We came here a couple times while on vacation. This might be the most famous bar/restaurant in the Outer Banks. It's not very large, so it can get crowded. If you have to wait, there's a cool little bar outside in the back where you can order from theimited food/drink menu. There's also 2 sand volleyball courts where some serious (and not serious v-ball is played). Our 6th grade daughter is trying to get on her school volleyball team, so we brought her here to get some training with a local volleyball coach who happened to be here giving lessons. Our dogs, my wife and I just chilled out, drinking beer and mixed drinks while our daughter got some good work in for just $15 per hour. Win-win. read more

We stopped by Tortuga's Lie near Nags Head during our Outer Banks vacation, and it was fantastic! I ordered the fish tacos, and they were some of the best fish tacos I've ever had. The mahi was incredibly fresh, perfectly blackened, and packed with flavor. The fresh slaw and creamy sauce complemented the fish perfectly without overpowering it. The yellow rice and black beans on the side were delicious and made for a complete meal. Everything tasted fresh, and the portions were generous. The atmosphere was fun and laid-back, exactly what you'd expect from a great beach restaurant. Service was friendly, attentive, and our food came out quickly. If you're in Nags Head and looking for a great food and dining experience, Tortuga's Lie is a must-visit. The mahi-mahi fish tacos alone are worth the trip! Good food and good service. The food was reasonably priced and the place was clean. It was a bustling Saturday night but we got in ahead of the rush. I ordered the ahi sandwich and it was very good, even if it was a little over-cooked for my taste. But the best part of the meal was the chocolate pecan pie! It was so good, we got two pieces to go! I'd go again just for the pie. For being the off season, I was surprised by how crowded it was, but that's a testament of how good it was. The locals know what they're talking about when they recommend a place. Tortuga's Lie was recommended to us by one of the tour guides we met when we went to see the wild horses. What a fun place. Seafood is a bit spicier than many other places but the atmosphere is the tops. I think it better for lunch than dinner and here's why. After the ambiance at the entrance with all the license plates stapled to the ceiling and friendly bartenders, you wander back through this little dive to a back bar and a sand volleyball court in which people waiting on a table just jump in and play and some, lol, one handed, due to drink in the other. It's a bit of a local hangout. For example, our waitress was a wandering gypsy that had just moved back from an 8 year stent in New Zealand. This is a really good and fun place. read more

My friend and I decided to take a day trip to Nags Head. I reviewed the menu before going and I'm happy I chose this place for us to enjoy a late lunch. We walked in and were seated right away. Their dining area is small in the front but they also have a patio. Service is a little slow to come greeted us but it looked like they only had 1 waitress, Megan. She was very nice. She went over the specials which had us intrigued. I ordered the southwest salmon salad, my friend had the chili wings and a cheeseburger. The food was delicious!! That salad was soooooo good! This is one of few select restaurants on the OBX that are open year-round. If you frequent the area in the off-season, you'll quickly figure out that a number of places are closed during that time. Not so with Tortuga's Lie. This is one of our fave places for either lunch or dinner. In either case, be ready for a wait depending on what time of day it is. The food is worth it, though. If space is available, you can choose to sit at the bar. They have a couple TVs. We've had everything from one of the daily specials (fried flounder sandwich is one example), to the cheeseburger, to the fish tacos, and more. Their 'island fries' are yummy. They have a selection of Tortuga's Lie gear for sale, so be sure to browse if you have to wait for a table. They have plenty of parking -- look for the large lot just north of the restaurant. Came here for lunch the other day. Originally intended to come for dinner but glad we didn't. We waited about 15-20 minutes to be seated when I saw multiple tables open. No biggie just irritating. Can't imagine how that would have been at dinner time. The place is a bit divey inside but we appreciated the unique decor and fish tanks. Ordered drinks-one drink we got was extremely strong and the other tasted like it had no alcohol. The food was the redeeming factor; it was worth the wait and super good. Everyone was happy with it. I had a teriyaki burger and it was fantastic. My husband had a chicken sandwich and said it was really good! Overall, not sure about this one. Came here around 7:30 on a weekday and was told an 1 hour and 20min wait time but we opted to also put our