I only have pictures of our leftover hush puppies, but I KNOW I will be back to order more in the future. We were driving by and my daughter said she was hungry so I pulled in and placed a to go order. We had a dog with us in the car and she said we should sit at the picnic tables and let her run around on the side. So we did. The restaurant is so cute, quaint and inviting. And the workers were so nice. We ended up getting hush puppies, dried okra, and two crab cake sandwiches. I was so impressed with how fresh and delicious the crab cakes were. Soooo good. I've lived in this area for years and I can't believe I've never stopped by here. This is a cute little roadside restaurant serving southern classics. I got the 7 dollar breakfast, and it was very good. Eggs were cooked to perfection and the grits were delicious. The biscuits and the sausage were a bit cold, which is the only thing preventing me from giving this 5 stars. The food came out very quickly and the server was helpful and nice. read more

We stopped for lunch. Service was good, the food was ok. I ordered the fried oysters. I've had better and I've definitely had worse.

A great place for authentic home cooked foods. I enjoyed a breakfast of eggs, corned beef hash and rye toast. I asked to be served in the outdoor dining area as I was traveling with my dog. Enjoyed a nice morning meal on the patio and was given courteous, prompt service and good food. read more

Simply the WORST pulled pork BBQ sandwich I have EVER had. The bun was oily, about 2oz of dry flavorless meat with a piece of cartilage thrown on top for texture, the coleslaw was the best part of the sandwich and was about 3-4oz. Lived on the Outer Banks for several years and just last month discovered Simply Southern! Heard about them on the radio and decided to check them out....and in a month we've been there four times! Great food, awesome people, great atmosphere.... couldn't ask for more! And the price...two thumbs up! Serving sizes are good too! Definitely will be going back!!! read more

Food was excellent, service was fast and staff was super sweet! Highly recommend. Had the Carolina pulled pork, Mac and cheese and collard greens. All were cooked perfectly and had were so full of flavor. The soft pretzel with cheese sauce was so good. Will be back next summer! read more

The food was delicious, especially fried chicken platter. Crispy skin but the meat was juicy. A corn bread was delicious. We wanted to try dessert too but the waitress gave us the bill while we were half way into our dinner. Maybe the desserts were sold out? We wouldn't never know. read more

Best biscuits on the beach, delicious fluffy omelette, great home fries. Bacon so under cooked couldn't eat but everything else delicious.

We came here for lunch. It's a cute little restaurant. I like the decor of the place. I ordered Fried chicken 3 pieces with hushpuppies and collard green. I like that they lightly sprinkle salt on the hushpuppies to enhance the sweetness. The fried chicken was cooked perfectly and still juicy. Blueberry pie with vanilla ice cream was perfect to end the meal. The warm blueberry filling and the cold vanilla ice cream complimented each other. The staff are friendly and attentive. Deliciousness - 3.75/5 Service - 2/5 This restaurant has all the staples you want for Carolina fare - namely pulled pork and fried chicken. I was particularly excited by the chicken livers, which were very tasty. The fried chicken was also particularly good, absolutely nailing the crispy outside to moist inside ratio that is critical for good fried chicken. That said, all the food was a bit one note. My taste buds were worn out on the taste of fried food as there weren't enough spices or flavors in the food to change things up. For example, the hush puppies tasted almost exactly like the fried entrees. I ordered green beans as a side and they were very bland so it didn't help to cleanse my palate. I ultimately ended up drenching a lot of the food in hot sauce to break up the monotony. I was also disappointed with the tea, which was more water than not. The servers were nice and made an extra effort to keep our glasses filled. However, they got some orders wrong (which they were quick to fix) and forgot two of the appetizers we ordered. So while they were friendly, it wasn't the best service. The price is great, you get a ton of value for your buck (indeed, this was probably the most cost-effective dinner we had on our vacation). So if you are looking for a solid Southern food meal while at the beach, this will satisfy. But it won't blow you away. read more

We stopped by for a quick lunch on our road trip. Location is just off the highway. Service was excellent. Food was what I call "white bread." My tacos were filled with unseasoned chicken breast, dried out cheddar cheese, iceberg lettuce, diced tomatoes. Where's the cilantro or salsa? The tacos were accompanied by a cup of wonderfully flavorful black beans and a cup of over cooked Spanish white rice. My Hubbie had the meatloaf melt sandwich with mashed potatoes which was hearty and wonderful. Side of green beans was lackluster. read more

As a southerner and someone with basic cooking skills I'm insulted. The best part of my meal was the hush puppies. The tea was bitter and watered down. The chicken wasn't seasoned. Also all the sides were canned or pre-made. Don't say southern if your mac and cheese is stoffers, and the collards are canned. Excuse me but as someone who makes both from scratch run like forest Gump away from this sad excuse for Southern. Cracker Barel is better than this place. read more

I have been wanting to try Simply Southern because although I am unimpressed with Sooey's (same owners) I liked their fried chicken and wanted to give the barbecue a chance. So, while on our way to ORF to pick up guests, we stopped for lunch. We ordered exactly those two items. Perhaps these are not the things to order here. Maybe the fried shrimp and flounder and oysters would be worth driving from KDH for, but fried chicken and barbecue are not. The fried chicken could have been good if it had any seasoning. It was salt free and black pepper free. While it was crisp and fresh and hot and the coating was not over-applied, it just needed something. This was a true disappointment, because the one time we had fried chicken at Sooey's I really liked it. My barbecue sandwich was generous and that is about all that can be said for it. There is absolutely no hint that this has been anywhere near a smoker, whether wood fired, charcoal, gas fired or electric. It was gray pork that probably came out of an oven. At least that is what they have managed to make it look and taste like. It had no smoke, no salt and very little vinegar sauce. Most importantly it had no North Carolina barbecue flavor. Award winning barbecue? How? Who gives these awards? This was just roast pork. Again, I thought from my previous experience that Sooey's barbecue (which this is) was acceptable. Huge double disappointment. You can get a way better barbecue sandwich a few miles south at OBX Bites and they are not even a barbecue joint. Perhaps one should try the fried seafood. High Cotton puts this to shame and, at least for us, is much closer. TL's is probably about the same distance and is infinitely better. I would drive out to Martelle's in Englehard before driving to SSK, at least for chicken and barbecue. I'm really puzzled by the ratings for such mediocre food. Sorry. read more

We also tasted the pork chops, fried chicken, and pulled pork. Side dishes: French fries, green beans, coleslaw, mac and cheese, fried okra, collard greens, baked beans, and hush puppies, plus sweet tea. Very very good little southern gem. If you want real authentic cooking this is the place. The menu is small but a good variety for all. Extremely pleasant and efficient waitress taking care of the entire restaurant and never did a customer have to wait. I ordered the BLT served on thick sliced white toast. It could've used a bit more mayo and bacon but the French fries were excellent. My husband ordered one of the lunch specials, meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy and a side of baked beans. He said everything was real, and one of the best meals he's gotten on the Outer Banks. We will definitely go back, and highly recommend that you try it too! read more
