Maine Oysters
Carol S.

Steinhilbers has been a family favorite for over 40 years. When my husband, aunt & uncle were alive we went at least once a week, The restaurant has exuded elegance throughout a long history in Virginia Beach. Founded in 1939 by Robert Steinhilber, its storied dining legacy is continued by his descendants. Located at the dead end of Thalia Road, the back of the restaurant has a gorgeous view of one of the tributaries at the end of the western branch of the historic Lynnhaven River. The restaurant is a wonderful place to bring visiting relatives and friends for an always fine dining experience. I wasn't surprised when my son made the choice of Steinhilbers for Mither's Day Brunch. What I was surprised by was that the restaurant, which offers only dinner, was actually serving a Mother's Day Brunch. When we arrived we were seated promptly at a table with a waterfront view. I mentioned to the hostess that throughout my Aunt's life, she had come every Friday. Timing was always when the restaurant opened, so she could get her favorite table. The hostess asked which had been her table. As I pointed it out, decades of family memories at the restaurant flooded through my mind. There was no doubt that we would order from the brunch menu. Only coffee had begun our day. We did begin with Oysters when we learned that they were Lynnhaven. The special taste & salinity of them is like no other. The Mother's Day Brunch menu featured 4 items. My son chose well. I didn't. His choice was the Soft-Shell Crab Benedict with Poached egg, crispy soft-shelled crab, Cajun hollandaise & home fries. Having been on an eating healthy and light regiment, I chose the Spinach and Mushroom Omelette with Cheddar Cheese & home fries. It was the first menu choice in 40 years that wasn't quality. The omelette was dry with the ends thin and overcooked. It was a disappointing menu item from a restaurant I've loved for decades. Of course I'll return. But I'll never again order an omelette at a special event brunch.

Tonight at STEINHILBER'S From valet parking to the final bite of a flawless experience, The filet mignon was perfect temperature at medium, the sautéed crab meat as a side was tender and sweet, the brussels sprouts as a side we're roasted to perfection and piping hot. Rod, was celebrating his 53rd birthday today. We split a wedge salad, a beautiful balance. The blue cheese was fresh and lovely. Rod had fried shrimp always a house favorite. We finished off with the Keylime pie. The best I've ever tasted... so light and airy and what would appear to be a crème Dement type item spread on the plate. A true returning of an early visit in the 70s or 80s of what I remember to be Steinhilber's at their best. What a wonderful way to start out the new year, which is almost here!...with old friends and a five star rating of food. Thank you, Dan Hunt Ghent Antiques.

My husband and I came for our first wedding anniversary. A beautiful venue with old school fancy restaurant vibes inside, from the wood walls and roaring wood burning fireplace. The weather was terrible, so we didn't get to explore outside, but we definitely will in the future! The service was impeccable, and the food was delicious. My husband ordered the lamb lollipops as an appetizer. The unique presentation made me think of Dr. Seuss, but he absolutely loved them. As a Brit, he was thrilled to find Beef Wellington on the menu, and said it was outstanding. I had the filet, which was also perfectly done. Can't wait to come back!

I had the Beef Wellington with a half stuffed lobster on the side.

The food was AMAZING. Everything was perfect. Our waiter Mike M and his 2nd waiter Ana were amazing. They were so sweet and helpful as well as having great recommendations. Thank you for everything.

I had a lovely dinner here for my birthday with my husband. You need to make a reservation. We went on a Tuesday night at 7 and the place was absolutely packed- hard to find a parking spot busy. Inside the tables are quite close together but it still feels upscale at each table setting. The servers are attentive and fantastic. The food and drinks were excellent. My husband has the paella and enjoyed it! The boozy milkshakes are a nice touch to end the evening.

We were there for dinner . Once you reach, it gives you a farm house vibe. We had booked the space for an office gathering. There is this bar where we were served with drinks and cheese and sone fruits. After that we were seated at the dining hall and narrated the history of the place. Next we were served the green salad and 1 out of the 3 entree choice. Which were crab cake, steak and salmon. The dessert options were cheesecake and chocolate cake. It was an amazing experience with some amazing good. Loved it!

