Delicious, fresh food. Warm, friendly service. The habanero salsa is so incredibly good that it's worth the trip alone.

This place was recommended to me and my boyfriend by an obx local and WOW. The food was so good. We got the quac and queso for an appetizer and it was really good. I got a taco bowl salad which was a little smaller portioned than I thought, but its okay because I wound up not even finishing the taco shell because I was so full. My boyfriend got the chicken and cheese quesadilla and he said it was really good. We got a side of garlic and cilantro fries and the garlic was just perfect (not overpowering like other places). Overall the food was pretty cheap and really good and when I come back to obx this will be one of the first place's I visit. read more

The Bad Bean Mexican Restaurant is the absolute worst Mexican restaurant I have ever eaten at. While visiting the beach with some friends and everyone was in the mood for Mexican we picked this place to try something new. I was a little annoyed by the fact of paying for Chips and Dip but it was okay, however they bring you very little salsa and the salsa is a $3 refill. The girlfriend wanted lemonade but nope don't have that. Refried beans at a Mexican restaurant is usual right? Hard Shell Tacos? Nope not at ol Bad Bean. I had mahi tacos and they tasted really fresh and I will say they did have some of the best salsa I have tasted, but their queso dip had a weird taste to it - no my favorite. My husband had the California burrito and he thought it was just "alright", nothing special. Per Yelp reviews, we visited the Bad Bean Baja Grill for dinner. I ordered the fish and pork belly tacos. I liked the chimichurri on the fish taco. It added a nice flavor. The pork belly tacos were fantastic! I only ordered 1 and after my 2nd bite, immediately wanted to order another. The pork belly was juicy with a nice flavor. Excellent! Found out they have a $3 draft beer special (legit beers like Stone, Ballast Point) on Fridays and also small plates for $4 or $5 - made our first dinner in OBX absolutely amazing! Nice bartenders and decent service while we sat at the bar. One of my choices was the stuffed avocado which I got without cheese to keep it began and my bf tried the pork belly tacos which were awesome , he says they were amazing ! Delicious and inexpensive! My boyfriend and I ate here and managed to get two meals and chips and salsa for around $20.00 before tip. I got a mahi mahi taco and a shrimp taco (both of which were scrumptious), but I didn't get the beans and rice which is good because it would have been too much food otherwise! The mahi mahi would probably be too spicy for those who don't handle spice well, but I loved it. My boyfriend got the chicken, bacon, and avocado burrito with the garlic cilantro fries. Overall, this place isn't bad, there just wasn't anything too great about it either. I order one of each of the meat tacos (beef brisket, pork, and chicken). the beef and pork were nearly identical to me, and didn't have too much flavor. The chicken was better, but nothing too great though. We order the dip sampler, the guac was pretty good, the fresca salsa was your standard red tomato salsa, the verde was your standard green salsa, but the queso was blah. I thought the queso had a really funky after taste that was not pleasant. Others in my party didn't think it was that bad, but I didn't care for it. We also order the cilantro fries, which were good, but I felt odd eating fries at a Mexican place, but whatever :D Lastly, I ordered a house margarita which was good, but it also annoys me when a Mexican place doesn't have margarita glasses for their margaritas (they were served in pint glasses). Overall, it wasn't bad, but wasn't great. The service and ambiance is excellent and all the artwork is great. I had the lime margarita, the fish, shrimp and pork belly tacos and loved all of them. I have a gluten allergy and they were easily able to accommodate and served my tacos on corn tortillas (that were delicious). On this trip, I had the margarita of the day (pineapple mango that day) and my husband had a Yuengling. Margarita was perfect. We shared the Bad Bean Nachos and added their medium salsa. So good, so fresh and the pickled jalapeños are amazing. We also shared a hummus wrap and garlic cilantro fries. Oh maaah gerrrrd, I want to eat those fries every day of my life. So delicious. Although most reviews said to try the pork belly tacos, my family and I don't eat red meat. Instead, we opted for other interesting and delicious choices. To start off, my parents got a classic margarita which they seemed to enjoy. My dad ordered the portobello mushroom and goat cheese quesadilla, my mom got a mahi mahi taco, and I ordered one chicken taco and one black bean and rice taco. Each of the meals were prepared perfectly, but I would not get the black bean and rice taco because the beans seemed a little off for my taste. Decided to try this when both Yelp and Happy Cow gave it good reviews and we were not disappointed! Great unique and delicious choices for both vegetarians and carnivores. The chips and salsa are made in house; we were hungrier than we thought and we inhaled the first serving of chips and dove into a second. Then our entrees came and we were full but it did not stop us from chowing down. I could not decide between the roasted pepper and black bean quesadilla and the black bean quinoa burger; our server did not hesitate a second before recommending the burger. I don't know what the quesadilla was like but the burger was awesome! Husband had the Havanna, basically a Cuban sandwich. The garlic cilantro fries were delicious!! Service was beyond poor...management was extremely rude, wait staff was rude, and food was inedible. Charged two different prices for the same margarita, one being twice the amount. Food was so salty that is all you could taste. Manager was far from helpful in solving issues. Had my check with change in it thrown at me with pennies in it for change. I would leave negative stars if I could but that wasn't a option. My family met here for a get together while I was in town. They all live here in the OBX and some of the family are working in local restaurants and have been in this type of work for years. I'm leaving one star because the food was ok,but we didn't like the service. First off the waitress seems to have an attitude from the beginning. Then there was a problem with the check. We paid out the dinner check which seemed expensive for tacos, but there was 9 of us and we did get drinks appetizers and meals. After the dinner was paid for we sat around and had a few more drinks. When the bill came we realized that they charged us $17 for each margarita (we got 2 this time) When we questioned the waitress about the cost difference she said we ordered the feature ultimate pineapple margarita. We didn't we ordered the featured pineapple margarita off the specials menu. We would of never paid $17 for those drinks that tasted like straight pineapple juice. When we brought this to the manager's attention he said the waitress said she told us we ordered the ultimate. This never happened. The waitress had a hard time keeping up with our orders let alone telling us the difference between and ultimate and regular featured margarita. They said they couldn't do anything for the first check but they would fix the second check. We figured they would comp us for the margaritas and just charge us for the beers. Well they didn't they charged us the price for the featured margaritas which was what we ordered in the first place. The manager said he was loosing money because we got the top shelf alcohol? We wouldn't of know weither this was top shelf alcohol or not it . It seemed like they were scamming us. And we all know that the $48 I paid for margaritas could of bought them a fifth of Patron. So unfortunately this was our first and last trip to The Bad Bean because it doesn't matter how good the food is if your customer service is ugly. read more
