Aberdeen is a Hampton Roads staple. Opened in 1966 I have very fond memories of visiting for the holidays. Very old school, rustic barn style atmosphere. Visited on Mother's Day and thankfully we had a reservation because the line was out the door. Our server was very attentive despite having multiple large parties. There is a person for water, and bread so no wait no any of those things. We did have to wait 30 minutes for our main entree but that was to be expected on a busy holiday. There was an automatic gratuity of 20%. Not sure if that was because of the holiday or a set thing. Ordered the sirloin with mash and seafood Mac which was the star of the show. Rich and perfectly crusted on top. Also had the Cowboy rib eye and they picked the largest cut I've ever seen. Honestly can't go wrong with any of the steaks. There is a glass refrigerator by the front entrance where you can choose your steak and they have deals on Tomahawks on Tuesday and Wednesday. They have plenty of happy hour options and during the weekend too which is becoming more rare. I recommend Aberdeen to all my friends who visit from out of town looking for a steakhouse. read more

A local family owned steakhouse and seafood. The size of this restaurant is deceiving from the outside. Inside it is very large with small rooms scattered throughout. Tables are relatively close together. At your table is a container of cheese dip and sesame crackers. The server quickly brought us a delicious loaf of hot bread. They have a large wine and cocktail menu featuring fancy cocktails . We shared a prime rib which came with a delicious house salad (or Caesar Salad). The salad was delicious and large so we opted for an additional salad as one of our 2 sides and also a baked potato. The menu states the potato's are 1 lb. And I can attest to the biggest potato I've ever had. The 14 ounce prime rib ($59) was thick cut and melts in your mouth. Even splitting it we could not eat it all. Our server was so friendly and helpful. She kept checking on us throughout our meal. The desserts looked amazing but sadly we could not eat anything else. Note: if it is your birthday, the menu says you get a free dessert and a $30 gift card to use on your next visit. There were several birthday parties in private rooms while we were there. We showed up for a 7:15 reservation and didn't get our food until almost 9:00. I should have known coming to a steakhouse with salt and pepper shakers on the table was a red flag. Halfway through our seating our waiter, Conner, informed us that the kitchen was holding tickets because the cooks were overwhelmed. Easy solution: take out seats and stop cramming customers into the restaurant -- especially when you're seating people next to Christmas trees that are somehow still up in March. The steaks were completely flavorless, and for a price of $300 this place is a joke. Go to Texas Roadhouse and you'll get better food. Visited on Mother's Day night and unfortunately the wait was extremely long, even with reservations. The restaurant was very crowded and the delay definitely took away from the experience. The holiday drink I tried was the margarita that was very good!! The atmosphere was definitely festive Lively for a Wednesday night parking was available we dined with other couples as well and everybody seemed to have a great time. Came in for happy hour for the first time and tried both the raw oysters and the Oysters Rockefeller, both were solid. Oh and the she-crab soup was a really nice surprise, we all really enjoyed it! I also ordered an espresso martini, which was really good and definitely a highlight of the visit. Our server, Jeff, was friendly and personable, but the attentiveness just wasn't quite there. A couple of minor requests were forgotten, and two of our orders never made it in. We eventually told him not to worry about it, but it did take away from the overall experience. Aberdeen is one of those restaurant that's a Va Beach staple. I've been coming here for over 20 years now and nothing has changed, from the menu to the decor lol! I guess you have to appreciate the timelessness. The food is a hit or miss. Sometimes it's good and sometimes it's just blah. It can be overly salty or seafood over cooked. I had broccoli and they steamed the heck out of it. Crab cake is loaded, hardly no fillers. So that's a plus. The staff is always so nice, so I always appreciate the customer service. Met a friend from out of town here for dinner. Parking is a tight and a literal nightmare. This is a casual steakhouse and inside it's very jam-packed/tight.. seating is literally on top of each other. The hostess took us to our seats, but our table had leftovers from another table on it. Anyways, our server was nice. I wasn't too hungry. So, I had the recommended she crab soup, which was tasty... especially since I'm not typically a fan of chowder-like soups. Went here to celebrate an old friend's birthday. I