We heard about the brewery's opening after our last visit to Corolla and put it on our list to checkout this time around. It was great and better than expected. Similar to other breweries, Whalehead Brewery has a tap wall of self-serve beer where you pay by the ounce. Whalehead had a variety of their own beers to try, along with some mixed cocktails ready to pour. They had a few different glass sizes to use in case you wanted to try a little or a lot! We ordered the soft pretzel and they were willing to accommodate us with two beer cheese cups instead of 1 cheese and 1 mustard which was nice because we're not mustard people. The pretzel was a great quality and a major step up from frozen soft pretzels that other restaurants serve. It came out warm, soft, and fresh. We also ordered a 12" chicken cordon blue specialty pizza. We were so excited when we saw the little bit of char marks and doughy rise of the crust. This certainly set them apart from other pizza places in Corolla. The pizza was SO good!!! It was packed with flavor and the ingredients all tasted fresh. It was hands down the best brewery and pub food we experienced in Corolla so far. The he staff was very friendly and helpful. They ensured that all new customers understood how the beer tap wall worked and gave great recommendations from the menu. The only odd thing was that we were asked to start a tab as soon as we walked in the door and before we were seated. I can see the necessity in this when they're busy, but the day we visited was quiet and normal table service would have sufficed. We wish they would've had 2XL shirts in stock because we wanted to buy a couple. They also have outdoor picnic tables which is a great alternative when the weather is nice. We went to Whalehead for dinner while staying in Corolla. There were 6 adults and a child. The seating was limited, but they found us a table and then when a larger table opened up, we moved there. I liked the pour your own drink system, so you can try different beers or cocktails before buying a large glass. We were quickly able to place our food order and it started to come out surprisingly fast. The caesar salad was tasty and big enough to share between 2 or 3 people. Our table got 4 different kinds of pizza and everyone said their pizza was good. I had the margherita, and the crust was soft and delicious, the sauce was just the right amount with bubbly fresh mozzarella and fresh basil on top. The restaurant was loud, but it's a small space that they do a lot with. There is also outdoor seating available, but it was raining, so we weren't able to sit there. read more

Stopped into this local microbrewery while staying in Corolla, Outer Banks. There is inside seating for large and small groups and colorful picnic tables outside. It features a 'pour yourself' wall for beers and some wine and cocktails. How it works is you open a tab going in which allows you to pay by the ounce, so you can try whatever is available. They have a variety of glass shapes and sizes depending on what you are pouring. I suggested they add paddles for a make your own flight which would be handy. They serve food and while we did not try any the pizzas looked great. Definitely will return for the full treatment next time we are there. read more

Super disappointing. The pizzas are really expensive and SMALL! The crust is not the best. We fed a family of 14 (5 pizzas) and the pizzas were so tiny we had to resort to another pizza place (Corolla Pizza-WAY BETTER) The pizzas were kind of dry and not much sauce. We drove past this place on vacation in the OBX so many times. So glad we finally decided to pop in. The brick oven pizzas were absolutely incredible! So were the apps! The general manager was so knowledgeable about everything and everyone was so friendly! For non-beer fans, there are house-made cocktails and wine on tap too. While none of the beers blew me away, I did enjoy the Oktoberfest and Hefeweizen. We had the Pepperoni and Prosciutto pizza, fresh out of the oven and piping hot. There's a large table that was perfect for our group of 16; we called ahead and they reserved it for us. We decided to try Whalehead for pizza and drinks. The restaurant was conveniently located (lots of parking), and when we walked in, we were greeted right away by the friendly staff. After checking out the menu, we ordered the Spicy Sizzler, which features red sauce, pepperoni, Italian sausage, pepperoncini, and hot honey sauce. Our food was ready quickly, and we were impressed by the fact that they had their own pizza oven. I'll start with the positives: friendly staff and good food. We had a few different kinds of pizza, some pretzels and maybe a salad. All were tasty. The negative: I say negative because there is really only one, but its a biggie... the way the beers are priced. The only insight to drink pricing is the screen showing how much it costs by the ounce, when done it doesn't display how much the pour cost you, only how many ounces you poured. The drinks are expensive. More pricey than a similar size beer would be at even the best, most awarded breweries that I've been to and I've been to a ton all over the country. We had sticker shock when paying the bill as we only had a few beers, yet the price for those beers was very, very expensive for the quality of beer served. Depending on which beers you consume here, it may actually be cheaper to buy a beer in a sports stadium than here, although granted, the stadium beers wont be as good. read more

They have some truly neat beers on tap - heavy on the sours - a few local cocktails, and some wine. Lots of different glass types to use which was fun. Nice big tables, some outside area as well. Stopped by after the Wild Horse Adventure tour after checking on Yelp. We found this awesome brewery. They have a beer wall where you dispense what you want, and how much you want. This is a great concept for me because I like to try a lot of different options, but I cannot drink a lot of full size beers. You give your card at the entrance and get a wristband to pour and purchase your beers. The staff were very friendly and informative as this was our first time in a brewery with this set up. We had the Bavarian pretzel and both the mustard and beer cheese were great. We then had the Meat Supreme pizza and it was delicious as well. We really like the wood fired pizza. The ambiance is super chill and on this particular Sun afternoon they had a guy and a guitar singing, which I'm a sucker for. The pizza looked so good in the Yelp photos. I love wood oven pizza. But it just wasn't worth the price! Not very flavorful, crust wasn't very good - disappointing. I would have rated higher except the salad I got with my pizza was old. The cucumbers were slimy and the croutons were so hard I couldn't eat them. It was obvious it had been sitting around awhile. What an incredible spot!!! We came across Whalehead from family recommendations and have now made this the "must visit" place for any OBX excursion. The #1 thing you get upon walking in is that this is the place that will immediately make you feel like a local even if it's your first time visiting. We were there on a night with live music by Anton Tumelev...who was incredible on the guitar and had the whole place rocking all night. The beer selection is just right. Not too many to have to figure out but more than enough to explore. The Whalehead house brews are a treat. It's a bartenderless operation that gives you a scanning bracelet so you serve yourself at the automatic beer taps. I focused on the IPAs with the Whalehead Hazy New England IPA stealing my attention as a really tasty little number. With all of that, the other star of the show was the pizza. I think the secret is the dough which has that little hint of sweetness combined with crusty-on-the outside-chewy on the inside texture that makes you want to come back the next day for more. (Seriously...I woke up in the middle of the night craving another pizza from Whaleheadhead!) Kristin ...the owner is on the scene making sure everything is just right to make it a must visit location.
