A neat little restaurant on the water. You are able to eat inside or outside. The food was great.

We ate at Barry's while visiting family. We were offered a tour of the 12 hotel rooms and loved the themes. The restaurant was super cool with the old hunting lodge feel and decor. The Chicago Bear presence there with some of the Ditka, etc memorabilia was pretty nice. The location was a hidden gem and the outdoor area on the water is very nice. The live music really set the beach atmosphere. It's definitely has the beach bar feel. The food and drinks were very reasonably priced and good. I definitely recommend it. read more

Great hidden spot along the main road toward OBX! (Turn at the Hardee's/Royal Farms and keep on goin' to the end of the road.) It's definitely a local divey hideaway, with tons of cool and eclectic rural backwoods decor. GREAT FOOD. The boom boom shrimp sauce was really good, and the mushrooms had an unusual-looking, yet fantastic, coating and fry! Huge portion of those huge shrooms, as the photo shows. The 1 lb. portion of Steamed Shrimp was also huge! I guess I didn't realize how large the shrimp would be, and there are 15-20 in that bucket. They DO go very heavy on the Old Bay! I turned over the top shrimp so it wouldn't be so visible in the photo. Our awesome server Karen told us it would be that way, and next time I'll ask for light-to-no seasoning, because it really was very heavy (and therefore, salty). But still excellent! I never leave seafood on the plate, but there was just too much for me to finish. Google before you visit, because I understand the hours can vary. But worth the trip if you're looking for downhome rural waterside! Hubby and stepson have already been back several times on their Harleys, both for lunch and dinner. 3.5 stars is fair. Go for the chicken wings. It's a hole in the wall locals joint, but the wings are Huge, and really good. They keep it simple, with hot sauce or without. I would've appreciated if they fully plucked the wings though, and gotten those random feathers out of there. read more

About three times a year me and my boyfriend make a little trip about a 2 Hour Dr. getaway and our go to spot is a Barrys Walnut Island Restaurant and large they have 12 rooms and each room has a different theme and of course different sizes to accommodate families and smaller or larger groups we love their butterfly room and their beach room and they're cowboy themed rooms we just recently tried room 11 which is a chic room with Very up-to-date decor and it has a really nice Jacuzzi that we have lots of fun with! It is on the island so cell phone reception is not that great but who needs a cell phone when you're on a vacation and want to get away! The best part is that it's connected to the actual barrys restaurant so you have to go to the restaurant to book your room or you can call of course and they have been able to leave the keys in the room for us if we arrive late or out of the restaurant hours. Being connected to a restaurant you can just walk right out of your room to the restaurant they have a full bar and amazing food so you really don't have to get in your car unless you need to go to Food Lion which is a three minute drive from Barry's ( also 2 gas stations - a Hardee's - Dunkin' - and Mexican restaurant ) all next to eachother just 3 minutes away!!! The food was great and on weekends they have DJs and live music. It's literally right on the water so fishing definitely available they have a nice dock that goes out for views fishing and even can grab a drink and just sit and watch the sun set. Now you've got to go into this place with the right frame of mind, it's not one of those fancy on the water restaurants over in Duck or Kitty Hawk. They bill themselves as a seafood and steak house but it seems to be a bit more of a dive bar with steaks and seafood. The pictures on their website make it look way fancier than it is. It is a very friendly to bikers and has a bunch of biker items in the restaurant/bar. It was also a biker week when we went and there were a bunch of bikes in parking lot. Maybe I'm off on the vibe as we did only eat at the bar so maybe the rest of the restaurant has a different feel. Regardless though the food was surprisingly good, the service friendly and fast and the place super clean. Whenever a restaurant has a bunch of tchotchkes there is usually a bunch of dust built up but not here! The bathrooms were also super clean! We ordered a couple of appetizers wasabi bites and crab balls. Both were delicious. The wasabi bites were new to me, I doubt they make them but I've never seen them before. We had a great time hanging out at the bar with a number of locals and ended up having friends in common with people to either side of us! Small world!! read more

Great little place on the way to Corona! Nothing fancy, but very nice! Stopped in to stay the night & Beat The traffic on Saturday Morning going into Corona! Older motel, but it's been remodeled and kept up very well. Very Clean! For Reservations the Staff was prompt calling us back and very friendly! Reasonable prices, we had a 3 bedroom unit for $175.00. Went to the restaurant for dinner and all of our meals were great! Outside Waterfront dining was a great start to our vacation! Crab cake & hush puppies were delicious! They Even have a few RV spots that are on the canal. Tiki Bar looked nice but wasn't open! I Would give 5 stars if they had a pool! read more

Politics and seafood do not mix. I get it, this is Trump country but being constantly bombarded with GOP flags and lawn signs while eating is a bit uncomfortable. We had the she crab soup, which was NOT authentic she crab soup. It was watery and had huge pieces of onions with a layer of film on the top. The scallop dinner we had was below average. The scallops were soggy due to the fact they were placed on a wet piece of lettuce and the fries were scant and what seemed like to us, fried twice and definitely not fresh. One star for the nice pour of whiskey my husband received and another for the view. Next time we will wait until we hit Chesapeake to grab food on our way out of the OBX. The place was a ghost town, now I see why. read more

