Staff was unfriendly seemed to have little interest in helping or accommodating. I asked if they had larger clams than the ones on display and she reluctantly went to the back and brought back a bag of clams that were clearly half the size and seemed annoyed when I decided to get the first kind. The tuna steak on display was sliced and I asked if they had any tuna in the back that wasn't yet sliced so I could buy a chunk and slice it myself, to which she replied a flat, "No.". Okey dokey! OK - the treasure here is that this is an off beaten place where you can get great seafood at a really good price. A lot of their seafood is caught fresh. For example, when we visited the only item that was not locally caught was the salmon. So you can get NC fresh shrimp (with head) for $5/lb (and these are 20 to lb shrimp). Nothing fancy - just a local place that most tourist won't know about. We buy our fish there and bring it back to the condo to enjoy (you won't get anything better at the chain grocery stores - Harris Teeter, Fresh Market, Food Loin. Feels like deliverance in a way because out of the way and you'll end up near trailer parks (but really friendly folks). The items that are not caught in NC (salmon) only slightly lower price vs. what you will get at the national grocery store. This is definitely a local hot spot. Billy's is probably your local fish shop not really for the tourists which is ok since it is on a winedy back road off of the main route. The ladies were friendly/helpful and the older gentleman in his lawn chair "supervising" was easy to make small talk with. We stopped and got some steamed shrimp and it was pretty tasty. They had a small selection of fish and shrimp. read more

I rarely leave reviews, but after reading the reviews here --Billy's needs a fair shake. When I'm heading out for fresh seafood, the last thing on my mind is rude service. Don't care--as long as the seafood lives up to my very high standards, it's all good. The first visit, we picked up fresh tuna and 100-ct bag of clams. Grilled the tuna and it was excellent! Very fresh and tender. Out of 100 clams, maybe 2 didn't open. Were the staff rude? Nope, but they weren't perky pants either. They run a seafood/grocery store off the beaten path, they have a job to do and maybe chatting up tourists just isn't their thing. Went back for shrimp and crab--again, fabulous. I did not find the staff rude nor the service lacking. Definitely our 1st stop for seafood on our yearly Outer Banks vacation. read more

A disappointing selection of fresh seafood compared to others we've been to at other beaches. They had the standards: shrimp, scallops, flounder, clams but no crabs or tuna. They also had salmon - not local - but it was good. It's a large store that sells a lot of other items should you need them. The women who worked there were very friendly, and their potato salad was good. read more

This is a favorite place of one of my friend's moms, but I went today for the first time. Staff was friendly and helped us find what we were looking for even though we didn't really know what we were doing. They steamed ($2.00 extra) and seasoned (free) some crab legs for us. It was about $69 for 3lbs, which is a pretty good deal considering how expensive seafood is. The crabs legs were sooooo good. They were delicious and totally worth it. Also my friends and I were visibly queer and one staff member came up to us and was like "I love your shirt and your hair and your vibe" which was so cute. read more

Bought large shrimp that were borderline small to medium at best. Lady wanted to argue with me on the phone about shrimp count. I got the shrimp count and they did not measure up. I suggested that possibly the shrimp were mis marked. She indicated that she did not know what I was taking about. She sounded like she didn't have time for my observation. I live about 2 miles down the road. I hate to start getting my Seafood at a chain store but will to get what I pay for. read more

BLUE CRABS! STEAMED WITH OLD BAY! - grabs a mallet - I'M READY!!! The people at Billy's are so incredibly nice you just want to take them home with you! We called in our order of 5 dozen but were told that Bushel was cheaper for an extra $10. OKAY - Bushel it is! What's a Bushel... it turns out it's an 18x18x24 (at the very least) box of 84-96 medium Crabbies! Total came out to $118, WHAT A STEAL!!! This sounds like a lot of $ but this would EASILY be over $400 at a restaurant, easily. I've always wanted to do this, order out and dump them on a table at home with close friends/family and go at it, and that's exactly what we did. We had 8 adults eating non-stop for 2+ hours and we barely made a dent through half the box. Billy's allowed us to do this without traveling all the way to Nag's Head (where the other Seafood Markets are). They advise you to take a bunch of Newspaper (free!) for home to minimize cleanup. Some say that they go overboard with the Old Bay, but they really don't. The crabs stay nice and warm in the wax lined box. If you are in KittyHawk, NC and craving crabs, this is the place to go - no contest. Oh, and they have a ton of other fresh seafood as well - just call and ask! -------- On the way home to NYC we called to order a half Bushel of Live Crabs to go. I had 2 people with me when I placed the order. When we arrived they were Steamed and seasoned. The lady was adamant she took the order and I said steamed. I guess at Billy's, the staff and not the customer is always right. They also told us that Crabs would not last on ice for 9 hrs, we would need a refrigerated truck so I guess we lucked out? When we ordered a Bushel, we easily had over a dozen each (for 8 of us), so we're guessing 9-10 dozen for $118. For our half bushel, we had asked for it to be split evenly into 3 bags. They asked why and we explained they were going to 3 households. My bag had 16 crabs so that lead's me to think we had a total of 48 which is 4 dozen for $69. This makes feel totally ripped off. Dropped them 1 star. So sad to be so disappointed, still a good price though. read more

