Came in Sunday late afternoon lunch with my dad. Did AYCE menu. The price was very reasonable for lunch($20.99). The atmosphere was more like western restaurant than an asian type. The food selection was a lot, the only exception is the sashimi. Food quality is pretty great! The food was not too oily and was prepared properly!Probably the best AYCE place I have ever been to! Everyone raved about August 8 when it first opened up in Toronto, so we had to try it for lunch. Our impression = why? This was easily one of the worst sushi meals I've ever had in Toronto, if not ever. The rolls and nigiri were put together with no finesse. Everything was falling apart. As for the dim sum, they were overly salty and also falling apart. One of the shrimp dim sum came out within 30 seconds of ordering, and it was watery and overly salty. It appeared to be microwaved. The tempura was bland, and the teppanyaki beef had no flavour at all. August 8 was by far one of the worst meals I've had in a long time. Returned for a follow up visit. Sadly there are inconsistencies with their food. Ratio of rice to protein in the nigiri has increased. Sushi rice wasn't as flavourful as before. Food is not much impressive, just enough but the service is so bad. I came here with my friends tonight. We picked AYCE so we ordered quite many items but it's our habit, order Once then eat. While we were eating, a waitress came and Reminded us to leave early because we would be charged more if we still stayed. This was my first time I heard that so I asked exactly how long we could stay. She said sorry and asked her manager again. Then she said it was her misunderstanding. Her manager meant that we had to eat all food, otherwise they would charge more. But we were enjoying our meal. We haven't ordered anything more. Only talking and eating. Fantastic restaurant! First time coming to a dim sum restaurant and was incredibly satisfied with their unlimited option. Literally, you can continue ordering as long as you're hungry. You order on an iPad that sends your request directly to the kitchen and it comes out within 5-7 minutes. No waiting for a waiter to come and take your next order. I think it would be a little difficult with a larger group using one iPad but it was just two of us and was PERFECT. The quality of the food was fantastic and so delicious. The overall ambiance of the space was chic and cozy. It was $30 for unlimited dinner on a Sunday but we were told they have lunch prices during the week for unlimited that are $19. Highly recommend the beef teriyaki, the sweet and sour chicken roll, the tempura yam roll, and the spicy dragon roll! YUM! read more

Surprisingly mediocre. After my own 40 years of enjoying authentic dim sum and 30 years of enjoying sushi, I expected more from August 8 on Spadina. The sushi was "ok" but not rolled firmly, and some of the fish they used seemed waterlogged. There was a large variety to chose from. The hand roll was good, but the additional tobiko I had asked to be added was left off. Wholly disappointed by their sub-par dim sum. Har gow was rubbery (although the shrimp inside was good), sui mai was good (passable). The sticky rice's inside meat was a pasty mess lacking the traditional piece of Chinese sausage or shredded meat or anything else that I know should be in traditional sticky rice. There wasn't a really decent variety of dim sum, either. I've eaten similar or better dim sum I've microwaved from frozen packages bought in supermarkets. The salmon sashimi was presented on ice. Nice touch, very smart to keep the fish cold. Best thing I can say about the food. The tabletop laptop order system is ok, but it's difficult to see the screen with the type of lighting they use (more contrast needed). Larger fonts please, too. All in all, it's not worth the price and I won't be going back. However... ...I will be returning to a dim sum restaurant a couple doors down on Spadina: Rol San's "All day" dim sum is authentic, delicious, there's more variety, and costs considerably less. Not AYCE, it's a la carte, but the bill will not be anything close to August 8's. I'm sorry I couldn't rate August 8 higher. I had high hopes for a unique dining experience based on the price. A 2.5/5 experience for me. The quick service and the presentation and atmosphere of the restaurant was what saved the rating. I came with a friend to try out the new Spadina location and was disappointed. The dim sum was below average. I ordered the siu mai, har gow and the deep fried shrimp dumplingd. The siu mai wasn't chewy and the meat felt like it wasn't grounded properly. The har gow was worse with its hard and dry outer shell but the shrimp filling was alright. The deep fried shrimp dumpling was more shell than filling so all I tasted was the crunchiness of the shell. I ordered the spicy salmon, manga crab roll and salmon and butterfish sushi. The sushi was good but not the best as I've had fresher sushi elsewhere. Then we ordered the yam and crab stick tempera. The yam tempera was too oily to actually enjoy it. It was so oily that the tempera kept slipping from my chopsticks... For dessert, we had ice cream and my friend ordered the mango pudding. The ice cream was good but my friend didn't like her mango pudding. She said the top of the pudding tasted good with the manga flavor but as she go to the bottom of her cup then it was just jelly so she was fairly disappointed. We each paid ~$23-4 with tip for lunch and for the price I paid, I could find better food elsewhere. I really had high expectations for this price considering the great things I heard about the other location but I can't justify coming back here with the price + better AYCE choices out there in Toronto. read more