A fantastic find?!?! I had a bad feeling when we pulled into the deserted parking lot and got the stare-down from some smokers at the entrance. If it weren't for the fact that we were in a large group and the kids were hungry I would have suggested finding another place. I don't care about atmosphere if the food is great...but this place hasn't got atmosphere OR palatable food. The crab dip and mozzarella sticks were apparently edible, though I did not partake due to gluten sensitivity. My daughter liked her pizza. So it looks like sticking to the frozen items is probably the way to go... Three out of four potatoes were completely rotten. Frankly, I couldn't bring myself to eat much of my food after that. The bite of scallop I had was a bit chewy, and the trout tasted too fishy. I nervously ate my shrimp, hoping that the alcohol I had might kill any food-borne illnesses I suspected I was eating along with them. I was actually surprised that no one in the party got food poisoning. The server was sweet, but very slow and didn't seem to understand that timing is critical when you've got several children at the table. I couldn't figure out what was keeping her so busy, because it was not at all crowded. Anyway, I could not wait to get out of there. Maybe it was an off night? I don't know, but it certainly isn't worth the risk, in my opinion. Sorry, but I won't be going anywhere near this place again. read more

A fantastic find after leaving the outer banks. Less than a mile off the main road, the best experience after one week of vacation. Great fried food, Carolina BBQ and even pizza. Dog friendly and people friendly too. Really great prices, super casual, right on the sound. read more

Barry's restaurant was such a disappointment. The one Yelp review that existed before my posting was so false and must have been posted by the owner, relative, or plastered patron. This place is not kid friendly, has really bad food, extremely bad service, but likely has a nice view on a sunny day. However, the incompetent waitress was a very nice person. I recommend you do not go to this restaurant if you have any appreciation for good food. read more

I am all about supporting local. Took over an hour to get appetizers. Asked for plates to share. 20 minutes later she brought 4 plates we had six in the party. Did not have enough menus for everyone. The shrimp was way over cooked the crab dip was cold. The chicken wings were decent. The side salad was served in a cup you serve soup in. The oyster dinner was fried hard like rocks...the rare steak was not seared. Another person in the party order med ribeye and it was rare. We noticed our waitress spent most the evening hanging outside on the deck smoking and talking. I remember when the food was good and staff was good. Won't go back or recommend. I have visited Barry's on numerous occasions the past couple of years. I have always found the service good, the food even better. Lodging wise I know the rooms have been remodeled. In fact I have one contractor who will only stay at Barry's when he is in the area. Personally I like the location and find it relaxing to sit on the deck after a meal. read more

We booked a room here spur of the moment so we could get a head start on our Labor Day Weekend vacation. They were more than accommodating for our late arrival. We ended up getting in really late because of some road construction we kept encountering on our way down. I would love to give it more stars but there were some hiccups. We were told that the door would be unlocked and the key inside the room for us. It wasn't so I had to call a number I saw listed on the door and was a little reprimanded by the person on the other end telling me that I wasn't supposed to be there until the next night. I'm not sure what the mixup was but he came and got us into our room. The second hiccup was that the bed in the room. We stayed in the "Pirate" room. It was quaint and homey but was a little overcrowded with furniture in the room. There was a giant hole in the middle of the bed and me and husband kept rolling into it all night. That bed really needs to be replaced. The third and final hiccup was the shower. Although the bathroom looked like it had been upgraded the water did not drain in the shower but just collected in the bottom. After 15 minutes it was still there. We decided to take our coffee out to the pier and watch the sun come up. That was the best part. When we went back to the room the water had finally drained but my husband passed on taking a shower. There was no one there for check out when we left at 10 so we left the key in the room and left. My card had never been charged for the room so I reached out to them to make sure they had everything they needed. Like I said it's a cute place just need to fix the bed and shower in the pirate room, hopefully the other rooms don't have those problems. read more

We stopped by for Barry's Sunday Steamed Shrimp special. OMG - it was as good as it gets! Fresh local shrimp steamed to perfection!!

We returned to our room around 10pm on our first night to find a large roach about the size of my thumb in front of the bathroom door. My wife refused to stay another minute with a giant cockroach crawling around the room, so we packed our things. I called Barry's emergency line - no answer. I called Donna's emergency line and explained why we were checking out. Her huffy response, "We don't have cockroaches!" I walked into the bar and the bartender helped me check out. She took down my telephone number and left a note for Barry and Donna to call me in the morning, but they never called. I stopped by Monday afternoon on the way home in an attempt to recover some of my money, but they were closed. I called them Tuesday morning, and they never returned my call. They charged me $255.75 for the full weekend and never refunded any of my money. This run-down excuse for a roach motel deserves LESS THAN one star!!! My wife and I had booked a full weekend (Friday-Monday) in August 2014. We checked in around 3pm on Friday afternoon to the "Pirate Room". The bed was comfortable, but the room did not have a dresser for our clothes - just a small rod hanging on the wall behind the door to hang up clothes. We were expected to live out of our suitcases for the entire weekend. The room was small, cramped, and crammed with too much pirate stuff. The TV reception was snowy on all channels. Wi-Fi Internet access was non-existent. The only amenities in the room were a mini-fridge and a microwave oven outside the bathroom door. The room was so crowded with pirate crap there was only a narrow path from the front door past the foot of the bed to the bathroom. We searched for the "private beach" mentioned on their website without success. We found a dilapidated dock and a boat ramp behind the restaurant/bar/motel. Fortunately, my wife and I were able to find a room at the Hilton Garden Inn in Kitty Hawk that night after we checked out of Walnut Island. read more