have to admit that I was slightly disappointed considering past experiences. We started with the escargot, delicious. I haven't had escargot in years and I enjoyed Aberdeen Barn's take on it. Would probably order it again. Mike had the prime rib and he was clearly pleased by it. I must admit that it did look delicious. Sides were Caesar salad and fries. I ordered the fried grouper and shrimp dish. I was a bit disappointed as the dish was rather greasy (there is a difference between greasy and fried) and it was crazy salty. Sides were a house salad (no tomato or onion my request) and broccoli. The salad looked great on the top but underneath it was filled with anemic lettuce that had edges that have turned gross red. Honestly, I'm not sure how someone could plate that old lettuce and think it was ok to serve. Again, I've been here numerous times (done a terrible job of checking in on Yelp) but have most certainly been here more than I've checked in. I feel bad for leaving a not so favorable review, but I have hope that Aberdeen Barn will take better care with their salads. read more

Finally found it! And what is not to like about this place! You can tell it's been here for years and local favorite! Just by the decore it really has a nice cabin &steak house feel! I have been looking for a place that has best tasting "Prime Rib" that's juicy, tender and melt in your mouth. And this is the spot! I ordered the 14oz and WOW it was huge. I don't care what it costs as long as it's perfect! And it was definitely perfect. The Aujus dipping sauce was perfect. My baked potato was perfect! My Cesar Salad was good but the dressing a little to lemony. I definitely had a to go bag! I am very happy I found the perfect place for Prime Rib. My wife and I ate here last night and we were excited they offered a tomahawk steak as we have eaten these at other restaurants. It took almost 30 minutes for us to even get drinks at our table, the service was crazy slow. Our waiter was extremely apologetic, offering a "sorry" several times. The outside edges of the steak were decent, but literally after the first three bites it was horrible. We have had better steaks at Texas steakhouse! There is no way to justify $200 for what it's was. We asked for a box so that we could bring the rest home to feed our dogs, true story. Crackers and cheese dip are provided at table and they serve nice warm loaf of bread before your meal. While they serve steak here, we were here for the seafood and the 1lb lobster tail (note the tail is 1lb and not the lobster). Other folks had seafood (fish & chips and crab cake). Their crab cake was definitely one of the better ones I've ever had. Mostly crab and not a lot of filler. Got the 1lb lobster tail grilled. It was big but not the biggest I've ever had. She went the extra mile to ensure we had an unforgettable dining experience and a one of a kind anniversary dinner. They are lucky to have someone like her on the team because we've never had service that compared to hers. We were seated at a corner booth in the back of the bar area and the ambiance could not have been more perfect for an anniversary. The prime rib was very tasty and a great value-- I thought a $12 baked potato would be underwhelming but it was fluffy and well seasoned. My son absolutely devoured the strip steak, the charcoal rib eye was beyond flavorful, and the lobster add on was so good we ordered an extra. We went on Valentine's Day. They booked a BUNCH of people at the same time waiting. I was surprised it went so smooth. The wait staff worked together as a team and they got all of the people in and settled and they were running around and zero stress. The atmosphere of this place is not wildly fancy, but has a hint of refinement. The menu prices are very expensive, but you get what you pay for! Starting out, you get free crackers + cheese-whiz esque spread. I was personally not a fan of the cheese but others at the table were. You also get free bread, also average. The drinks were all super yummy- I had the AB cosmo which is a classic beverage, but I also tried the peach pie crush which surprisingly tasted just like a piece of pie- yum! Everyone loved their meals- I personally had the petite filet with mashed potatoes. The meat was perfectly cooked and delicious. The mashed potatoes were too salty for my liking, but passable. My sister loved her loaded mashed potatoes! As for the Key Lime pie, those who tried it said it left things to be desired. Our waiter, although nice, took a while to come back and even take our food orders. Once he did come back, we ordered the oyster Rockefeller to try after having the waiter recommend it. I really wanted to love this as I love oyster Rockefeller but the taste was just off. Even putting lemon and hot sauce it had a weird taste to it. My husband only had one. My salad then came out and it seemed very much thrown on a plate. For a house salad, you expect