BLUF: Great market, fresh seafood and friendly employees. Billy's Seafood located on Colington Island is a terrific place for a few groceries and fresh seafood. In addition to having grocery staples they have an impressive collection of condiments for seafood as well as common ingredients for preparing seafood. I was most impressed by the stacks of hush puppy mix from various brands. It was a fabulous sight. We get steamed crabs from Billy's annually. As a Maryland commercial crabber my father is quite picky (no pun intended) about his crabs and he trusts Billy's Seafood. On my recent visit to the store another customer was picking up steamed shrimp which smelled so good. This market is charming and the employees are delightful. read more

So we went back to Billy's for more shrimp. The price was half what we have paid elsewhere on the outer banks and we thought the bigger prices were ok. The shrimp we bought was as delicious as any we have had. So we picked up another pound plus for dinner and we got 4 pounds to freeze and take home. Now that we are back at the RV it seems like we can pack an additional two pounds in the freezer, so tomorrow we will stop by again. Billy passed away a few years back and Judy runs the place (and owns the OBX RV Park we are staying at too. We met her and completely enjoyed talking to her. The place has been in business over 50 years She was as friendly and welcoming as possible. We learned a good bit about soft shelled crabs. She and Cary, my wife, hit it off and talked about cooking crabs and running the RV park. We both enjoyed the experience. I should have taken a picture of the two of them talking. The staff was helpful again. And we are getting ready for a thrown together dinner of shrimp Creole... I picked up a beer to go with it. read more

Great place to grab seafood to have back at your place. A combo grocery and fresh market. I had a couple of pounds of old bay steamed shrimp, which were exactly what I wanted. The tuna steaks looked good, if I'd have been shopping for those. There was cocktail sauce too, if I wanted some premade. read more

Been coming down to the OBX for nearly two decades and grab seafood from this joint from time to time when we carryout seafood. Prices were competitive and service efficient. Half bushel of #1s had what looked to be jumbos thrown on top; almost all crabs had both claws on, were heavy, and cooked perfectly. Long neck clams and shrimp were great! Take a drive out to Colington Road. It's worth your time. Billy's is the best place to buy fresh seafood. We came out on a Friday afternoon and picked up all sizes of NC shrimp. Large $5.95lb and Jumbo at 10.95lb. They sell fish, frozen crab legs and other seafood. If you need souvenirs they also have that too. For an additional $2.00 they will steam your seafood. Parking is super easy and the staff is very friendly. They will even put your purchase on ice if you are not going home right away. Staff is super helpful. read more

An old timey market selling the best fresh shrimp around. The staff appeared to be in their 70s, and were generally more focused on sitting around talking than anything. The interior is dark and a little sterile / concrete -- not appealing. Even the food is seemingly haphazardly displayed, and you wonder if you can walk out without causing offense, because you must be in the wrong place. But this is one of those places that probably hasn't changed in decades. And despite everything, they have the best fresh shrimp. It seems unlikely, but this is the place to go. read more

I purchased 4lb X lg shrimp 3lb lg shrimp 2lb tuna 3lb flounder. $166.00 Im 70 and had purchased shrimp and tuna in April. Excellent. I was in for a big surprise my Daughter picked this up for me. She was visiting. I had saved my money for 2 months. It was nothing fresh about it. Maybe caught Saturday or Monday. The Tuna was soft and you could leave finger prints in it. The shrimp size was border line with legs that came off with a slight tug. Fresh my eye. I guess Wednesday is not a good day to buy Seafood from Billy's. What a disappointment!!! read more

