​As many years as we have been coming to the OBX, we had never stopped here before. We were looking for something new to try, and after looking at all the great reviews, we decided to give it a shot. We were very impressed! ​I started out with a margarita, which was very flavorful. For appetizers, we shared the pork belly and the crab dip. I love pork belly anyway, but these were so delicious I could easily eat a couple of plates of them as a meal with a side salad. For the mains, we had the tilefish with a baked potato. It was very light and flaky, and we will definitely be ordering this dish again. To finish off the meal, we had a key lime pie which was delicious. ​The service was fantastic. Our server, Timothy, was very friendly and spot-on with his suggestions. He was attentive and truly made our meal enjoyable. After owning a home in the Outer Banks, we finally decided to try Basnight's Lone Cedar Cafe. One thing to know before you go--they open at 4:30 p.m., theydo not take reservations, and people start lining up outside before the doors even open. We arrived early, and there was already a line forming. The restaurant is much larger than I expected, with a separate bar area, a huge dining room, and beautiful views of the water. They even have a souvenir shop, which is fun to browse. This is definitely a popular, family-style Outer Banks restaurant. The staff was a highlight of our visit. Everyone was super friendly, welcoming and attentive throughout our meal. The food, however, was a little iffy for us. The menu looks extensive at first glance, but it is very seafood-heavy. We had a non-seafood eater in our group who ended up ordering a burger. I ordered the scallops and was surprised by how small they were, especially for a restaurant like this. The presentation was also very basic--the vegetables looked like they had simply been dropped onto the plate without much thought to presentation. Everything was fine, but I was expecting a little more based on the restaurant and its setting. Overall, come here for the friendly service, casual family atmosphere and beautiful waterfront views. Just don't go expecting an upscale or fancy dining experience. It's a large, busy, family-style seafood restaurant in a great location, and if that's what you're looking for, you'll probably enjoy it. read more

Despite mixed reviews, our group wanted to try this popular waterside restaurant. Doors open at 4:30c they do not take reservations. There was a long line to get into the place. The line moved quickly as patrons weee quickly seated. Our group was seated at a window. We had a nice view of the osprey nest near the water. Our server was excellent. She was attentive and detailed. She was consistently checking on our drinks and the quality of our food. I wanted to point out that most of the tables appeared to be eating and not waiting long for service or food. The food portions were generous. The mozzarella sticks(4) were delicious. It took forever for someone to come take our order even though the restaurant wasn't busy, and we actually had to ask twice before anyone came over. We've often gotten into a rut of trying the same set of restaurants but really branched out this trip. This spot was a big hit with our entire crew. We showed up around 6:15 PM and there was a little wait - but not too bad. Comfy chairs to wait in, a garden to check out, and an osprey nest. We got the crab dip for an appetizer and all agreed it was delicious - plus the table corn bread was a big hit. I went for the fried scallop plate and these were so good. A light fry and almost a carmelized bottom to them. Perfectly cooked. Everyone loved their meals, although I'll note the person who got the crab cakes felt they were a bit under-seasoned and there was no sauce that came with them. My one big miss was the chocolate cake was out, but the Hershey Bar cake was available. This cake was not good. The cake was poorly cooked - it did not rise properly, and the weirdly white icing and filling did not remotely reflect a Hershey bar. As my grandmothers favorite restaurant in outer banks Lone Cedar Cafe never disappoints. Located in the beautiful sound in Nags Head this wonderful restaurant serves the best seafood and steakhouse bar I have ever been to. We started out with their delicious home made southern cornbread. Our seats were in a booth overlooking the beautiful osprey nest in the sound. The ospreys were also eating fish for dinner to which was pretty cool to see. The service was outstanding as well. For dinner we ordered shrimp and grits, blackened rockfish with whipped sweet potatoes and Brussels sprouts and prime rib with baked potato and asparagus. Even on a busy night, the wait was only 15 minutes. The food was excellent, service fast and attentive without being falsely personal and the fresh catch was legit and worth every Penny. The bar makes great cocktails, wines to fit every budget and a little gift shop to please just about anyone. It was clean and the view was great even though there were no window tables