This is where we will get our blue crabs from now on. We purchased a bushel from O'neals in Wanchese at the recommendation of the fishing captain of our boat earlier in the week. We were very disappointed to get back to Kill Devil Hills and discover that we had 16 dead crabs in our bushel. Since we had 30 people to feed we needed those crabs and we weren't about to drive all the way back to wanchese to get replacements. A little Google search turned up Billy's. I called and asked if they had 3 dozen live blue crabs for me and they said they did. 5 minutes later when i got there they told me they only had 2 dozen, they had just sold a dozen when I was on my way over. Because of that, they gave me a break on the price which was nice. The crabs we got were nicer than the #1 jimmies that we had gotten O'Neals and their prices were the same. It's a great little shop off the beaten path in Kill Devil Hills and this is where we will get our crabs in the future. read more

Billys is a great place. You can always get the freshest seafood and they always have great prices. Got some Littleneck Clams today, took them back and streamed them and ate them with some melted butter. Sweet and delicious. And make sure that you try the Tuna Salad. It is a tuna salad on crack. It's got huge chunks of fresh tuna and is seasoned perfectly. Very nice and very helpful people working there. read more

PRICE GOUGING!! Stopped by Billy's the other day to pick-up some seafood and a 1/2 gallon of milk. When I walked in the seafood had been out in metal pans all day and didn't look so good so I passed the seafood up and just grabbed the 1/2 gallon of milk. Walked up to the register and the lady says $6.00. She didn't even punch any numbers on the register but was quick to say $6.00. What a joke, you can buy the same milk at the local grocery stores for under $2.00. Billy's just lost a local customer that lives walking distance to their store and has given them a lot of business. We were looking for steamed blue crabs by the bushel. A lady on the phone told me the #1 Jimmy's were so big that it would be cheaper to buy them by the dozen because there wouldn't be as many in a bushel as I might be expecting. She was right. These were the biggest blue crabs I think we've had anywhere, and we're from Maryland. They were delicious and heavy with meat. We can be pretty sure that the crabs were fresh because when I called, she didn't have enough to fill my order. It was a couple days after hurricane Sandy and she explained that "the guys are still out looking for their pots, but we should have enough by the time you're ready to pick up your order." And they did. When we showed up to get the crabs, we did note that the fish smell in the building was quite pungent, but I suppose that's to be expected at a seafood market. Besides, its not a sit-down restaurant; we weren't there to eat. Staff was friendly. They carried the crabs to the car for us and offered plenty of newspaper to lay out. And we couldn't have been happier with the food. read more

The woman I spoke with on the phone was extremely unprofessional, so much so that we decided not pick up seafood from Billy's Seafood and we went out of our way and paid more, to go somewhere else. She sounded disappointed that we wanted to order crabs 20-25 minutes before they closed. She must have said "hurry up" to me 3+ times and I was trying to order. After hearing her tell me to hurry up and get in to get the food the third time, I decided to cancel my order. Billy's Seafood you really disappointed us. Ordered a pound and a quarter of fresh stone crab claws. 1) The guy at the counter did not know the different kinds of crabs. He was showing me dungeness and later ask assistance from another person in the store. 2) The claws were frozen (not really as fresh as I thought it would be) - might as well pick some frozen ones at the regular grocery store 3) I've asked for them to steam it -- the result: Overcooked and dry, dry dry. My wife and I are so disappointed that we would not recommend for them to cook it for you. You would think that they would know how to not "extremely" over cook crabs! The food waa ok. Woukd have been alot better if the owner had been a little bit more considerate to our needs. She was very nasty to us. Yes I understand they get busy,, but to. Accuse us of stealing 4 lbs of crab legs after one if her employees had already explained that the kitchen messed up was very unprofessional and degrading. To many other crab shops to visit to be treated this way. It took 2 hours to finally get our order completed after we paid and all if our other foidcsat in the car for an hour and a half. I was born and raised in MD. Everyone vacationing with us lives in MD. We take our crabs so seriously, we buy them live and steam them ourselves. You can't trust just anyone to steam the crabs the right way. I made a few phone calls and Billy's had live large male blues for $50/half bushel! GREAT price. I sent my husband and some of the other guys off to pick them up. They also came home with 1lb of shrimp. The crabs were gorgeous and steamed up perfectly. The shrimp were large and deliciously fresh. They added some mallets to our bag and we went to town. Next time, I'll make the drive to see what else Billy's has to offer. read more

After living on as well as visiting the Outer Banks for years, this is the place to get fresh seafood. Its a little off the beaten path, but well worth the trip. You can place your order in advance for larger amounts of oysters, crabs, clams and mussells. Not the largest selection but everything is super fresh - right off the boat. This week he had large and jumbo fresh caught shrimp, rockfish,scallops, flounder and tuna - all super fresh and awesome! We also ordered a peck of clams and a triple peck of oysters - very fresh as well with almost no "throw aways". He only orders enough for 2 days supply based on the season so its best to call in advance and he will hold your order for you. read more

As they claim, best prices and freshest seafood on the beach! Not knocking other local seafood marts, but I haven't been disappointed in 30 years, so.....why change? We were at Billy's yesterday for tuna steaks, but we purchase tuna loins instead for the grill tonight. We marinated the tuna and grilled it to a delicious rare-to-medium rare. Two lbs of tuna and a couple of lbs of large NC shrimp later....we had a happy dad and 2 satisfied teens, 6'6" & 6'4" (so not easily filled up)....too bad mom couldn't make the trip this weekend! We are blessed to have a house within 15 minutes of Billy's, so when the urge strikes we can be there, back, and enjoying the best Carolina seafood inside of an hour. I am spoiled on NC shrimp, so will not eat any other.....and Billy's is my place to go!! read more

The staff is always nice and knowledgeable especially if you've never had a certain type of fish and want to know what it tastes like or how to cook it. Its not usually busy and has that mom and pop feel. They have some groceries and you never know what you might find but it will almost always be good.
