OMG This restaurant is a must! Outerbanks NC Fantastic food for sure! Great Chef! We ordered Lamb meatballs with cucumbers and marinara. Cheese with a sweet fruity sauce to start. Chicken that was seasoned so good with potatoes and Asparagus. We also had Mahi fish that was cooked perfect. I know all the food served will be about your expectations. Dessert was a Key Lime item with coconut crumbles that I'm still thinking about! Full bar so Don't forget to ask for a Cherry Margarita. Service is over and above. Upscale, but casual small restaurant with exceptional food while still being family-friendly. We love the Outer Banks, but always somewhat dread the food scene since it tends to be overpriced and mediocre while also not being the most kid-friendly in the world. Urban Kitchen turned all of that on it's head. We got into our beach house about 2p, did a quick trip to the beach and then realized that we had to either get groceries and cook at home before bedtime or find someplace to eat out. We'd had our eyes on Urban Kitchen for a bit, but finally decided that we could really use the break from cooking and we'd try it out. We showed up 12 minutes before they opened (on Saturday night) and I'm glad we did. The hostess was tracking everyone that was out there and we were already the 6th party. When they did start seating people, we were either the last or 2nd-to-last group to be seated. They turned away several groups after us--so, lesson learned show up early. The crowd was there for a good reason. We had the porch chop, strip steak, flounder and my 5-year-old daughter had the chicken tenders. It was all fantastic. The best thing was probably my 8-year-old son's steak, which he got with the horseradish sauce on the side. He demolished 2/3 of a huge steak that was perfectly cooked medium to be pink on the inside and easy to eat, but still juicy. The horseradish sauce was also great, but we used it mostly as a dip for his fries. The arugula salad on the side (which I ate almost all of) was also great. My daughters chicken tenders and french fries, which they offered off the menu without being asked when they saw we had kids, were fantastic too. They were real, nice chicken breast filets with fantastic breading cooked to crispy goodness. The fries were lightly salted and herbed shoestring fries, but not over-cooked. The flounder came over wild rice topped with thinly sliced pears and carrots over a cauliflower purée. The fish was cooked beautifully with a nice crispy outer layer and the veggies on top and salty cauliflower brought things together. My wife said pork chop was probably the least exciting thing we got, but it was still quite good. To push things over the top, they saw that we were having a bit of trouble keeping the kids entertained while we waited for our food and brought us a bowl of crayons to draw on the butcher paper that they had on top of each table. The result was a great dining experience that everyone enjoyed. I didn't get a chance to check out the wine list, but the beer list was decent and had a lot of local beers and some nice national ones. Bells two-hearted ale (in cans) and Stone IPA (on tap) were two examples. I got a blackberry original sin cider that didn't disappoint. read more

We arrived around opening time. We are 2 families, a total of 9 people. We knew they didn't except big groups, so we went knowing that each family was going to sit separate. We waited at the door and once the host came out, we told her we wanted to sit separate from each other so we could dine. Her face quickly changed, and she said she doesn't split groups. She was adamant that since we came together she wasn't going to seat us. I thought this was ridiculous. You mean to tell me that if one family came 5 minutes after the other one you wouldn't sit them just because they know people that are dining inside? Her demeanor was rude even though we were calm. This was, by far, my favorite place I ate during my stay in the outer banks . The crunchy catfish was so good that I can't stop thinking about it . The lamb meatballs were also delishes. Once our dessert came I don't even think I knew there was anyone or anything around me. I don't even know what my son ordered but I want to eat it every day of my life. Hire someone with knowledge of how to treat customers because the guy standing in front of your restaurant turned us away @7:30 and said they were done for the night. We called ahead and their message says check the website which we did.... Stated they were open today and their hours sat open until 9:00. Wasted 40 minute drive from the 4x4 area to have dinner for my husbands birthday. Explained that to the guy at the door and he essentially called me a liar when I told him that we were disappointed. If they didn't want to serve dinner in their restaurant he could have offered us to take out. Just a complete jerk. Totally unfortunate. read more