open. We love Basnight's for special occasions, or just to have their delicious food. It's just over the last bridge onto the Outer Banks, and it's also very close to where we usually stay a few times a year. I personally will always get the fried oysters if they're in season, but they're also known for soft-shelled crabs (my sister's favorite). They have daily specials too! We also love the crab dip with pita triangles - YUM! You can almost make a meal just on that. I love sitting at the windows overlooking the sound because there's a big nest there -- fun to watch the birds. Recommended farm-to-table restaurant in Nags head! We dined here on a Saturday night in June. There was no wait for a table as the dining area was relatively empty. Our server, Dalton (?), was fun and attentive. He was so patient with our many questions. He even quickly made an order change when one of our party changed their mind and double checked allergens. We received complementary cornbread and butter then our appetizers. The entrees arrived in a reasonable amount of time and tasted great! I especially enjoyed the blackened tilefish, crab cakes, and grit cakes. The prices are reasonable for the quality of the meal and experience. As we dined we enjoyed watching the nearby osprey family feed their baby. On our way out, we walked through the organized and labelled garden. Only thing we disliked was the additional plate charge. Two of our 7 person party shared a dish. Everyone else each ordered full entrees and we ordered several appetizers and drinks. We started with drinks (not too pricey) and appetizers- We had the in season crab dip ( owner/employee) go out and harvest daily. The dip was creamy and delicious, not real fond of the dipping bread. We arrived at around 6 on a Tuesday night. It was not very busy but we still had a half hour wait. Short staff. Once seated our server was quickly to us. Our salads came out fast. My wife had the house garden salad with raspberry vinegarette. She thought the dressing was a little strong. I agreed after tasting it. I had the wedge salad and it was okay. My wife had the baked flounder and she said that it lacked seasoning and was over cooked and dry. I had the jumbo soft shell stuffed crab. They were very good. Our first and only visit to this restaurant on July 16 2026. The restaurant opens at 4:30 and by 6:30 they were out of many food options on the menu ( this in itself wasn't the problem) the problem came when the meal was served and items you ordered weren't served and the server had no clue what we were talking about and then the answer was the kitchen was out ( not even making us aware nor offering alternatives). The server responding with a deer in the head like stare. To continue selection for sides were minimal at best( mind you this restaurant is supposed to be more upscale, at least by their pricing. The saga continues with one or party ordering a fish dish and by the taste and smell inedible ( their was solution was a $12 price reduction for not eating the meal). The server wasn't attentive at all, we had to request for more water, drinks, condiments etc. We were not a demanding group at all just wanted a little attention to our needs. My meal was to be prepared with blackened seasons their version was blackened meant black, dry and burnt. I can continue with even more critique but I think you can get idea. I believe restaurants like this in a beach town know that customers are normally not repeaters so the can shovel out any type of food and service they want because you probably won't come back. The backstory: I was visiting the OBX for the first time with a group of 6 and we were looking for a place to enjoy a nice meal. Read some positive reviews online about this restaurant, so we decided to give it a shot. The restaurant was crowded upon our arrival, which seemed to be a good sign. The space is absolutely huge and can accommodate a large number of guests. We were promptly seated and our waitress came to take our order. Our group chose the crab dip as an appetizer, which was tasty but not very large and came with a limited amount of bread to dip. Everyone ordered a drink, and the bartender did a nice job in preparing them. The pina colada was the fan favorite--tasty and refreshing. The problems really arose when we ordered food. A few of our orders were entered incorrectly, and we were given the wrong entrees. Not the end of the world, but a bit inconvenient. A few of us also ordered a second round of drinks before our meal arrived, but the drinks still hadn't arrived at our table by the time we had finished our food. We kindly asked our waitress to inform the bartender that we didn't need the second drinks to be made, which she did -- but then we were still charged for them on the final bill. Thankfully, we talked to the waitress and she removed them from the bill. Overall, the food was meh. The mahi mahi was the best entree of the bunch. Flounder was dry and relatively tasteless. Parmesan crusted chicken breast was bland and boring. Fries were tasty, but the grit cake was pretty gross. I guess I (naively) envisioned a bit more when I found out this restaurant was "farm to table," but the food left us all wanting more. I'm not one to typically leave poor reviews, but if you're looking for a nice night out for a good meal while enjoying the beauty of the Outer Banks, I'd recommend looking elsewhere. read more

