While on the OBX we stopped in to Austin Fish for lunch at the recommendation of a friend who lives here. We tried the crab cake sandwich, the grouper fingers with Mac n cheese and coleslaw, and the gumbo. Everything was tasty. Not the best grab and go lunch we had on the OBX, but definitely decent and we would go back!

We bought fresh shrimp and scallops and they were amazing! You could tell they were fresh and local. Good prices too.

KILL DEVIL HILLS, NC / SEAFOOD / 10-02-21 / TAKE-OUT DINNER +The NC fresh, large shrimp was steamed and seasoned nicely. -The crawfish was not fresh; more than likely, frozen. -The snow crab legs were very small and dry. The quality was not that great. Stick with the local, fresh seafood offerings of the day!

We have been going here for years! Great little seafood market with fresh (& frozen; like Alaskan crab legs) seafood. They have fresh from the ocean, locally caught seafood & you can have them prepare it for you too, if you don't want to cook. They also sell a lot of accoutrements to go with your seafood and they have a nice little selection of beer and wine. Prices are reasonable & service is quick, friendly, and efficient.

KUDOS to Austin Fish for practicing strict safety standards to protect visitors and members of the Nags Head community!
Harley S.

Beautiful impeccably fresh fish and shellfish, fairly priced. EXTRA KUDOS to the proprietors for taking the safety of the community seriously by setting up strict safety guidelines during the pandemic. Everybody is wearing masks, the number of patrons in the shop is strictly limited, and hand sanitizer dispensers are at each door. I encourage you to patronize this terrific little seafood shop.

Austin's is the most fabulous fish market and is one of the few things we miss the most from the OBX.

Billy's Seafood - 6 dozen long neck clams, cooked these ourselves as Billy's doesn't steam.

BLUF: Great market, fresh seafood and friendly employees…read more Billy's Seafood located on Colington Island is a terrific place for a few groceries and fresh seafood. In addition to having grocery staples they have an impressive collection of condiments for seafood as well as common ingredients for preparing seafood. I was most impressed by the stacks of hush puppy mix from various brands. It was a fabulous sight. We get steamed crabs from Billy's annually. As a Maryland commercial crabber my father is quite picky (no pun intended) about his crabs and he trusts Billy's Seafood. On my recent visit to the store another customer was picking up steamed shrimp which smelled so good. This market is charming and the employees are delightful.

So we went back to Billy's for more shrimp. The price was half what we have paid elsewhere on the…read moreouter banks and we thought the bigger prices were ok. The shrimp we bought was as delicious as any we have had. So we picked up another pound plus for dinner and we got 4 pounds to freeze and take home. Now that we are back at the RV it seems like we can pack an additional two pounds in the freezer, so tomorrow we will stop by again. Billy passed away a few years back and Judy runs the place (and owns the OBX RV Park we are staying at too. We met her and completely enjoyed talking to her. The place has been in business over 50 years She was as friendly and welcoming as possible. We learned a good bit about soft shelled crabs. She and Cary, my wife, hit it off and talked about cooking crabs and running the RV park. We both enjoyed the experience. I should have taken a picture of the two of them talking. The staff was helpful again. And we are getting ready for a thrown together dinner of shrimp Creole... I picked up a beer to go with it.

Fresh Catch Seafood - A 4 lb filet of the freshest, most buttery, amazing Big Eye Tuna.

This place is absolutely amazing. The menu might be limited (as they'll only sell the freshest fish…read morecaught within a day or so) but for the price and the freshness it's always our first stop for seafood. Our favorite, when they catch it, is big eye tuna (which compared to higher end grocery stores - that even sell that quality of Tuna - charge 500% more per pound). Their scallops are dry packed and frozen so you're not only paying less for the scallop but you're not paying for scallops have have been pumped with so much solution that they won't crisp up. Theirs cook the best I have ever cooked and you get more per pound. Even if something frozen from them, I can confidently say that it was frozen immediately after being caught and using the best practices so even if you thaw and cook their frozen products, they taste more fresh than any place that sells "fresh fish." A good side note anyway is even the "fresh" fish in most stores has been "previously frozen" and has been thawed out for a day or so (look at the small print on the sign) so buying theirs and thawing it the day you plan to cook it means even their frozen fish is fresher than any store's thawed fish. As long as this place is in business to the public we will continue to go there and it is even better that the employees here take their time to get to know their repeat customers and take effort to make you feel like you're a part of their community. Not many parents of 6 year olds can say that their kids LOVE going to get fish off the dock time and time again despite the industry smells simply because "the people there are so nice and they might have big eye tuna."

O'Neal's Sea Harvest - Shrimp basket

On this occasion, we walked around the Christmas Market at the Wanchese Community Center and had our lunch at O'Neal to end a six-year hiatus. We again had good seafood. Ms T had good, fresh and flavorful fried shrimp I had the catch of the day; Red Drum. We accepted the included coleslaw, and we both added fries. This was a good lunch. The seafood remained as good as before and the slaw is some of the better such around. They know how to give it a good sweet-sour balance. It was also fresh, not old and soggy as happens too many times. We also shared a cup of their crab soup that was not something we would ever order again. It is pasty, over-thickened with flour and almost totally unseasoned. We would prefer a creamy soup, that is thickened with cream. We added some salt, and it helped, but it was still wallpaper paste. There is really no saving this, they need to start over and lose the flour. We also felt the food was a little over-priced for what we got. I realize the days of getting a fresh seafood basket for $6 are far behind us, but over $50 for two baskets and one cup of soup is a little steep, especially when we both drank water. Ms T said she would prefer to return to Wanchese. The food is good here, but you have been warned about the crab soup and the prices.

The restaurant is also great. Very limited menu, but don't let that stop you, everything is prepared perfectly. I had some amazing fried red drum, and their coleslaw is maybe the best I've ever had. Fried seafood is lightly and perfectly breaded. Highly recommended!