Huh, no wonder they're still up. The oldest. restaurant. In Virginia. Crazy. Good. Food. Good vibes by the water , in a neighborhood wutttttt? Went here for my birthday and it did not disappoint. Got their freshly picked fig and prosciutto wrap and that was the best dish of the evening. Beat the wellington hands down. Quaint vibes with the waiter being attentive to us. Granted he was my wife's childhood friend but eh. Service is service. Gottttaaaa go again to try out the other stuff.

Steinhilber's is tucked away in cozy neighborhood, it offers a beautiful view of the water, making it romantic and relaxing spot. The staff at Steinhilber's are friendly, attentive, and if you ask they can give so good recommendations on what to try. My girlfriend and I ordered the paella, beef stew, and oysters Rockefeller -- all of which were absolutely delicious. The combination of outstanding food and excellent service makes this a place I'll definitely return to.

Came here for date night and to close out my birthday week. We had a reservation so we were seated quickly. We had a table by the window so we had a great view. Service was amazing!! The waiters were very attentive and gave great recommendations. My husband and I split the ceasar salad and she crab soup. After thresher told my husband the oysters were local farm raised & fresh, he tried 6 which he really enjoyed. Got entrees my demand got the New York strip, mashed potatoes and brussel sprouts since he knows I love them! I got the lobster thermidor. Both dishes were great!! My husbands steak was cooked perfectly and those mashed potatoes were amazing!! The rosemary made them a star!! The brussel sprouts were cooked perfectly. My fish was great, the pasta was cooked perfectly and the fish was super flavorful. The lobster was very fresh. I tried their limoncello blueberry martini and my husband got a glass of Chardonnay. We both enjoyed our drinks. For dessert we got the carrot cake, which was great as well. Definitely a great spot for date night or for a celebration. Definitely will be back when it's warmer to sit outside.

Went here for my birthday dinner with wife and daughter. We were seated right away outside. Beautiful location looking out at the gardens and water in the distance. Service provided by our waiter Reed was excellent. I ordered steak and scallops, wife ordered fresh Halibut and daughter ordered Duck and Truffle Risotto Everyone was very happy with there entre. Just a couple of comments though- No bread was offered just some very boring toast. The scallops were smaller than expected and finally two excellent surprises were how good the truffle risetto was and especially the apple pie dessert

Service definitely great. A waitress opened main entrance and led me to the hostess desk. They immediately confirmed my reservation and read that I had requested for a window seat, which I got. The server was very friendly, immediately asked if I've tried their popular shrimp dish whether as appetizer or entree. They had tiny dehydrated toast like the primo ones available in Asian stores. They also served bread although not soft/pillowy warm. It was dry and semi hard. Would have been better not serving bread and serve amuse bouche of their popular shrimps, just a suggestion! I ordered the octopus and fillet mignon with side of broccolini. The octopus was crispy on the outside but very tender on the inside. The octopus tentacle was a decent portion, loved it. The filet mignon came as I ordered: medium well with slight pink. Their house made steak sauce is good, pairs wonderfully with the steak. The broccolini was slightly overcooked, not as crispy to the bite as I had hoped.

We had reservations at 7:30 and arrived about 20 minutes early. They still seated us promptly. We had to remind the hostess that we requested the patio but that was no problem. The patio was beautifully lit. Our table had a fire pit in the middle so even tho I was in a dress, I was still warm. It took a while for our drink orders to be taken but our waiter had a large and talkative party close to our table. I believe it was the manager that stayed outside on the patio. Checking on tables, helping when needed. She even took a picture for a cute couple, which I thought was sweet. I ordered sangria which was tasty, my boyfriend had a coffee and said it was the best coffee he has ever had. We are going to inquire about purchasing some, if possible. The place is rustic and still has an old time feel. I really appreciated how the staff was dressed very professional. The vibe is very classy but not snobby. There were people in flannels to very nice evening gowns. We didn't get the impression that anyone was judgy. The crab cake was phenomenal. No filing. Get the Steiny sauce with it! The twice baked potato was also full of flavor. My boyfriend had the ribeye and it was cooked to perfection. It melted in your mouth and the flavor was on point. We had the scallop casino for an appetizer and he had the she crab soup. The soup was full of meat and thick. It was good. The sauce complimented the seafood perfectly for the casino. The prices are higher than many places but you definitely pay for the quality and experience here. It is obvious through the presentation and flavor that things are cooked to order, fresh and not frozen. The atmosphere, staff and food made our date night one to remember. The only thing I would change is to have more than one bathroom on the first floor. It was very clean though. We'd like to go back during the day so we can enjoy the view of the water. Highly recommend.