name down for bar seats which we were told would've been a shorter wait. They have a bar around back, however with only one bartender and complete disarray with people cutting in front of everyone else trying to get their order in, we weren't able to order a drink. Thankfully, we ended up only waiting 15-20 min for bar seats to open up. I ordered the Jamaican jerk beef and really enjoyed my meal. It was a little spicy so if you're prone to spice sensitivity, this dish may not be for you. The service at the bar was 10/10 and the food came fairly quickly. I had the black bean and tuna burrito with rice and Hatteras clam chowder, it was delicious and very filling, I totally recommend. Our server was fantastic and very attentive and the restaurant has the beach flare with surf boards and license plates on the rafters. We stopped here mainly due to its featured Caribbean islands flavored cuisine. Many different handheld sandwiches are also offered as well. Although the Jerked dishes were nicely done, we felt that the Jerked sauce/spice used lacked heat/spiciness, like it's missing the "It" factor. The staff was friendly and helpful. Had dinner here on the recommendation of a colleague and so glad I did. The restaurant is set up is typical for a beach side restaurant. It was extremely busy but I luckily grabbed an empty bar seat. I always make a point to come to Tortugas every time I am in town. Tonight we only had to wait a few minutes for a table. We have never had to wait an unreasonable amount of time in the past either. Always a go-to when we are in the area. Staff is always so friendly, and service is great. The chicken was so juicy. The fries have a lot of pepper, and I asked for light pepper, but you can see what I got. Had to pay 99 cents for a small ramekin of teriyaki-wasn't happy about that, but it was so good! Abominable service. My husband and my handicapped, cancer& chemo-having self waited over 2hrs before deciding and accepting that we will never eat their food, no matter how good it looks or how highly recommended it was. It was so highly recommended but those locals and out vacation hostess will never send another person their way. Sooooo... the wife unit has been coming to the Outer Banks since she was a toddler, and she has been to this iconic restaurant many times since it opened, but this was my first time and I was super impressed by the following "extra" mile efforts in addition to the great food. As this joint is apparently always packed, both by locals and tourists, be prepared to wait. When we got there about 5:30 pm on a Tuesday during high season, we were told that our wait was gonna be about an hour and ten minutes. It was worth it! But let me expand on the wait time. At the back of the joint, there are two full beach volleyball courts and a corn hole set up. Also, a beach bar and several tables are under cover and outside. We ordered drinks, and our son joined the volleyball match, and I'd be darned if he didn't immediately start to dominate the game. We had 8:30pm tickets to the Lost Colony theater play in Roanoke island, about half an hour drive, and around 6:45pm we started to get a little nervous and went up to the front to see where we were in the wait process. I also passed to the shaved head dude with the giant mustache that sorta looked like a 1950s Hollywood rubbing bottle genie, that we had the 8:30 tickets, and we're getting a little concerned. With a giant smile, he walked over to the back area, cleaned and assembled two tables from the bar area, and sat us down. He then came back with menus and took our orders... we had 6 people in the group, and my wife asked him: "Aren't you working the front greeting job?" With a giant smile, he nodded yes and said that he could do both, as our emergency seating area didn't have a waiter assigned. Talk about a motivated dude! The food was worth the wait! We had hummus as one of the entrees (giant serving), delicious broth clam soup, and chips and salsa (free refills). Our main courses were three orders of fish tacos, burger, quinoa salad (spectacular), and a dozen steamed clams. I can not say enough good things about the joint and the genie in a bottle waiter/front greeter dude! Thank you for going the extra mile sir! And the food, great American fair, was also really good! Beachy vibes, just what you'd expect. The hummus was very odd. It created a weird sensation on my tongue that I can't even describe. The overall flavor was very strange. Heard great things about this place and knew it was the first place I had to try when I came down here! The wait was long on a Tuesday night about 90 minutes, but the food was well worth it. Ordered the chowder which was pretty good -- one interesting thing was it was clear. I ordered the shrimp Barbados which came with grilled shrimp in some kind of sweet, chili sauce topped with scallions and peanuts with rice, beans, and grilled pineapple. 10/10 the flavors were on point and each ingredient complemented each other well.
