Carib Shack really impressed me. I ordered a couple of the daal puree/roti to go, and my order was ready right within the promised time frame. When I got home, I heated it up in the microwave for under a minute and it was perfectly soft and fresh. The daal (split peas) filling was plentiful, flavorful, and so satisfying. The woman who greeted me was kind and even offered to open my pineapple Jarritos, which was a nice touch because I didn't have an opener. If you enjoy spice, the heat level was spot on -- flavorful without being overwhelming. Personally, I wasn't a big fan of the cabbage and carrots (they didn't have much flavor to me), but everything else was delicious. Oh my goodness!!!! So glad we found this place. Food was absolutely amazing and very generous portions. I had the cuban sandwich and plantains. The cuban sandwich was huge and so delicious and the plantains were carmalized, tender and delicious. We sat outside ( no indoor seating) and the others at my table had a "stacker burger" with mac and cheese and the other person had a burger and fried okra. Both said the food was delicious and we all agreed we will definitely be back. Vinnie and Stephanie are the owners and we're so friendly and helpful. Yum!! I've never tried Caribbean food before and my husband provided a list of food options in VA Beach and this was one of his top 10 to try. Pro: the Caribbean Jerk Shrimp and Cauliflower were good. My husband thought Spicy Pork Bowl was really good. The kids had burgers and liked it a lot. Found this place on yelp and it did NOT disappoint. The food is a takeout location that specializes in Caribbean/Jamaican food. I got a takeout order of a jerk chicken sandwich coco calypso (11.49$), a jerk chicken bowl ($12.98), and a side of plantains (4$). The jerk chicken sandwich coco calypso was amazing. The coco bread, jerk chicken, and cheese were all on point. It was so good that I had to come again the next day and get another one. The jerk chicken bowl with rice & peas was very good but the portions you get are way less than expect for the price you pay, should be cheaper if anything. The plantains were good and they give you around 10+ plantains per 4$ side order which is pretty good. All in all, this place was great and the food is amazing. I was on a quick 30-minute lunch break and asked her what she recommended. Without hesitation, she suggested the jerk shrimp bowl, and wow--I was definitely impressed. The food was piping hot and absolutely delicious. The rice and peas alone? I could eat that by itself! She told me they cook it with coconut milk, and you can really taste that extra richness. The cabbage was flavorful, and the jerk shrimp? Phenomenal. And let's talk about that avocado sauce--I discovered it toward the end of my meal, and I wish I had found it sooner! This is mostly a takeout spot, but they do have a couple of tables outside if you want to sit and eat. I also got to snap a picture in front of Guy's photo, which was a fun touch! (1) Granny's Curry Chicken Bowl, with Coconut Milk Rice & Beans ($12.95); (2) Shack Jerk Chicken Bowl with same sides) ($12.95), and Sweet Plantain ($3.49). All of the food was tasty with a good blend of spices. The Jerk Chicken had more chili spiciness than the curry; the curry had more chicken in the bowl. I was in the area so i hadn't had Carib Shack in a few years. So i went online to place my order. The online ordering is pretty easy to navigate. Pickup was within 20 minutes. When i arrived the owner brought me my order. She was smiling and very nice. I did like her vibe. Its a small restaurant and i don't think they offer dine in right now, only take out. There's a screen up front so you can place your order on your own. There was no one else there so i chatted with the owner then left. I ordered the coco burger, loaded jerk pork fries, jerk shrimp, and rum cake. The coco burger has soft bread which i enjoyed, the burger was ok but definitely needed more seasoning. It just seemed to be missing something, but was still ok. The jerk shrimp was mildly spicy with a yummy garlic aioli sauce. My fav was the loaded jerk pork fries. All the flavors came together and it was filling. I'd get those again. Now in the past i really liked the rum cake, but not so much this visit. It was different. Its ok if you microwave it a couple secs, but i wasn't a fan of the cake room temperature. The plantains were good and a little sweet, they complimented the fries... Delightful! I came here because of course I saw this place in triple D. Plus I love a good Carib spot. Pretty close to the beach in a strip mall, it looks to be one of the few places that remains open. They are not allowing seating right now, nor do they have public restrooms due to the 'vid. We tried: Brown stew beef Jerk chicken Soca bowl Coco bread Roti Plantain So full disclosure, I have never been a fan of jerk chicken, I mean it's cool but it will never be my first pick when I go to a Carib spot. The jerk here, was alright; although, I would have preferred it to have more spice. To taste it together with the cabbage was good. I honestly enjoyed the soca bowl more, as I have never thought to put together that combination, with the cheese. The brown stew beef, was thee best I have had in a while. The beef was super tender and had an amazing taste. The rice and peas were a nice addition. I also got a roti skin with some pepper sauce and that did not disappoint either. If they add some buss up shut to the menu, I'll never leave! We had to taste the food before we left in it way back home and one of the owners came out and offered us some water and had a quick chat. Mmmm Yum! On a recent business trip in Virginia Beach, I ventured to Carib Shack based on all the positive reviews! This place, hanging ever-so-quietly off the end of an unassuming strip mall, packs a punch! When I arrived, I was quickly greeted by the kind lady behind the counter. I asked her for her favorite bowl and she made it pretty hard for me by saying her favorite is the pork bowl, but the chicken is the most popular. OMGosh, which do I pick?! After an unnecessarily long debate andn her entertaining my indecisiveness, I decided on the pork bowl. I waited about ten minutes for my food and when I grabbed it, piping hot, I sped the 20 minutes back to my hotel to devour it. Forty minutes driving to get food from this place, you say? Is it worth it, you ask? Yesss!! First of all, the flavor is explosive. Love, love, love the spices. With every bite, I felt like I was back in Jamaica again. I can also probably see why she favors the pork dish - it has such a variety of pork cuts. There's the hard little pieces for texture, the pork skin cooked to melt-in-your-mouth perfection, pork tender pieces...all of it was just grand. If I had just one tiny criticism, it would be that there was too much sauce on my bowl. I know, I know how crazy that sounds but I felt like my sauce overwhelmed everything else in the bowl and I couldn't enjoy my coconut rice and peas and cabbage. Honestly, after eating the pork pieces, I tossed the rice and cabbage. I'm one of those weirdos who likes just the perfect amount of sauce, so maybe I'll request less on my second try. Ended up coming here for lunch during my short stay in Virginia Beach. I decided to go with the Jerk pork bowl over a burrito and I am very happy with what I got. I opted for a choice of the dirty rice mixed with vegetables and devoured the whole dish. The sauce had a good kick to it, and pork was done perfectly. The shop itself is quote small, with only about 3 tables available to sit at, so you either need to swing by a little off main hours, or just hope you get lucky if you are wanting to eat in shop. There is the option to order ahead online so I assume a lot of people just grab it to go. Pricing is very reasonable for the quality and quantity of what you get. Since this restaurant was featured on Diners Drive-ins and Dives I saw that a favorite was the jerk pork so I decided to order that in a bowl but without rice. Good decision because they give you ALOT of meat. And it is sooo good and spicy. I had this with cabbage and carrots. I'll admit that I chose the Coco Burger as a starter. It's probably why I had trouble finishing the jerk pork bowl. So about this Coco burger with bacon; the bun was amazing! I should have had them add more of the aioli because it had a great flavor.
