Sweet potato with a brown sugar butter side was the best I had in my life!! And oxtail with a thick bbq-type sauce w/ plantains
    Kelly P.

The oxtail was pricey, but well worth it!! So tender and fall-off-the-bone moist, not to mention the sweet potato was soft as puddin' and tasted superb with the brown sugar butter side. Go for the fried plantains as the side! They were a nice dessert after my oxtail meal. Oh, and service was very quick, and the location was basic but clean. Can't complain!

Island jerk hut has always been my spot, haven't been since they were in that small shack pre-Covid. The prices have definitely gone up but that's everywhere so it's the norm. The taste is just as good and the portions aren't bad. If you go during the lunch hour expect to wait 15-25mins. Service was good.

I went once at their old location and it was too far for me to go back so I was ecstatic to learn that they opened a new location- which is a breath of fresh air compared to the literal hut they once had. The new restaurant is brighter and bigger and yes they have indoor seating! (The old place had a picnic tables outside). I went during lunch and was welcome with a warm friendly greeting. I'm not a fan of jerk chicken but theirs is the only place I would get it from. Not only did I order the jerk chicken to share but I also decided to get another Caribbean favorite of mine which is the brown stew chicken. I ordered the small size and it still comes with 2 sides just as the large does. The small is a really nice portion. The prices here are much more reasonable than some of the other Caribbean spots in the area. And IMO, tastes a whole lot better too! Another note to add: they also offer military discounts!

Jerk pork, mac n cheese, and cabbage

I had Island Jerk Hut for the first time. I had a craving and MP's is always packed, so i found this place on yelp and stopped by. I walked in and it was several people waiting on orders. So they seem to be pretty busy. I just knew the food was gonna be on point!! So i went to order with the young girl at the counter. She wasn't friendly at all. She had a nice nasty kinda approach and kinda rushed me by continuing to say "will that be all"? Thats a pet peeve of mine, when I'm done i will say that'll be all... Lol. Dang.. But maybe she was having a bad day.. Her and the cook were having words because he was hot and wanted to leave, so maybe he was aggitating her. But seriously do that in the back somewhere boo... Anyways it was a few things they were out of. So i ordered the jerk pork with mac n cheese and cabbage and a beef patty... Several people were talking about those beef patties, but there was only one left... I was told about 15 mins. So i left and came back 25 mins later and my little box of food had been forgotten. They said they were still waiting on something. So i asked how long and kinda got brushed off. It was very busy but kindness and professionalism goes a long way. So i continued to wait. The side orders are out in front where you pick up your food and i ain't gonna lie it didn't look appealing at all. If they aren't gonna keep it looking clean it should probably be in the back. But thats just my opinion. The food is a little pricey, and they charge extra if you get mac n cheese. So i finally got my food and left. The pork was a little spicy but didn't have much actual flavor and it was alot of fat. More fat than meat. The mac was ultra dry. There was cheese on top but none hardly in the middle. So i was just eating noodles it felt like. The cabbage was alright. The beef patties was my favorite thing. It was mild with good flavor and flaky crust... The plantains were ok as well but you don't get alot. Maybe it was an off day for them. So I'll give them another chance. But i wouldn't go out my way to eat here again. 3 stars.

Jerk Chicken Dark, Mac and Cheese, Steamed Cabbage

The restaurant itself is nice and warming, could definitely see myself sitting down and eating with the clear window views and natural sunlight. The food, well the best thing I can say about it was the jerk chicken was definitely spicy. I definitely couldn't tell what part of the chicken this was even though it was classified as dark. The mac and cheese was lack luster, nothing amazing but not the worst I've had. The cabbage was just terrible. Big pieces of carrots mixed in and it was tasteless. It really was a let down because it came highly recommended.

Finally got around to visiting their new location, and happy to report it is still amazing. Their old spot in South Norfolk was a dumpy, tiny building that looked like it could actually be in Kingston, and the food oozed that authenticity. The new location is spacious, bright, and clean by they are still serving the most authentic and flavorful Jamaican food in the 757. Their jerk is unmatched, bursting with allspice and scotch bonnet flavors! You cannot do better for Caribbean flavors; highly-recommended!

