Our family has visited the OBX for over 20 years. Every year we buy steamed shrimp at Carawan's. We have always had our order steamed with Old Bay seasoning. We did our usual visit on Tuesday, August 4th and was very disappointed. To begin with the person behind the counter was unwelcoming and unfriendly. She gave the impression that she didn't want to be bothered. At check out we mentioned to the cashier the the person serving us had poor customer service. When we got home, to make matters the steamed shrimp was not like any other time. In order to eat the shrimp, which was so salty and spicy, we had to rinse it numerous times, and the salty taste still made it inedible. Next year we'll look for another seafood company. read more

We got Fresh scallops, shrimp, and mahi. Got some frozen crab cakes that were good too. Nice people and laid back. The seafood was fresh and tasty. Grabbed a couple condiments so we didn't have to deal with grocery store. Prices were very reasonable. Loved that I could buy already shelled and cleaned shrimp to splurge for an easy vacation dinner. Totally worth the extra cost. I buy here every couple of days when I am in town twice a year. Tourist Trap!! Locals know not to go here. Tourists love it thinking this is what fish is and it's disappointing. A friend insisted we go to get fresh fish but when he asked a simple question about the type of fish he was lied to and blown off. Fun fact he's a commercial fisherman and realized they either didn't know what they were selling or were trying to overcharge for subpar fish. I called a local for a referral and was told Billy's or Steamers are the places the locals trust. They knew their fish and answered my friend's questions easily. Called ahead and gave a time I would be there to pick up crabs and crab legs. Arrived at given time yet the crabs were cold and obviously cooked way before the time I asked to pick up. Also, two of the crabs were empty (literally only a shell with no crab meat inside). Crabs legs were hot and cooked perfectly. Unfortunately our experience was overshadowed by the cold crabs as this was a birthday gift for my husband. Bought a half pound of shrimp, which was okay. The Kelchner's cocktail sauce was good, but quite overpriced. But the reason why I will never come back to this place, and have taken my business elsewhere, is because of the horrible service. The older lady that rang me up did not even acknowledge my presence. She was on the phone the entire time, and ignored me when I said "hello" to her, when I thanked her, and when I said "goodbye". She wouldn't even look in my direction. How lucky to live basically down the street from this location seafood market. We've been several times to pickup fresh seafood and amazing desserts that are made by Simply Sweet OBX. I created my own seafood boil with a couple bags of their Alaskan crab legs and about 4 lbs of their largest shrimp. They steam for you and ask how much spice. It was so perfect and hot. Prices were great and theees no charge to steam. I've also purchased the key lime pies from their vendor Simply Sweet OBX. The guy who rang up my order said it was the best key lime he'd ever had. Located right in the Walmart complex next to the Beachwoods Resort where we were staying, we stopped here 3 times in the week we were in the area. Just a small store, typical of a fresh seafood store, with plenty of various fresh and frozen seafood, plus sides, sauces and seasonings. Selection changes almost daily as the fresh catches come in. Also a small selection of local beers. We had scallops, cobia, tuna, halibut, and oysters. They also had various shrimp, trout, mussels and clams. The only thing we didnt like (or dindt like as much as we had hoped) was the fresh shucked oysters, sold in glass about the size of a pint, holding 15-20 (?) oysters. They didnt compare to the oysters in the shell we brought back to the room and shucked -the oysters in the shell were nice and briny, where as the shucked ones were not. Private parking lot out front, enough for about 10 vehicles. Be sure to ask the owners when they have the next selections coming in. read more

We stopped in for steamed seafood here on our way out of the outer banks. The store only lets in 4 people at a time, but at 1 on a Sunday, it wasn't busy. We ordered a pound of spiced jumbo shrimp and a pound and a half of steamed crab legs. Both were the best seafood that we had during our trip to the outer banks (and we ate seafood every night). They were cooked just right, and not overcooked. The seafood seasoning got into the shrimp, and not just on top of it. It's also great that this place also sells other things -- we got a crab cracker so we could eat crabs at a park, and some cocktail sauce. The only down side is that the woman behind the counter took off her mask to hear me better. Uhm? lol. read more

We were on a quest for fresh oysters - unfortunately they had sold out before we arrived, but these guys really took care of us. I wish I had gotten the name of the gentleman who helped us out - he was one of the co-owners of the store. In any case, he really went over and above the call of duty to provide excellent customer service (even unlocking the door for us after closing time!) While we didn't get the oysters we were after, we did get some fresh off the boat shrimp, scallops and mussels. Yum-yum! I will definitelty be going back in the future. I witnessed them asking someone to pull one up over their nose, and they will ask people to leave who refuse to do so. Great location.