I've heard nothing but great things about Steinhilber's so I couldn't wait to try them out for a friend's birthday dinner. Steinhilber's is a beautifully quaint restaurant hidden in a neighborhood near Town Center. The exterior landscape of the restaurant was absolutely stunning at night and the outdoor seating included fire pits to keep you warm. We made reservations for 5:45pm on a Sunday and the table was ready upon arrival. The servers were very informative of the menu and provided the specials for the evening which all sounded great. We were also served complimentary bread which was warm and tasty. Our food was served fairly quickly. I decided on the Crab Cake with Twice-Baked Potato and it was absolutely amazing. The Crab Cake was a great size and full of fresh crab meat. The Twice-Baked Potato was also very good but I did have to add some salt. I tasted my friend's Filet Mignon and it was divine, especially with their homemade sauce. The restaurant manager, Kelly, came by to check on us, which I really admired. She was awesome and welcomed me to the restaurant. I wish I could give 10 stars for my experience! Everything about this restaurant was amazing and I can't wait to return.

Ask the Community - Steinhilber's Restaurant

Do they offer a happy hour?

No unfortunately

Is this a good place for elementary age kids? Is there a place for them to play/run around while we eat outside?

Not really. It is pretty dignified.

Are small dogs in a carrier permitted in your outdoor area?

I didn't see any pets when I went there. Sorry

Do you have outside seating for 7?

They do have outdoor seating, and I'm pretty sure they can accommodate a party of seven. Call them and ask for sure.

What's the normal dress attire?

Mainly business casual and a great place to dress up for any occasion.

Is there a children's menu?

Drinks: I tried the Grey Goose Strawberry Mule (10/10) it was soooo good! I was happy I gave this a try because it just might be my new fav drink. I also tried the Long Beach Tea (8/10) it was pretty good. Food: we shared some Chicken Nachos (10/10) we completely cleaned the plate. It was a great portion size, hot, fresh, and delicious; loved the flavors all together. I ordered the Spicy Jambalaya with linguine (10/10) yummy flavors, wasn't too spicy, and again, a good portion size. Tasted the Buffalo chicken pizza and it was actually pretty decent. I was very pleased with everything ordered for dinner. For dessert, we tried the Brookie (10/10) exactly what I needed and was craving. Cleaned the plate entirely. It was so good! Still top of my go to list! My overall rate of experience : 9.5/10

Our server was Nathan and he was friendly and accommodating!! I like the amount of happy hour options compared to some other restaurants with just a few. We got burger sliders with fries, calamari, poke nachos, and chicken lettuce wraps. The calamari was ok but it was some very tough ones to chew and the portion was small. The tartar sauce that came with it was good and a little spicy. The poke nachos were decent, but I'm not a raw girly to often, so I'd definitely ask if it could be seared. I put it in the air fryer at home, and it was pretty good. My daughter enjoyed it!! The lettuce wraps were just ok, the chicken was kinda rubbery and chewy. The wonton shell was delicious though and the sauce was good. My sliders were supposed to be all the way with lettuce, tomato, onions, and secret sauce. But when they came to the table they were plain with no sauce. I started to eat and about 5 minutes later the food runner brought my correct order. They said they gave me the table next to ours food. So the waiter came back to take it back, and I asked if they'd throw it away? He said yes! Which kinda bothered me. I asked since it was going in the garbage and it wasn't my mistake, could I keep it. He said the manager wouldn't allow it. With inflation why would the manager rather trash perfectly good food? It makes me nervous when restaurants take food back. If it's sat down on a table it shouldn't be returned, just take the loss, because how do I know your not going to replace it and serve it to someone else. I'm not a fan of that!! I'm not accusing them of doing that, but that's the thoughts that run through my mind in situations like that. The table was spacious at the booths and it was clean inside. There's street and garage parking. We went on a good day when it wasn't a wait for a table. The hostess was very nice. She was cheerful and engaging! I'd go back to try other happy hour dishes. Check them out!!