I've been looking for a good Jamaican restaurant so I thought I'd give it a try. I've apparently passed this one plenty of time and just didn't know it was there. It is off to the side with plenty of parking which was nice. I was greeted upon entering which is too tier for me the associate was pleasant and answered any question a I had as a first time guest. I ordered the jerk chicken dark, rice and peas with cabbage. It was super tasty the cabbage was bland and not as hot in temperature as I would like but everything else was extremely good I'd just order a different side the next time I came. They had bottled beverages and of course I pared my meal with a pineapple soda! They had the vibes with the music going and just an over fresh feel. The associate mentioned they have happy hour and good rum punch so I'll be back! This restaurant has a full bar and drink menu with some things I'd love to come back and try.

It was brand new & the woman tending the store was friendly, energetic & passionate about the food she was serving. I ordered jerk chicken but she insisted on letting me have a taste of everything on the menu. Everything was delicious & I now had a new obsession- the sweet coco bread. For years after that whenever I was around I would pop in. I've since moved to GA and been living here for almost ten years. Any transplant will tell you sometimes only family & food keep you tethered to your home state. So happens this wknd I was in town for my sisters wedding & got my hair done a couple blocks away from Island Krave. As she finished up I placed an order on Uber eats, really excited for this meal- something familiar & missed. To see how the quality & care has declined truly hurts my heart. The portion of meat they served me was actually disrespectful to people who work hard for their money & choose to support a small business. These pictures are after they added some. If you're going to chop it to smitherens you need to measure it out to ensure the portions make sense. Anyone that cooks can tell you this is a thigh at best. & this is a $17 plate. I don't want to talk down on the place too much it's just sad how much of a let down the entire meal was after I felt like they threw my stuff together thinking it was being delivered and they wouldn't have to look me in the face. The Mac was good & the flavor of the chicken was as well. Cabbage mushy & salty. Rice is not yellow. & apparently $5 gets you one slice of coco bread now (I got two bc of my troubles, ha!) Idk I hope they can figure it out but personally I would never spend another dollar in this place.

I tried them before a long time ago and haven't had them recently, so I was really anticipating having them again. The ordering process was quick and easy, we used their computer screens to put our orders in. Not too bad of a wait for our food. The staff were very communicative on our food status while we were waiting, which I appreciated. My order included an Afro pie (7.5/10), I absolutely loved the sauce it came with, but I do feel like the meat inside and pie itself was dry. Sautéed green beans (10/10). Chicken Egusi soup w/ pounded yam (9/10), the flavors were amazing! I loved how savory it was; however, I do believe they switched the spice level of my soup with my sisters because I asked for none-little spice, yet my soup tasted like it was their highest spice level !! I had to keep taking breaks while eating because while it did taste really good, it was also so so spicy! I really did enjoy my meal, despite receiving the wrong spice level in my Egusi soup. I will def return again soon. My overall rate of experience : 8.6/10

It's the kind of place where you walk in thinking, "Oh nice," and walk out Googling how to recreate the lighting in your own living room. Cozy without being cramped. Trendy without making me feel like my shoes were judged. The food? Listen. I would like to publicly apologize to my taste buds for ever doubting them. Every bite tasted like the chef stood over the plate whispering, "You deserve this." Bold flavors, perfectly cooked, plated like it was about to audition for a food magazine. Now why four stars instead of five? Because I have trust issues. And also because the food came out so good I now have unrealistic expectations for every other meal I will ever eat. That feels like a burden I wasn't prepared to carry. Service was friendly, attentive, and didn't once make me feel bad for asking, "What's that?" three separate times. Water refills were prompt. Smiles were genuine. No one hovered. No one disappeared into the void. Would I go back? Absolutely. Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I pretend I discovered it before it was cool? Also yes. Four stars. Only because if I give five, they might get too powerful.
