Beautiful restaurant great service great view! It's kids friendly and we had a great waitress ! Unfortunately, the food was not that great. It was very bland and the drinks were very bad as well The bartender did not know what she was doing. I had to return the drink twice. It was just a lemon drop pretty easy to make. I ended up exchanging it for a wine. My husband had a old-fashioned. It was very watered down and sweet. It's a shame it's a beautiful restaurant, but it's literally been a run by kids right now. They need a better management team in there to overlook everything. Everything got late to our table. It wasn't our waitress fault she was so apologetic. I really want more for this place. It's so pretty and it has a great view. I would recommend new management or manager and to upgrade the menu and train the bartenders . First time to this location celebrating my husband and I's 21st wedding anniversary. My husband scheduled a reservation, so were greeted and sat immediately. Our server game and got our drink orders quickly, and followed up to take our orders. We both got soups as a starter and I got the scallops and risotto special, and my husband got the gnocchi carbonara. We both really liked the soup and the food was pretty good. We were interested in dessert but our waitress didn't bring them for almost 10 minutes after we had asked, and in that time our food was settling and we were feeling full. By the time we got the dessert menu, we just asked for the check and left. Overall everything was great, only a 4 star rating because of how long we had to wait at the end. Where it falls flat: the calamari was over cooked and pretty greasy. The filet was flavorless. I felt like the Demi-glacé was overpowering and gave the supposed to be elevated dish -- pot roast vibes. To finish the night we shared the chocolate cake. The menu states a 'double chocolate gnash cake'. I assumed they meant ganache but this cake was anything from rich. It was like eating pudding cake. My husband and I went to Amber Lantern for our wedding anniversary and it did not disappoint! We'd heard so many good things about this place and were so excited to finally try it for our special night. We started with the baked brie and wow! The puff pastry was so light and flaky, the cheese was perfectly melted, and the fig sauce on top gave it the perfect touch of sweetness. For our entrées, my husband had the rack of lamb with mashed potatoes and asparagus, and I went with the scallops over mushroom risotto and spinach. I LOVE scallops and these were cooked and seasoned absolutely perfectly. My husband was just as satisfied with his lamb. We wrapped up our dinner with the lava cake and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. We met some family here for dinner while they were back in town to enjoy each other's company while trying somewhere local none of us had been before. The exterior looked more like an industrial/office building than a restaurant and the main entrance was a little awkward to find as it's on the side of the building (you have to follow signs to a side door which takes you to an elevator up to the restaurant's entrance). The restaurant interior could use some updates and character, it was a little bland and boring inside. We had a reservation for our group of eight and were seated promptly upon arrival. Our waitress was attentive from the start, though her attention dropped off after the food arrived and plates sat dirty on the table while we chatted for a while after eating. The drink special - Salted caramel espresso martini - was a little overly sweet with no espresso flavor making it hard to enjoy, not easy to finish and not want to order more than one - which we usually have two or three with dinner when we're spending a few hours over several courses socializing. The table shared crab Rangoon, baked brie and spinach artichoke dip as appetizers and all three were a hit. The baked brie was perfectly melted inside a pillow of pastry. The mango and fig glaze and chunks on top offered a nice contrast to the richness and boldness of the brie but became a bit much in terms of sweetness as you continued to eat more than two or three bites. The spinach artichoke dip was simple but delicious, and the fresh mini pitas were the perfect texture. Though I didn't taste any, the others at our table were impressed with the crab Rangoon, with was a special of the evening, not on the regular menu. Served with a sweet chili dipping sauce. Both my husband and I each had the filet and both felt the meat itself was bland but the Demi glaze was overpowering, almost like pot roast gravy which was disappointing as they had cooked each steak perfectly to our preferences. Risotto was excellent, generously portioned, with a nice medley of flavors and cooked perfectly, as was the asparagus - bright and