Amazing food. The pork chop was more like a pork steak. Very tasty and perfectly seasoned and prepared. Wife got the chicken which was quite tasty (when I could get her to share some). Service was friendly. It was the off season but still busy, with no wait to be seated on a weekend (they don't do reservations apparently). Food took a bit, mostly because apparently the pork chop took 25m to cook! Prices seemed a bit steep at first, but in the end it was well worth it for an amazing meal (and prices in the Outer Banks are generally higher everywhere). URBAN NIGHTMARE! ZERO STARS IF I COULD. We did understand the "no more than 6 policy", which is why I started the conversation indicating we knew we'd be at two different tables with two different checks. When she indicated she would not break up our party, we took it upon ourselves to break into two different parties of 4, which was still deemed unacceptable. When my wife questioned and indicated this seemed to be discriminatory, the manager/owner got extremely rude and disrespectful and it went downhill from there. We DID NOT threaten to post bad reviews, but are obviously doing so given the complete disrespect of this manager/owner. Our bad review IS NOT because of the 6 person table limitation, or even a review of the food. Our bad review is because of the completely unprofessional and disrespectful manner in which this manager/owner spoke to our party (up to, and including, continuing to yell at my wife as she was walking back to our truck). The biggest disappointment is that the only reason we were there was to share the good experiences of the past with folks that were visiting with us for the first time. We've frequented this place annually for years, and have obviously had good experiences. This year, we unfortunately got to see how much customer service matters to these people, and we will NEVER return. I can never in good conscience recommend this establishment again. In the manager's/owner's own words "there are many other restaurants on the island that will be accommodating to (our) party", and we will remember that great advice for years to come. Tonight was our third visit to Urban Kitchen (2x on this vacation!) and it continues to live up to the hype - we live in the NY area and are lucky enough to have a number of really great restaurants by us but Urban Kitchen really stands out as one of the best. On our first visit this week our group enjoyed the peach and yogurt appetizer, the Buffalo mozzarella and tomato app and the crab toast app - they were all incredible...the crab stands out to me as one of the best dishes. Really just delicious - highly recommend this appetizer (and the others). For our entrees on the first visit, two of us had the steak and loved it - and I have to say, the fries were probably the best I've ever had...another had the pork dish, another had the salmon and another had the chicken ... everyone loved them. We had a few deserts on our first visit and enjoyed those as well (honestly don't know how we had room for anything but they were wonderful so we forged on)! Tonight we went with a smaller group and had to have the crab toast again (it's epic) but my husband wanted to try something new so we also shared the gem salad with green goddess dressing - one of the best salads we've ever enjoyed. For entrees, I had to have the steak again - amazing! Still the best fries and I love the horseradish sauce - great flavor but not overpowering like it often is IMO. My husband had the pork and LOVED every bite - really an outstanding dish...the peaches (in season now) with it were incredible. And our son enjoyed the veggie dish - each veggie was prepared differently and each was perfect... Overall just a great dinner and we will for sure continue to come back every time we are in the area - this is a world class restaurant read more

We fell upon this gem of a restaurant trying to find something open on a Saturday night in September. Yelp reviews were good. We were not disappointed. Our server Chris was very knowledgeable and helpful providing order suggestions and he was spot on. Fantastic! The crab avocado toast was incredible. The pork chop and halibut plates were better then described. The restaurant is very small and has a rustic minimalistic feel. Not fancy at all but quaint and efficient. The owners are the chefs and you can tell the staff are there because they want to be. Very enjoyable experience. Highly recommended. This was not an inexpensive meal but feel it was comparable to the area. read more

Snuck in for dinner after a reservation at another restaurant fell through... so glad things didn't work out because we had an excellent meal. Group of four, two adults, two teenage boys, so we were a little concerned the menu may not suit their tastes, boy were we wrong! Menu is well rounded and offered many interesting options (making a dinner decision was perhaps the most difficult decision I made while on vacation!!) The boys (myself included) ordered strip steaks with fries and greens. The steaks were cooked precisely to our request - two thumbs up all around on the steaks. We lucked out when our first choice for dinner had stopped taking names at 7:15 PM on a Wednesday so we headed to another place on our list and Urban Kitchen did not disappoint! We were seated right away (and were told this was definitely not the norm...usually a 1-2 hour wait!) and proceeded to embark upon the finest dining experience we have ever had in the Outer Banks. So you order a veggie quesadilla ( which is to have some cheese & it comes with NONE. A QUESADILLA?! They never get the sides right. Last time I went in to order the girl at counter was way in to her phone. I was an afterthought, I walked in, said hello, how's your night going? NO RESPONSE! She didn't notice the massive amount of soda or whatever on the floor in front of the counter which I did slip on. She threw the order in a bag long after it was sitting there ready. I've been coming to the Outer Banks since I was a baby so I've had my fair share of interesting experiences down here. This place was by far the worst food that I have ever eaten. When we first walked in, the looks were amazing. Beautifully decorated and the aesthetic was fantastic. After sitting down and ordering drinks we began to look at the menu. The menu was difficult to read. I know they were trying to fit the 'vibe' of the venue but the menu was already making the experience unpleasant. We eventually ordered the sweet potato soup and the shrimp & grits. The food looked incredible but after taking the first bite I knew I would never finish it. The shrimp was absolutely disgusting and tasted like old fish, I could barely get over the texture of the grits, and the sweet potato soap tasted like liquified cinnamon. Hour and a half wait, but the food made it worth it. Was a little worried going in that the portion size would be on the smaller size, but that definitely was not the case here. First I never post Yelp reviews. Only did so because UK is exceptional. Undoubtedly one of the best restaurants in OBX and I'd put them against most restaurants in the DC and Baltimore. Dishes and drinks (thanks Chris!) were masterfully executed. Our margaritas were fresh (none of those horrible syrupy yucky mixes) and the appetizers and entrees, and the amazing staff and chef were excellent. So good we went 2x in 3 days. Only skipped a day because hard to find a table for 6 in OBX. Superb and hope to see Urban Kitchen when we return. BRAVO! Also arrive early. Doors open at 5 and I've heard a line starts at 4:30.
