It was Tuesday, April 7th, 2026 and my Sister's Birthday. I called earlier in the day and asked about a reservation for myself, my Sister and her Son who is a Gulf Veteran with a Comfort companion named Otter. I informed the Receptionist that they could sit us anywhere and that the medium sized Ridgeback would be very disciplined and laying down the entire meal (which she did). When we arrived, the Greeters (both the Server and a Gentleman running the door) kindly welcomed us. The Server (Becca R.) was ready to seat us for our 8pm reservation. Upon taking us to the table, I thanked her and noticed that she or someone had recognized my earlier birthday mention for my reservation, and thus, had the menus printed out in blue and with Happy Birthday at the top. Awesome recognition...!!! The meal was spectacular (Burger special, Pork Rib Eye and Crab Cakes with a couple orders of She-Crab Soup). I read the reviews on Social Media and noticed your awards for your Creme Brulee. My Sister's favorite dessert is Creme Brulee so I thought I hit a Home Run...!!! However, my Sister said she was full from her Soup and Burger so she wouldn't enjoy the Brulee like she wanted to. I told her that she will get a rain check dinner and maybe order the Creme Brulee first...!!! The service and ambience of your Restaurant was excellent. We sat in the front at a corner side table and it was perfect. The Co-Owner delivered part of our order with Becca and they were both very professional. Hearing that you've been in business since 2000, I can see why you are still in operation (despite the Great Recession and Covid 19). CONGRATULATIONS to your long lasting success. not my favorite, very underwhelming when it comes to the food. everything seemed unseasoned, and very bland. the burgers are extremely dry as well as their steaks. service is okay, they do their job and thats all you can ask for i guess. i don't have much to say on dining setting, could be cleaner and have much more room. bartender was really weird, betsy i believe her name was. seemed as though she had a couple drinks herself, very playful and overstepping with my husband when he was ordering us drinks. would not recommend this for a family outing or a dinner with your spouse, with a bartender and service like that. read more

Cobalt Grille is an upscale restaurant yet it has an inviting ambience. The staff was pleasant, the soft and warm lighting set the mood, the cleanliness and charming decor made it comfortable and cozy. Tonight was not over crowded or very loud. Probably because it's the calm before the storm as Valentine's Day is tomorrow. I enjoyed my entire meal starting with the oven baked goat cheese. We ate it all. My chicken penne pasta with a champagne cream sauce was tasty. The diced chicken was a little over cooked for my liking but my meal came out stifling hot and creamy. I topped my meal off with the molten lava cake which was the perfect temperature and had a firm outer texture with a warm, gooey, liquid chocolate filling. It paired perfectly with the espresso ice cream and strawberries and pineapple. The service was speedy, accurate and our waiter Evan N. was attentive and had a fun personality. The after dinner drink the Flaming Spanish coffee my husband ordered was entertaining as Evan lit it on fire. I look forward to trying more meals here. read more

12/10 experience at Cobalt :) I was in town on a business trip and one of my colleagues recommended Cobalt grille. I sat at the bar and the bartenders were extremely friendly (shout out to Kendall!!) everything on the menu looked amazing, and Kendall gave great recommendations. I ended up getting the she crab soup, beef carpaccio, and the blackened tuna special. She crab soup was excellent, one of the best I've had in years; it had sherry and bourbon in it, tons of lump crab meat, and came out HOT! I can't tell you how many times I've ordered soup out and the soup was lukewarm or just cold. Beef carpaccio was delicious too, don't know if I personally would order again due to the truffle oil (personal preference) but I'm glad I tried it! My favorite part was the briny capers with the beef, soooo good. However, the blackened tuna was the star of the show; it came perfectly medium rare on top of portobello mushroom, covered in a savory and flavorful Thai herb cream sauce. This was an entree Kendall recommended and I'm SO glad I went with it. Lovely dinner start to finish and the cocktails were incredible too (my favorite being the smoked pecan old fashioned!) I'm not accustomed to giving a review of 5 for my first time in a restaurant, but this place deserved it. I had the salmon and crab special with broccoli and potatoes--absolutely delicious. I also had the appetizer, which was scallops over spinach; that is a must-have if you enjoy seafood. The only problem was the lady behind us, who seemed to have never learned about an inside voice. Otherwise this restaurant is fantastic, and the food was great. The atmosphere took a hit because of how loud this lady was behind us; you could literally hear her from a quarter mile away. I learned all about her car--C6. But that shouldn't take anything away from this place--the food is delicious. Perhaps it was the best piece of salmon I've had in a while. read more