I found this place on a quick Yelp search as my boyfriend and I were leaving OBX and heading back home from a way to short vacation. I had a craving for some blue crabs to take home with us and this place did NOT disappoint. As someone who grew up in DC and travels from Richmond to BMore several times a year, just for some Maryland crabs, I was pleasantly surprised! The price for their male #1's were very reasonable. AND they were really good! The meat was sweat and the seasoning was well balanced. There is a reason this place popped up in my top recommendations. I can't wait for my next trip to the OBX. First time here on 9/15/24 and won't be last. 3 of us visited and picked up numerous seafood and veggies for a family crab / shrimp boil. Had great help / service in selection / pricing / freshness. Settled on dungeness and snow crab. Fishers are generally off on Sundays so blue crabs weren't available. ( one store on hwy 158 - " I've ,,, ,,,, ,,, " had blue crabs and when I asked for pricing on doz jimmies she quoted $100 !!!! Yep --- $100 doz @%# ) Would encourage you to visit @ Billy's. Look no further for fresh seafood.... This Colington Road market has some of the biggest shrimp around. Their prices are super reasonable and their inventory is fresh. We came in for a few pounds of jumbo shrimp. We had them steamed and they offer up a nice selection of seasoning. We also purchased some frozen crab legs, a bit pricey but oh so delicious and worth every nickel. They will also season and shrimp. The market has some other grocery products if you don't feel like making another stop. Parking is easy, private lot. read more

Best seafood market I've found in the OBX. Staff seems to really enjoy what they do, but also don't have time for some of the BS that walks through the door. Which is how businesses should be run. As locals as you can get. This is not a tourist trap selling overpriced half quality seafood to unsuspecting tourists. This is like literally your old-time grocery store/seafood market. No fancy lighting and decor here to make the seafood look fresh, they just are. The oysters are the best I've had, big, plump, briny, and sweet. At $0.60each, they are a steal! I ended up buying 3 full bags (300) to take home, unfortunately i didn't have a cooler big enough so they made an icebox out of trash bags, wax carton, and ice bags (that they didn't charge for). That kept them alive a fresh for the 8hrs drive home. Amazing! After giving them out, people are still raving about them. read more

I usually visit the Outer Banks only during the off-season, when it's rather difficult to find certain types of seafood, but Billy's never fails. Best steamed crabs we have had in years. great prices, great service, FANTASTIC CRABS (and we live in Maryland).

(10/06/2016) We do a week in OBX every year with a large group of friends. Certainly can't be at the beach without hard crabs. We get Billy's to steam for us (so so much easier) and definitely Old Bay. Usually we get a bushel, some of us pick 2 dozen and some give up after picking 2 or 3. Since we go late in the season, it's hit or miss on which days there'll be crabs, sometimes we have to wait and see when the boats come in, but be persistent. Since they're also caught right there, the sizing might be variable, and that means that a bushel (a measure by volume) will have a variable number of crabs in it depending on the size. Generally, the bushels we've gotten ranged from 5-7 dozen. The meat is sweet and super fresh. We totally love getting the crabs from Billy's, it's a tradition now! Just FYI, if you're a diverse group, send the white people over to get the crabs AND definitely pay attention to the street numbers on Collington Rd. We accidentally pulled into the Blue Crab Tavern just barely up the road because we saw the big blue crab sign outside. An Asian and an African American walk into a redneck dive bar in a trailer park...(not a joke). They told us in no uncertain terms we were in the wrong place. Always the best blue crab you can get. Friendly and straightforward. We have picked up half and whole bushels at least 10 times.

I ordered 1 lb of large shrimp and 2 dozen blue crabs from Billy's and it was awesome. The shrimp were steamed to perfection and the crabs were seasoned fantastically and were nice and meaty. To the folks giving low reviews to the ladies there, I'd suggest having a tougher skin. They are indeed nice, and they're also super efficient. Since this is one of the best places to get fresh seafood, they don't have time to dilly dally around. Some might find this as "poor customer service" but I see it as an extremely efficient operation so they can please the 90%. I highly recommend Billy's. read more

And this week there was a shock, it was impossible to enter the store, there was such a stench, as if all the fish had sighed. I have been to the Outer Banks many times. This year was my first trip to Billy's Seafood. We had two families and we wanted to do a seafood extravaganza of sorts. The woman who waited on me was truly a sweetheart. I bought some shrimp which they seasoned and steamed, scallops, a couple Mahi Mahi fillets, some clams, and one live jumbo crab. The woman running things even helped me carry some of it to the car. We cooked everything and the shrimp they had steamed and seasoned along with everything was fantastic. I don't believe I will ever visit the Outer banks again without stopping to get my seafood fix at Billy's Seafood. Everything about my experience was first class. read more
