Primarily a takeout establishment, with a couple of tables outside. It was getting busy when I arrived. Ordered a burrito with chicken and an order of rice. It took forever to receive, with many coming after me with larger orders leaving before me. After a day of playing tourist, I wasn't in the mood, but didn't explode! They did apologize upon receipt of my order. Good thing! The burrito was excellent! Unlike most you buy in Virginia, this one didn't have a cheese sauce on top, so it had to live or die by what's inside! It excelled! Great spices, but not too much! I don't even have to think twice about it, the worst Mexican food I have ever ingested, including Taco Bell! The service was horrible, and somehow the food was even worse! Fatty, greasy and full of gristle! The enchiladas were not actually enchiladas. They were cheese, rolled in a bit into a tortilla with some salsa, put on top and then put in a warmer to melt the cheese. Ate 1/2 of one of them out of the three included in the meal. Everything else went in the trash where it all belongs. Legit - authentic. Not flashy or super fast but the best Hispanic food in NH/KDH. Worth a trip up from the Oregon Inlet campground.

Great spot to grab authentic Mexican -- we stopped in after a long drive to the Outer Banks. They have a solid sized menu to choose from as well as pastries. Our group got a burrito, quesadilla, and tacos (you pick the meat and then add the fixins yourself) and we were all happy with our meals. I'd give it 4 stars instead of 5 just because I've had slightly better tacos. But overall a great place! It's counter service with a couple tables inside as well as outside. Our food was ready within 10 min which was awesome after being on the road all day. Glad we stopped in! read more

Fish Tacos were overloaded with shredded lettuce and cheese. Despite this being a traditional seeming place, these are not prepared in the traditional Mexican fashion. A real find in the OBX. Locals seem to know about this, but not the tourists. Place is authentic and under priced. It is mainly a take out place with a few tables, but is well worth it if you are not looking to sit down inside. Tacos are really good and you can customize them from the helpings bar. Bakery items are also tasty and at a great price. We now go there every time we are in the OBX. read more

This is my husbands favorite stop in OBX, he is an extremely picky eater so being able to find something that we all like is sometimes difficult when visiting. This now our mandatory first stop - we cannot go to our rental until we have stopped to pick up tortillas, tacos and tamales to last him for a couple of days! Totally bummed with the tacos I got today for take out. They came with meat and nothing else. The wetness from the meat dissolved the tortilla it came on. The beef had gobs of fat and no flavor. I asked for a side of rice and beans and they came in huge Tupperware containers-enough for 8 people. It was a bizarre experience. A taste of Mexico - Authentic! We used to live in Arizona and drove down to Puerto Penasco, Mexico 4 - 6 times a year. The food at this restaurant is the way customers are treated refliect the very best restuarants in Mexico. The restaurant is a hole in the wall. The inside is not much to look at, but they do have a nice outside seating area. But ... the FOOD is outstanding! My Dad had the chicken quesadilla. He loved it. My wife had the chicken burritto - She is a big fan of chicken burritos - It was among the best she's had. I had two taco special (fish and shrimp). Very very good. They have a beverage case which reminds me of Mexico. Many of the same drinks. Another customer came in and had a HUGE bowl of soup. He was clearly enjoying it. We came late and there were no baked goods out. My wife told me that we have to come back to sample what the Panaderia has :). Update: We came back for baked goods. Went to this establishment a few days ago for take out, placed the order and noticed they had several patrons not wearing face masks which are mandated by the county. Got my tacos and the garnish station is wide open with spoons shared by everyone. Additionally, it is a small place so social distancing is not even possible. Business should protect all customers and enforce local and national health guidelines. Tacos were okay, health and safety precautions are poor. read more