crisp. Others at the table enjoyed their entrees, one mentioning the salmon tasted as if it was sashimi grade. Please beware! If you go to this restaurant and do not like a meal, you will be charged 50% of the price for returning it and ordering a new meal per the owners policy. I am not a picky eater by any means and love trying new meals at new restaurants. However, I took one bite of the mahi mahi entree, spit it out in a napkin and sent it back as I refuse to spend $30+ on a meal I cannot enjoy. I am unsure if it was the risotto or mango sauce that tasted sour. I'm unsure if it is supposed to taste like that or not as this was my first time eating there. This is an absurd policy. They lost out on money as we had no problem paying for an entire new meal that I could enjoy and we would have both gotten dessert as we were celebrating a special occasion. While it's definitely in the most unassuming spot: off the highway and by what appears is a lot of construction. Once you get there, you'll find a peaceful, refined restaurant that's nice but not overly pretentious or fussy. The menu is a mix of seafood, American, and pasta dishes. So there's a good mix for pretty much everyone! Don't sleep on the warm bread. It's excellent. They also have delicious drinks and cocktails if you're looking for a fun libation. Instead, you are in there sitting in a booth, joining a party of 30 or 40, 5 feet away. Last time we went, it was a bunch of swearing, dropping F bombs, and add alcohol, likely a sports bar with expensive food. The sides especially the pesto which had some artichoke in it were delicious. I love artichoke and it was tender. The feedback I received from my friends who had a variety of dishes from the fish to steak dishes was they enjoyed it very much. I have never had to add salt on my steak except here on the east coast. Not sure what is happening here but if you spend forty bucks on a steak then it should be seasoned. This was my 2nd visit to Amber Lantern. It seems like my 2nd visit to certain places is never as good as the 1st. Unfortunately this is the case for Amber Lantern. I'll start with the waitress Kayla. She was very nice and conversational but she failed to clear our table of empty dishes and empty bread baskets until the very end. She also didn't seem to be very knowledgeable about the food. I got the lobster bisque soup. The good points are very tasty AND huge pieces of lobster that you can see and taste and the lobster wasn't overcooked. Not so good point is it was over seasoned. You could taste the old bay and that's fine in my opinion the mis step was putting more old bay on top when they served the soup. It was just too much salt. For my main dish I got the salmon. It was cooked to perfection. You have the option to get mashed potatoes or risotto. I chose mashed potatoes and asked for parmesean cheese on top. The potatoes were also very tasty. In my opinion the mis step with this dish was the sauce. It was served with a raspberry type sauce. The color and flavor were off putting. It resembled pepto bismol and it did not complete or enhance the taste of the salmon. My date got the crab stuffed shrimp. The buttery lemon sauce that comes with that would have been much better with the salmon. Just my opinion... the mixed veggies were the best. Seasoned to perfection. The atmosphere in the restaurant was great but the personal conversations and laughing coming from the wait staff was a little distracting. Not sure if I'd be willing to go back?? We went for an early dinner to take advantage of the beautiful sunset that so many reviews mentioned. Our picture did not do it justice, it is awe inspiring! The jumbo seared scallops were delicious and full of flavor. The select fried oysters entree was savory and plentiful. Chef Josh came out during our dinner to make sure we were happy with all of our dishes. When he found out it was our anniversary he said he would have something special for us. Water was offered and brought to our table. Clean glasses with no residual from the last diner. Already, I knew we were in for a treat. Our orders were taken by our waitress appetizers first and asked if we needed extra time to order entrées, we did not, so she took our dinner order, which was just perfect. Shortly out, drinks came out. Appetizers next a most delicious fresh chilled shrimp cocktail. As we enjoyed the shrimp and drinks. The mood led us to comforting conversations amongst the low lighting. Setting the mood for our evening out. Enough of that now... Our tables was cleaned by the waitress as she informed us that our meals would be out shortly, just moments later she served impeccably crafted entrées for us to just marvel and appreciate the Chefs pride on a plate!! I continued to stare at my dinner, almost too beautiful to disturb. Appropriately, I removed my cloth wrapped utensils