I really appreciate when places let you taste before committing, it's always a plus! For food, we got the pretzel bites, served with a house-made beer cheese and a tangy, grainy mustard. I love me some beer cheese. I was surprised that the pretzel bites tasted a bit like donut holes. They were softer and sweeter than the typical pretzel, but honestly, I'd order them again. We also split the boneless chicken bites with the citrus bourbon BBQ sauce. The sauce was really flavorful with a nice mix of sweet and tangy. And of course, fries on the side. The last time I set foot inside their Pleasure House Rd location was at least 10 years ago. I celebrated my birthday there as my friends were kind enough to take me out. It was a Sunday morning and I sought out a place that offered brunch. I noticed 1608 was open and decided to head over, especially since I haven't visited them in ages. When I walked in, I noticed their dining room is dimly lit - much darker than I remember. I was greeted immediately by a kind hostess and she proceeded to sit me at a nearby table and provided me with menus (one food, one alcohol). I took my time looking over the food menu, and in the meantime I ordered a pint of Center of the Universe's Bald Irishman and a bottle of Boylan's Black Cherry soda (they do not have a soda fountain). What made this visit memorable was that 1608's bartender, Hunter, was an old acquaintance from back in my restaurant days. He spotted me and came over to say hi. After my meal, I continued to catch up with him at the bar. His presence made a pleasant experience even more fantastic. I thought I was hungry, so I ordered 2 dishes - Smoked Ham Fried Rice and the Breakfast Burrito. According to Hunter, every item is made fresh in house. After biting into each, you could tell that's true. Both the fried rice and burrito were delicious and boasted lots of flavor. Although I prefer my fried rice a bit simpler (if you give me just garlic fried rice, I am SET), 1608's fried rice (veggies, garlic, soy, basmati rice, 2 runny eggs, smoked ham) had a lot going on, which made for a flavorful dish. I liked the rice and the burrito (Korean style fried chicken breast, scrambled eggs, cilantro lime, cheddar, pico de gallo) a lot. I didn't finish either because it was a lot of food (I really thought I was hungry, haha). But these leftovers turned into a fantastic dinner later on. 1608 looked clean and organized, although I thought it was a little too dark inside, at least for brunch service. That's not a dealbreaker since everything from the food to the service was as excellent as I remember. I hope to return soon with my mom. Regardless, I'll find my way back eventually. Thank you, 1608 Crafthouse! And great seeing you again, Hunter! JV

They are just south of where Holland Rd. merges into Independence Blvd. My most recent visit here was on April 23, 2026. From the outside of the business, it does stand out a bit with the large name above the entrance. You can definitely see it if you look from Holland Rd. I had seen it too when traveling down that road, but I finally came in for the first time on March 10, 2026 after leaving the Voter Registrar's Office not too far from there. Upon entering, it wasn't too busy yet, but it was a little before 4 pm, so it was still early for the evening dinner rush. The inside of the place definitely has the bar scene vibe with the bar area and televisions showing sports there, with closed captioning on. One of the bartenders said we could find a spot to be seated. My mom and I went to one of the booths available. It was just seconds later that our server came over, welcomed us here, bringing menus over, and introduced herself. The first question is always asking about what to drink. I continue to go with my usual, which is water with lemons, while my mom got Coke. After having some time to look over the menu, when we got our drinks, my mom and I were both ready to order. I decided to go with the Sloppy Joe Samich with Onion Rings as the side item, but subbing Pepper Jack Cheese instead of American Cheese. My mom decided to do an appetizer as the main course, which was the Loaded Nachos Half Size Portion. A little less than 10 minutes later, our food orders came to the table, and they looked really good, and when we went to try it out, they were definitely hot too. The Sloppy Joe Samich ended up being really good and hit the spot for me. The onion rings were good too, and were a bit of an indulgence for me. My mom really liked the Loaded Nachos and that had good flavor to it as well. Our server also told us about various specials they have through the week, so this would warrant future visits for us too. The next few visits would be on Thursdays, as they have a $7 Burger Night Special beginning at 5 pm. For those next visits (including the most recent one, except for the April 6 visit), I would end up getting the Bacon Cheeseburger With Fries (additional cost to change the side item for specials). My mom also did a few types of burgers on these visits, one being the Cowboy Burger. Every time, the burgers came out as expected and hot. The fries were really good too, as I usually do pepper on them instead of salt. There was one additional visit on April 6th, which was a Monday. We came in that day for the Fried Shrimp Basket Special. That one comes with Fried Shrimp and Fries, and is available all day. The shrimp were really good and filling too. Overall, the food, service, atmosphere, and specials have been great here. I really feel like they are a hidden gem. When it comes to sodas, they did carry Coke products, but as of the middle of April 2026, they are now serving Pepsi products. I want to note that there is a 3% order processing fee, likely for anyone paying by a card instead of cash. Even when I have been there at busier times, parking was never an issue. It feels like a family atmosphere too. On the most recent visit, they even stated that they notice us as regulars here now. If you're looking for a different place that serves more than just burgers, this place is worth checking out, as I have not seen a place around yet that has the Sloppy Joe type samich.

