We decided to try Dirty Dick's Crab House in Nags Head because the name definitely caught our attention -- and we are so glad it did! The food was incredibly fresh, delicious, and exceeded our expectations. A special shoutout to Chris, our server, who truly made our experience memorable. He was kind, friendly, welcoming, and such a great conversationalist. Chris made us feel comfortable from the moment we sat down and added such a personal touch to our dining experience. After an entertaining photo op, before you even enter this fun restaurant, we treated wonderfully by our young waiter. I can't recall his name but we received plenty of 'Yes, Ma'am's' from this attentive server. The ambiance is geared for a fun meal experience and it doesn't disappoint! Friends who stayed at our place in April 2025, told us that they ate at Dirty Dick's four times during their one week stay! They loved the food and especially the shrimp. So, after ten years of being here for 12-14 weeks each year we decided we needed to try it. The goofy motif of the place probably put us off trying it earlier. No joke, it looks like a tourist trap. We went for lunch and found it to be very good. It is not the low-end place that it appears to be. We dropped over $50 for a plate of shrimp and a bowl of soup, never-the-less it was good and after all prices are not what they used to be. Ms T ordered a Fried Shrimp platter with fries. The shrimp are the nicest we have had in a while and that is saying something. They were large, fresh, plump and flavorful. Hopefully it is an anomaly, but the shrimp were not quite done. They were acceptable to me, but just. She definitely wanted them cooked just a bit more. Don't misinterpret this. We know that overcooked shrimp is not what you want, but these were nearly translucent. My bowl of crab soup was interesting and a bit surprising. First, it was thick, but not the pasty construction adhesive goo that we were served the previous week at O'Neal's Sea Harvest in Wanchese. This was a good consistency. The surprising thing was that it was sour. This was not expected. The first bite was,,,,"what is this?". The second was, "maybe this is OK?". After that I warmed up to it and liked it a lot. She did not. I would order it again. It tastes like it has an acidic cheese melted in it. They serve good fries, and the coleslaw is acceptable, with more of a sour cream dressing than I like, but none of it went to waste. All-in-all we had very good food, albeit not the cheapest. You get what you pay for, I guess. We can eat essentially the same meal at Shipwrecks for $15-20 less with quality that is close, but I will not rule out a return visit. read more

Shout out to our wonderful waitress Sabrina! She was absolutely amazing! This spot was perfect for our group of 13 adults and 1 kid. Sabrina was attentive and got all our orders right prefect! Our table shared some apps. The oysters were great. My father in law loved the baked oysters. And the coconut shrimp and calamari and gator was fantastic! My main was okay. I should have gotten a smaller fish. The shrimp and grits was a little too much flavor for me. It said creole but it was giving me salsa vibes I would suggest something simpler for a main. A mainstay in the OBX, we always stop in 1x each trip here. While we usually frequent the DD in Avon, we were staying in kitty hawk so we tried the one here in kitty hawk/nags head. Wife loves the shrimp and grits and says the grits are better than most higher priced restaurants in the area....didnt disappoint. Really good place while visiting. We had a late dinner - around 7:15 - and were seated right away when we arrived. It was still pretty busy and most tables were full. Our waitress, Nina, was awesome. She was really hustling to serve all her tables and was very patient and kind as we were new to the place and asked a lot of questions. The market prices were clear and Nina did a great job explaining to us what she'd prefer. The food was really good. I had the catch of the day salmon dish which came with jambalaya and veggies, and while it could've been presented better (maybe the salmon skin side up on top of the jambalaya), the flavor was very good. Fried alligator is excellent I Jewish the batter was lighter so that she could taste more of the alligator the serving size is unreal enough for two. The fried green tomatoes with crab outstanding however the crab and the salad underneath is cold so it kind of cools off the fried green tomatoes immediately flavor unreal. So as I was sitting here I want the general manager and the chef cook come out and show a father and son how to open crabs which was pretty awesome excellent customer service on that end. Ordered 1/2 dozen steamed large blue crabs and 2 ears of corn to go. The corn was 10 out of 10, but the crabs were definitely not all large. They did me dirty. We arrived before the evening rush, and were seated quickly. The restaurant was clean, and the restaurant didn't get too loud even as the crowds came in before we left. Our hostess was super friendly, and walked us through the catch of the day. I ordered the broiled seafood platter, wife ordered the stuffed flounder, and son ordered the steamed crab legs. Our waitress took the time to show him how to crack and open the legs. The food was great, we also started with the crab dip, which we all loved. The complimentary hush puppies were great also. The gift shop sells tons of DD swag, and our fourteen year old son is still laughing at his DD cup. It can be a little pricey, but that's expected in the OBX area. read more

Crab dip sandwich was the best thing here! Their salmon was also a solid dish. The hostess was very nice and came outside to grab us when our table was ready. The waitress was trying her best but she was managing multiple tables which made service a little slow. But not her fault. Multiple things we ordered came out wrong and our waitress was scared to tell the kitchen manager so I'm not really sure what that was about. It seemed like they didn't want to correct our order even though they had got it wrong. The oysters were also very small for the price but still tasted good. Nice place- plenty of seating in side. The food is good- I had the tacos with no cheese they were tasty. The service was good until I asked for no cheese on my taco! She said the cook doesn't like to change his food. He did because I can't have the dairy (she said he was not happy) what was worse one of our party is gluten free- I think that is also why they were not happy. I have been here a few times over the years. This time is was not a good experience. There was no line or waiting. We were a party of 4 adults and 2 children. It took more than 30 minutes to get our main courses after ordering. I always get the Broiled Seafood Platter $39.99. I am not the type to send food back but I SHOULD have this time. It was WAY over broiled. The few scallops there were, were over cooked and stuck to the metal pan. I had to scrape them off the metal plate leaving some stuck to the same. The same with the few shrimp. The smallish catch of the day fish too was stuck to the metal plate. The edges were brown and crispy. The single crab cake was cooked to dryness. If I could give a negative -1 review I would but 1 is the lowest I can go! Most disgusting food we've ever had! Everything was cold and over cooked! Melted butter was so cold it had turned back into a pat of butter! The king crab legs were so over cooked you couldn't even crack them they just bent! Memorial Day weekend, we were definitely glad that they could get us right in without a wait. Our waitress was awesome and great with our kids which we really appreciated. Hubs and I had the soup and it was delicious. Kids food came out quickly but unfortunately ours didn't come out until a good 30-40 minutes later. It was honestly nothing to write home about. I had the stuffed flounder which wasn't actually stuffed. It was flounder with a crab cake on top with sauce. Being right on the ocean, I expected better. The restaurant had a New Orleans spin on every dish but I just didn't see it or taste it. Cajun red beans and rice came as a side dish with everything but it looked like glue. Pretty obvious that they reheat it, mass produce it or reheat it from frozen. It just missed the mark for us. read more
