Vegetarian/vegan options galore. If you're veggie, ask the waitress for the off-the menu items (it's worth it!) Their cooks are vegan, so they have many, many options. I can't wait to come back next time I'm in OBX. + To start off, the chips come out crispy, oily, and delicious. We were really hungry and they kept on refilling ours. + Family guacamole bowl ($15) was huge and fresh. + Vegetarian rice and beans come out for the whole table family style, and they refill when/if needed. + The Mexican corn (elote) is a must have, and had a really "umami" taste. + Tried the veggie enchilada (with tempeh) and the veggie tempeh tacos (off the menu). Both delicious. I especially like the touch of the pickled onions on top of our veggie tempeh tacos. + To top it off, the service was amazing. Great food! We started as a party of 10 and then had 3 additional people show up 20 minutes later which they accommodated without a problem. We stopped in for a couple of margaritas today while on vacation and ended up staying for lunch. We were greeted and sat by the Bartender/Owner Steve. He quickly brought over menus and chips/salsa. We ended up ordering margaritas (which were excellent) and we ended up going through roughly three of them each. After a quick look at the menu I ended up ordering the fish tacos. I can honestly say that these were very possibly the best fish tacos I've ever had. The fish was so fresh and all the ingredients together made a perfect combo. They also came with free/bottomless rice and beans which were really good. The others that I had lunch with all had a similar experience, saying that their food was amongst the best they've ever had. This was really a great stop, I'd say one of the highlights of the vacation in terms of meals. The owner Steve was cracking jokes non-stop and really interacted with us a ton. Located in same strip mall as Food Lion. Plenty of parking This is a Mexican place but they have a wide variety of foods and not only standard Mexican stuff (taco, burrito, enchiladas, fajitas, etc) Under the house specialties, they have some different foods from normal Mexican. I ate salmon (pescado veracruzano) and the red sauce (see picture) was flavorful and added to the dish. I would definitely recommend it. Their online menu says its opakapaka which also would have been great, but on the day we went, it was salmon. It came with grilled corn which was almost just as worth it as the main meal. Pretty impressive. The service was great and we had vegetarians eating and they served vegetarian beans and rice (normally Mexican rice is cooked in chicken stock or other non vegetarian preparation) My wife and sister in law had the Dos especias margarita with jalapeno and el expreso de la pina (coconut and pineapple, see pictures) and both of them felt they were great. They also provided a dessert since we had a birthday. I am not a dessert expert but I think it was the Tres leches cake (see picture) and if you like cake, wow that was very rich. Food- freakin delicious- Service - atrocious They didn't take our reservations down when we placed them six hours prior, we had to order waters for the table after we put in our entree orders, waitress didn't even come by until 10 minutes after we sat down. I had the carnitas tacos which were not exactly what i thought they were, only because they were not street style and the meat was really dry, but the delicious drink i had washed it down and i ate them rather fast because they were still great. Decent food and generous portions for take out. They do not answer their phone. Forget making a reservation or placing a take out order. So, you drive there, and try to order take out at the bar. Apparently, only one guy can take your order. He gave me grief for ordering "so late", when actually I got there at 7:10, and they close at 9. He gave me more crap, which later I found out was for the entertainment of a couple of locals at the bar. The only reason I did not bail is because my family was hungry and I was on a mission. Came across Agave Roja after dinner one evening and stopped in just to get a margarita. Bartender, Milky, was so friendly, and the margaritas were excellent - Mine the classic; Husband got the cucumber/jalapeño. Had such a good time we came back for dinner (and more margaritas) the following evening. Carne asada tacos were unbelievable - steak is braised and so flavorful. If you like a little extra spice, ask for the homemade hot sauce! Tried several variations on a couple margaritas - great tequila and mezcal selection - overall wonderful time. Now, I have to justify my review, by saying that Agave Roja is a fantastic restaurant, but how fantastic can they be if THEY ARE CLOSED for most of the day? So... two years ago, we drove 8.5 hours to Corolla only to find them closed for lunch? Last week the business was in the same situation it was two years ago. Restaurants should understand that when they are closed during prime daylight hours, people don't just go find another place to have lunch, they find another town to vacation in. read more

Poor service. Slow and inattentive. Food was nasty. My daughters ordered the steak quesadilla without peppers and onions. They arrived at the table with onions and peppers. We sent them back and minutes later they brought them back having picked the the peppers and onions out. They didn't even eat them because they still tasted the peppers. read more

Location here can be a bit confusing. The restaurant is located near Dairy Queen straight across from their catering business and Food Lion in the same shopping center. The signage for both of their businesses are nearly identical. Took me two trips here to figure this out, glad I did. They have a great selection of Mexican Food along with several vegetarian/vegan options. The service was a bit slow, but given that we were trying to kill time, it wasn't a big deal. We had the guacamole appetizer which was just okay. The chips and salsa were good, as were the entrees. The had great music playing and the staff was very friendly and helpful. I had the pork (carnitas) tacos and really enjoyed them! The serve the sides (rice and beans) family style but in these really tiny bowls which was kind of odd, but other than that - it was pretty solid! read more

Went based on the fact that nearly all 400 reviews were positive. We went in a party of ten, four adults six kids under 15. Guacamole was fresh, chunky and perfect. The salsa was clearly made fresh, just the right amount of spice and the chips were also clearly made on the premises. Main courses were excellent, without describing in detail, great variants on the Mexican theme, but with the expected staples as well. margaritas, were well made and prepared. Absolutely dumbfounded at their reservation/walk-in-handling. We ate there last summer and it was decent. We went back tonight and found that more than half the tables were empty and yet they couldn't talk a walk in. We are a party of five and they mentioned that since it was 5:55 and they had a 5 top available but with a reservation for that table at 6:45 that they couldn't take us. Again - more than half the place was EMPTY. And we said we could wait to since we have a small child we could fit a booth (which they had as seating 4) - since there were 4 empty ones but still nothing. Just not sure what was going on there. Took our business elsewhere and unlikely to try this place again. Lost business. Lost repeat business since our (at least) annual OBX trips have us eating put 100% of the nights. read more

I was interested in ordering carryout because I have a baby and didn't want to disturb other customers by dining in. The restaurant's website advertises that they do carryout, so I gave them a call. It took 21 tries to get through to someone to place an order (the message on the phone tells you to keep calling until you get someone.) I successfully placed my order and was told that gratuity is included in carryout orders, which I didn't mind. What I didn't expect was that it is 18%. The items on the menu aren't cheap, so the 18% gratuity on a carryout order packs a punch. After all the effort to get this meal.....I found meat in my vegetarian enchiladas. The other food in my order was cold and not worth the price or hype. I'm so disappointed and hungry. Baby's asleep so I can't go get it replaced. No one answers the phone when I call. read more

This is a place you cannot miss while in OBX (Corolla). The drinks are TOP NOTCH. We had the lime margaritas, the strawberry margarita, pomegranate margarita and white wine sangrias. All were very delicious. The chicken enchiladas were amazing also. They are food restriction sensitive also. The burrito was good, the carnitas tacos were great and the shrimp tacos were good. The fish tacos taste was good, but the fish was colder than room temperature. The drinks made up for it though. Service was good, our waitress laura was very welcoming and helpful. Bring the fam!
