I was exploring the downtown of Manteo and stopped in for a quick lunch. The food was tasty and service was awesome, definitly a place to check out. Food: I got the fish sandwich. Not your traditional hoagie style roll, the Lost Colony version is served on grilled bread (even has the grill char lines). The fish is white fish, battered and fried, served with the usual accoutrements. The real show on this sandwich is the house made tartar sauce! It was so good I even used it to dip my fries in. Atmosphere: I sat at the bar due to it being busy and a decent wait for a table. Madison was working the bar and killing it! the decor is a nod to Roanoke Islands roots with a British pub vibe. I stole some of his mash and it was delicious. - Oyster and chips: your classic fried oysters and fries...good but not anything to write home about - Roanoke island iced tea: highly recommend this! They use their local Kill Devil rum. The blend of the pecan rum and passion fruit juice made the cocktail have an almost banana taste which I enjoyed. Lost Colony Tavern is a nice spot in Manteo and we were glad we stopped in. They have a decent kids menu and our kids were happy with their meals, which isn't always the case when traveling. I enjoyed the British pub atmosphere, and it felt like a fun fit given Manteo's history as one of the original British colony locations. The draft list was solid, with choices like Smithwick's and Magners cider that you don't always see around here. While I usually lean toward an Irish pub, this place makes sense in context and has its own charm. It's a comfortable spot with good food and a unique tie-in to local history. read more

My family had another wonderful visit. We've been to quite a few restaurants and it is not often we revisit a place. But the Lost Colony Tavern has become a tradition when we come to Manteo! We started with the Bavarian pretzel. It's soft, buttery, and salty. It comes with beer cheese and two mustards. The beer cheese is a personal favorite. The bangers and mash are something we look forward to having. The sausage is so good and has the right amount of Guinness flavor. The onions are perfectly caramelized, very savory. Then it is completed with the soft, creamy mashed potatoes. We also had the fish and chips. It was hot, fresh, and enjoyed thoroughly. I recently stopped in here while in Manteo for the day. I actually stopped twice. The first time was to grab a beer to walk around the social district with, and then once later for food. I ordered the flounder pounder for walking around with. It was a very drinkable light beer. When we returned later to grab some food the prices were a little expensive for the dishes they were offering. I ended up just ordering a basket of fries. The waitress came over and greeted us quickly and friendly. It was getting a little busy while I was in there and it seemed pretty casual with a variety of patrons. The fries now were great. My friends who have lived here for decades have never been to this place before surprisingly! We had an outstanding waitress. She even had a look of a colonial person. Food is fresh here and I didn't realize the fish was fresh but I was surprised and glad I could tell. The fries were so crispy and usually I don't go crazy for fries. I agree with others that the dining room is small and makes it tough with bigger crowds, and my local friends agree. It is too bad they can't convert their gift shop space to extra table space. The coffee cocktail didn't capture my attention but it isn't a bad choice by any means at all. They use the local Charis coffee, a cafe in walking distance from here that I worked remotely at earlier. Not sure what they can do here. Start renting out other establishments' space if they have outdoor tables and those establishments are closed? In some cases this could require crossing the street- not ideal but some thoughts. The pavilion in the center of town with the public bathrooms could make for some good extra room. Monitoring the place so alcohol doesn't leave the space could be tiresome to say the least though. A number of establishments may stay open outside regular hours because of special events and Lost Colony is no exception. They stay open until 8 PM typically but on this particular first Friday, there were local first Friday events apparently. read more

Tried Lost Colony for the first time, but not the last. Hubby and I just had appetizers- the pretzel and the loaded chips-- I could happily drown in that beer cheese! I love coming to Lost Colony when I get out this way. Lost Colony's American Burger is a classic and will not disappoint. I can also appreciate their huge pretzel. It's a sure-fire hit with their house-made Guinness cheese. I almost pulled the trigger on their bangers and mash but I held back for next time. Pre-Lost Colony performance, this place is a logical choice for dinner. They even have a vegan option on the menu (Impossible burger... are you kind of sick of these by now, too?). The area was pretty busy with tourists on a Thursday evening early in August, so definitely make reservations if you can. They were able to add us to the waitlist and we were seated within 20 minutes. I like a tavern's atmosphere and Lost Colony did not disappoint with its early Americana/British ambiance. It's an open dining room surrounded by windows with a bar off to the side where you may sit as well. My family liked their food, fish and chips, and I was OK with my burger. I had to get it without the bun to make it vegan. The fries are large steak fries. All was OK, but nothing I'd be dying to go back and try again, honestly. My wife and I made a nice lunch by sharing the Fish and Chips, a very generous portion of fish with a nice beer batter. Along with some crisp fries and some cole slaw it hit the spot! We had a very friendly server who was attentive and gave us some tips for touring Manteo and the surroundings. We came here to augment our lost colony experience, and I'm so glad we did. We visited the visitor center and were waiting for the Lost Colony show when we had to get some dinner. I had to order the Scotch egg and got the oysters and chips as my entree. I have to say that for a restaurant that I was there for tourist, it didn't