Also noteworthy are the large and flavorful selection of salsas and other taco fixings that are all made in- house, I think. Looking for something different to eat while hanging in the OBX for a week and decided to give this place a try. It's small and if you aren't looking for it, you will miss it. They have a few places to sit but it's not really a social distance type place, so if this bothers you, get it to go and wait in your car. The food was really good, with great portions. Even my picky kids liked their meals. The best part is they bake a lot of sweet breat, etc and so dessert was a no brainer. We each picked something based on how it looked (pinky pastry, sugar pastry, etc) and none of us complained about that either. Authentic Mexican food on the Outer Banks (period). Went here with my family after a day out on the beach and everything from the service to the food was exceptional. I ordered the shrimp taco, fish taco, and lamb bbq and for a guy my size (medium build), three tacos hit the spot. They're all right around $3 each so sub $10 for a very filling and delicious meal. We eat a lot of Mexican food at a lot of Mexican restaurants from very humble taquerias to more upscale places. I really prefer the humble places with home cooking and when we found OBX Tortielleria I was very optimistic that we had a place for good tacos for lunch. I am very sorry to report disappointment. The basics are there but the execution is poor. For me this is not a matter of style, the style is exactly what I was looking for. It also was not a matter of ordering the wrong things, we sampled six different things and I would not go back for any of them. While they will assemble burritos and quesadillas, these are places where you go for tacos. They offered carne asada, lengua, tripe, barbacoa, carne adobada and cheek. There may have been a couple more. Ms T ordered a fish taco and a taco de carne asada. I ordered one each; barbacoa, lengua and carne adobada. All of our tacos were ordered as single tortillas. They will serve them on double or single tortillas, your choice and they don't pre-mix the cilantro and onion so we did not have to pick the onion off. I also ordered black beans, which turned out to be a pint container. Fish taco - Ms T reported the fish (mahi) to be tasteless and dry. No grill flavor, no salt, nothing. It was served with cabbage and cilantro. Carne asada - the beef would have been good except that it was way oversalted. Assuming that this is done at the time it is grilled, perhaps it was just a bad day or you could ask them to go easy on the salt if it is systematic. Carne adobada - as salty as the carne asada was, the carne adobada was even worse. One of us is usually reaching for a salt shaker. We don't think we over-salt, but don't eat salt free either. This was excruciatingly salty. Since adobada is marinated and cooked ahead, this is the way they made it. The chile flavor was fine, but "wow", the salt. Barbacoa - The barbacoa was unsalted, but aside from that it was extremely bitter. I have no idea what this could come from. Picture the bitterness in the hoppiest triple IPA you have ever drank, eliminate the citrus flavors and that would taste like sweet milk compared to this. I choked this down, just to get rid of it. Another bad day? I don't know. I have never experienced anything quite like it. Lengua - the lengua was also unsalted and tasteless. Tongue has a distinct flavor and this had none of that. It did not taste stale, but probably was not fresh. It just tasted like nothing. They fried it a little to give it a little crispness on the outside. The black beans were OK, slightly mashed with good flavor, a little heat and modest salt. They were the best thing of the meal, by far. The salsa's are decent, one red with some chile in a light tomato based sauce and one green based on tomatillo. Both had slight heat. I used them to help eat the tacos. I am predisposed to like little taquerias like this and probably tend to over-rate them. I think my two stars is a little bit generous for what we had on this day. The style shows authenticity, but authenticity is not a guarantee of good food. read more

We had to stop back in the OBX Tortilleria before coming back to HRDS from our spring vacation.. Picked up two dozen Tamales to bring home and hord in the freezer !! Chicken, with either green or red sauce.. yupp, I'll take a dozen of each please. By far the best tamales I've ever had. Odd experience from start to finish. The menu is really small. The kid working up front spoke Spanish, but I actually wanted to ask if he's Mexican. He was totally clueless about the menu, and didn't seem to understand questions about the menu (which was typical Mexican food) despite speaking fluent English. The chilaquiles were good--though the red sauce was really spicy. The burrito was small but I asked for borrego (lamb) in it which made it tasty. Salsa bar also great. I was headed south on 158 and decided to stop in for some lunch. I'm glad I did. I had a fish & a vegetarian taco. Full of great flavors - cilantro, lime, black beans, cheese, picante. When you walk in, grab a menu from the counter--it has pictures so you can see what you're getting. In spite of this place not really having any decorations other than a bakery case and drink cooler, the food is awesome. It's fresh and light and it's a nice change from all the heavily buttered seafood stuff usually find at a lot of grill-type places on the obx. We got shrimp tacos, a veggie quesadilla, chips and salsa, and since about five people walked in while we were waiting for our food and ordered a large horchata, we tried that too; it was all delicious.
