UGH ! We read the reviews and heard it was the place to go so we did. This place should be a 1minus the food quality was no better then that is offered in your grocery store frozen food isle. The bill we left with for two people was $93.60 for 1 burrito and 1 taco dinners, included a sides of chips /salsa/black beans (all small portions btw). I had 1 mixed drink at the bar while waiting it was $14 (ouch!) To add insult to injury I was charged an additional 20% for a take out order. This is our second time we're at this place and the service is beyond bad. Let me start, we sat at the bar for approximately 10 minutes, with no one even looking at us, or at least acknowledge us, or the simple thing to wave at us. We got nothing from the three people behind the bar, so finally my son in law, stood up to ask one of the bartender for service, he's response was, yell outloud..."ILL GET TO YOU WHEN I HAVE A CHANCE" HE PROCEDE TO ASK HIS COWORKER, IN SPAINISH HOW LONG WERE THEY THERE DIDNT THEY JUST SIT FOR WHILE". We drove from Kitty Hawk to eat at the Agave Roja for dinner last night, Sept 13, 2025 based on a trusted friend recommendation. We had a reservation and were immediately seated. The restaurant was quiet with two front staff, inside restaurant 3/4 full, and outside was full. The staff were gracious as well as fast and busy serving others. Our margaritas were way beyond the best margaritas I have ever had. The food quality and presentations were both significantly above my previous experience in Mexican restaurants. We arrived at 7:30 and left at 9:00. If you are looking for an exceptional Mexican Restaurant experience then look no further. If you are looking for a fast Mexican Restaurant then stick with your favorite Taco Bell. Also, keep in mind the season you are in. If you have a house with 10+ people and it's high season, pick-up Taco Bell or go to a large restaurant designed to handle large groups. read more

BEST SERVICE! Food and vibes were so good we had to come twice during our 7 day vacation. Ramero was awesome. So personable and had us laughing the whole time. This Mexican restaurant was really good. Came in for lunch and our party ordered tacos, fajitas, and salad. The entire wait staff was very friendly. We were greeted to a restaurant that was almost full. Atmosphere was great, with plenty of families, and everybody had smiles. The chicken quesadillas had lots of flavor. Well marinated meats really shows in everything you order. The Asada beef tacos were my favorite with the power marinated flavor and spices. You get chips to share, rice and beans on the side. Definitely recommend this place over any other Mexican restaurant in the Corolla area. Can't recommend it enough. Left happy and pleased. read more

It's always fun finding a Mexican restaurant on the Outer Banks. This one is conveniently located In the Food Lion shopping center. It appears basic on the outside but upon walking inside, the place feels more creative and authentic with decorations along the walls, Mexican music playing on the speakers and a hostess really tries to get you seated in a timely manner. The chips, salsa, and guacamole were the best dishes period. Homemade, tasty and abundant. The menu offers most of your typical American-esque Mexican dishes while providing some vegetarian options (like a tempeh-laden enchilada mix). The prices aren't cheap- my one gripe with the establishment - but Corolla is one town that can get away with it given its local tourism economy. read more

This was the second best place I've had Mexican at in America so far. It is very pricey but it is a lot of food and very well flavored. I never thought I'd spend $20 on a quesadilla but dang was it worth every penny. I would stop by here again. Chips reminded me of chilis restaurant. They can make kids sized meals as well. read more

When visiting Outer Banks for work, I was craving Mexican food and wanted tamales so bad so I visited Agave Roja because their menu had it. I was seated at the bar since the tables were used/not cleaned yet. No big deal. The bartender didn't offer me a drink and I had to ask for water. Other than than that, he was fun to talk to (we had a conversation about surfing competitions, drones, and traveling). When I was looking at the menu, I asked about the tamales. Apparently, tamales are too time consuming to make so Agave doesn't have them on the menu anymore. I went with the mole enchiladas. Everything was really good including the complimentary chips and salsa! Even though they didn't have tamales, I'm glad I chose Agave for lunch. Delicious Latin American themed restaurant in Corolla. This is a small restaurant that has both indoor & outdoor seating but reservations are recommended. They have a really nice bar area. They have a nice selection of tequilas and the food was fresh & fabulous. Vegan Enchiladas were plate cleaning. The quesadilla was as big as my head. Since it is off season, you need to call for latest opening hours updates. Definitely worth a visit every beach trip. read more