Overall, I enjoyed the dish with the small exceptions that the batter made the waffle really heavy for my personal tastes. I'm more of a fan of light, fluffy waffles. Unfortunately, I did not know this at the time, but the kitchen puts the syrup on the waffle for you. Personally, I like to add my own syrup because I do not like too much syrup on my waffles (and pancakes). However, those two minor issues did not take away from the dish. Also, the other aspects of the dish made up for those minor inconveniences. My partner ordered the Pongo, which was served with a fried chicken thigh, cheddar biscuit, scrambled egg, sausage gravy, house potatoes. If you are a fan of Bloody Marys, the restaurant has a selection of 4 or 5 interesting Bloody Marys. I went with the Porky's Revenge, which had bacon-infused vodka, Zing Zang Bloody Mary mix and a bacon-dusted rim. Both of us were quite pleased with our selections. Also, come here hungry because the serving sizes are quite large. Because of the large serving sizes, I thought the prices were relatively fair compared to other places the area. Actually, I would change "fair" to "generous". Both of our dishes were about 17 bucks with the 4ish dollar 'doggy style' add on. Generally speaking, our waitress was really on the ball. Although we were sitting outside, she frequently checked in us and was very professional while being funny. Hopefully, we can make another stop here during our next Va. Beach vacation adventure.

I always find the hair of the dog such a great place to eat. Great drinks. Great food. Happy stuff…read more I got the chicken and waffle, which was a fried chicken thigh with bacon infused waffle. Oh man, I should've gotten the extra sausage gravy because it is such a sin. Great vibes here in this location.

We made a special trip to Rustic Spoon for my husband's birthday because their website listed…read morescotch eggs, which was something he'd been craving forever and that we hadn't been able to find anywhere around town. It happened to be Restaurant Week, which made us a little nervous, but it ended up being totally fine. The dining room never felt overly crowded, the noise level was comfortable, and having the Restaurant Week prix fixe, drink specials, and regular menu all available gave us plenty of options without feeling overwhelming. One small note: the plastic logo cups served with the water decanter felt a little out of place. They were a bit sharp on the lips and didn't quite match the rest of the dining experience. Minor detail, but noticeable. The drinks, however, were excellent. On our server's recommendation, my husband ordered the Gingerbread Old Fashioned and I had the Salted Caramel Martini. Both were seasonal specials and both were fantastic. When we asked about the scotch eggs, our server explained they're normally a brunch-only item. We were a little disappointed (and may have made a few pouty faces while explaining we'd come specifically for them for his birthday), but we quickly let it go, it obviously wasn't her fault. What we didn't realize was that she went back and told the kitchen manager that it was his birthday and that we'd made the trip just for those scotch eggs. Since the kitchen wasn't slammed, they decided to make them anyway and surprised us with an order. We were honestly floored. My husband was thrilled. That kind of thoughtfulness is rare. And the scotch eggs were exactly what he'd been hoping for! They were crispy on the outside with a rich, savory center. For entrées, his Nashville Hot Chicken was juicy with the perfect amount of heat without being overwhelming. My Haystack Burger was stacked and delicious, though the BBQ sauce was strong enough to overshadow the pickled green tomato a bit. The fries were fantastic - crispy, battered, and perfect from first bite to last. Our server checked in at all the right times and kept drinks refilled without us needing to ask. The fact that she went out of her way to do something special during one of the busiest weeks on a restaurant's calendar says a lot about both her and the restaurant. Rustic Spoon is the kind of place that works just as well for a casual date night as it does for a birthday dinner or a night out with friends.

Upon seating, our waitress Faith came, introduced herself, and took our order drinks while we look over the menu. We decided both brunch & lunch. In a short wait everything came out hot. Overall the service was great, food delicious & great for group casual dining.