Yum! What a pleasant surprise. This has been on the list for a while. When Butcher's Son all but kicked us out we came here last minute for happy hour. They couldn't have been nicer to us and have a fabulous menu with tons of options and 30% off all appetizers! Well, they probably have 20 appetizers/salads to choose from so I was thrilled. My husband and father-in-law chose the burger with fries - delicious and served on a large wooden board (I love when places do this) and the server was excellent and attentive about getting us extra sauces and pickles on request. I chose their chopped salad and added grilled chicken and extra chopped tomatoes. All arrived wonderfully prepared and fresh and the salad was spectacular. My mother-in-law chose their sliders and did all crispy chicken sliders but they had some wonderful options like bleu cheese, mushroom and Swiss, classic, etc. They looked SO good - a huge portion with tons of fries as well. Their dinner menu looks very good too - and lots of desserts available. We'll be back again and again if this first visit was any indication! I cannot believe I have not posted a review on COBALT yet. We go here quite often and we have also had parties here. Always great service. This is my friends hang out place. Great place for drinks, food and hanging out. We get different drinks every time we go. They are going to have the perfect drink for you. I like the drink menu because it even tells you what exactly is in the drink. I am a picky Gin drinker and they have my favorite. The Flower box drink has The Botanist gin which is one of my favorite. It's a must try if your a Gin drinker. They have a full bar. Enjoy. The burgers are always good. They use quality beef and the bun is light, fluffy and buttery good. I have had a lot of the menu over the years. The pasta is hot and like comfort food. The soups are pretty good. a little salty for my taste but sometimes I'm in the mood for soup. The fries are like home fries and my whole group loves them. Their food has been consistently good. So if you're looking for a nice place to fellowship with family or friends and want a great drink and good food this is your place to be. read more

Edit: I found a long hair in my leftovers from my meal. I have to edit my review bc this is DISGUSTING and so disappointing. Service was good. Only complaint I have is we arrived for our 5:30 PM reservation on Saturday expecting to be able to order from the happy hour menu...only to be told we had to be seated in a certain area to be able to order from that menu (which we were not). That detail is not listed on the online menu. We were, however, offered the opportunity to move to the section where we could order from the menu. Anyway, our server, Leanne, was very pleasant and professional. She helped decide on the menu as it was our first time. I ordered the chicken penne pasta, hubby ordered the smokehouse burger and my MIL ordered the beef Wellington. Our food was great except my MIL food came out cold. Service was fast, server was nice and very patient since we took some time to figure out what to order. We didn't like our booth, so we opted to move to another table with no issues whatsoever. It was very light evening, with a few parties dining in the back room, very quiet, conversations went on seamlessly. Now the food... the she crab soup was too soupy (liquid and runny) as opposed to a more chowder thick like soup base. I was not a fan, you could hardly see any crab meat. It would have been better if they added more visible extenders like celery, onions, chopped red peppers along with the crab meat to make it more delightful to consume. But to each his own. I'm not a fan. As for the duck, I asked for it to be cooked in medium temperature, boy, was I wrong, it should have been medium well or well done. It was savory and the concept of having that apple sauce was a good idea, but I finished it but again, I'm not a fan. My friends had the branzino and salmon which appeared nicely cooked, the skin was left crunchy, that was a good choice. The classic burger had a lot of fries and served on a nice wooden platter. Ordered: Fried green tomatoes Petite filet mignon Both of our filets weren't prepared as ordered but they weren't so raw we couldn't eat it, one was close. I know a lot of chefs are very stuck in how they want to prepare a meal, but if you ask it to be prepared a certain way because that's how you're okay to eat it then that should be honored. The servers were very good and attentive and the ambiance was nice. It was a quiet rainy evening so guessing it's probably a lot louder when the weather isn't keeping everyone at home. The décor is old-fashioned and outdated. Servers constantly walk by the tables carrying large trays filled with glasses and silverware, creating a hectic atmosphere. The food was less than mediocre, and the overall experience was unpleasant. The steak was chewy and tasted artificial, the burger just as disappointing. Long time lurker, first time diner. My mom and I came here to try out their food. I got a cup of she crab soup, and I'm a big fan of risotto so I ordered the Shrimp & Scallops Risotto. My mom ordered the Short Ribs Risotto. I'm not a fan of the she crab soup. It was sweet like sugary so I felt weird coming from a soup. The amount of crab meat was decent however. The Shrimp and Scallop risotto howerer, is phenomenal. The shrimp might need more salt but it was very fresh and huge. The scallop is cooked perfectly and buttery. The risotto is chessy and thicc. It was also mixed with dried tomato and spinach, which give the whole dish more flavor. The potion is also generous and I just finished the seafood and took the rest of the risotto home and made 2 meals out of it. The short rib risotto is not bad. The demi glaze has a strong aroma of red wine, the risotto is very mushroom-ish and also cheesy like the shrimp & scallop one. The only complaint is the short rib has no fat in it so it was kinda rubbery. I'd suggest them to use the meat near the bones cuz most of the time they come with fat and the meat will be more juicy and tender. We finished off with a tiramisu to share, which is awesome. It is not too sweet like I prefer, and the amount is fair for $10. There's a ladyfinger stuck out for us to dip and eat, and I've never tried that. Needless to say I learned a new way to eat my tiramisu and it was interesting! Overall the food was great but there can be some improvement on certain food. Another reason I can't give out all 5 star was the price. I've had seafood and steak dishes just as good or better but it's not $39-42 for just the dish with no sides and stuff. From walking in the door to paying the bill, it was a refreshing experience and delicious meal.

