant were wonderfully decked out for Halloween. We'll definitely be back to work our way through some more of the interesting food offerings. It was okay. Wait was longer than they said. I got the Jazzy Chicken. The chicken was fried amazing and the coconut good too! However the pineapple cream sauce was sooooo bland and had zero flavor. It was all over everything so it kind of ruined it. There was way too much. My husband and kids enjoyed their meals but they were average. Drinks were really sweet. I also keep thinking about the crust around the bathroom sink handles and I've returned from vacation and washed my own personal sink every time I think of the sink because it freaked me out. Goombays is a must when we are here. The crab dip with the baked pita chips is heaven in a hot ceramic dish! Gator bites are tasty too! Watch the jalepeno cheese poppers. chicken quesadilla was great. The wedge salad (zI got lotsa bleu cheese dressing. This by itself is a meal! Candied nuts and dried cranberries are a wonderful touch! What can I say but Isabella was TERRIFIC!!! I have never met someone with that cheerfulness, perkyness & just happy to be where she is! We found Goombays on the map, during off season, while looking for some fresh seafood to eat. Super cute place. We were greeted promptly and sat. The menu had some fun options. We got a sampler, tuna tacos and fish and chips. Everything was great. We most enjoyed the tuna tacos, fun, flavorful and balanced. I could've used more heat in the crab balls claiming to be the hottest on the island but I understand hotter might be a turnoff for sensitive pallets. My wife and I had the pleasure of eating a wonderful dinner at Goombays last evening. They do not take reservations but the wait was only 15 minutes, time we killed with the signature Goombay Smash! We had two of the chef's specials. The first was herb seared rock fish and shrimp served on a bed of penne pasta in a roasted red pepper, asparagus, parmigiana cream sauce. It was outstanding! The second dish was Jerked seared Wahoo with a sweet and spicy coconut and crab cream sauce. It was over the top great. The service was equal to the food. The staff is well trained and each level works as a team to make your dining experience great. This is the quintessential beach restaurant but the deft hand in the kitchen could be in any fine dinning venue anywhere! Go and enjoy your meal read more

Goombays is a cute Caribbean restaurant located on Beach road in a residential area close to First Street. The bar area has stools for close to 20 but there is additional chairs and standing room around the perimeter. It does get busy at times during peak season but the bartenders are good at hustling and working to ensure nobody goes thirsty. Additionally, drinks can be ordered and consumed outside on the patio, which consists of a small concrete area just outside the front entrance. The patio is furnished with picnic tables and benches. The full menu is available at the bar. Also, the bar has the steamer for seafood and vegetables. Customers can order steamed food even after the kitchen has closed. The restaurant section has table seating (no booths) and has a fun cool Caribbean beach vibe thanks to custom decorations. The menu includes appetizers, salads, and burgers, much like what you would expect at most beach restaurants. There are entrees dishes too including pasta, shrimp, chicken, pork, ribs, and so on. Goombays also offers specialty dishes which differ slightly for lunch and dinner. Our favorite lunch dishes include shrimp quesadillas, the tuna reuben, steamed vegetables, or any of their salads. For dinner we get tuna tacos or often one of their grilled fish specials. The staff is attentive and friendly. My family and I came to enjoy an amazing meal after being on the beach all day. The atmosphere was great and our waiter was awesome. The food.... Not so much, can't lie my fish and chips were buns my coleslaw was dry never had that experience in my life. My oldest daughter got the catch of the day and wow it just was way overcooked and the portion was so small. The only person that enjoyed their meal was my youngest daughter which was butter noodles. Did you know that finding a pea crab in your oysters is a sign of good luck? We certainly didn't when that teensy weensy little bugger started crawling around those shells!! But the server informed us that it's not only a lucky find, and a delicacy, but it's a sign that the oysters are super fresh and healthy since pea crabs thrive in quality waters!! It was a bit unappetizing, but my bff said the oysters were delish! Side note: the presentation could have been better, the kitchen could up their game a bit! That being said, as a landlubber, I opted for the cheeseburger! It was humongous and cooked well! The fries were fresh and hot! We were pleased with the service, the vibe was fun, bright and beachy, pretty much what you'd expect in OBX, the pricing was ok (a tad high). We came in for a late dinner, and were pleasantly accommodated. The hostess was friendly as well! The bar area was hopping and the music wasn't too loud, but a cool playlist could be heard in the undertone of clattering dishes. We had to wait for a table about half an hour. We sat at the bar and had a drink. Last night of being in town and I ordered crab and shrimp. The food was really good but I felt like the waiter was trying to shove us out the door. And then the waitress besides us was doing the same thing. They told us very curtly that my identified service dog was not allowed in the restaurant due to "North Carolina regulations". My handicapped mom & I went to an early dinner/late lunch at Goombays Grille & Raw Bar with my small service dog; upon entering, we were immediately antagonized & interrogated by a male staff/manager?/owner? there; he insinuated my dog couldn't be a service dog bc i was carrying her???... asked what tasks she performs, & when informed she performs alerting & interrupting tasks; he demanded more of an explanation of her work tasks; I was a broken record & continued to repeat the same; he still wouldn't take that as an answer, & while i informed him i was not required to tell him my disability, I was ultimately forced to; i also was pushed to show my registration for her (another ADA violation!); which he claimed wasn't even "legal"? We were eventually allowed to be seated, but at that point, I wasn't even able consider eating at that point; my mom, being witness to the discrimination & interrogation, also could not eat there at that point either! This man also admitted to doing the same/similar to others for similar reasons as me (which is supported by reviews for this restaurant on VARIOUS sites!!!), so I am apparently not the only one he has attacked & judged by my looks, my service dog's looks, my lack of a physically apparent disability, etc. I have never been treated this way EVER! Please do not support this restaurant & discrimination! Deliciousness - 4/5 Happiness - 5/5 This place has it all - my favorite place on the beach (technically across the street from it, but that's just quibbling!). Great drinks, great food, and great atmosphere. The drinks were a lot of fun and most come with a toy. That entertained both the adults and the kids and kept us mellow through the long wait to eat (get here early). That said, they are a bit pricey so watch your tab! We started out with the stuffed jalapenos, which were unique and tasty. They gave large unbreaded (hooray) peppers stuffed with house made pimento cream cheese. That is a fun flavor profile. We also got the wings with two sauces (hot sauce combined with a citrus glaze) and they were bursting with flavor. There were a good number of wings and the flavor profile was a unlike anything I've had anywhere else.... and delicious. The steamed food was amazing - steamed fresh before your eyes at the bar. It was awesome to watch billowing steam come out and the wonderful smell of seafood fill the restaurant. The star of the entrees was the cabarete shrimp, which came in a mouth watering sauce and a loaf of bread to soak it all up. My brother devoured it gleefully. My wife loved the curry chicken, which introduced a lot of fun new ingredients to a curry dish such as bananas and raisins. And it looked gorgeous too. The kids meals were all warmly received (particularly the burger). I will admit that the ahi tuna sandwich was a bit of a letdown as it was overcooked.