The longer we were there the more we understood that it doesn't have enough room with inside and outside seating for as popular as it is. Was one of the best Mexican meals we've had in a long time. The cocktails were delicious as well. I had a Paloma and he had a spicy jalapeño something that was really tasty. I don't now where to start with this place. We called last minute for a catered dinner for a family trip. John was super helpful, informative, and prepared a veritable FEAST with maybe 2 days' notice. We have food left over for DAYS and we will be eating it to the last drop because it is/was DELICIOUS. I don't know if the catering menu is the same as the restaurant menu, but the salmon veracruz and fajitas are simply not to be missed here. Period! John is a gem, has excellent communication, and is super easy to work with. That said, get HALF the food you think you need because it will be a TON of food. We will be eating this all week, and I am grateful that it is so good and that I love Mexican food lol. Cute place in a local strip mall with awesome servers. Our waitresses were super fun and helped our large group quickly. We were able to make a reservation in advance and they were ready for us when we got there. We started off with their queso, guacamole, and salsa. The queso was creamy and flavorful. The guacamole was chunky which I really liked! Unlimited chips and salsa are complimentary. Some of my friends got the quesadillas and said they were "the best quesadillas they've ever had." I got the fajitas which were okay. To be perfectly honest the chicken was dry, the veggies more burnt than I've ever had with fajitas, and the shrimp was mediocre. Another person in our party got the pork tacos and the meat looks like tree bark. The server kindly took her dish back and took it off of our bill. The beans and rice are served family style and were good. Everyone enjoyed the margaritas. Overall, this was a laid back place with fun and kind servers. I very rarely find a restaurant that's so good it's worth reviewing and Agave Roja is worth it. On the last night of our trip to the outer banks I was craving tacos and all of the restaurants around Duck were either closed for the season or only served tacos on flour tortillas. My husband somehow pulled up Agave Roja and it was so worth the drive. We've lived all over the US from California to up and down the East coast. This is definitely the best Mexican food we've had outside of Cali. Everything is fresh and authentic and so good. My picky eaters loved the salsa, guacamole, and the chicken quesadillas. If you're okay with some heat ask for the hot sauce they make in house, it's spicy and delicious. My husband and I had the shredded beef tacos and the carnitas and they were both delicious (and gluten free). Seriously, my only complaint is that the pickled onions could have been cut a little thinner, and only so they wouldn't fall off as easily. The tacos were stuffed! For drinks we each had the cucumber and jalapeño margaritas and they were amazing. They sell the mix to take home and I'm already looking forward to making more this weekend. Call to make a reservation. You can sit at the bar if it's open but the actual seats are pretty limited. We had a party of six and it's a good thing we made a reservation. Our waiter Romero was fantastic. He was super attentive, friendly, and quick with all of his tables. It might just be a little hole in the wall but it's comfortable inside, not too loud even with a large bar, and very family friendly. They had more than two high chairs! Ceviche appetizer was very tasty...But while the shrimp and bay scallops were fine, the rockfish was too assertively flavored for my taste. I recognize they probably use the local catch, but maybe flounder? My wife liked the fish tacos-light, wispy batter and perfectly fried. Black beans were oustanding. I had the pork shank- 5 STAR! Absolute stunner. Perfectly marinated (I'm guessing Mexican spices and citrus). Fall off the bone, large portion. Braising liquid married perfectly with farro and beans. I wanted to get a straw and drink the braising liquid. This is a must and the equal of any entree I have had in the OBX. read more

If you know me even a little you know I love magaritas. It's my go to drink so of course we had to find some while on vacation here in Corolla NC. This place was near our rental and looked good. We rolled up to the bar and was greeted by Steve with some salsa and chips. He had a great sense of humor and had recommendations for us that were amazing. I went with a classic marg and some queso to go with the chips. The queso came out with grilled tortillas. I've never seen this before but it was so good. The marg was great as well I had to have 2. The environment and Steve really made this place great. My personally favorite part of our trip so far. 10/10 read more

We have been coming here for years on vacation. This year, we ordered take out. Much to our surprise, when we returned home and read the receipt, 20 percent gratuity was added. When I called the restaurant as to why we would pay for a tip, I was told that is standard. She also apologized for not telling us that on the phone. Again seasoning was the problem here. I had to add salsa to give it a lift. The sides were bland and not very flavorful. The black beans had a metallic aftertaste. Service was excellent. Vegetarian/vegan options galore. If you're veggie, ask the waitress for the off-the menu items (it's worth it!) Their cooks are vegan, so they have many, many options. I can't wait to come back next time I'm in OBX. + To start off, the chips come out crispy, oily, and delicious. We were really hungry and they kept on refilling ours. + Family guacamole bowl ($15) was huge and fresh. + Vegetarian rice and beans come out for the whole table family style, and they refill when/if needed. + The Mexican corn (elote) is a must have, and had a really "umami" taste. + Tried the veggie enchilada (with tempeh) and the veggie tempeh tacos (off the menu). Both delicious. I especially like the touch of the pickled onions on top of our veggie tempeh tacos. + To top it off, the service was amazing.