I'm not sure why, but when I heard "Grille" I didn't think this place would be as good as it turned out to be! Cobalt Grille was a more upscale than I imagined. It was a very elegant place in my opinion! The vibes were immaculate. Perfect for a date night, celebration or just a night out with friends/family. The environment I would was was a little loud, as the restaurant was completely full. We had a party of 8 and the seating was a little tight between other parties, however I will say after having the food and the service from the staff, I completely did not mind haha. Our waiter was perfection. He was serving so many other tables and was very still very accommodating despite our big party. We ordered a Flaming Spanish Coffee (unfortunately I didn't get a picture of this!) and he had never served it himself before but took the time to learn how so he could do it for our table! He saw us struggling to take a selfie as well and he helped us out by taking it for us too :) As for the food, everything, and I mean everything, we had and ordered was exquisite! The Beef Carpaccio had the option to be served with a mini cooking stone which I thought was unique (I've never been offered this before!). The beef carpaccio was seasoned to perfection! I wanted to order more. The she crab soup was perfectly creamy and loaded with chunks of crab, a little spicy but still delicious! My entree was the Beef Short Rib and this came with seasoned risotto and seasoned veggies. This entree was so good, I didn't even need my knife to cut the beef because it was so tender! The veggies were a little too seasoned for me BUT when paired with the risotto and beef, it was the perfect harmony. The combination was amazing, nothing was dry and the flavors itself were exquisite! I was so full after eating half but my partner loved it so much he ate the rest even after eating his dish haha. Lastly, the desserts. We had the Catalin Dulce de Leche cream, puff pastry & nutella sauce and it was sheer perfection. The puff pastry was so flaky and delicate, and again, I didn't need a knife to cut through this! It was rich and sweet but not too overwhelming. As was the crème brûlée cheesecake pictured and the coconut cake (not pictured)! Everything was so delicate yet filling. It was the perfect way to end the night. I loved everything about this place! The "roasted" potatoes were actually fried chunks, possibly a frozen product. Fish and chips decent but small. I felt like this was the place to be for the senior community. And it was wonderful. Everyone came in early and left early, and we were the loud ones that stayed for multiple drinks. The drinks were STRONG. so careful. Delicious though. We started with the fried mozzarella, portobello fries, house salad, and crab cakes to start. Not only were the apps delicious, the salads that came with them were good. I got the shrimp and scallop risotto and it was good. A bit undercooked risotto, but the seafood was incredible. Perfectly cooked. Other people got the beef Wellington and filet, and it was demolished. Dessert was honestly a bit of a letdown. We tried the chocolate cake, chocolate chip crème brûlée, coconut cake, and tres leches. The standout was the crème brûlée, everything else was meh. Fine, but not phenomenal. Cobalt Grille is a staple for easy-going fine dining utilizing fresh local ingredients (often from the chef's home garden) in Virginia Beach and for good reason. They offer consistently good food, good service and elevated fare in a relaxed yet refined setting. Many people go to Cobalt for date night, but it's also a really good option for lunch with reasonable prices, and I feel like you get a lot for what you pay. We had lunch there on a recent Saturday and tried the Portobella Fries appetizer. Those were portobella mushroom wedges coated in panko, fried and served with a couple dipping sauces including ginger-maple ponzu and chipotle ranch. I was surprised by how well the mushroom wedges kept their shape and the panko was nice and golden-crispy on the outside. Dipping sauces were yummy. My only thought is that the breading and sauce maybe overshadow the mushroom flavor a little--but I am a huge mushroom lover, so might be just me. For someone who is not crazy about mushrooms, this might be a nice way to expand the tastebuds. I had the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich and it was on point! Perfect crispy skin on a good size chicken breast, moist and juicy on the inside. LTM and pickles on a brioche bun...all delish. I opted for a side salad to go with and it was also very good, simple and fresh. My guests ordered the Burrata Caprese Salad and the Vegan Veggie Stack respectively. Both got high marks and clean plates. One comment with the veggie stack is that it comes with a fair amount of fresh tomato and garlic sauce around the stack so it might have been nice to have some fresh bread or something to sop up the leftover goodness with. read more

