Food came out fast and was very fresh. The ceviche was amazing and it was a generous portion as well. The elote was soooo good and my shrimp tacos were excellent. My mom and cousin really enjoyed their margaritas and their food as well. We went on a Tuesday night so it was very crowded because it was Taco Tuesday but we got seated pretty fast. They do have a cart that comes to you table so you can order tableside guac but that just seems super cheesy to me. I would have given the place a 5-star rating if the bathrooms were cleaner and if the dining room looked a little more kept, but the food and service was good. Definitely will come again! read more

The food was delicious and came out incredibly fast. I was very surprised when both of our orders came out in under 10 minutes, but both orders were correct and very good. We were staying in Nags Head, NC when a coupon book at our hotel caught my 11-year-old's eye - Plaza Azteca Mexican Restaurant in Kill Devil Hills looked promising. Google showed a solid 4.4 stars and it was just an 8-minute drive, so we decided to give it a try. The overall experience was really good. The presentation of food was on point, the drinks were colorful and fun (check out the layered frozen drink we tried!), and the service was attentive and friendly. But here's why I had to take away one star: the chicken fajitas were not served sizzling. They came in a regular plate instead of a hot cast iron griddle, so while the flavor was definitely there, the chicken became chewy as it cooled off mid-meal. That sizzling effect isn't just flair - it helps maintain the texture and temperature. That said, we'd definitely consider coming back if we're in the area again. Disappointing. I really don't like writing negative reviews but sadly, Plaza Azteca, earned this one. It was a very disappointing experience because our previous visit three years ago was very good, so good that it made me crave to order from them again. I was really looking forward to a repeat especially after a long day of driving. I first attempted to place an order online, but their website wasn't cooperating so I called instead. Ordering over the phone was easy and the person taking my order read back everything to confirm they got it right. I appreciated they confirmed everything and didn't rush me off to take the next call. They said the order will be ready in 15 minutes, and true to their word, it was. So far, so good. I then drove off with my order for the three minute drive back to the hotel. Unpacking the dinners, visually they looked ok, but they did not look quite like we expected because we received something different than what we ordered. We were both starving though, and really enjoy Mexican food, so we decided to just keep the order as-is and hope for the best. Big mistake. My wife ordered a tamale and chicken enchilada, but instead received two lukewarm enchiladas. One was filled with some kind of thick and gooey mystery cheese and the other with a mixture of ground beef and some kind of mystery filler "stuff". Her order was clearly either messed up or mixed up with somebody else's order. None of it tasted very good either, and she could only finish half because it didn't have a good taste. She begged me to make a run to 7-Eleven nearby to get something sweet to get rid of the taste. My order was also messed up. I forgot to tell the restaurant to not make my burrito east coast gringo style, and to my horror, it was smothered in some kind of bland sauce and this predictably made the store bought generic flour tortillas they were using to become a soggy sheet of mush. Yuck, liquid tortilla. That was my fault though for assuming they would prepare the burrito Mexican style, but the filling inside the burrito also was not what I ordered. Instead of chicken, it was more of the ground beef with mystery filler stuff like what my wife had. My enchilada also had the mystery ground beef stuff. Even the rice, which is the easiest thing to make, was nothing at all like typical Mexican rice. It was sticky and bland. It was like steamed rice but colored orange. I tried to finish, but couldn't. Very disappointing. Not even remotely close to like our previous visit. Our orders were completely wrong and not tasty at all. Definitely nowhere near being "authentic". read more

The food here is quite good. chips and salsa are a cut above average. The server was nice enough to entertain my school age kids attempting to order in Spanish which was appreciated. Services is quick and follow-ups were frequent. the decor is interesting particularly some of the murals. AC was pumping pretty cold on our visit - but we did come at an off time where the restaurant was pretty dead so maybe not an issue. I love this restaurant. Everything about it is great except the jungle walk to the bathroom. We always get the table side guacamole and this is the only place I order alcohol out because their jalapeño Margarita on rocks with salt is so amazing that it's worth it to me. We get the fajitas for two. Pretty much I come to obx once a year and this is the first restaurant we visit! Prices have stayed the same last 3 years and the amount and quality of food you get is worth it. The seasoning on the fajitas for two is awesome and you get chicken and steak and shrimps and pork. Oh man the pork is probably the best you even had anywhere. Servers are always friendly. They play current hip hop Spanish music so you get to listen to the latest and greatest. This is our 2nd trip here for lunch. We came back because we enjoyed the food so much on our first trip here. We definitely were not disappointed this time either. I appreciated the calorie counts on the menu (the burritos are HUGE and can totally feed two people). I felt like I had to leave a review particularly because of the particularly good service. I liked the enchiladas more than the burrito because of the texture of the wrap for enchiladas. Drink specials (Friday night) included $9.99 jumbo flavored margaritas (we got guava and traditional). These margs were huge! My guava one was too sweet for me but I always forget how sweet guava juice is. We also ordered tostones (not on the menu) for only $3 and two cheese quesadillas with sour cream and salsa for only $5. The quesadillas were probably the best I've ever had. I think Plaza Azteca has been making an effort to improve. We normally frequent La Fogata in Kitty Hawk, but thought we would have lunch here this time. I was looking for huevos rancheros and seeing none, switched to a fish plate of some kind. I also decided that we should try some of their table made guacamole because we are both raw onion free and we can request it that way. They made us excellent guacamole. I received a call right when the guy came to make it and I did not see how many avocados he used, but the serving was very large. I think it might have been three. This was worth going for. Ms T ordered a taco salad with ground beef and it was loaded with beef. She was quite happy with it. I ordered Pescado Azteca and this was also a good dish. The fish could have been grilled, but it was fine, served smothered in grilled shrimp, sautéed spinach and mushrooms with some queso fundido. I asked for beans instead of rice and received neither, but after the huge bowl of guacamole and the fish platter I really did not need them. I am going out on a limb here with four stars. The guacamole really made me round up. The taco salad was what you would find most places and the pescado showed that some thought was given and it was well executed with the spinach being perfectly sautéed. I used to come here and enjoy the Sopa Azteca which they no longer serve. I'm sure I will be back next time I am hungry for guacamole. I need to ask if they will do some huevos rancheros. read more