and dined on the most MAGNIFICENT rack of lamb, I have ever tasted. Mango jam with chunks of mango compliments this perfectly cooked meat. Mixed al dente vegetables and rositto. The risotto came n a scoop. I do prefer mine creamy and smooth. Not a big deal here tho. Hub Bae had steak. House made garlic mashed with the same vegetables. The steak was served with a demi glaze the I also thought compliments his well seasoned steak. We both totally enjoyed this meal to the 10th degree. I opted for Creme Brulee for dessert. My one and only was made to perfection. We will make this our first but not last visit here. I think with some tweaks this place could be better, but sadly, not a great experience here. My husband brought me here for my birthday dinner. Let me start off by saying that our waitress was having a bit of an off night, so, no harm no foul in that. We all have them! She was still very kind and attentive. The only drawback was that we never had our waters refilled even once. The place itself is tucked away in an archaic building, amid an industrial park. I think the only reason they keep the location is because it overlooks a portion of the water. But, the ambiance isn't really anything to write home about. The food here is just alright. We started with the calamari which came out cold. The chili sauce was nice but that was about all. Unfortunately the waitress spilled my margarita upon setting it down which had a salt rim and ALL of the salt when into the drink. It was undrinkable and I had to get another. :( I did say I wanted to also switch to the house margarita, but she instead brought the same pomegranate margarita. This flavor just doesn't work for a margarita. The warm bread and butter was nice though and we ordered 2 baskets of it. We both got steak with the Yukon mash and ordered it medium well. It came out charred. Such a disappointment for a $38 piece of meat. We waited awhile for our bill and got 2 pieces of lemon Berry cake to go. Our party of 6 grew up in Tidewater and we could have chosen any place to celebrate a milestone 50th wedding anniversary. Based on reviews, we decided on Amber Lantern. Our party brought anniversary gifts and a custom cake to celebrate the milestone. More on that shortly. The service was good. Despite not being crowded, the hostess seated us away from the views of the water? Our server was gracious and accommodating. We told her that we were there to celebrate a 50th wedding anniversary. Folks at nearby tables congratulated our happy couple. We had to ask a couple of times for another napkin and she did not bring spoons with the appetizers for the included sauces. The food was good as well, though some of the dishes were not hot. The pasta on the Tale of the Sea entrée was undercooked. Now for the real reason for our 2 star rating. On the door to the elevator going up to the restaurant was a sign stating that you couldn't bring food to the restaurant (see picture). That is NOT mentioned anywhere on their website. We had a cake. After dinner, we asked for a knife to cut and serve it. We were told that we couldn't consume the cake as it represented a "liability to the restaurant." Most places we've been for celebrations have offered to keep a cake chilled, helped with serving it and even joined in the recognition of the special event. We spent over $550 for our party. We were not allowed to enjoy our cake, AND, despite a robust dessert menu, they didn't even send out a complimentary dessert for the anniversary couple to share. We saw another couple get a slice of cake with a candle to recognize a birthday . . . our guests of honor were celebrating 50 years being married, a rare and epic accomplishment in this day & age. So in summary, good service, good - not great food, and poor choices made by management. We will look elsewhere for our next celebration, they lost our business and anyone we tell going forward. There are too many choices out there for fine dining venues. I have been eyeing this place for a while and finally decided to go for our anniversary. The view wasn't the best because all you saw was industrial stuff but the food and service made up for it. We started off with the prawns. Just fried shrimp nothing to rave about. My husband for the crab stuffed shrimp and I got the shrimp pasta but substituted the red sauce for basil pesto. The crab stuffed shrimp- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! This was amazing! The shrimp were big with generous amounts of crab on it. I want to go back just for this dish. The pasta tasted homemade. It was so good with so much flavor. The service- our server was always checking on us and food came out pretty quick despite the shortage in staff due to covid. I was thinking about the key lime martini but didn't know I couldn't commit so I asked if I could just taste it. The bartender