My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary in Saint Augustine for several days, and we needed something light to eat for lunch. We were just walking around by the Cathedral Plaza and I remembered there was a Greek restaurant near the Cathedral. We walked up to it and noticed that they served a Greek salad. We entered, were promptly seated, and handed menus. Typical Greek fair, but we were interested in the Greek salad. My wife and I ordered a small Greek salad, and let me tell you it was absolutely delicious. While we were eating our salad we noticed on the dessert menu a baklava cheesecake. Who in their right mind does a desert in the form of another dessert. These folks do. We tried one to share. It was absolutely amazing. They actually put a little bit of the baklava pastry on top of the slice of cheesecake. So next time you're in Saint Augustine, give this place a try. You will not be disappointed. Anyone who knows me knows that one of my favorite places in Florida is St. Augustine specifically the historical part of the city. I love the street lined with vendors, I love the "Oldest in America" buildings, I love the history. However, I also love the eclectic array of food it has. From historical fare given a modern twist to more specific preferences, there are just so many choices to choose from. However, there seems to be one place (well one I know of) that serves Greek or Mediterranean food: Cafe Athena. I am happy to say they do a great job in their fare. The restaurant is located north side of the park in the midst of historical St. Augustine, at the end of the main street. It is a quaint little place and easy to spot thanks to the employee standing outside handing out pamphlets promoting the place. As for the restaurant itself, it is a quaint establishment with elements promoting the Greek and Mediterranean areas. Do mind there is a bit of a decline near the entrance especially for those in wheelchairs. Where Cafe Athena stands out is the food. It isn't the most beautiful looking plates of food you've ever seen but they are delicious. My family started out with an appetizer we always try out: calamari. To be frank, it was good but given our experience eating calamari everywhere, it was not the best but surely not the worst. As for what I had for lunch, I had the roasted lamb. Once again, no decorum but it was really good. The lamb was tender and juicy and the sides were cooked well. Also, I could tell it was cooked from scratch, a huge plus in my book. Overall, a good place to go if you want your Greek or Mediterranean food in St. Augustine. The prices are moderate (by Yelp standards) as the major dishes are $10 to $30. Appetizers and breakfast food however are generally under $10 so take that into account. Summarized, if I ever decide to eat Greek or Mediterranean food in St. Augustine again, I will go here. But to be frank, it may take awhile because the area has a lot of restaurants and well... I like to keep my Elite status strong you know. :D read more

Watch Out! They include gratuity in the bill, then suggest that you add additional gratuity. A very sleazy practice that is common to take advantage of tourists. The lamb souvlaki was tough and flavor was awful. The grape leaves and hummus were both dissapointing. My advice: Walk past this place. There are so many good restaurants close by. read more

Looking for a quick, easy dine-in restaurant, we found Cafe Athena at the heart of Saint Augustine. It is located right off the A1A bridge, about four shops down from the first one. Parking can be difficult to find around the restaurant depending on time and day. I believe it is metered parking but free after some point of time. We were seated quickly once we arrived with our waiter coming with the menu and drinks. There are tables in the middle with about 6 booths at both sides of the restaurant. FOOD: Gyro Greek Combo (3/5): Gyro was slightly on the dry side. There were plenty of gyro slices layered above the pita bread. The Greek salad took about half of the plate, which was pretty good in my opinion. The thing that threw me off was the Tzatziki sauce that was included in this dish. It was more of a sour cream like taste for me, so I avoided the sauce after my first bite for lunch that time. Gyro Sandwich (4/5): The gyro was much better this time, for it was delicious! Vegetables in this were very fresh as well. I devoured this whole thing. If you are looking for gyro dishes, I would order this dish instead of the Gyro Greek Combo. They are essentially the same thing but served differently without the sides. If you are looking for a Greek salad option, then order the one above. Otherwise, you can order the Gyro Sandwich with a side of fries for an additional cost. Service was like how everyone else stated. Our first time there, service was on the better side with water drinks available for to-go because we were the only table dining at the time. My recent visit at Cafe Athena was decent on a Sunday, which means more families/patrons within the restaurant. My water was down twice and had to ask both times for a refill. Overall, I like Greek cuisine. Is this the best? No, but it is a nice spot to dine in Saint Augustine if you are looking for some Greek. I know there are few other Greek spots throughout this great city though. read more

Went here for lunch last week. My friends ordered gyros. I had the baked chicken. My portion was very large. It was almost half of a chicken ! Baked, with sides of veggies and potatoes. This place is so cute! A huge Greek mural on one wall and the most delightful server, Tonya, who makes you feel like her only guest. We arrived in St. Augustine later than anticipated due to road construction so we had a VERY late lunch. I had the Athena platter of 3 types of dips and pita, while hubby did the full gyro platter. He devoured every bit of his meal and mine was so filling, I don't think I ate 1/2 of it. Probably due to the 1/2 carafe of pinot grigio!!!!!! Couldn't finish that either! It was such a nice meal, in air conditioning, watching all the masked people go by (full Covid protocol observed here also), and the pouring rain made it even more enjoyable. As a Greek, I assume my rating is a little more tough than others. This restaurant is very small and we had to wait 10 mins for a table but it was worth it!! We had the dolmathes, Greek salad, saganaki, and lemon soup. The dolmathes were very authentic tasting and reminded me of our family recipe. First I have to start with the Baklava cheesecake it is there hidden gem. It was great something that you can't really describe until you try it. It has the best thing of both world the top portion is your traditional baklava the middle portion is a A blend of the creamy softest cheesecake ever combined with the nuts of the baklava and the bottom is not your normal cheesecake cookie it is a soft cake with the correct amount of moist and juices. A true Greek Chef would not be proud of the pasta sauce being poured on top of items like Pastisio and Moussaka in the combination plate. Galaktoboureko was too firm and not served a little warm. I was walking around St Augustine and spotted Athena Restaurant. I love Mediterranean food and decided to stop in for a late lunch. It is nice inside, clean and has cool murals and atmosphere. The hostess was friendly and cute too. We were seated right away. The waiter was patient while I was trying to decide on what to have. The Amstel draft beer was cold and tasty. The tomato barley soup was fantastic. The small Greek salad was delicious and fresh. The Gyro was very tasty and the meat had great flavor. I really enjoyed Athena Restaurant. I'm looking forward to visit this place again on my next trip through St Augustine. (There is a Yelp listing for Cafe Athena and it is the same place.)