We have come here every year for that last six years and always have been happy with our choice. Things have changed. We decided to come tonight out of convenience. We were able to be seated quickly. Our server was friendly and provided an overview of the fish of the day and other options on the menu. We looked over the menu and it is large and varied. The special menu was as large as the regular menu. I ordered the broiled seafood platter (shrimp, scallops and flounder) with a bake potato and corn on the cob. Our meals were brought out quickly almost too fast for what was ordered. My wife had fried flounder. All the seafood was overcooked by a lot. Scallops were rubbery and flavorless. Shrimp was limp and cold. Flounder was dry and overdone and under seasoned. The corn and potato were also over done. It's a shame because this has always been a favorite when we visit OBX. read more

They catered our wedding on 11/29/2025 (2 days after Thanksgiving) in a not-so-easy-to-reach location on the 4x4 beach in Corolla, NC. Everything from start to finish was perfect and the food was DELICIOUS! We loved everything about our experience with them. They have extensive menu options and worked with us to pick the perfect dishes for our brunch (we had a Saturday mid-morning wedding). We live in Alabama and they worked with us to schedule a tasting when we were near the Outer Banks and easily made changes to our menu when we asked them to. They even accommodated our request for an avocado toast bar (an off menu add on) with different options for guests (such as smoked salmon, bacon, feta cheese, etc) . We had a zoom conference a few weeks before the wedding to finalize every detail. Their professionalism and attention to detail is top-notch! The day of the event -- wow! Their crew was so professional and thoughtful. We had passed hors d'ouvres and a staffed brunch buffet. They went out of their way to make sure my husband and I had food during the reception and prepared a large tray for he and I to have leftovers the next day. Everyone attending gave them rave reviews and I would not hesitate to hire them again. We haven't been here in a few years. Before, there was a bisque with a large amount of crab suspended in the middle of the bowl. Today, it was all mixed up. More like a gumbo consistency. It was removed from the bill. Thank you. I had the large soft shell crabs stuffed with jumbo lump crab. There was no jumbo lump crab. It was more of a consistency of crab mixed in a blender. Terrific seafood! I had a bowl of their She-Crab Soup which was some of the best I've ever had. I was very full with the soup and a side salad. The salad came out of their organic garden. It doesn't get any fresher than that unless you're having their fish. Most of which was swimming when you were having breakfast. My wife had their crab cakes and proclaimed them to be fantastic. The crab soup was not soup at all but a little cup of gooey paste with so much cartilage in it that it was clearly never picked through. Prime rib was cold and tough and ordered rare. The veg of the day was gross and the crab cake, had been sold to me by the waitress as a jumbo lump crab meat with no filler broiled with butter. It was none of the above. It was a very small dry and overcooked crabcake with a filler, and it was clearly cooked hours before and just barely reheated before serving. We paid for our meal and then I informed the manager how bad everything was even showing her in the leftover box what the crabcake look like. She was surprised that I paid for a bad meal, but I wanted her to know how bad things were and didn't want her to think. I just wanted a meal comped. But the food, server and ambiance inside more than made up for her attitude. We sat at the bar and enjoyed a couple old fashions waiting approximately 35mins for our table. The server (Kindra if we recall correctly) was very pleasant. We had appetizers, entrees and deserts. Appetizers were wedge salad and crab dip = both very good. They have a jeweler there (I know - odd) but the jewelry sold is made by a gentleman who's been designing and creating for 50 years. His son works the store for him. Definitely not a great choice or a worth the money. Overcooked and overpriced is the overall experience. I ordered the whole flounder fried, what a waste of a perfectly good fish. It comes with some kind of cooked to death beets. The flounder was so over cooked the flesh was almost dry. My dining friends had green beans as a side. They were totally unrecognizable, they were almost totally black. It's really sad to see such a good restaurant to get to this point. Something has changed it's either ownership or management.