disappoint. The Scotch eggs were moist and the pepper jelly was the perfect complement. My son and I finished that fast! The oysters were very crunch on the outside and yummy goodness on the inside. Cocktail sauce went well with them and plentiful. They gave me so much chips that I couldn't finish. Portions here were huge! I also had to try out the local beer so I opted for Kitty Hawk Blonde. It was so good after a hot day of touring. I personally love the British references throughout the restaurant. I ate outside which was perfect as the evening was starting. One of the best burgers I've ever had! Hands down. The Irish Whiskey burger made with American Wagyu covered with cheesy, bacony goodness.... Muah. Chef's kiss. Dustin is a seasoned pro behind the bar. Worked his ass off the entire time but made you feel at home while making sure that all of his patrons were taken care of. Came on a rainy day at the end of our vacation. The place was full at 11:30 am. We were added to a 30-minute wait list and had time to shop the local businesses. We were promptly seated in 30-minutes. Upon arrival, a party of four in front had a 1-hr and 30-minute wait. My wife and I enjoyed one of the many local beers made my Lost Colony brewing. My wife ordered a locally caught, Wanchese fish toastie sandwich, and I opted for the wagyu whiskey burger. Mind you we (party of 6) came on a windy, grey, blustery, rain-spitting OFF-SEASON March day - on a Tuesday for a late 3PM-ish lunch. Came to check out the quaint little town of Manteo but it was really just too cold and miserable to tour the town. We eyed Lost Colony right smack dab in the center of town (the downtown tourist area consists of literally like 4-5 blocks running down the literal center of town from the water - not much to the town but VERY quaint and would have been fantastic had the weather cooperated that day!). We needed shelter from the weather and a few in our party immediately gravitated towards "Irish Pub" when we eyed this place from afar so in we went. For a Tuesday at 3PM, the place was pretty packed. Interesting mix of patrons - locals sitting up at the bar drinking and watching the many tv's overhead with tourist families taking a load off, having a meal and sheltering from the weather like us. It's a pretty TINY place inside. There is a large-ish outside dining patio/terrace area that would be great I imagine during the busy season to just grab a table and enjoy a meal and people/tourist-watch because you're right there where all the action is. But the inside of the restaurant is just a single open dining room/area and, relatively speaking, not a great deal of seating. I can't imagine what the wait would be during the heavy busy season - especially for larger (over 4 people) parties. Because of this, not recommended for restless little kids/infants (don't even think about coming in with your stroller!) nor for the mobility challenged (though they do try to accommodate - with a kid's menu and also a walk-up ramp). We grabbed the last available table - a 4 top and squeezed 2 other chairs around it (which was fine for us, no issues) but it was a tight squeeze in an already small space. The place is pretty clean and neat. Not your most up-to-date decor or furnishings but not divey at all. Pretty much what you would expect from what looks to be a long-time fixture of downtown Manteo catering to tourists. First - SERVICE. Very good. I was impressed actually. Our server was friendly and responsive, the food came out altogether without significant delay for made-to-order items (for a party of 6 no less) and we were not rushed to hurry up eat and run which was really nice. (Not sure how different it would be during busy season with a long waitlist for tables...) Service I can say was impressively good. Next - FOOD. The menu is actually pseudo extensive. Definitely something for everyone but definitely (this will be a "duhhhh" statement) skewed towards Irish / British pub favorites. Check out alllllllll my menu pics. Irish Pub-themed menu with a uniquely OBX twist. Irish style grilled pork sausage, Shepherd's & Cottage Pies, Scotch Eggs, British back bacon, fresh local catch, mushy peas sides, beer/Guinness-braised meats, Irish Whiskey infused items, Carolina smoked bbq, Irish soda bread, Kerrygold butter, Scottish wild game burger, Welsh lamb, Baileys Irish Cheesecake (!), Sticky Toffee Pudding and much more. Creative, I'll say that. This is not your hungry-jack-just-meat-and-potatoes place. Just sayin'. As I said, something for everyone (they even have an impossible burger on the menu!). And you know what? I'm here for it. "We" (whole party of 6) were all here for it. Most everything we ordered had an Irish Pub bent to it. Fish & Chips (menu says made with Wanchese Bay-caught catch of the day), Bangers & Mash (sausage and mashed potatoes) and even a hearty Guinness-braised beef stew/soup. Nothing frozen here. All fresh and all made to order including genuinely chargrilled items (sausage, burger) with all food coming out piping hot from the back. And then there are the draft brews. Extensive brew menu (see my pic) - bottles, drafts, local craft brews, classic Irish and British faves. Impressively extensive. A Guinness for one of us and a Smithy's (Smithwick's) for another hit the spot. Finally - PRICE. Actually not bad for creatively concocted, fresh ingredients, tasty, made to order, hot out the back dishes. Portion sizes while not ginormous were decent for the prices charged. I guess it could be worse lol. You can't really say much about tourist pricing amiright - it is what it is and you take it or leave it - what do they call that Being a captive audience - ? You get the picture. But given allll of that, I still would give this place 4 stars and would recommend - ESPECIALLY IN THE OFF SEASON. If you're down the OBX outside of the summer months (but especially in late Fall, Winter, early Spring), head down to Manteo, park by the waterfront, stroll, check out the quaint downtown area (be sure to head over to Charis coffee house for a White Owl (hot) latte - SO GOOD (read my review)) and plan to stop in to Lost Colony to take a load off, come in from the cold, enjoy a cold Irish draft pour and some good fresh food! read more