The food and service are great! It's been years since I've dined here years ago, but this visit was my first lunchtime visit. It did not disappoint. The she crab soup is a must. They even place a dollop of lump crab in the middle of the soup - great presentation. The decor gives a cozy feel, making the atmosphere so inviting. The server answered our questions without issue. The special was an open-face shrimp po'boy...yummy!! It had sautéed red cabbage which was the perfect complement to the shrimp. It's been 2 years and there have been some changes. But it is still delicious as always. I was there for a happy hour - shocking - on a Tuesday night which is also their burger night. It was a tough call but we decided to share an appetizer and a burger. The HH structure has changed and it is now 30% off appetizers. We got the scallop appetizer which was very good but maybe a bit too salty. Good presentation. Then we split the Cobalt Bleu and it was cooked a perfect medium with LOTS of blue cheese. You got your option of a side of fries, fruit or side salad. Ummm....who are you kidding.....bring on the fries. I absolutely loved that the burger was split for us when they brought it. Awesome customer service and presentation. The burger was delicious but you definitely have to like blue cheese. I just wish the bun was toasted....I found it a bit dry. And I wish the scallop appetizer came with 4 and not 3....much easier to share. But I feel that way about all appetizers needing to come in an even number. Kendall is still there and was wonderful. Had reservations here for a birthday dinner on a Thursday and there were a few people there. We had a big table and our server was awesome and attentive. She took our drink orders right away and we also ordered some apps to start everything was delicious, i ordered the carpaccio which I've never had before. You can eat it raw or they offered a hot stone to sear the meat on. We tried it both ways and both were good so it's all everyone's preference. Our dinner ordered came out soon after. I got the short rib with risotto and my husband got the cobalt blue burger. The burger came out on a wooden cutting board and he upgraded his fries to the truffle fries. The burger was cooked perfectly to medium rare and the truffle fries were on point. I had to keep stealing some. I got the short rib which was delicious. It was soft and tender, not too salty like some others I've tried in the past. It went perfectly with the mushroom risotto. We also ordered dessert..cuz there's always room for dessert!! I ordered the sticky toffee pudding which was really good and paired perfectly with my cup of coffee. Awesome restaurant, the food is delicious and the staff is super friendly and welcoming. We had flown into town to visit relatives for Thanksgiving. We were staying in an Airbnb, but did not want to make the effort to cook the entire Thanksgiving meal, so I ordered a full Thanksgiving meal as takeout from the Cobalt Grille. We have done Thanksgiving like this before, and usually you get a pan of turkey, a pan of stuffing, a pan of mashed potatoes, etc. The Cobalt Grille gave you everything already pre-plated, so in each container was a scoop of potatoes, a scoop of stuffing, some turkey, etc. Their menu included soup, and those were packaged in separate containers, as were the desserts. Although I understand why they may give the main meal to you that way, that's not an efficient way to reheat everything the next day, (as we had to pick everything up on Wednesday). So on Thanksgiving morning, I had to take apart all the separate meals and put all the potatoes in a dish, all the stuffing in a dish, all the turkey in a dish, and then place them the oven to heat. So that was a little annoying, but not insurmountable. All the food was amazing, and we really enjoyed our meals. Normally, I don't serve soup with my Thanksgiving meal, but we put those to the side and had them later as more of a snack, since we had been so full from our regular meal. I would definitely consider using them again where we to be back in town next Thanksgiving. read more