But if you like a party, good music, ice cold beer, and a friendly staff, this is the place to be! The food is great, not gourmet, but well above the norm for bar food! I understand that this is, apparently, just for the Restaurant, but I have to take the WHOLE of Barry's into account for my review. My husband and I have been down to Barry's many times over the last few years. Sometimes for events, sometimes for fun with friends, and sometimes to just be. I have to say that the 2 rooms we stayed in over 2 visits were nice, if somewhat over-priced (understandable since it was a holiday), and the room service was fantastic. The campsites offered are wonderful and we have stayed with some friends in their camper quite a few times. As for the restaurant, it seems to depend on what kind of night you catch them on. The food is VERY pricey (about what you'd expect for a resort), but is in no way worth it. They don't seem to be able to cook a steak as requested, they are frequently out of shrimp, the mozzarella sticks taste like a knock off store brand and the french fries either come over-done or under-cooked. The bar pricing is exceedingly high and unless you are well known (either a local or a regular) your service will be severely lacking. Thankfully, we have only eaten in the restaurant two times and learned enough from the experience never to repeat it again. So why the four stars? Because of Barry's as a WHOLE! If they could get some decent staff in the restaurant and bar, the place has the ABILITY to be a complete hit! The waitresses and bar-staff need to understand what customer service actually is and they need to up the quality of their food a little bit and get someone in there who knows how to actually cook. We have a really good friend that can't understand it - he says he has eaten there and the food has been great and then goes back two weeks later and it's awful. There is no consistency. Please Please PLEASE, get some decent staff and better quality food in here and you have a complete WINNER! read more

This restaurant is being given 2 stars. One is for the gorgeous view and the other is for the tired and overworked server we had. This was our 2nd visit to Barry's. The first was in warm weather and we sat outside, had shrimp and some beers and watched the sun set. It was pleasant outside but it is clearly a locals establishment, and I didn't find anyone who was very friendly to the non-locals. Our second trip was on Mother's Day, after returning from OBX. It was too cold to sit outside. Unfortunately we were sitting close to a family with young children, and the child had a movie playing on a phone so loud, I couldn't even talk to my husband. Not really the restaurant's fault, rather rudeness on the part of the the family, but that started us off on the wrong foot. Service was terribly slow. I asked for a half-carafe of wine, Merlot, on the menu, clearly for $4.50 a glass or $7.95 for the half-carafe. 10 minutes later, the server came back and said I couldn't get a half-carafe, it was only for White Zinfandel. I showed her what it said on the menu and they would not accommodate me, despite the menu (If you have it on the menu, and then won't offer it, take it off)!! Finally we got our drinks and I ordered wings. 10 minutes later the server came back and said they were out of wings. Really?!? So, she gave me another menu, and I had to wait another 10 minutes. I was starving by then, but I was afraid it would take way too long to get a meal-we'd already been there so long- so I just ordered She-Crab soup-that's all I ended up with, and I was hungry. It was decent, but nothing I'd go back for given the lack of accommodation and service to paying customers. In the meantime, Barry, the owner came out to talk to the people at the next table. Clearly they knew each other and chatted about the Outer Banks Bike Week. It just drove home the point that the restaurant really only caters to the regulars. I think the most appalling was the chatter among the employees when we were the only table left, as if we couldn't hear them, LOL. One was asking the server if we'd finished eating and then if we'd paid yet. When the server said that yes, we'd paid, the response was "Good, now we can get out of here". So, I get that. Customer service was not an option with them, but going home was. Since we were the only other people in the restaurant, I think it would have been a nice gesture for the owner to have said to us, "hi, thanks for coming", but he never looked our way, nor did he say anything as we walked out the door. We will NEVER go back, and that's too bad, because we'd talked about riding our Harley Road King down there for lunch. Instead, we'll go to Coinjock Marina. They are so nice there. read more

Ive been going there for years, for bike week! Ive always found them very friendly, from the staff to Barry, himself! I have read the reviews and have come to the conclusion, that most people must have had a bad day to start off with! I was not a local, when I started going there and they always were very friendly to me and the folks I was with! Ive always had the BBQ sandwich, which Barry makes himself! I do intend on trying other things, especially the seafood! I moved to Currituck a month ago and go there, for lunch with my son, or, the weekends, when we are riding! Barry always comes out and talks to everyone sitting in his restaurant! The staff is always accommodating! Kudos to you Barry!