First of all, food-wise, it's definitely one of the better AYCE's downtown Toronto. And it's both sushi and dim sum, my two faves. The quality of the sushi is good and I like how they make the sushi with just a good amount of rice, unlike other places that put so much rice to it to fill you up cheap. The torched sushi are also decent, I really like the Shrimp & Cheese torched sushi. The seared ahi tuna sashimi and unagi sushi also good. The siumay is ok, not the best. The har gow and curry octopus were pretty decent. Secondly, the iPad is convenient for ordering purposes so if you eat a lot like I do, you don't have to keep calling them to order more. They also give you the exact amount of each thing you order, as opposed to lowering it to what they presume you can consume. The only negative I would say with this place is the unorganized entry. There is no one really responsible to get people seated and when they get busy, prepare to be ignored for the first 5 minutes when you get there. We (2 of us) asked for the bigger booth because we can eat and always have problems with tiny tables. One of the servers mumbled some excuse (obviously making things up because he was so not confident about the answer), basically saying we can't have the last booth because there's a group that reserved. No reserved sign on the booth though, there was reserved signs on some other tables. Then the third couple after us got seated at that booth, not a group and they also didn't reserve. They asked for table for 2. All the other tables were also filled with mostly couples, so i don't know what the deal is with him not letting us get the booth. So weird. We asked nicely. Anw, whatever. The bathroom was ok and clean enough considering it's Chinatown. If you're normally a Red Bean ice cream fan, i'd skip it if i were you. It was kind of gross, tasted nothing like red bean, more like artificial milky strawberry more than anything. I'd come back. It's more expensive than other AYCE's, but despite it's shortcomings, i'll be back for the convenience of having sushi and dimsum together. We tried August 8 on Spadina for dinner on a Saturday night. We were seated quickly and offered tea and water as soon as we arrived. There is a nice mix of dim sum and sushi on the menu. You order through a tablet on your table, which is ultra convenient. You can also request the bill through the tablet. The rolls were made fresh and tasted good. They seemed to be a little heavy on the rice. The dim sum dishes came out hot but you could tell they were once frozen and reheated. The quality of food is decent but for over $30 per person, I expected a little bit more. read more

For anyone who knows about August 8 from Hamilton and Burlington, it was exciting to hear August 8 was coming to Toronto. Unfortunately the Toronto location falls very short in terms of quality and pride in the sushi craft that exists in their original locations. It is very apparent that the sushi chefs are more concerned about the bottom line than reputation of the brand. The stinginess of premium ingredient use and proportion of ingredients in the sushi is very low quality. They pack the sushi with cheaper ingredients like Rice and avocado and short change you on quality ingredients. The chef's need to go to the Hamilton location and do some training. Learn about the famous raindrop roll because you are just botching it completely. It's not even in a raindrop shape?? There should be an equal ratio of mango and cream cheese which should be the stars of the roll and it shouldn't be soo big from rice that I can't eat it in one bite. Please if you want to compete in Toronto bring your game. Will not be ordering or going to the Toronto location again. August 8 is best where it originated. read more

