We stopped at The Broken Plate while in Corolla during the off-season. There were only about three people working, so service was a little slow, but completely understandable, and everyone was friendly and attentive. The restaurant itself is a nice, open space, although the decor is a little odd with a lot of fake flowers everywhere. We started with the calamari and crab dip. The crab dip was easily the best thing we had. Creamy, flavorful and served with fried pita chips that were hot, crispy and really good. The calamari was just okay. It tasted a little like it may have been frozen rather than freshly prepared. I had the cheeseburger, which was fine but nothing particularly memorable. The fries were actually pretty good and nicely crisp. The biggest miss for me was the spicy margarita. The spice came from pickled jalapeños, which gave the whole drink a strange pickled flavor instead of that fresh jalapeño heat I was expecting. I ended up not drinking it. Avoid this place like the plague. I mean it. Came Tuesday. Fine. Came back Saturday with five friends on our last night in the Outer Banks and it turned into one of the most insulting meals I've ever paid for. The broken plate sent Three different waiters at different points. Nobody owned the table. Nobody knew what was happening. We ordered the jerk chicken. They called it a "whole chicken." It was a half chicken. Sixty dollars for half a chicken that arrived cold. The rice was raw--hard, crunchy, undercooked garbage. The beans? One bean. One. The rest of the plates were cold too. Everything. They said they'd take 20% off. They took five dollars. Then they made it worse: that "discount" came out of the waitress's tip. The restaurant didn't eat the cost. They penalized the only decent person there and kept the money themselves. The waitress took an $80 hit on a $400 bill. The manager stood there and lied about it. Straight-faced. A lying sack of crap who would rather steal from her own staff than admit they served cold, incomplete, overpriced food and then shorted the bill. I walked out. I should have done it sooner. Came here for dinner last Sunday. We had reservations for 3 at 7:15pm and we were seated relatively fast with a reservation. The restaurant is smaller and the tables are pretty close together. The atmosphere of the restaurant is nice but I just remember it being a bit loud from all the different conversations going on. This time around we skipped appetizers and went straight for our meal. I ordered the BPK chopped salad and the butternut squash bisque. I honestly enjoyed both of these. The butternut squash bisque had lobster chunks in it and the bisque was super creamy and delicious. I also enjoyed the chopped salad which was refreshing and their raspberry vinaigrette was tasty. My cousin got the jerk chicken and he said the jerk chicken was okay but he is use to jerk chicken having a hint of more spice. I brought the family here on vacation and had a good experience. The staff was very helpful but the wait time for meals was about 30 minutes, a little longer than I had anticipated. I purchased the coconut shrimp and scallops - an entree that was 35 dollars and for that I received: 2 coconut shrimp, 2 scallops, about a tablespoon of seasonal vegetables, and what appeared to be 4 cups of rice. The appetizers were no better when we ordered the arugula and prosciutto - which ended up being 5 handfuls of arugula and genuinely the smallest serving of prosciutto I have ever seen in my life. The other server seemed to have a need to ignore the women at the table. We told her 3 separate times that one person would be ordering all the appetizers. While there was plenty of parking and the hostess staff members were delightful, we were only quickly greeted by our waiter, and saw him minimal the rest of the time we were there ( intro with drink order, food order, and check at end - our food was delivered by someone else). We have 11-month old twins, and although we understand that maybe it was felt they were doing us or others a favor by placing the four of us in the bar area (by ourselves) and not in the main dining area with everyone else, it felt as if we were disregarded and not appreciated. Our twins are really well behaved, so to assume they wouldn't be was pretty shameful (if that was the case). I have mixed feelings about our visit, and would potentially come back to give it another chance. We went out with the whole family (9 total, kids and adults), and we saw that they did take reservations but opted to see what the walk-in availability was, as all of the reservation time slots were open online. Immediately from when we walked in, the 2 people at the front counter were stand-offish and didn't seem too happy that we didn't have a reservation. Eventually we got seated, and got basic drinks from one of the ladies who sat us. Our waiter came over shortly after, who made us feel welcome, explained the specials, and clarified about the check being split into groups or one check. No issues with the waiter, he kept up with checking in and refills, and was friendly and helpful with questions. The food was pretty bland, even the jerk chicken, which honestly was a little over powering with just straight spice and no other flavors. The kids meals with chicken tenders, burgers and fries were all really good, and even some of the adults shared the kids meals too! My cut of fish was massive, well seasoned and the slaw really added a nice topping. Prices were not outrageous. Four meals, an app, and a glass of wine came out to $100.