cheese, onions, croutons, tomatoes, carrots, dressing. It had 3 ingredients... lettuce, tomatoes, and onions. It did have a very large boiled egg on the side which I don't care for anyways. The ranch however tasted good, I couldn't tell if this was house made or not. When our dinner entrees arrived, this is where I felt things lacked. My loaded baked potato was not hot. It was very lukewarm which was odd to me. The potato wasn't salted which seemed off to me. I had the salmon with crab. The crab and sauce I did not care for. The salmon tasted okay. My husband was very happy with his steak, I did taste it but in my personal opinion, it reminded me a lot of Texas Roadhouse steak. For the price alone, I would not come back. We got a champagne toast and a free cheesecake for our anniversary. The cheese and pretzels are an interesting starter. Then you get your appetizers. We got the lollipop lamb chops and she crab soup. The soup was a little too buttery for me, but it was still yummy with good crab chunks. The lamb came with a mint jelly, these were tasty. The baked rockafellar oysters were one of my favorites of the night, loaded with a nice and creamy sauce with cheese. We got bread, then our Caesar salad, both tasty. The Ambiance was nice and bright. The service is mediocre the waitress kept saying she's 'new' throughout our dinner there. Our food was brought out while we had several dishes left on table that needed to be cleared out. The table had too many condiments and there was no room for our food. NOW the food, was a disappointment, the bread , which was served nice and hot but tasted like 'old yeast' , my prime rib looked gray and tasted as if it was boiled, and unseasoned. Here is where it gets bad......... we ordered appetizer and then before it arrives we order entrees. Filet and lobster tail for her NY Strip and stuffed shrimp for myself. It took nearly 35 minutes for food to arrive, and based on looks it was sitting in hot window a while, in addition my sides didn't come with, had to get after, the lobster tail broiled into the shell, even the replacement one was over cooked. I ordered the Chicken Parm as an entrée and the portion size was almost assigned as the table! I was only able to get through a small part before feeling full. I got the Shecrab soup, fried flounder, fried shrimp, sweet potato casserole and broccoli. The flounder was burnt, and the sweet potato casserole was watery with a lot of marshmallows on top to hide the fact that it was watered down, and the broccoli was extremely salty. I didn't eat any of it. I only ate the shecrab soup, which was tasty until we were getting ready to leave, and I went to the bathroom to vomit it all up. To make things worse, I was sick for the rest of the evening, and I only ate the soup. I believe I had food poisoning. We will not be visiting this establishment again. Honestly easily the most disappointing meal I've had in VA state. Steak was severely overcooked (asked for medium rare and got Medium Well - Well Done, see photo) when we couldn't even inform the waiter because we spent half the night trying to wave him down. The waiter put in the wrong order for my friend, she asked for a 10 ounce prime rib and loaded mashed potatoes and was given/charged for 14 ounce prime rib and simple mashed potatoes. Normally it wouldn't be a big deal, but considering she's paying over +$100 for her meal, I'd expect the order to at least be correct. When my other friend asked for Gus' Blue sirloin, he immediately told her he "wouldn't recommend that" that it would be "lean and chewy." He spent easily 2 minutes attempting to upsell her, so much so, he never asked how she would like her meat cooked and only came back 20 minutes later when he was putting an order that was incorrect. He would drop off the meal and immediately run away, not even giving us the chance to ask for sauces or anything else. What can I say, this resturant literally said what I believe in. I dislike A La Carte resturants. Ever since my first experience at an A La Carte resturant never went back to one. That being said, this resturant is all about inclusion vs. separation. My wife had house Salid, my son had Ribeye, and I had the Prime rib. Everyone enjoyed their meal. What we noticed is many came here for special occasions like we. My son was being deployed and we were not going to spend time for his Birthday so we decided to celebrate early. The server asked what was the occasion and we told him about my son's birthday. Not even thinking about it, the server brought my son a dessert with a candle in it after our meal. It made his day and wife and I. It was a special touch that we did not anticipate. They did add a 20% gratuity to the bill but we gave more do to the special attention they gave us. I enjoyed redturants that give the extra hospitality that customers deserve. Great food and great employees, must try. If I had to pick a negative, for me, it was the live music.