Me and my family went for a birthday dinner And we had a couple of problems first off they advertised a whole birthday cake for free if there were 6 or more people at the table, there were 9 of us and they told us that the advertising was just an advertisement that they didn't actually give out whole cakes for free. Second me and my mom went to pay for parking because our time was up we told our family and friends we were coming back and even told the waiter, when we came back they had removed chairs and a table because they "needed" them the table was empty for half an hour. Third of all when my sister was ordering they came up To her and grabbed the iPad out of her hand and said we need to take this, in a rude manor, they charge the 15% in tip in the cheque apparently because there were more than six of us yet they couldn't provide the cake that they advertised. Get ready for smaller portion sizes (example - here 3 portions of sticky rice = 1 at a typical dim sum restaurant), but that's the beauty of AYCE - your appetite is the only limitation on the amount you order. Sushi isn't bad. Small pieces of fish though. Ordering through the tablet is a quickly worn novelty. I miss the idea of asking the server what they recommend. Hot food is hot. Service is quick. My boyfriend and I went here on two separate occasions. The first time we went, service was good and food came out at a good pace. The sushi options wasn't the "freshest" or best either for ayce, but their dim sum options were actually quite good. Fast forward a couple moths later, we decided to give August 8 another chance and boy, we regretted it. First off we ordered 7 pieces of salmon belly with some other food dishes for the first round but only three came out after 15 mins of waiting. So we tried ordering more with some other dim sum orders. But the salmon belly did not show up.....at all...we thought maybe because it was during lunch time the kitchen was busy so we decided to wait. Another 15 mins went by with no salmon belly so we asked one of the waitresses to please check to see if the salmon belly was coming out or if we should try ordering more on the iPad (we kept thinking maybe they didn't receive our order). For some reason the waitress came and gave us our BILL (we were still eating) and I kindly said "we're not ready to pay yet, we asked for the salmon belly" to which she stared at us blankly and lost and I repeated "I asked if the salmon belly is coming out because we ordered it but it hasn't shown up" . She then proceeded to take back the bill and continued on helping other customers so I assumed she didn't understand what I was saying. Another ten mins went by and my boyfriend asked another waitress to check on the salmon belly. She went and checked and lord and be hold, the restaurant RAN OUT OF SALMON BELLY. BUT DIDN'T BOTHER NOTIFYING US FOR FORTY MINUTES WHILE WE KEPT TRYING TO REORDER THREE TIMES?!!?? A simple "we don't have it in stock anymore" would of saved us the forty minutes !!!! So we said we will just pay. Also when I was eating my dessert, mid way, a male staff member just took my dessert (that I was STILL zesting) and cleared it with other empty dishes. like... it was right in front me and my spoon was in my mouth still. I know they wanted to be quick at cleaning but good grief! (Also when we were paying I gave the first waitress my money to which she kept scrambling around because apparently she couldn't find change for it, to which the manager had to get involved and get change but didn't know who the change was for, and when he asked her she was clueless and I had to raise my hand to let him know it was for me. Decided to come here for lunch the other day with some friends and was not disappointed. I mean nothing stood out to make this place exceptional but for an AYCE sushi and dim sum restaurant, the food and service was great. It was 18.99 plus tax, which came about $21 so not too bad considering its all you can eat and they have a variety of stuff. I am obviously not a dim sum expert so I do not know the standards that people have for the dumplings and such but personally I found the shrimp dumplings to be alright and the sushi to be good but my friends and I really enjoyed the foods from the appetizers and tempura section the best. I do not remember all the rolls we got but we pretty much stuffed ourselves with the appetizers that when the actual sushi came it was hard for us to genuinely enjoy the rolls. Nonetheless, I think this is a pretty cool spot to check out if your in the area or if you are in the mood for some ayce sushi, but you could probably find better! read more