made me a generous amount to taste. Though it was good, I couldn't commit to it. I just am not a martini person but it was so nice of them to make it. Let me start by saying we are absolute foodies and love a good meal with good service . We dont mind paying top dollar for that at all if and when received. Sad to say this visit that is not what we got. My girlfriend had a surprise birthday party for me at Amber Lantern. She had 14 of my closest friends and family there waiting to enjoy a great evening. She had a reservation which all went smoothly . We were the only big table in the the establishment. There were a couple other 2 tops with people in them but the place was very slow at the time. Location around is not nice at all. It's near the landfill and on a back road of businesses thats not appealing at all. Most people would probably turn around. The building itself is nice and clean. The views of the water behind the building and the fountain are the only nice thing. The rest is not that nice. The service was good at first and the servers were friendly and professional to us. We all ordered our drinks which were OK. My dad asked twice for more tea and never got it. Refills stopped coming after the first round. A few appetizers were ordered and I didn't hear any complaints about those . We all ordered dinner that ranged from $30 to $48 dollars a piece . I had the fillet mignon , risotto , and veggies. The steak was 8 ounces and wasn't the best flavor or cook by any means . There was a tiny scoop of risotto on the plate that was ok but kind of bland , the veggies were good .The meal wasn't terrible but it wasnt good especially for $45 . I didnt complain I just wanted my girlfriend to be happy and everyone to enjoy themselves. 4 people ordered the Mediterranean chicken . They all complained how dry it was and a couple of them sent it back. It wasn't edible it was to hard to cut and very dry. We all still laughed and enjoyed eachothers company making the best of it but I don't believe anyone was very happy with the food. When desert came 4 people ordered the Lava cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The server didn't tell us they were out of ice cream. Just took our orders and after a good while later brought out 4 lava cakes with half a dollop of whip cream and a thin slice of strawberry. So we read the menu to make sure it said ice cream because that usually comes with ice cream. So we asked for the ice cream then are told they are out and sorry about that. Trying to eat it and see if it will work it doesn't work. We ask for it to be taken off our bill and they could take it back since we weren't informed of the ice cream being out and they said they would give me $3 off. We had to ask multiple times for it to be removed because at this point we're getting a little upset with the quality of what we're paying for. Finally after over a $1,000 dollar tab. We went out back took a few pics near the fountain and left. Everyone today feels the same about the place and feel we didn't get our money worth and will not return . We ordered to go from this restaurant so I cannot comment on the ambiance but baby the food!! If you have not tried this place I highly recommend giving it a shot! I loved the duck. It was perfectly cooked by the time I was eating it at home. I will say I'm used to a more moist risotto so that was different but the flavors across the board we phenomenal. The tiramisu was delicious and light and the waitress was so kind as to package some to go ice cream. LOVE THAT! All and all a great meal with great portioning. Came here with high expectations but was utterly disappointed. The crab cakes were bland, the soup was salty and the filet mignon was very bland. The food was not at all what I expected, also the ambience in the restaurant was kind of stale and dated. The reason for 2 stars is the service. This is one of our regular spots. My husband is obsessed with the rack of lamb and insists on visiting before and after every deployment. I dream of the risotto, it's so delicious. We love sitting outside when the weather is nice. The views are beautiful, and the service is always wonderful. We've done to go orders before, and even those are top notch. We highly recommend this place to everyone. We usually come with our 2 teenagers and toddler, but sometimes we come as a couple. They are always very accommodating. We love to dress up for dinner, but it's also appropriate to dress casual. read more

I'd like to give 4.5 stars but they will not allow it. So now I'll start my review. This was is a hidden gem. The food was hot and very tasty. Our waitress was pleasant and helpful. The aura was cozy and beautiful for a date night or just hanging with friends. We went during the evening hours. But I'll definitely be back to sit outside and enjoy the view soon! read more
