I also ordered the peppercorn pork belly skewers, and they were well worth the price of admission ($7.50, I think). Tender pork belly chunks with a nice peppery but slightly sweet sauce, service on a bed of rice with some carrot strips and greens thrown into the mix. Service was cool...15 minutes from start to finish. I just walked in an ordered and the lady at the register was friendly and helpful.

The service was excellent making us feel at home. The salad itself was very good; dressed just right and lots of shredded parm cheese. The extras were spectacular. Crab cake full of crab and spiced just right. The coconut shrimp actually tasted like coconut, with the shrimp fried perfectly, tender and juicy. All future coconut shrimp will be judged from this excellent example.

I have been on a kick to try barbecue at restaurants that are not barbecue joints per se, to see if I can find some hidden gems. For example, both Sam & Omie's and Wanchese Marina serve a good barbecue sandwich. Black Pelican, at least on this day, does not. I must say, the serving was huge. This was more than enough for two meals for me. The barbecue was dry and not well flavored. The texture and flavor was more like dried out beef that has been over-roasted. This is not something I would order again here. All that being said, I am leaving the rating for Black Pelican as it is because we have always had good meals here. I accept that it can't be 100% perfect every time and sooner or later we will run into something that is less than stellar. We will continue to return. I just know this not where I will have barbecue and we are sure the shrimp thing was just a one timer.

All in all, Single Fin Thai Sushi rates as a low 3-star restaurant, mainly because of the preparation of my tofu. Trying to book a special reservation for your family? It's a huge pain for them. And they will make it known when you call and when you arrive. It's all good if you can get past the gatekeepers, I guess.