I went there last night with a friend. Both of us felt sick in the night after going there. The atmosphere was okay and some of the food tasted decent. However I did find small fish bones in their eel twice, and one time it almost got stuck in my throat. This mistake just felt unacceptable and unsafe. Will never go there again. read more

The food is good but the customer service at the end was horrible. The waiters are very nice but I believe it was maybe the manager who was very rude. Never mind the fact we asked for the bill and it came 15 minutes later after asking for it time and time again, and restaurant wasn't even that busy. We get out cheque nicely split into 4 as I was with some friends. We all paid out amount and more since they only take cash or credit and we don't have credit cards, my bill was $26 and I gave $30 and one of my other friends bill was $28 and they paid $40 hoping to get his change back. The manger or someone that was wearing a shirt and a tie... came back with out change but it only had $6 in the tray. We were all trying to understand where our change was and why he didn't give us out change, never mind the fact one my friends should have gotten $12 dollars back in change and only received $6. The man came around and asked us what was wrong, we explained how we didn't receive our change and he had the nerve to say "I assumed it would be your tip" A $6 DOLLAR TIP? From one individual??? TIP IS NOT MANDATORY AND YOU SHOULD TAKE PEOPLES MONEY WITHOUT ASKING. Tip is gracious and a gesture that you enjoyed your customer service, tip is a CHOICE. We were all nervous and confused and didn't say much after that. I never got my $4 dollars back which I would have only tipped $2 because of the bad customer service but this was ridiculous, they should have given us our change as its our money. Never assume someone's tip EVER. I regret saying this to the mans face. Btw my friends and I are all 17 and I'm 99% sure he was taking advantage of us and would have never pulled something like that with adults. You never EVER assume someone's amount of tip. Came for late lunch on a Saturday and i instantly regretted for choosing this over Rol San. I must say this place is an ayce sushi disguised as ayce dimsum because the choices for dimsum is very limited. Came in and no one assist us until 15 mins later a server came and asked "oh no one gave you water?" 20 mins after ordering, the first 4 pieces of salmon and tuna sushi came out with a bowl of Udon soup despite the fact that we ordered dimsum once we seated ourselves. The udon soup was actually decent and chewy udon noodle texture. Sushi quality is expected at any other ayce sushi. We asked 3 servers in total to go check on our order and no one came with a proper explanation. So i asked them to get us the bill and willing to pay for what we ate which is 10 pieces of sushi and and tiny Udon bowl which came up to $21 after tax. I was so hungry and dissapointed so i didnt check the bill. But even more upset when supervisor/manager gave us the bill without saying sorry or explain but simply told us that he knew about the situation so we only charged by this amount. read more

I came here after watching blogTOs video about all you can eat dim sum, and was thrilled with the idea since I love going to authentic restaurants in China Town to get dim sum. The sushi was mediocre, not the best but good enough to eat and not complain. BUT the dim sum was obviously store bought and previously frozen, how am I aware of this??? Because I've had frozen dim sum from Metro and they taste and look the same...and lucky for you its $4 at Metro versus almost $35 at August8. If you're okay with frozen pre made dim sum go for it! But DO NOT GO if you are expecting homemade real DimSum. If you're looking for a real AYCE Dim sum place and not a fake publicity stunt like August8, Rosewood is about a 5mins walk away. Waited over 30 minutes for a table after the host told us 5 minutes max even though the restaurant was half empty. The sushi was mediocre at best and the salmon sashimi wasn't the freshest. Honestly don't waste your time with this place. We also waited over 15 minutes just to get water and when one of the servers brought us our food there finger went in to the sauce we were then supposed to dip dumplings into. Gross. The only highlight was the shrimp dumplings everything else was pretty generic - nothing special and definitely won't be returning. read more
