This place was amazing. Casual feel with upscale food. There is an outdoor patio, and though it's located in a strip of shops the patio feels cozy and intimate (and there's a good amount of shade with the umbrellas). Our server Conan greeted us with an awesome communication cocktail menu and thin, warm, fresh and crispy tortilla chips to accompany the salsa. We started with the Jalapeño and Cucumber margarita (his) and a Fresh Watermelon Mojito (mine). Perfectly crafted. It was a late lunch so we decided on shared appetizers. Guac topped with crab meat, chicken flautas, and the tostada topped with local soft shell crab. We "weren't that hungry", but the food was gone in a minute. A little pricey, but everything was very good with lots of local ingredients and you can tell they take a lot of pride in their menu. I've had Mexican food all over the U.S., and go figure the best dish I've ever had was in Corolla, NC!! Every cocktail we ordered was spectacularly unique! Words can't say how good they are! This place is phenomenal. My husband had a classic margarita, which was perfectly mixed. The watermelon margarita was incredible - fresh watermelon muddled into a classic margarita - so refreshing. Not too sweet. I had the seafood enchiladas which were very fresh and light and tasty - perfectly spicy, with the shrimp and crab cooked perfectly. He had the half rack of ribs - loved them. This place is set back a bit off of the street in a strip mall, so it could be easily missed - don't let the location put you off. We're so glad we came. Agave Roja is a place you don't want to miss if you enjoy upscale Mexican food. We had dinner there early one weekday evening, and highly recommend this place. It's small inside, so either get there near their opening time (5pm), or make a reservation. We started with the guacamole (small size) and ceviche. While the guacamole was a little less chunky and more wet than we like, it still had good flavor. At $10, the ceviche was our favorite. The portion was huge, and it was absolutely delicious. For our entrees, we had the asada (steak) and pescado (fish) tacos. Tacos are served three to a plate, with beans and rice served family style (i.e., bowls to share at the table). Both were great, but the asada tacos slightly edged out the pescado ones in terms of flavor. Service was just perfect at Agave Roja. Otavio (sp?) was our server, and was both helpful and attentive. Oh, I can't forget to mention their fabulous mojitos. My husband and I both had a watermelon mojito. While the watermelon wasn't that evident, the mojitos were not too sweet, and had just the right amount of alcohol. We left happily full, and I couldn't have asked for a better meal. read more

My family, a group of 6 adults and 3 very small children, went into Agave Roja yesterday and we cannot praise the food nor the service enough! The hostess and waiters were very accommodating to our large group and welcomed us the second we walked in the door. The owner of Agave waited on our tables himself and did everything he could to make our experience top notch. Nobody at the table had an empty drink the whole meal and the owner kept chips and salsa coming until our main courses, which we didn't wait long for. Out of everyone's meal, the carnitas tacos were the best! Hands down the best carnitas we've had. The meat was extremely tender and seasoned to perfection! Definitely recommend. The chips were warm, salty and delicious!!! Then we had the classic marg, the prickly pear marg and the watermelon marg. The watermelon was a real standout - super fresh and yummy! Between us we order the fish tacos, pinto beans with bacon, chile rellenos and the tamale de casa. Everything was very good, authentic and unique - the chef didn't take any shortcuts! The waitress did a great job if accommodating 25 of us for lunch. She was polite and the service was good and quick. She even split the check for everyone. I got the chicken tacos. For the price and size, the tacos were delicious. We also had the table guac with the mango habanero. The mango habanero is more sweet than spicy. The table queso was delic and went quick. A good restaurant in a beach town is a gem, snd Agave Roja earns my loyalty not just by cooking up some great Mexican, but by having solid vegetarian and vegan options. Everytime I've they're great about making sure my rice, beans, and the rest of my food is prepared without butter or the usual cotija cheese on top. The tempeh tacos were great, but my love of fajitas makes that my go-to order. On our last visit the wait for a table was over am hour, so we ate at the bar. Make reservations! In hindsight, the website does indicate that they're closed from 3-5pm, but it would be a good idea to update the Yelp listing and perhaps lock your doors if you don't want customers walking in and interrupting the staff day drinking at the bar. This place had some solid food!! We went to order take out since the kids needed to nap and we needed some lunch. We ordered a good mix of stuff on the menu and all of it was really tasty! We had a spicy margarita while we were waiting, and boy was that delicious. They make their own spicy purée from jalapeños and they don't use the fake sour mix stuff so the taste is really great. Feeling a little misled by all the great reviews - although perhaps the in-restaurant experience is so perfect that any horrible takeout experiences fade away. Placed an order for six people that was fairly straightforward (tacos, guacamole). There was a LOT of confusion on the phone; for example, we were placed on hold and transferred to someone else three times, and one person said they delivered, then recanted. Clearly the people answering the phone have a lot going on, but that's not an excuse for poor customer service since our dollars are as green as the people who come in person. Upon arriving home with the food, we discovered a few oddities. The corn chips were in a plastic shopping bag and included lots of almost-black burnt bits. All the entrees were missing beans and rice. So on. We proceeded to try to eat, but the tacos were very dry... not to mention it's weird to have a tiny bit of taco filling wrapped in two floppy corn tortillas (instead of the typical single tortilla per taco). We called the restaurant politely three times trying to get the beans and rice issue resolved. The first time, someone put us on hold sighing, "I'll see what we can do for you" and never came back (we waited 15 minutes). The second and third times, no one picked up, so we left voicemail asking to speak to a manager. Of course no one ever called. We do not expect perfection during busy summer days, but we do expect when things go wrong, the restaurant shows some sort of desire to correct it. You have just guaranteed we will never come back nor recommend your establishment to any of the many friends who will be visiting the area. read more

We came in to Agave To Go and it was completely empty on a Saturday night. We were told to sit down and order. A man brought us chips and salsa which was nice. We were out of water and chips for 50 minutes with no apology. We asked for more chips and they were given by the man, however. We asked when our food would be ready, he said 3 minutes. We asked again, and the man looked as if he had no idea (no apology). 20 minutes later, there was no food out. We went back to the bar and asked the men in the kitchen when our food would be ready, and the chefs looked like they had no idea we had even ordered food. Keep in mind we were the ONLY customers in the restaurant for the entirety of the time (aside from 2 ladies sitting at the bar).
