I grew up coming to the Outer Banks every summer, and Austin's has always been a reliable staple of our vacation here. They offer cooked/fried takeout, but my favorite part is the fresh fish that you can buy and take home to cook yourself. The fish is super fresh and most of the varieties they sell are local. Among the local varieties are tuna, flounder, grouper, wahoo, shark, shrimp, and so much more, and they also have a few types a fish that aren't local to the area such as salmon and cod. They also have crab meat there, and my favorite is the jumbo lump crab. That quality of crab comes with a high price tag, as it will anywhere, but it is highly worth it! They also have various items for sale that you can use to prepare the fish, such as lemons and high-quality marinades. The staff is also very helpful in that they will recommend different ways of cooking and preparing the various fish types. Austin's opens at 9:00 a.m. and they close at 6:00 in the evening. I'd also recommend going Tuesday through Friday, as the selection seems to be a bit better. I don't have confirmation on this but I don't think the fishermen go out on the weekends, so therefore the selection Saturday-Monday isn't quite as robust. To top it all off, though this is technically a separate business from Austin's, there is a fresh produce stand set up in their parking lot. They have local fruits and vegetables such as peppers, potatoes, butter beans, blueberries, & strawberries, as well as some delicious and unique jams and jellies. If you're in the Outer Banks, I highly recommend a trip to Austin's for some exquisite, local fresh fish! read more

This was a hidden gem we discovered. We ordered the Shrimp meal. Huge portions. The shrimp was perfect, it came with the potato salad, fritter and fries. the potato salad was fresh and very good. Clam chowder didn't have a lot of clams, key lime pie they had is good, seafood is good even though to the basics, order processing was kind of confusing as I was back and forth between counter and food counter. Fresh seafood; they cook it or you purchase raw in bulk. Listened to others and orders scallops - wow! Perfectly cooked, moist and melted in my mouth! Shrimp was also fresh and tasty. Use the lemon, it needed it. Sides were just okay; mac and cheese I thought the best. Wish they had a sampler platter and after ordering I saw a sign on the counter (hidden) that they have fresh lobster...I asked if they had more than listed on the board...overall, we'll try them again. Picked up a steamer pot from here today for a quick, fun, and tasty dinner. This place has all the fixings! Giant steamer bucket, cocktail sauce, stick of butter, and lemon! Normally when we pick up already steamed we fend for ourselves so this was a nice change... the only miss we're the rubbery clams. As a non-seafood connoisseur I relied on our friend from New England who said they were pretty subpar; the shrimp were incredibly difficult to peel as well. They didn't have crabs when we walked in, but they had shrimp, bivalves, and all sorts of fish - mahi mahi, grouper, tuna... We ended up buying shrimp to go and cooked them on the grill on skewers. Biggest positive about this place is that their breading is light. I like to be able to taste my seafood when it is friend and this place still lets you do it. We got fried scallops that I barely realized that they were fried and fried shrimp. I enjoyed the scallop more than the shrimp but the shrimp was good as well. The hushpuppies have corn in them and I think they are better than some other because of that BUT my daughter disagrees as she does not like corn in them. The coleslaw was so so but I wouldn't get coleslaw again. I probably would skip the sides and just focus on the seafood here next time. read more