Not sure what all the good reviews are for. The seafood risotto was so extremely bland it had zero flavor but the other food we had was alright. We came for the happy hour special and when we got there they sat us in the back, I was unaware we would not be able to get the special because of where we sat so we ended up spending a bit more than we should've. When I asked about it after getting the bill the waitress told us it doesn't apply because of where we were sat and wouldn't adjust our bill. read more

There was just enough time between doctors appointments for a leisurely lunch. But it had to be close, since both doctors were in the Hilltop/First Colonial area. I drove around Hilltop East & North. Nothing looked appealing. Pulling into a parking spot, I checked the menu on Cobalt Grille's Yelp Page. This restaurant was just right. It's location, on a corner in Hilltop North, allows dedicated parking spots at the side of the restaurant that are out of the mass parking for Hilltop. There are a few outside tables. But it was too hot for my taste. I chose the nice air conditioned indoor seating. There was a chalk board in the foyer with daily non-menu specials & specialty drinks. But I had already made up my mind after looking at their menu on Yelp. The Pear & Gorgonzola Salad was absolutely "to die for". It consisted of Port & rosemary poached pear, California baby spinach, tomatoes, toasted almonds, crumbled Gorgonzola with honey wholegrain mustard vinaigrette. I added a tall glass of yummy lemonade to finish off the perfect hot weather lunch. The service was exceptional. The tables and booths were far enough apart so that one could relax and have a leisurely "chill out" lunch. The noise level was almost non existent. This ambience really worked well for me on a day when I had just seen a doctor for a scary eye trauma. The lunch menu was extensive. There was something for absolutely anyone. I really don't like to eat at restaurants that have a limited menu. Cobalt Grille is now on my "go to" list of luncheon locations. In fact it's near the top of the list. Cobalt Grille is one of those local VB restaurants that had eluded me for way too long. I've heard strong word of mouth and have seen nice praise on social media. It was time for a lunch take down. The location is in the Hilltop Shoppes, sometimes referred to as Hilltop East. There is parking on the side of the building and not to far away in the front. The lot and sidewalk were clear of debris. The patio had fresh flowers in the pots. Upon entering you will see the bar that probably seats around 10 and additional seating in front. A cool waiting area in the corner with red velvet chairs. It seems obvious by looking around the have a wine focus. A large dining room is in the rear. I took a peek and it had a moderate crowd for a weekday lunch. I was not impressed with the vibe in the room and it seemed rather dull to me. The area was clean and all tables not being utilized cleared. I elected to sit on the outdoor patio on a beautiful Fall day. My order from the bar staff a Ham & Cheese w/ fried green tomatoes. Side Pear & Gorgonzola Salad w/ house dressing. Paired w/ a Pinot Noir. Beautiful colors and a fantastic meal. Necessary follow up was conducted soon after the meal arrived. The next time I'm not skipping on dessert. I want to try the Sticky Toffee Pudding. This was a nice surprise for a first visit. I would return. read more

My wife and I were at Cobalt on Tuesday (5/22). Upon entering Alex apparently Cobalt's everyman (Host, Server, Runner, etc.) met us, let us know we had arrived four minutes before the kitchen closing but not to hurry as he would let the kitchen know two orders would be coming back in a very short bit, offered us seats at the front, dining room or bar and seated us at the bar per my wife Linda's request. Tonight my wife and I decide to go to Cobalt grille for Valentine's dinner. This is definitely not our 1st time to visit Cobalt grille, nor will it be our last. The overall experience was fantastic just to get my recommended out early I would absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone who lives in Virginia Beach or comes to visit. So we started with the Artisianal Cheese Board and the high light of board was the Truffle Honey. It was a flavor we never expected however the honey was garlicky was not over the top and blended well with almost all the cheeses with the exception of the gorgonzola. For my entree I had the Maple Leaf Duck Breast with mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach with a drizzle of Bing cherry and pear compote. The crispy duck skin added that little bit of texture to the meal. The duck breast was cooked to a perfect medium rare paired with the compote was an extraordinary combination. All this paired with the Underwood Pino Noir made for a nearly perfect meal. The only downside of the entree was there seemed to be a lack of salt with the mashed potatoes. I chose not to partake in dessert However my wife had the triple layer chocolate cake the presentation was fantastic she said the flavour was just right not too sweet.
